Exceptionally high values of photorefractive gain coefficient of up to 100 cm-1 have been observed in Fe-doped and Fe/Tb-doped crystals of photorefractive lithium niobate. It is believed that these are the highest observed coefficients of any crystalline photorefractive medium. Accurate measurements of gain coefficient have been possible for the first time by using a specially cut triangular crystal which allows the use of short interaction lengths and the complete elimination of surface reflections by having the beams incident at Brewster’s angle. Experimental results are consistent with a simple model of photorefractive beam coupling up until the onset of noise which is observed to deplete the pump for interaction lengths longer than 1 mm. We report on a numerical analysis of the temporal and spatial beam properties of nanosecond optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). The analysis is performed for a 355-nm-pumped critically phase-matched OPO of beta-barium borate. The calculations provide detailed information on the dependence of the OPO beam quality (measured by the quality factor M 2) on pump energy. An important result is the strong increase of the M 2 value for pump energies exceeding 1–2 times the energy at threshold. Furthermore, a temporal analysis of single OPO pulses indicates that the M 2 value strongly increases during the first few nanoseconds of the OPO oscillation. This increase is understood by considering the temporal dynamics of the spatial profiles of the OPO signal beam and the depleted pump radiation. A diode-laser-array end-pumped efficient CW Nd:GdVO4 laser at 1.06 μm has been developed. A low-order-mode output power of 14.3 W was obtained at the maximum available pump power of 26 W, giving an optical conversion efficiency of 55% and an average slope efficiency of 62%. The laser output beam quality factor at full pump power was determined to be M2<1.8. It is also shown that only lightly doped Nd:GdVO4 crystals are suitable for high-power end-pumped lasers. The influence of the ellipticity degree of the pump radiation polarization on threshold energies and energy conversion efficiencies of stimulated rotational Raman scattering (SRRS) are investigated in H2 with a XeCl excimer laser, by using different focusing geometries. For the first time, it is shown that the dependence of SRRS on pump radiation polarization is also affected by the focusing geometry, i.e. whether low- or high-angle focusing is applied. The experimentally determined threshold energies as a function of the pump radiation polarization are in accordance with theory mainly at high-angle focusing geometries. It is also shown for the first time that gain suppression effects on vibrational Raman scattering have to be considered in understanding the experimental results. We calculate the dependence of the signal-to-noise ratio and gain on the angle α between the pump and signal beams and the beam ratio β in Cu-doped potassium-sodium-strontium-barium niobate (Cu:KNSBN) crystal and compare them with the experimental results available in the literature. We find good qualitative agreement between the calculated and experimental results. Also we study variations of SNR and gain with α and β in BaTiO3 crystal. Intense, directional, and narrow-bandwidth 1130-nm emission was generated from LiF crystal at room temperature by the pumping with radiation in the wavelength region of the absorption band of the F2 color center. The emission was observed by the pumping with radiation of pulse energy above 5 mJ, and the divergence angle of the beam was about 16 mrad. We report measurements of rotational Raman gain suppression in H2 in the transient regime. Quantitative information about the dependence of the amount of the gain suppression on the pump energy and the propagation angle relative to the pump beam is obtained from angularly resolved measurements of the small signal amplification. These measurements, along with qualitative observations of the Stokes spatial distribution under gain conditions, demonstrate that the gain suppression is confined to a narrow region around the phase matching angle for collimated beams with relatively low gain per unit length. For focused beams with higher gain per unit length the suppressed region can extend to the forward direction, resulting in a two- to three-fold estimated increase in the Raman threshold.  相似文献

Permanent holographic recording in sputtered indium oxide (InOx) thin films is demonstrated, using ultraviolet radiation at 193 nm emitted by an ArF excimer laser. Steady-state refractive index changes of up to 5×10-3 are calculated from the measured diffraction efficiency of a HeNe laser probe beam. The recorded gratings exhibit a dynamic behaviour that relaxes to a steady-state value that depends on the oxygen partial pressure used during growth and on the recording beam intensity. Simple analytical expressions for the dependence of the maximum gain on the polarization angle of the interacting light waves and the crystal thickness are obtained for two-wave mixing in a cubic optically active piezoelectric crystal. By applying the theory to Bi12SiO20 and Bi12TiO20 crystals, the optimum gain is found also with respect to the grating orientation. The r?le of the (inverse) piezoelectric effect is investigated. Experimental results for two-wave mixing experiments in a single Bi12TiO20 fibre-type crystal at a wavelength of 632.8 nm under transverse a.c. electric field are reported. An exponential gain factor =4.7 cm-1, which is much higher than the absorption coefficient (0.6 cm-1), is obtained. It is observed that the signal beam enhancement is in fact signal beam depletion for spatial frequencies higher than F B, which is determined by fibre geometry. An unusually strong dependence of response time on the recording beams intensities ratio reflects the nonlinearities of the multi-two-wave mixing process.  相似文献

We present here the experimental results of photorefractive two-wave coupling in the congruent strontium barium niobate (SBN:61) crystal doped with 1000ppm Cr. Employing a He-Ne laser (632.8nm), we observed the coupling characteristics under different conditions. The crystal shows excellent photorefractive properties, with a high coupling coefficient nearly 6cm-1 as the beam intensity ratio m is less than 100. The saturated coupling coefficient of SBN:61:Cr shows a maximum at a certain external beam crossing angle 2θpeak, which varies with different m, showing a nearly linear dependence on m. The saturated coupling response time τ is measured to be less than 0.8 s. The response time decreased with increasing beam crossing angles no matter how large m is. We also observed the behaviour of the probe beam in reversed experimental procedures. We found that the probe beam shows a bistable state in both procedures.  相似文献

When a p-polarized beam propagates through a high-performance photorefractive polymer composite, poly dimethyl-4-(4-nitrophenylazo)benzene, its transmission behavior is influenced by three effects: the electroabsorption, the photorefractive coupling with the reflected beam from the rear surface, and the amplified scattering. From the measurements on the incidence angle dependence as well as the applied-electric-field dependence of the three effects, some conclusions are obtained. At a small incidence angle with a low applied electric field, both the amplified scattering and the electroabsorption are small whereas the coupling between the incident beam and the reflected beam plays a principal role. At a large incidence angle or with a high poling electric field, the transmission is influenced mainly by the amplified scattering and the electroabsorption. Self-pumped four wave mixing (SPFWM) in single BaTiO3 crystal is experimentally studied because of its fast response and rather simple optical system. The origins of unstable operations are shown and classified: unstable operation of self-pumped phase conjugate mirror (SPPCM), floating dust in the laser beam path, competition between beam path loops, and competition between groups of index gratings. The reflectivities and the buildup times are measured as they relate to incident conditions, i.e. the geometry of beam paths and interaction regions, and four cases are given. Large reflectivity was obtained when buildup time was short, probably because of large coupling strength. The measured buildup times lie between 0.5 s and 0.6 s at the total incident beam power of about 5.5 mW, so that fast response of SPFWM was confirmed.  相似文献

We report efficient laser emission on the 914 nm 4 F 3/2 to 4 I 9/2 transition in Nd:YVO4 under the pump with diode lasers at 888 nm for the first time. Continuous wave 6.57 W output power at 914 nm is obtained from a V-type resonator under 18.3 W of absorbed pump power; the slope efficiency with respect to the absorbed pump power was 60.6%. Moreover, intracavity frequency doubling with BiB3O6 (BiBO) nonlinear crystal yielded 1.77 W of deep-blue light at 457 nm with beam quality characterized by an M2 factor of 1.25.  相似文献

Second-harmonic generation was z-cut observed Gd1-xYxCa4O(BO3)3 (Gd1-xYxCOB) and the dependence of the phase-matching wavelength on the mixing ratio x has been investigated. The dependence on both temperature and angle tuning was examined as well. We found the suitable composition for noncritical frequency doubling at 930 nm, which is the lasing wavelength of Nd:YAlO3 on the 4F3/2?4I9/2 transition. The helicity dependence of the γ ppη reaction has been measured for the first time at a center-of-mass angle θ* η = 70° in the photon energy range from 780 MeV to 790 MeV. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4π-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam, and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. The helicity 3/2 cross-section is found to be small and the results for helicity 1/2 agree with predictions from the MAID analysis. The dependence of the effective gain on the incident angle of the beams and on the initial beam intensity ratio is studied in the experiment of degenerate two-wave mixing (TWM) in a reflection geometry with photorefractive Bi12GeO20 (BGO) crystals. A saturation value of the effective coupling constant ¦g¦-0.4 cm–1 is obtained. In contrast to TWM operated in the drift mode (i.e. with a nonzero electric field applied to the crystal), for TWM operated in the diffusion mode (zero external electric field) as is our case, beam coupling is reduced by moving the crystal or the interference fringes at a constant speed. At high moving speeds, complete beam decoupling can be reached. A comparison between the theoretical and measured dependence of the effective gain on the moving speed is also made. Using this technique, complete isolation of two intersecting coherent beams inside a nonlinear medium can be achieved.  相似文献

An efficient analysis method for erbium-doped optical waveguide amplifiers (EDWA) is presented. By solving the rate equation, the propagation in EDWA is stimulated using the finite difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM). The dependence of the gain of EDWA is investigated on the waveguide length, erbium concentration, and signal and pump power. The analysis shows that considerable gain levels, 3.35 dB/cm can be achieved in 10 cm-long EDWA with an erbium concentration of 2.0 × 1026 ions/m3, signal power 1 W and pump power 100 mW at 980 nm.  相似文献

We have theoretically analyzed all-optical switching in Pt:ethynyl complex based on nonlinear excited-state absorption. A detailed analysis for Pt:ethynyl complex has been presented based on rate equation approach. It is shown that a pulsed pump laser beam at 355 nm switches the transmission of a cw probe laser beam at 633 nm through a Pt:ethynyl sample. The effect of various parameters, such as pump pulse width, peak pumping intensity, normalized parameter , transition times of S1→S0 and S1→T1 states and lifetime of triplet state, on switching characteristics has been analyzed in detail. It has been shown that the probe beam can be completely switched off (i.e. 100% modulation) by a pulsed pump laser beam at 50 kW/cm2. These results have been used to design all-optical NOT and the universal NOR and NAND logic gates with multiple pump laser pulses.  相似文献

We describe an experiment demonstrating XUV amplification following collisional excitation in a capillary discharge plasma irradiated by a picosecond IR laser pulse. Guiding and temporally resolved transmission of the pump laser beam are also demonstrated and analysed. The short pump laser pulse heated rapidly the electrons producing amplification in the 3p1S0–3s1P1 transition of Ne-like sulphur at 60.84 nm. The estimated gain–length product was equal to 6.8, while the beam divergence reached 2.5 mrad for 30 mm capillary. This new, hybridly pumped collisional soft X-ray laser with the transient gain offers a new way towards efficient table-top XUV sources.  相似文献
