We applied the discrete element method (DEM) of simulation modified by an enlarged particle model to simulate bead motion in a large bead mill. The stainless-steel bead mill has inner diameter of 102 mm and mill length of 198 mm. The bead diameter and filling ratio were fixed respectively at 0.5 mm and 85%. The agitator rotational speed was changed from 1863 to 3261 rpm. The bead motion was monitored experimentally using a high-speed video camera through a transparent mill body. For the simulation, enlarged particle sizes were set as 3–6 mm in diameter. With the DEM modified by the enlarged particle model, the motion of enlarged particles in a mill was simulated. The velocity data of the simulated enlarged particles were compared with those obtained in the experiment. The simulated velocity of the enlarged particles depends on the virtual frictional coefficient in the DEM model. The optimized value of the virtual frictional coefficient can be determined by considering the accumulated mean value. Results show that the velocity of the enlarged particles simulated increases with an increase in the optimum virtual frictional coefficient, but the simulated velocity agrees well with that determined experimentally by optimizing the virtual frictional coefficient in the simulation. The computing time in the simulation decreases with increased particle size.  相似文献

Soil mixing is an emerging research in the field of construction resource recovery. In this study, the mixing behaviour of soil particles in a mixer is numerically simulated by the discrete element method (DEM). A four-factor, three-level orthogonal experiment is designed to optimize the mixer design by selecting the fly-cutter speed, spindle speed, number of blades and fly-cutter diameter, using Lacey mixing index and power consumption as evaluation indicators. Then, the impact of soil cohesion and type on the mixing behaviour is investigated. The results show that the optimal parameter combination of this experiment is 280 rpm fly-cutter speed, 40 rpm spindle speed, 4 blades and 250 mm fly-cutter diameter. This optimal combination reaches a comparatively uniform state mix in 5.9 s with an average power consumption of 704.11 W. In addition, the wear and tear of the mixer increases as soil cohesion increases, while the mixing quality of materials declines, resulting in a “shaft hugging” phenomenon. The mixing efficiency varies greatly among different soil types, but the radial and tangential velocities have a similar law. This work can provide some guidance for the optimization design of a mixer and study of soil mixing.  相似文献

Three dimensionally coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element method (DEM) were used to investigate the flow of corn-shaped particles in a cylindrical spouted bed with a conical base. The particle motion was modeled by the DEM, and the gas motion by the k-? two-equation turbulent model. A two-way coupling numerical iterative scheme was used to incorporate the effects of gas–particle interactions in terms of momentum exchange. The corn-shaped particles were constructed by a multi-sphere method. Drag force, contact force, Saffman lift force, Magnus lift force, and gravitational force acting on each individual particle were considered in establishing the mathematical modeling. Calculations were carried out in a cylindrical spouted bed with an inside diameter of 200 mm, a height of 700 mm, and a conical base of 60°. Comparison of simulations with experiments showed the availability of the multi-sphere method in simulating spouting action with corn-shaped particles, but it depended strongly on the number and the arrangement of the spherical elements. Gas–solid flow patterns, pressure drop, particle velocity and particle concentration at various spouting gas velocity were discussed. The results showed that particle velocity reaches a maximum at the axis and then decreases gradually along the radial direction in the whole bed. Particle concentration increases along the radial direction in the spout region but decreases in the fountain region, while it is nearly constant in the annulus region. Increasing spouting gas velocity leads to larger pressure drop, remarkably increased speed of particle moving upward or downward, but decreased particle concentration.  相似文献

Particle interactions play a significant role in controlling the performance of dry powder inhalers (DPIs), which mainly arise through van der Waals potentials, electrostatic interactions, and capillary forces. Our aim is to investigate the influence of electrostatic charge on the performance of DPIs as a basis for improving the formulation of the particle ingredients. The mixing process of carrier and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) particles in a vibrating container is investigated using a discrete element method (DEM). The number of API particles attaching to the carrier particle (i.e., contact number) increases with increasing charge and decreases with increasing container size. The contact number decreases with increasing vibrational velocity amplitude and frequency. Moreover, a mechanism governed by the electrostatic force is proposed for the mixing process. This mechanism is different from that previously proposed for the mixing process governed by van der Waals forces, indicating that long-range and short-range adhesive forces can result in different mixing behaviours.  相似文献

In this study, discrete element method (DEM) was employed to simulate the movement of non-cohesive mono-dispersed particles in a V-blender along with particle-particle and particle-boundary interactions. To validate the model, DEM results were successfully compared to positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) data reported in literature. The validated model was then utilized to explore the effects of rotational speed and fill level on circulation intensity and axial dispersion coefficient of non-cohesive particles in the V-blender. The results showed that the circulation intensity increased with an increase in the rotational speed from 15 to 60 rpm. As the fill level increased from 20% to 46%, the circulation intensity decreased, reached its minimum value at a fill level of 34% for all rotational speeds, and did not change significantly at fill levels greater than 34%. The DEM results also revealed that the axial dispersion coefficient of particles in the V-blender was a linear function of the rotational speed. These trends were in good agreement with the experimentallv determined values reported bv previous researchers.  相似文献

A new first degree solids mixing rate is proposed to evaluate the mixing of solids in small scale fluidized beds. Particle mixing experiments were carried out in a 2D fluidized bed with a cross-section of 0.02 m × 0.2 m and a height of 1 m. White and black particles with average diameters of 850 and 450 μm were used in our experiments. Image processing was used to measure the concentration of the tracers at different times. The effects of four representative operating parameters (superficial gas velocity, ratio of tracer particles to bed particles, tracer particle position, and particle size) on mixing are discussed with reference to the mixing index. We found that the Lacey index depends on the concentration of the tracers. The position of the tracers affects the initial mixing rate but not the final degree of mixing. However, the new mixing rate equation does not depend on the initial configuration of the particles because this situation is considered to be the initial condition. Using the data obtained in this work and that found in literature, an empirical correlation is proposed to evaluate the mixing rate constant as a function of dimensionless numbers (Archimedes, Reynolds, and Froude) in small scale fluidized beds. This correlation allows for an estimation of the mixing rate under different operating conditions and for the detection of the end point and/or the time of mixing.  相似文献

The discrete element model (DEM) is a very promising modelling strategy for two-phase granular systems. However, owing to a lack of experimental measurements, validation of numerical simulations of two-phase granular systems is still an important issue. In this study, a small two-dimensional gas- fluidized bed was simulated using a discrete element model. The dimensions of the simulated bed were 44mm × 10mm × 120 mm and the fluidized particles had a diameter dp = 1.2 mm and density ρp = 1000 kg/m^3. The comparison between DEM simulations and experiments are performed on the basis of time-averaged voidage maps. The drag-law of Beetstra et al. [Beetstra, R., van der Hoef, M.A., & Kuipers,J. A. M. (2007b). Drag force of intermediate Reynolds number flow past mono- and bidispersed arrays of spheres. AIChE Journal, 53,489-501 ] seems to give the best results. The simulations are fairly insensitive to the coefficient of restitution and the coefficient of friction as long as some route of energy dissipation during particle-particle and particle-wall contact is provided. Changing the boundary condition of the gas phase at the side-walls from zero-slip to full-slip does not affect the simulation results. Care is to be taken that the cell sizes are chosen so that a reasonable number of particles can be found in a fluid cell.  相似文献

Here we present a study on the behavior of individual particles in the Taylor vortex. Two particle-fluid systems were tested: a cube with the edge length of 2 mm and the density of 0.13 g/cm3 (‘light particle’) in a working fluid of mineral oil (density of 0.86 g/cm3 and viscosity of 0.066 Pa.s); and a sphere with the diameter of 1.6 mm and the density of 2.2 g/cm3 (‘heavy particle’) in 90% glycerin/water (density of 1.23 g/cm3 and viscosity of 0.128 Pa.s). The Taylor–Couette device used for this study was featured with a short column (aspect ratio ≤ 6) and a wide gap (radius ratio ≤ 0.67). The interaction between the floating particle and Taylor vortices was investigated using a high speed camera and a particle image velocimetry (PIV) system. Moreover, computational fluid dynamics simulation was performed to calculate the liquid flow pattern and analyze the particle motion. Our results show that the particle behavior in the Taylor–Couette device is strongly dependent on the particle density and Reynolds number. With the increasing Reynolds number, four types of particle trajectories were sequentially identified from the light particle, including a circular trajectory on the surface of the inner cylinder, random shifting between the circular trajectory and oval orbit, a stable oval orbit in the annulus, and a circle along the vortex center. On the other hand, the heavy particle moves along a circular orbit and an oval orbit at low and high Reynolds numbers, respectively. Several unreported particle behaviors were also observed, such as the self-rotation of the particle when it moves along the above trajectories, the shifting axis of the oval orbit, etc. In addition, the PIV measurements show that the trapped particle can only influence the flow pattern locally around the particle. The study can help understand the particle behavior in a Taylor vortex better and therefore benefit applications of particle-laden Taylor vortex devices.  相似文献

The optimization of the drum structure is beneficial to improve the particle motion and mixing in rotary drums. In this work, two kinds of drum structures, Lacy cylinder drum (LC) and Lacy-lifters cylinder drum (LLC), are developed on the basic of cylinder drum to enhance the heat transfer area. The particle motion and mixing process are simulated by DEM method. Based on the grid independence and model validation, the contact number between particles and wall, particle velocity profile, thickness of active layer, particle exchange coefficient, particle concentration profile and mixing index are demonstrated. The influences of the drum structure and the operation parameters are further evaluated. The results show that the contact number between particles and wall is improved in LC and LLC compared to cylinder drum. The particle velocity in LC is higher than that in cylinder drum at high rotating speed, and the particle velocity of the particle falling region is significantly improved in LLC. Compared to cylinder drum and LC, the thickness of active layer in LLC is smaller, while the local particle mixing quality is proved to be the best in the active region. In addition, the particle exchange coefficients between static region and active region in the three drums are compared and LLC is found tending to weaken the particle flow. Besides, the fluctuations of particle concentration in the active region, static region, and boundary region are weakened in LLC, and the equilibrium state is reached earlier. In addition, the overall particle mixing performance in cylinder drum, LC and LLC is analyzed. The particle mixing performance in cylinder drum is the worst, while the difference in mixing quality of LC and LLC depends on the operation conditions.  相似文献

Turbulent environment improves the flotation recovery of fine particles by promoting the particle–bubble collision rate, which directly depends on the particle slip velocity. However, the existing slip velocity models are not applicable to fine particles in turbulence. The mechanism of turbulence characteristics and particle properties on the slip velocity of fine particles in turbulence was unclear. In this study, a coupled ANSYS FLUENT and EDEM based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element method (DEM) were used to simulate the slip velocity of fine particles in the approximately homogenous isotropic turbulence, which was excited by the grid. The reliability of the used CFD-DEM simulation method was validated against the slip velocity measured by the particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiments. In particular, the effects of the particle shapes, particle densities, and turbulence intensities on the slip velocity have been investigated with this numerical method. Numerical results show that particle shapes have no significant effect on fine particles between 37 and 225 μm. The slip velocity of the spherical particles increases with the turbulence intensity and particle density. Based on the simulated data, a model which has a correlation coefficient of 0.95 is built by using nonlinear fitting.  相似文献

Pump performance of a small airlift system for transporting solid particles is investigated experimentally. Six types of uprisers locally containing S-shaped portions are used to investigate the effect of local bends on the flow characteristics. The internal diameter of the upriser is 18 mm and its total height 3200 mm. Alumina particles of 3 mm diameter are used as solid particles. The relation between the discharged liquid flux and the flux of injected air are obtained, varying injected gas flux, particle flux, type of upriser, and submergence ratio. In addition, the particle motion in the upriser is investigated in detail by means of photographic observations. The physics of the phenomena is discussed from a practical viewpoint.  相似文献

Fine particles play a significant role in many industrial processes. To study the dynamic behavior of fine particle and their deposition in rock fractures, the pneumatic conveying of fine particles (approximately 100 μm in diameter) through a small-scale horizontal slit (0.41 m × 0.025 m) was studied, which is useful for the sealing technology of underground gas drainage in coal mining production. The CFD–DEM method was adopted to model the gas-particle two-phase flow; the gas phase was treated as a continuum and modeled using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), particle motion and collisions were simulated using the DEM code. Then, the bulk movement of fine particles through a small-scale horizontal slit was explored numerically, and the flow patterns were further investigated by visual inspection. The simulation results indicated that stratified flow or dune flow can be observed at low gas velocities. For intermediate gas velocities, the flow patterns showed pulsation phenomena, and dune flow reappeared in the tail section. Moreover, periodic flow regimes with alternating thick and sparse stream structures were observed at a high gas velocity. The simulation results of the bulk movement of fine particles were in good agreement with the experimental findings, which were obtained by video-imaging experiments. Furthermore, the calculated pressure drop versus gas velocity profile was investigated and compared with relative experimental findings, and the results showed good agreement. Furthermore, the particle velocity vectors and voidage distribution were numerically simulated. Selected stimulation results are presented and provide a reference for the further study of fine particles.  相似文献

Discrete element method (DEM) has been used to investigate the effects of particle elastic modulus and coefficient of inter-particle sliding friction on milling of mineral particles. An autogeneous mill of 600 mm diameter and 320 mm length with 14,500 particles has been selected for the simulation. Various mill performance parameters, for example, particle trajectories, collision frequency, collision energy and mill power have been evaluated to understand the effects of particle elastic modulus and inter-particle sliding friction during milling of particles. For the given model, it has been concluded that at high energy range, as the elastic modulus and particle sliding friction increase the energy dissipated among the particles increases. The collision frequency increases with the increase in elastic modulus, however, this trend is not clearly observed with increasing inter-particle sliding friction. The power draw of the mill increases with the increase in fraction of mill critical speed.

Discrete-element-method (DEM) simulations have been performed to investigate the cross-sectional flow of non-spherical particles in horizontal rotating cylinders with and without wall rougheners. The non-spherical particles were modeled using the three-dimensional super-quadric equation. The influence of wall rougheners on flow behavior of grains was studied for increasing particle blockiness. Moreover, for approximately cubic particles (squareness parameters [555]), the rotational speed, gravitational acceleration and particle size were altered to investigate the effect of wall rougheners under a range of operating conditions. For spherical and near-spherical particles (approximately up to the squareness parameters [344]), wall rougheners are necessary to prevent slippage of the bed against the cylinder wall. For highly cubic particle geometries (squareness parameters larger than [3441), wall rougheners resulted in a counter-intuitive decrease in the angle of repose of the bed. In addition, wall rougheners employed in this study were demonstrated to have a higher impact on bed dynamics at higher rotational speeds and lower gravitational accelerations. Nevertheless, using wall rougheners had a comparatively small influence on particle-flow characteristics for a bed composed of finer grains.  相似文献

A new image processing method based on the high-speed camera is proposed to identify, locate, and track clusters. The instantaneous characteristic parameters of particle clusters in the riser of the circulating fluidized bed (CFB) can be acquired, such as solids holdup, vertical velocity, lateral displacement, aspect ratio and near-circularity. Experiments were carried out with glass bead particles, river sand particles and FCC particles. The time series of images of gas–solid flow in a CFB riser with a 100 mm × 25 mm cross-section and 3.2 m in length were obtained using high-speed cameras. The k-means++ clustering algorithm is utilized to identify the clusters, centroid is applied to locate the clusters, and the cross-correlation algorithm is employed to track the specific clusters and number them to get the instantaneous characteristic parameters. The results illustrate that the shapes of clusters in the center area are closest to circle, moving upwards at a uniform speed, while the clusters in the side-wall area are mostly elongated or long chain-like, moving slowly downwards. In the transition area, the clusters are more complex, moving upwards at a constant speed, and having large lateral displacement. The results show that the image processing method used in this study is successful in acquiring the dynamic and structural parameters of the clusters simultaneously.  相似文献

The mixing of particulates such as powders is an important process in many industries including pharmaceuticals, plastics, household products (such as detergents) and food processing. The quality of products depends on the degree of mixing of their constituent materials which in turn depends on both geometric design and operating conditions. Unfortunately, due to lack of understanding of the interaction between mixer geometry and the granular material, limited progress has been made in optimizing mixer design. The discrete element method (DEM) is a computational technique that allows particle systems to be simulated and mixing to be predicted. Simulation is an effective way of acquiring information on the performance of different mixers that is difficult and/or expensive to obtain using traditional experimental approaches. Here we demonstrate how DEM can be used to unravel flow dynamics and assess mixing in several different types of devices. These devices used for mixing and/or granulation of particulates, are classified broadly as gravity controlled, bladed and high shear. We also explore the role of particle shape in mixing performance and use DEM to test whether Froude number scaling is suitable for predicting scale performance of rotating mixers.  相似文献
