This paper considers some classes of graphs which are easily seen to have many perfect matchings. Such graphs can be considered robust with respect to the property of having a perfect matching if under vertex deletions (with some mild restrictions), the resulting subgraph continues to have a perfect matching. It is clear that you can destroy the property of having a perfect matching by deleting an odd number of vertices, by upsetting a bipartition or by deleting enough vertices to create an odd component. One class of graphs we consider is the m×m lattice graph (or grid graph) for m even. Matchings in such grid graphs correspond to coverings of an m×m checkerboard by dominoes. If in addition to the easy conditions above, we require that the deleted vertices be apart, the resulting graph has a perfect matching. The second class of graphs we consider is a k-fold product graph consisting of k copies of a given graph G with the ith copy joined to the i+1st copy by a perfect matching joining copies of the same vertex. We show that, apart from some easy restrictions, we can delete any vertices from the kth copy of G and find a perfect matching in the product graph with k suitably large.  相似文献

The problem of whether there exists a graph satisfying a particular set of local constraints can often be reduced to questions of the following sort: given a finite collection Φ of graphs, is there a graph G such that the set of r-neighborhoods of the vertices of G is precisely Φ? It is shown that, although such a question is in general recursively unsolvable, it becomes solvable when a bound on cycle length is imposed on G, even when G is required to be connected or arbitrarily large. This result is used to demonstrate the solvability of a problem from hypergraph theory involving degree sets of k-trees.  相似文献

Wei discovered that the independence number of a graph G is at least Σv(1 + d(v))?1. It is proved here that if G is a connected triangle-free graph on n ≥ 3 vertices and if G is neither an odd cycle nor an odd path, then the bound above can be increased by nΔ(Δ + 1), where Δ is the maximum degree. This new bound is sharp for even cycles and for three other graphs. These results relate nicely to some algorithms for finding large independent sets. They also have a natural matrix theory interpretation. A survey of other known lower bounds on the independence number is presented.  相似文献

A matching M is called uniquely restricted in a graph G if it is the unique perfect matching of the subgraph induced by the vertices that M saturates. G is a unicycle graph if it owns only one cycle. Golumbic, Hirst and Lewenstein observed that for a tree or a graph with only odd cycles the size of a maximum uniquely restricted matching is equal to the matching number of the graph. In this paper we characterize unicycle graphs enjoying this equality. Moreover, we describe unicycle graphs with only uniquely restricted maximum matchings. Using these findings, we show that unicycle graphs having only uniquely restricted maximum matchings can be recognized in polynomial time.  相似文献

The Randi? index of a graph G is defined as , where d(u) is the degree of vertex u and the summation goes over all pairs of adjacent vertices u, v. A conjecture on R(G) for connected graph G is as follows: R(G)≥r(G)−1, where r(G) denotes the radius of G. We proved that the conjecture is true for biregular graphs, connected graphs with order n≤10 and tricyclic graphs.  相似文献

This paper deals with the enumeration of distinct embeddings (both induced and partial) of arbitrary graphs in regular graphs of large girth. A simple explicit recurrence formula is presented for the number of embeddings of an arbitrary forest F in an arbitrary regular graph G of sufficiently large girth. This formula (and hence the number of embeddings) depends only on the order and degree of regularity of G, and the degree sequence and component structure (multiset of component orders) of F. A concept called c-subgraph regularity is introduced which generalizes the familiar notion of regularity in graphs. (Informally, a graph is c-subgraph regular if its vertices cannot be distinguished on the basis of embeddings of graphs of order less than or equal to c.) A central result of this paper is that if G is regular and has girth g, then G is (g ? 1)-subgraph regular.  相似文献

A graph is walk‐regular if the number of closed walks of length ? rooted at a given vertex is a constant through all the vertices for all ?. For a walk‐regular graph G with d+1 different eigenvalues and spectrally maximum diameter D=d, we study the geometry of its d‐spreads, that is, the sets of vertices which are mutually at distance d. When these vertices are projected onto an eigenspace of its adjacency matrix, we show that they form a simplex (or tetrahedron in a three‐dimensional case) and we compute its parameters. Moreover, the results are generalized to the case of k‐walk‐regular graphs, a family which includes both walk‐regular and distance‐regular graphs, and their t‐spreads or vertices at distance t from each other. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A profile on a graph G is any nonempty multiset whose elements are vertices from G. The corresponding remoteness function associates to each vertex xV(G) the sum of distances from x to the vertices in the profile. Starting from some nice and useful properties of the remoteness function in hypercubes, the remoteness function is studied in arbitrary median graphs with respect to their isometric embeddings in hypercubes. In particular, a relation between the vertices in a median graph G whose remoteness function is maximum (antimedian set of G) with the antimedian set of the host hypercube is found. While for odd profiles the antimedian set is an independent set that lies in the strict boundary of a median graph, there exist median graphs in which special even profiles yield a constant remoteness function. We characterize such median graphs in two ways: as the graphs whose periphery transversal number is 2, and as the graphs with the geodetic number equal to 2. Finally, we present an algorithm that, given a graph G on n vertices and m edges, decides in O(mlogn) time whether G is a median graph with geodetic number 2.  相似文献

In this paper info cyclic connectivity is studied in relation to certain matching properties in regular graphs. Results giving sufficient conditions in terms of cyclic connectivity for regular graphs to be factor-critical, to be 3-factor-critical, to have the restricted matching properties E(m, n) and to have defect-d matchings are obtained.  相似文献

The object of study is (2, r 1, r 2)-regular graphs in which the union of the neighborhoods of two different vertices u and w contains r 1 or r 2 vertices, depending on whether u and w are adjacent. It is proved that such graphs either are strongly regular or decompose into the direct sum of a complete multipartite graph and a clique. Earlier, the case r 1 = r 2 was studied by other authors.  相似文献

Let r ≥ 3 be an integer, and ε > 0 a real number. It is shown that there is an integer N(r, ε) such that for all nN (if r is even) or for all even nN (if r is odd), there is an r-connected regular graph of valency r on exactly n vertices whose longest cycles have fewer than εn vertices. That is, the number ε > 0, no matter how small, is a “shortness coefficient” for the family of r-valent regular r-connected graphs.  相似文献

Proposed as a general framework, Liu and Yu [Generalization of matching extensions in graphs, Discrete Math. 231 (2001) 311-320.] introduced (n,k,d)-graphs to unify the concepts of deficiency of matchings, n-factor-criticality and k-extendability. Let G be a graph and let n,k and d be non-negative integers such that n+2k+d?|V(G)|-2 and |V(G)|-n-d is even. If when deleting any n vertices from G, the remaining subgraph H of G contains a k-matching and each such k-matching can be extended to a defect-d matching in H, then G is called an (n,k,d)-graph. Liu and Yu's Papee's paper, the recursive relations for distinct parameters n,k and d were presented and the impact of adding or deleting an edge also was discussed for the case d=0. In this paper, we continue the study begun by Liu and Yu and obtain new recursive results for (n,k,d)-graphs in the general case d?0.  相似文献

Erd?s conjectured that if G is a triangle free graph of chromatic number at least k≥3, then it contains an odd cycle of length at least k 2?o(1) [13,15]. Nothing better than a linear bound ([3], Problem 5.1.55 in [16]) was so far known. We make progress on this conjecture by showing that G contains an odd cycle of length at least Ω(k log logk). Erd?s’ conjecture is known to hold for graphs with girth at least five. We show that if a graph with girth four is C 5 free, then Erd?s’ conjecture holds. When the number of vertices is not too large we can prove better bounds on χ. We also give bounds on the chromatic number of graphs with at most r cycles of length 1 mod k, or at most s cycles of length 2 mod k, or no cycles of length 3 mod k. Our techniques essentially consist of using a depth first search tree to decompose the graph into ordered paths, which are then fed to an online coloring algorithm. Using this technique we give simple proofs of some old results, and also obtain several other results. We also obtain a lower bound on the number of colors which an online coloring algorithm needs to use to color triangle free graphs.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a conjecture of Andries E. Brouwer from 1996 regarding the minimum number of vertices of a strongly regular graph whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components. We show that strongly regular graphs constructed from copolar spaces and from the more general spaces called Δ-spaces are counterexamples to Brouwer?s Conjecture. Using J.I. Hall?s characterization of finite reduced copolar spaces, we find that the triangular graphs T(m), the symplectic graphs Sp(2r,q) over the field Fq (for any q prime power), and the strongly regular graphs constructed from the hyperbolic quadrics O+(2r,2) and from the elliptic quadrics O(2r,2) over the field F2, respectively, are counterexamples to Brouwer?s Conjecture. For each of these graphs, we determine precisely the minimum number of vertices whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components. While we are not aware of an analogue of Hall?s characterization theorem for Δ-spaces, we show that complements of the point graphs of certain finite generalized quadrangles are point graphs of Δ-spaces and thus, yield other counterexamples to Brouwer?s Conjecture. We prove that Brouwer?s Conjecture is true for many families of strongly regular graphs including the conference graphs, the generalized quadrangles GQ(q,q) graphs, the lattice graphs, the Latin square graphs, the strongly regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue −2 (except the triangular graphs) and the primitive strongly regular graphs with at most 30 vertices except for few cases. We leave as an open problem determining the best general lower bound for the minimum size of a disconnecting set of vertices of a strongly regular graph, whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components.  相似文献

For a subset W of vertices of an undirected graph G, let S(W) be the subgraph consisting of W, all edges incident to at least one vertex in W, and all vertices adjacent to at least one vertex in W. If S(W) is a tree containing all the vertices of G, then we call it a spanning star tree of G. In this case W forms a weakly connected but strongly acyclic dominating set for G. We prove that for every r ≥ 3, there exist r-regular n-vertex graphs that have spanning star trees, and there exist r-regular n-vertex graphs that do not have spanning star trees, for all n sufficiently large (in terms of r). Furthermore, the problem of determining whether a given regular graph has a spanning star tree is NP-complete.  相似文献

A graph is called unicyclic if it owns only one cycle. A matching M is called uniquely restricted in a graph G if it is the unique perfect matching of the subgraph induced by the vertices that M saturates. Clearly, μ r (G) ≤ μ(G), where μ r (G) denotes the size of a maximum uniquely restricted matching, while μ(G) equals the matching number of G. In this paper we study unicyclic bipartite graphs enjoying μ r (G) = μ(G). In particular, we characterize unicyclic bipartite graphs having only uniquely restricted maximum matchings. Finally, we present some polynomial time algorithms recognizing unicyclic bipartite graphs with (only) uniquely restricted maximum matchings.  相似文献

A graph G is called preperfect if each induced subgraph G G of order at least 2 has two vertices x, y such that either all maximum cliques of G containing x contain y, or all maximum independent sets of G containing y contain x, too. Giving a partial answer to a problem of Hammer and Maffray [Combinatorica 13 (1993), 199–208], we describe new classes of minimally non-preperfect graphs, and prove the following characterizations: (i) A graph of maximum degree 4 is minimally non-preperfect if and only if it is an odd cycle of length at least 5, or the complement of a cycle of length 7, or the line graph of a 3-regular 3-connected bipartite graph. (ii) If a graph G is not an odd cycle and has no isolated vertices, then its line graph is minimally non-preperfect if and only if G is bipartite, 3-edge-connected, regular of degree d for some d≥3, and contains no 3-edge-connected d -regular subgraph for any 3≤d <d. A graph G is loosely-c-connected, or ?-c-connected, if there exists a number d depending on G such that the deletion of fewer than c vertices from G leaves precisely one infinite component and a graph containing at most d vertices. In this paper, we give the structure of a set of ?-c-connected infinite graphs that form an unavoidable set among the topological minors of ?-c-connected infinite graphs. Corresponding results for minors and parallel minors are also obtained.  相似文献

For a given graph G, if the vertices of G can be partitioned into an independent set and an acyclic set, then we call G a near-bipartite graph. This paper studies the recognition of near-bipartite graphs. We give simple characterizations for those near-bipartite graphs having maximum degree at most 3 and those having diameter 2. We also show that the recognition of near-bipartite graphs is NP-complete even for graphs where the maximum degree is 4 or where the diameter is 4.  相似文献
