For all integers n ≥ 5, it is shown that the graph obtained from the n‐cycle by joining vertices at distance 2 has a 2‐factorization is which one 2‐factor is a Hamilton cycle, and the other is isomorphic to any given 2‐regular graph of order n. This result is used to prove several results on 2‐factorizations of the complete graph Kn of order n. For example, it is shown that for all odd n ≥ 11, Kn has a 2‐factorization in which three of the 2‐factors are isomorphic to any three given 2‐regular graphs of order n, and the remaining 2‐factors are Hamilton cycles. For any two given 2‐regular graphs of even order n, the corresponding result is proved for the graph KnI obtained from the complete graph by removing the edges of a 1‐factor. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Let n≥2 be an integer. The complete graph Kn with a 1‐factor F removed has a decomposition into Hamilton cycles if and only if n is even. We show that KnF has a decomposition into Hamilton cycles which are symmetric with respect to the 1‐factor F if and only if n≡2, 4 mod 8. We also show that the complete bipartite graph Kn, n has a symmetric Hamilton cycle decomposition if and only if n is even, and that if F is a 1‐factor of Kn, n, then Kn, nF has a symmetric Hamilton cycle decomposition if and only if n is odd. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An upper bound on the Ramsey number r(K2,n‐s,K2,n) where s ≥ 2 is presented. Considering certain r(K2,n‐s,K2,n)‐colorings obtained from strongly regular graphs, we additionally prove that this bound matches the exact value of r(K2,n‐s,K2,n) in infinitely many cases if holds. Moreover, the asymptotic behavior of r(K2,m,K2,n) is studied for n being sufficiently large depending on m. We conclude with a table of all known Ramsey numbers r(K2,m,K2,n) where m,n ≤ 10. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 43: 252–268, 2003  相似文献

The main result of this article is a classification of distance-transitive Cayley graphs on dihedral groups. We show that a Cayley graph X on a dihedral group is distance-transitive if and only if X is isomorphic to one of the following graphs: the complete graph K 2n ; a complete multipartite graph K t×m with t anticliques of size m, where t m is even; the complete bipartite graph without 1-factor K n,n nK 2; the cycle C 2n ; the incidence or the non-incidence graph of the projective geometry PG d-1(d,q), d ≥ 2; the incidence or the non-incidence graph of a symmetric design on 11 vertices.  相似文献

The tree partition number of an r‐edge‐colored graph G, denoted by tr(G), is the minimum number k such that whenever the edges of G are colored with r colors, the vertices of G can be covered by at most k vertex‐disjoint monochromatic trees. We determine t2(K(n1, n2,…, nk)) of the complete k‐partite graph K(n1, n2,…, nk). In particular, we prove that t2(K(n, m)) = ? (m‐2)/2n? + 2, where 1 ≤ nm. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we study the existence of a 2‐factor in a K1, n‐free graph. Sumner [J London Math Soc 13 (1976), 351–359] proved that for n?4, an (n?1)‐connected K1, n‐free graph of even order has a 1‐factor. On the other hand, for every pair of integers m and n with m?n?4, there exist infinitely many (n?2)‐connected K1, n‐free graphs of even order and minimum degree at least m which have no 1‐factor. This implies that the connectivity condition of Sumner's result is sharp, and we cannot guarantee the existence of a 1‐factor by imposing a large minimum degree. On the other hand, Ota and Tokuda [J Graph Theory 22 (1996), 59–64] proved that for n?3, every K1, n‐free graph of minimum degree at least 2n?2 has a 2‐factor, regardless of its connectivity. They also gave examples showing that their minimum degree condition is sharp. But all of them have bridges. These suggest that the effects of connectivity, edge‐connectivity and minimum degree to the existence of a 2‐factor in a K1, n‐free graph are more complicated than those to the existence of a 1‐factor. In this article, we clarify these effects by giving sharp minimum degree conditions for a K1, n‐free graph with a given connectivity or edge‐connectivity to have a 2‐factor. For k = 1 and k = 2, we prove that the obvious necessary numerical conditions for packing t pairwise edge‐disjoint k‐regular subgraphs of specified orders m1,m2,… ,mt in the complete graph of order n are also sufficient. To do so, we present an edge‐coloring technique which also yields new proofs of various known results on graph factorizations. For example, a new construction for Hamilton cycle decompositions of complete graphs is given. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Combin Designs 16: 499–506, 2008  相似文献

The complete multipartite graph Kn(m) with n parts of size m is shown to have a decomposition into n-cycles in such a way that each cycle meets each part of Kn(m); that is, each cycle is said to be gregarious. Furthermore, gregarious decompositions are given which are also resolvable.  相似文献

The cycle‐complete graph Ramsey number r(Cm, Kn) is the smallest integer N such that every graph G of order N contains a cycle Cm on m vertices or has independence number α(G) ≥ n. It has been conjectured by Erd?s, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp that r(Cm, Kn) = (m ? 1) (n ? 1) + 1 for all mn ≥ 3 (except r(C3, K3) = 6). This conjecture holds for 3 ≤ n ≤ 5. In this paper we will present a proof for n = 6 and for all n ≥ 7 with mn2 ? 2n. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 44: 251–260, 2003  相似文献

A new upper bound is given for the cycle-complete graph Ramsey number r(Cm, Kn), the smallest order for a graph which forces it to contain either a cycle of order m or a set of n independent vertices. Then, another cycle-complete graph Ramsey number is studied, namely r(?Cm, Kn) the smallest order for a graph which forces it to contain either a cycle of order / for some / satisfying 3?/?m or a set of n independent vertices. We obtain the exact value of r(?Cm Kn) for all m > n and an upper bound which applies when m is large in comparison with log n.  相似文献

For fixed integers m,k2, it is shown that the k-color Ramsey number rk(Km,n) and the bipartite Ramsey number bk(m,n) are both asymptotically equal to kmn as n→∞, and that for any graph H on m vertices, the two-color Ramsey number is at most (1+o(1))nm+1/(logn)m-1. Moreover, the order of magnitude of is proved to be nm+1/(logn)m if HKm as n→∞.  相似文献

Let K m,n be a complete bipartite graph with two partite sets having m and n vertices, respectively. A P v -factorization of K m,n is a set of edge-disjoint P v -factors of K m,n which partition the set of edges of K m,n . When v is an even number, Wang and Ushio gave a necessary and sufficient condition for existence of P v -factorization of K m,n . When k is an odd number, Ushio in 1993 proposed a conjecture. Very recently, we have proved that Ushio’s conjecture is true when v = 4k − 1. In this paper we shall show that Ushio Conjecture is true when v = 4k − 1, and then Ushio’s conjecture is true. That is, we will prove that a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a P 4k+1-factorization of K m,n is (i) 2km≤(2k+1)n, (ii) 2kn≤(2k+1)m, (iii) m+n≡0 (mod 4k+1), (iv) (4k+1)mn/[4k(m+n)] is an integer.  相似文献

An m‐cycle system of order n is a partition of the edges of the complete graph Kn into m‐cycles. We investigate k‐colorings of 4‐cycle systems in which no 4‐cycle is monochromatic. For any k ≥ 3, we construct a k‐chromatic 4‐cycle system. We also show that for any k ge; 2, there exists an integer wk such that for all admissible nwk, there is a k‐chromatic 4‐cycle system of order n. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The undirected power graph G(S) of a semigroup S is an undirected graph whose vertex set is S and two vertices a,bS are adjacent if and only if ab and a m =b or b m =a for some positive integer m. In this paper we characterize the class of semigroups S for which G(S) is connected or complete. As a consequence we prove that G(G) is connected for any finite group G and G(G) is complete if and only if G is a cyclic group of order 1 or p m . Particular attention is given to the multiplicative semigroup ℤ n and its subgroup U n , where G(U n ) is a major component of G(ℤ n ). It is proved that G(U n ) is complete if and only if n=1,2,4,p or 2p, where p is a Fermat prime. In general, we compute the number of edges of G(G) for a finite group G and apply this result to determine the values of n for which G(U n ) is planar. Finally we show that for any cyclic group of order greater than or equal to 3, G(G) is Hamiltonian and list some values of n for which G(U n ) has no Hamiltonian cycle.  相似文献

It was proved by Buratti and Del Fra that for each pair of odd integers r and m, there exists a cyclic m-cycle system of the balanced complete r-partite graph Kr(m) except for the case when r=m=3. In this note, we study the existence of a cyclic m-cycle system of Kr(m) where r or m is even. Combining the work of Buratti and Del Fra, we prove that cyclic m-cycle systems of Kr(m) exist if and only if (a) Kr(m) is an even graph (b) (r, m)≠ (3, 3) and (c) (r,m)≢ (t , 2) (mod 4) where t ∈ {2,3}.  相似文献

In this paper we study three-color Ramsey numbers. Let K i,j denote a complete i by j bipartite graph. We shall show that (i) for any connected graphs G 1, G 2 and G 3, if r(G 1, G 2)≥s(G 3), then r(G 1, G 2, G 3)≥(r(G 1, G 2)−1)(χ(G 3)−1)+s(G 3), where s(G 3) is the chromatic surplus of G 3; (ii) (k+m−2)(n−1)+1≤r(K 1,k , K 1,m , K n )≤ (k+m−1)(n−1)+1, and if k or m is odd, the second inequality becomes an equality; (iii) for any fixed mk≥2, there is a constant c such that r(K k,m , K k,m , K n )≤c(n/logn), and r(C 2m , C 2m , K n )≤c(n/logn) m/(m−1) for sufficiently large n. A Latin square is pan‐Hamiltonian if the permutation which defines row i relative to row j consists of a single cycle for every ij. A Latin square is atomic if all of its conjugates are pan‐Hamiltonian. We give a complete enumeration of atomic squares for order 11, the smallest order for which there are examples distinct from the cyclic group. We find that there are seven main classes, including the three that were previously known. A perfect 1‐factorization of a graph is a decomposition of that graph into matchings such that the union of any two matchings is a Hamiltonian cycle. Each pan‐Hamiltonian Latin square of order n describes a perfect 1‐factorization of Kn,n, and vice versa. Perfect 1‐factorizations of Kn,n can be constructed from a perfect 1‐factorization of Kn+1. Six of the seven main classes of atomic squares of order 11 can be obtained in this way. For each atomic square of order 11, we find the largest set of Mutually Orthogonal Latin Squares (MOLS) involving that square. We discuss algorithms for counting orthogonal mates, and discover the number of orthogonal mates possessed by the cyclic squares of orders up to 11 and by Parker's famous turn‐square. We find that the number of atomic orthogonal mates possessed by a Latin square is not a main class invariant. We also define a new sort of Latin square, called a pairing square, which is mapped to its transpose by an involution acting on the symbols. We show that pairing squares are often orthogonal mates for symmetric Latin squares. Finally, we discover connections between our atomic squares and Franklin's diagonally cyclic self‐orthogonal squares, and we correct a theorem of Longyear which uses tactical representations to identify self‐orthogonal Latin squares in the same main class as a given Latin square. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

It is shown that if F1, F2, …, Ft are bipartite 2‐regular graphs of order n and α1, α2, …, αt are positive integers such that α1 + α2 + ? + αt = (n ? 2)/2, α1≥3 is odd, and αi is even for i = 2, 3, …, t, then there exists a 2‐factorization of Kn ? I in which there are exactly αi 2‐factors isomorphic to Fi for i = 1, 2, …, t. This result completes the solution of the Oberwolfach problem for bipartite 2‐factors. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Crossing numbers of graphs are in general very difficult to compute. There are several known exact results on the crossing number of the Cartesian products of paths, cycles or stars with small graphs. In this paper we study cr(KmPn), the crossing number of the Cartesian product KmPn. We prove that for m ≥ 3,n ≥ 1 and cr(KmPn)≥ (n − 1)cr(Km+2e) + 2cr(Km+1). For m≤ 5, according to Klešč, Jendrol and Ščerbová, the equality holds. In this paper, we also prove that the equality holds for m = 6, i.e., cr(K6Pn) = 15n + 3. A multicolored tree is a tree whose edges have different colors. Brualdi and Hollingsworth 5 proved in any proper edge coloring of the complete graph K2n(n > 2) with 2n ? 1 colors, there are two edge‐disjoint multicolored spanning trees. In this paper we generalize this result showing that if (a1,…, ak) is a color distribution for the complete graph Kn, n ≥ 5, such that , then there exist two edge‐disjoint multicolored spanning trees. Moreover, we prove that for any edge coloring of the complete graph Kn with the above distribution if T is a non‐star multicolored spanning tree of Kn, then there exists a multicolored spanning tree T' of Kn such that T and T' are edge‐disjoint. Also it is shown that if Kn, n ≥ 6, is edge colored with k colors and , then there exist two edge‐disjoint multicolored spanning trees. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
