We prove that any set of polynomials orthogonal with respect to a discrete measure supported on equidistant points contained in a half line satisfy a second order difference equation. We also give a discrete analogue of the discriminant and give a general formula for the discrete discriminant of a discrete orthogonal polynomial. As an application we give explicit evaluations of the discrete discriminants of the Meixner and the Hahn polynomials. A difference analogue of the Bethe Ansatz equations is also mentioned.Research partially supported by NSF grant DMS 99-70865  相似文献

We derive raising and lowering operators for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and find second order differential and q-difference equations for these polynomials. A general functional equation is found which allows one to relate the zeros of the orthogonal polynomials to the stationary values of an explicit quasi-energy and implies recurrences on the orthogonal polynomial coefficients. We also evaluate the discriminants and quantized discriminants of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle.  相似文献

We consider polynomials which are orthogonal with respect to weight functions, which are defined in terms of the modified Bessel function I ν and which are related to the noncentral χ 2 -distribution. It turns out that it is the most convenient to use two weight functions with indices ν and ν+1 and to study orthogonality with respect to these two weights simultaneously. We show that the corresponding multiple orthogonal polynomials of type I and type II exist and give several properties of these polynomials (differential properties, Rodrigues formula, explicit formulas, recurrence relation, differential equation, and generating functions).  相似文献

Using realizations of the positive discrete series representations of the Lie algebra su(1,1) in terms of Meixner—Pollaczek polynomials, the action of su(1,1) on Poisson kernels of these polynomials is considered. In the tensor product of two such representations, two sets of eigenfunctions of a certain operator can be considered and they are shown to be related through continuous Hahn polynomials. As a result, a bilinear generating function for continuous Hahn polynomials is obtained involving the Poisson kernel of Meixner—Pollaczek polynomials; this result is also known as the Burchnall—Chaundy formula. For the positive discrete series representations of the quantized universal enveloping algebra U q (su(1,1)) a similar analysis is performed and leads to a bilinear generating function for Askey—Wilson polynomials involving the Poisson kernel of Al-Salam and Chihara polynomials. Given numbers \({n,s \in \mathbb{N}}\), \({n \geq 2}\), and the \({n}\)th-degree monic Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind \({\widehat T_n(x)}\), the polynomial system “induced” by \({\widehat T_n(x)}\) is the system of orthogonal polynomials \({\{p_{k}^{n,s} \}}\) corresponding to the modified measure \({d \sigma^{n,s}(x)=\widehat T^{2s}_n(x) d\sigma(x)}\), where \({d\sigma(x)=1/\sqrt{1-x^{2}}dx}\) is the Chebyshev measure of the first kind. Here we are concerned with the problem of determining the coefficients in the three-term recurrence relation for the polynomials \({p^{n,s}_{k}}\). We characterize the orthogonal polynomials in a class of polynomials defined through their generating functions. This led to three new systems of orthogonal polynomials whose generating functions and orthogonality relations involve elliptic functions. The Hamburger moment problems associated with these polynomials are indeterminate. We give infinite families of weight functions in each case. The different polynomials treated in this work are also polynomials in a parameter and as functions of this parameter they are orthogonal with respect to unique measures, which we find explicitly. Through a quadratic transformation we find a new exactly solvable birth and death process with quartic birth and death rates.  相似文献

Bi-axially symmetric monogenic generating functions on p + q have been used recently to define generalisations of Gegenbauer polynomials. These polynomials are orthogonal on the unit ball in p. Generalised Cauchy transforms of these polynomials are used to define corresponding bi-axial Gegenbauer functions of the second kind. It is demonstrated that these functions of the second kind satisfy second order differential equations related to those satisfied by the corresponding bi-axial Gegenbauer polynomials.  相似文献

The main result determines all real meromorphic functions f of finite lower order in the plane such that f has finitely many zeros and non-real poles, while f′′ + a 1 f′ + a 0 f has finitely many non-real zeros, where a 1 and a 0 are real rational functions which satisfy a 1(∞) = 0 and a 0(x) ≥ 0 for all real x with |x| sufficiently large. This is accomplished by refining some earlier results on the zeros in a neighbourhood of infinity of meromorphic functions and second order linear differential polynomials. The main purpose of this paper is to obtain an explicit expression of a family of matrix valued orthogonal polynomials {Pn}n, with respect to a weight W, that are eigenfunctions of a second-order differential operator D. The weight W and the differential operator D were found in [12], using some aspects of the theory of the spherical functions associated to the complex projective spaces. We also find other second-order differential operator E symmetric with respect to W and we describe the algebra generated by D and E.  相似文献

For the horizontal generating functions Pn(z)=∑nk=1 S(nk) zk of the Stirling numbers of the second kind, strong asymptotics are established, as n→∞. By using the saddle point method for Qn(z)=Pn(nz) there are two main results: an oscillating asymptotic for z(−e, 0) and a uniform asymptotic on every compact subset of \[−e, 0]. Generalized classical orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball B d and the standard simplex T d are orthogonal with respect to weight functions that are reflection-invariant on B d and, after a composition, on T d , respectively. They are also eigenfunctions of a second-order differential—difference operator that is closely related to Dunkl's h -Laplacian for the reflection groups. Under a proper limit, the generalized classical orthogonal polynomials on B d converge to the generalized Hermite polynomials on R d , and those on T d converge to the generalized Laguerre polynomials on R d + . We define new solutions of the hypergeometric system that are invariant with respect to a parabolic Weyl subgroup. They generalize the spherical functions of an ordered symmetric space. Orthogonal polynomials for a family of weight functions on [?1,1]2, $$\mathcal{W}_{\alpha,\beta,\gamma}(x,y) = |x+y|^{2\alpha+1}|x-y|^{2\beta+1} \bigl(1-x^2\bigr)^{\gamma}\bigl(1-y^2\bigr)^{\gamma},$$ are studied and shown to be related to the Koornwinder polynomials defined on the region bounded by two lines and a parabola. In the case of ??=±1/2, an explicit basis of orthogonal polynomials is given in terms of Jacobi polynomials, and a closed formula for the reproducing kernel is obtained. The latter is used to study the convergence of orthogonal expansions for these weight functions.  相似文献
