The unknotting or triple point cancelling number of a surface link F is the least number of 1-handles for F such that the 2-knot obtained from F by surgery along them is unknotted or pseudo-ribbon, respectively. These numbers have been often studied by knot groups and Alexander invariants. On the other hand, quandle colorings and quandle cocycle invariants of surface links were introduced and applied to other aspects, including non-invertibility and triple point numbers. In this paper, we give lower bounds of the unknotting or triple point cancelling numbers of surface links by using quandle colorings and quandle cocycle invariants.  相似文献

For a proper continuous map f:MN between topological manifolds M and N with m≡ dimM < dimNm+k, a primary obstruction to topological embeddings θ(f) ∈H c m k (M; Z 2) has been defined and studied by the authors in {9, 8, 2, 3], where H c * denotes the singular homology with closed support. In this paper, we study the obstruction from the viewpoint of differential topology and give various applications. We first give some characterizations of embeddings among generic differentiable maps, which are refinements of the results in [9, 10]. Then we give a result concerning the number of connected components of the complement of the image of a codimension-1 continuous map with a normal crossing point, which generalizes the results in [6, 4, 5, 9]. Finally we give a simple proof of a theorem of Li and Peterson [20] about immersions of m-manifolds into (2m-1)-manifolds. Received: 3 December 1999 / Revised version: 10 October 2000  相似文献

We consider a class of hyperbolic 3-orbifoldsO(α/β); the underlying topological space of such an orbifold is the 3-sphere and the singular set is obtained by adding the two standard (upper and lower) unknotting tunnels to a 2-bridge linkL(α/β) (and associating branching order two to both unknotting tunnels). These 3-orbifolds are extremal with respect to the notion of Heegaard genus or Heegaard number of 3-orbifolds; it is to be expected that they are also extremal with respect to the volume, that is the smallest volume hyperbolic 3-orbifolds should belong to this or some closely related class. We show that an orbifoldO(α/β) has a uniqueD 2-covering by an orbifold n(α/β) wose space is the 3-sphere and whose singular set is the same 2-bridge linkL(α/β) used for the construction ofO(α/β); moreoverO(α/β) is hyperbolic if and only if n(α/β) is hyperbolic. As the volumes of the orbifolds n(α/β) are known resp. can be computed, this allows to compute the volumes of the orbifoldsO(α/β). The problem of computation of volumes remains open for some closely related classes of 3-orbifolds which are also extremal with respect to the Heegaard genus (for example associating a branching order bigger than two to one or both unknotting tunnels).  相似文献

We establish an obstruction to unknotting an alternating knot by a single crossing change. The obstruction is lattice-theoretic in nature, and combines Donaldson's diagonalization theorem with an obstruction developed by Ozsváth and Szabó using Heegaard Floer homology. As an application, we enumerate the alternating 3-braid knots with unknotting number one, and show that each has an unknotting crossing in its standard alternating diagram.  相似文献

Recently Stoimenow showed that for every knot K and any nN and u0?u(K) there is a prime knot Kn,uo which is n-equivalent to the knot K and has unknotting number u(Kn,uo) equal to u0. The similar result has been obtained for the 4-ball genus gs of a knot. Stoimenow also proved that any admissible value of the Tristram-Levine signature σξ can be realized by a knot with the given Vassiliev invariants of bounded order. In this paper, we show that for every knot K with genus g(K) and any nN and m?g(K) there exists a prime knot L which is n-equivalent to K and has genus g(L) equal to m.  相似文献

We present a combinatorial method for a calculation of the knot Floer homology of (1, l)-knots, and then demonstrate it for nonalternating (1, 1)-knots with 10 crossings and the pretzel knots of type (−2,m, n). Our calculations determine the unknotting numbers and 4-genera of the pretzel knots of this type.Mathematics Subject Classiffications (2000). 57M27, 57M25  相似文献

Using unknotting number, we introduce a link diagram invariant of type given in Hass and Nowik (2008) [4], which changes at most by 2 under a Reidemeister move. We show that a certain infinite sequence of diagrams of the trivial two-component link need quadratic number of Reidemeister moves for being splitted with respect to the number of crossings.  相似文献

Let M be a compact, connected, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold and T0 an incompressible torus boundary component of M such that the pair (M,T0) is not cabled. By a result of C. Gordon, if (S,∂S),(T,∂T)⊂(M,T0) are incompressible punctured tori with boundary slopes at distance Δ=Δ(∂S,∂T), then Δ?8, and the cases where Δ=6,7,8 are very few and classified. We give a simplified proof of this result (or rather, of its reduction process), using an improved estimate for the maximum possible number of mutually parallel negative edges in the graphs of intersection of S and T. We also extend Gordon's result by allowing either S or T to be an essential Klein bottle.  相似文献

Type II topoisomerases are enzymes that change the topology of DNA by performing strand-passage. In particular, they unknot knotted DNA very efficiently. Motivated by this experimental observation, we investigate transition probabilities between knots. We use the BFACF algorithm to generate ensembles of polygons in Z3 of fixed knot type. We introduce a novel strand-passage algorithm which generates a Markov chain in knot space. The entries of the corresponding transition probability matrix determine state-transitions in knot space and can track the evolution of different knots after repeated strand-passage events. We outline future applications of this work to DNA unknotting.  相似文献

We say a knot k in the 3-sphere S3 has PropertyIE if the infinite cyclic cover of the knot exterior embeds into S3. Clearly all fibred knots have Property IE.There are infinitely many non-fibred knots with Property IE and infinitely many non-fibred knots without property IE. Both kinds of examples are established here for the first time. Indeed we show that if a genus 1 non-fibred knot has Property IE, then its Alexander polynomial Δk(t) must be either 1 or 2t2−5t+2, and we give two infinite families of non-fibred genus 1 knots with Property IE and having Δk(t)=1 and 2t2−5t+2 respectively.Hence among genus 1 non-fibred knots, no alternating knot has Property IE, and there is only one knot with Property IE up to ten crossings. We also give an obstruction to embedding infinite cyclic covers of a compact 3-manifold into any compact 3-manifold.  相似文献

Some Examples Related to 4-Genera, Unknotting Numbers and Knot Polynomials   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The paper gives examples of knots with equal knot polynomials, but distinct signatures, 4-genera, double branched cover homologygroups and unknotting numbers. This generalizes some examplesgiven by Lickorish and Millett. It is also shown that thereare knots with minimal (crossing number) diagrams of differentunknotting number (thus answering a question of Bleiler), andan alternative proof is given of Rudolph's result that thereare knots of 15n crossings with unit Alexander polynomial and4-genus or unknotting number n.  相似文献

Edmonds showed that two free orientation preserving smooth actions φ1 and φ2 of a finite Abelian group G on a closed connected oriented smooth surface M are equivalent by an equivariant orientation preserving diffeomorphism iff they have the same bordism class [M,φ1]=[M,φ2] in the oriented bordism group Ω2(G) of the group G. In this paper, we compute the bordism class [M,φ] for any such action of G on M and we determine for a given M, the bordism classes in Ω2(G) that are representable by such actions of G on M. This will enable us to obtain a formula for the number of inequivalent such actions of G on M. We also determine the “weak” equivalence classes of such actions of G on M when all the p-Sylow subgroups of G are homocyclic (i.e. of the form n(Z/pαZ)).  相似文献

Given a complex square matrix A and two complex numbers λ1 and λ2, we present a method to calculate the distance from A to the set of matrices X that have λ1 and λ2 as some of their eigenvalues. We also find the nearest matrix X.  相似文献

We introduce revlex-initial 0/1-polytopes as the convex hulls of reverse-lexicographically initial subsets of 0/1-vectors. These polytopes are special knapsack-polytopes. It turns out that they have remarkable extremal properties. In particular, we use these polytopes in order to prove that the minimum numbers gnfac(d,n) of facets and the minimum average degree gavdeg(d,n) of the graph of a d-dimensional 0/1-polytope with n vertices satisfy gnfac(d,n)?3d and gavdeg(d,n)?d+4. We furthermore show that, despite the sparsity of their graphs, revlex-initial 0/1-polytopes satisfy a conjecture due to Mihail and Vazirani, claiming that the graphs of 0/1-polytopes have edge-expansion at least one.  相似文献

We consider matrices M with entries mij = m(λiλj) where λ1, … ,λn are positive numbers and m is a binary mean dominated by the geometric mean, and matrices W with entries wij = 1/m (λiλj) where m is a binary mean that dominates the geometric mean. We show that these matrices are infinitely divisible for several much-studied classes of means.  相似文献

We use Heegaard Floer homology to give obstructions to unknotting a knot with a single crossing change. These restrictions are particularly useful in the case where the knot in question is alternating. As an example, we use them to classify all knots with crossing number less than or equal to nine and unknotting number equal to one. We also classify alternating knots with 10 crossings and unknotting number equal to one.  相似文献

Abstract. We analyze how a family of essential annuli in a compact 3-manifold will induce, from a strongly irreducible generalized Heegaard splitting of the ambient manifold, generalized Heegaard splittings of the complementary components. There are specific applications to the subadditivity of tunnel number of knots, improving somewhat bounds of Kowng [Kw]. For example, in the absence of 2-bridge summands, the tunnel number of the sum of n knots is no less than the sum of the tunnel numbers. The hexatangle
We are interested in knowing what type of manifolds are obtained by doing Dehn surgery on closed pure 3-braids in S3. In particular, we want to determine when we get S3 by surgery on such a link. We consider links which are small closed pure 3-braids; these are the closure of 3-braids of the form , where σ1, σ2 are the generators of the 3-braid group and e1, f1, e are integers. We study Dehn surgeries on these links, and determine exactly which ones admit an integral surgery producing the 3-sphere. This is equivalent to determining the surgeries of some type on a certain six component link L that produce S3. The link L is strongly invertible and its exterior double branch covers a certain configuration of arcs and spheres, which we call the hexatangle. Our problem is equivalent to determine which fillings of the spheres by integral tangles produce the trivial knot, which is what we explicitly solve. This hexatangle is a generalization of the pentangle, which is studied in [C.McA. Gordon, J. Luecke, Non-integral toroidal Dehn surgeries, Comm. Anal. Geom. 12 (2004) 417-485].  相似文献
