A light scattering photometer with a double cylinder shear cell has been developed which allows detection not only in one plane as usual, but in a half-spherical range around the scattering volume. The anisotropic scattering behavior of oriented and deformed polymer molecules in dilute solution was investigated. All measurements were performed on polystyrene in several viscous solvents. From measurements in the plane of flow the average orientation angle was determined. By variation of detector position and wavelength of the primary beam, the determination of all three axes of the molecular gyration space of polymer coils was possible. Compared to predictions of the well-known dynamic theories by Kuhn, Rouse and Zimm, corresponding orientation data were found while the molecular deformation ratio shows much lower values than expected.  相似文献

It has been considered for some time that the presence of birefringence in an oriented polymer must affect the light-scattering behavior. Previous analyses of this phenomenon are restricted to single-particle scattering. A more complete theory of the effect of birefringence on the scattering of light from correlated systems is presented. The measured scattering intensity is shown to be dependent upon the optical properties of the sample as well as the experimental technique and conditions.  相似文献

利用滴加沉淀剂法,通过偶氮聚合物BP-AZ-2CA在DMF-H2O体系中自组装得到了碗状的聚集体.利用透射电镜等对聚集体的组装过程及最终形貌等进行了表征.研究表明,通过调节初始聚合物浓度以及制备过程中的滴加水速率,可得到不同尺寸的碗状聚集体.将碗状聚集体置于单束偏振Ar+激光(488nm,110mW/cm2)照射下,所有的碗状聚集体都发生了沿着激光偏振方向的拉伸.碗状聚集体在激光拉伸后仍然维持中空的结构.  相似文献

The strain pattern about a spherical glass bead imbedded in a stretched rubber has been calculated and used to predict the birefringence and light scattering. This is compared with experimental measurements of the retardation pattern observed using a polarization microscope and deduced from the low-angle laser Hv light scattering pattern. The agreement with theory is favorable. The light scattering is suggestive of similar origins of light scattering from crystallizing rubbers and from inhomogeneously crosslinked rubbers.  相似文献

A continuous wave distributed feedback diode laser operating in the near infrared at wavelengths close to 1650 nm has been used to measure the extinction of light by single aerosol particles. The technique of optical feedback cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) was used for measurement of CRDS events at a repetition rate of 1.25 kHz. This very high repetition rate enabled multiple measurements of the extinction of light by single aerosol particles for the first time and demonstrated the dependence of light scattering on the position of a particle within the laser beam. A model is proposed to explain quantitatively this phenomenon. The minimum detectable dimensionless extinction coefficient epsilonmin was determined to be 3x10(-6). Extinction values obtained for single spherical polymer beads from a monodisperse sample of particles of diameter of 4 microm are in near-quantitative agreement with the values calculated by the Mie scattering theory. The deviations from the Mie theory expected for measurement of extinction by CRDS using a continuous wave laser are discussed in the companion paper.  相似文献

Sorption equilibrium of polystyrene and poly (dimethyl siloxane) in mixed solvents has been monitored by means of the preferential adsorption coefficient experimentally determined from intensity light scattering measurements. The pairs of solvents used to dissolve each polymer sample have been selected for the purpose to perform cosolvent and cononsolvent ternary polymer systems. Flory-Huggins formalism including ternary interactions has been used to predict the sorption equilibrium for the cosolvent system and, for the first time, for cononsolvent ones. Moreover, the proportionality between binary and ternary interactions, recognized by Pouchly, is also corroborated for both ternary polymer systems. From a thermodynamic standpoint, the sorption equilibrium has been described by approaching the behavior of the bulk solvent to the binary liquid mixture through the excess Gibbs free energy.  相似文献

Experimental patterns obtained using the small-angle light scattering technique for thin-film polymer studies are fraught with speckles arising from the effect of interspherulitic interference. The presence of speckles hampers efforts in characterizing the spherulitic structure. Using a divergent beam increases the number of scattering sites and results in a reduction of the degree of speckling. Nevertheless, this decimates the ability of analyzing the pattern at low-scattering angles. Employing an expanded collimated beam produces the same effect but necessitates the use of specially designed optical components. This article outlines a novel technique that involves simple vibration of the polymer sample. Experimental results confirm its efficacy in reducing speckles without limiting the ability for analysis at low-scattering angles. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A photopolymerization reaction involving 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA), a hydroxytelechelic polybutadiene (HTPB) and 2,2-dimethyl-2-hydroxyacetophenone (Darocur 1173) as photoinitiator has been investigated by Real Time UV and Real Time IR spectroscopies. For this system, RTUV analyses are completely opposite to the expected curves, namely a decrease in the sample absorbance (photobleaching phenomenon). This apparent contradiction has been explained by a scattering phenomenon inside the sample, which can be linked to the formation of sub-structures that can create local fluctuations of refractive index during the polymerization. A four-flux theory, which takes into account the polymer absorption and scattering properties, has allowed us to describe the UV light intensity variation inside the sample.  相似文献

Self-transparency due to thermal non-linearities is presented as a basic switching effect in a thick polymer dispersed liquid crystal sample. For the first time a detailed 3D mapping of the output laser beam as a function of the x-y coordinates is presented: changes of the transmitted beam profile are recorded vs. both incident power and time. It is discussed how light intensity and temperature can be used as control parameters for the non-linear part of the refractive index. The experimental results confirm the existence of a threshold value of the incident light intensity at which the device switches from the scattering state to the transmissive state.  相似文献

Size-exclusion chromatography with coupled multiangle light scattering and differential refractometry detectors has been used to obtain molecular mass and radius of gyration distributions of polydisperse polymer samples. From these data the scaling law between dimensions and the absolute molecular mass is obtained with just one sample of each polymer. Three different kinds of polymers are presented: polystyrene which serves as reference polymer, polyphosphazenes which behave abnormally in solution and poly(ethylene oxide) which is soluble in water. Since the relationship between dimensions and molecular mass depends on the extent of interactions between chain segments and solvent molecules, the scaling law provides information about the solution properties of the polymer.  相似文献

Pullulan derivative was synthesized by coupling carboxymethylpullulan (degree of substitution DS(0)(in)=0.7) and dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA), activated by a hydrosoluble carbodiimide N(')-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDAC). FTIR and (13)C and (1)H NMR spectroscopic analyses have evidenced that the polysaccharide has been successfully modified. (1)H NMR, nitrogen analysis, and conductimetric measurements allow determination of the degree of substitution in both carboxylic acid and amine functions. We have found that both functions present a similar DS of 0.35, which is characteristic of an ampholytic polymer with possible zwitterionic-type properties. Solution properties have been studied by flow field flow fractionation (F4) coupled on-line with multiangle laser light scattering (MALLS) and quasi elastic light scattering (QELS), surface tension, and viscosity measurements. The behavior has been found largely pH dependent and an amphiphilic behavior has been evidenced in alkaline media.  相似文献

The laser-assisted holographic grating recording process in films of azobenzene functionalized polymers is usually studied by observation of the efficiency of light scattering on a developing in time diffraction grating. Various possible mechanisms contributing to grating formation as well as the bulk or surface origin (bulk refractive index and/or relief grating) of light scattering make the analysis of kinetics of grating recording, from the light scattering data only, difficult and ambiguous. To fully explain experimentally observed various and complex (frequently nonexponential) kinetics of the first-order light diffraction intensity, we considered a simple single-exponential growth of the two phase gratings in the same polymer film. In modeling we assumed that the bulk refractive index grating Deltan(t) and the surface relief grating Deltad(t) differ considerably in their growth rates and we allowed for a nonstationary phase shift Deltaphi(t) between them which was experimentally observed during the recording process. The origin of the nonstationary phase shift is a result of a slow shift of interference pattern due to delicate symmetry breaking in illumination conditions (e.g., difference in beam intensities and deviation of exact symmetrical beam incidence angles on the sample). Changing only such parameters as stationary amplitudes of refractive index and relief gratings for a span of phase shifts (0-pi) between them, we obtained a series of kinetic responses which we discuss and interpret. The various examples of temporal evolution of diffraction efficiency for the same grating formation kinetics, modeled in our work, supply evidence that great care must be taken to properly interpret the experimental results.  相似文献

In this paper major emphasis has been placed on the phase behavior of miscible polymer blends, especially on blends containing random copolymers. Blends containing random copolymers generally tend to phase separation at elevated temperatures (LCST behavior). Experimental determination of miscibility areas as a function of temperature and copolymer composition by laser light scattering provides the interaction parameters necessary for theoretical explanations and predictions of various phase separation phenomena. Just above the LCST polymer blends exhibit regular highly interconnected two-phase morphologies. The rate of decay of these structures is estimated. The phase separation kinetics can be pursued by laser light scattering and is discussed in terms of CAHN's linearized theory. It can be shown that the linear theory adequately describes the early stage of phase decomposition. The linear theory is also applicable to the reverse phenomenon, the phase dissolution below LCST. unlike the case of phase separation the diffusion-controlled regime is that in the late stage of phase dissolution.  相似文献

The combination of the ID13/ESRF micrometer-sized X-ray beam with the reflection geometry allowed to establish a new scattering method for investigating laterally patterned heterogeneous multilayers and interfaces. This new method—called microbeam grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (μGISAXS)—has been applied to a novel gradient multilayer of self-assembled nanometer-sized noble metal clusters on top of a polymer layer, being of significant importance for many technological applications, including biorecognitive sensoring. The new feature of using a 5 μm X-ray beam allows to characterize laterally heterogeneous samples on two length scales, induced by the small beamsize and reciprocal space resolution. From the two-dimensional μGISAXS patterns the three-dimensional structure and morphology of the gradient of gold (Au) clusters was reconstructed using detailed model simulations. Though being a highly complex sample, it turned out that the gradient is characterized by a single parameter, namely the cluster height. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and optical absorption spectra provide supplementary information and help to enlighten the structure of evaporated gold clusters on polymer layers.  相似文献
