The density functionals B3LYP, B3PW91, BMK, HSE06, LC-ωPBE, M05, M06, O3LYP, TPSS, ω-B97X, and ω-B97XD are used to optimize key transition states and intermediates for ethylene addition to Ni(edt)(2) (edt = S(2)C(2)H(2)). The efficacy of the basis sets 6-31G**, 6-31++G**, cc-pVDZ, aug-cc-pVDZ, cc-pVTZ, and aug-cc-pVTZ is also examined. The geometric parameters optimized with different basis sets and density functionals are similar and agree well with experimental values. The ω-B97XD functional gives relative energies closest to those from CCSD, while M06 and HSE06 yield results close to those from CCSD(T). CASSCF and CASSCF-PT2 calculation results are also given. Variation of the relative energies from different density functionals appears to arise, in part, from the multireference character of this system, as confirmed by the T1 diagnostic and CASSCF calculations.  相似文献

We evaluate the performance of ten functionals (B3LYP, M05, M05-2X, M06, M06-2X, B2PLYP, B2PLYPD, X3LYP, B97D, and MPWB1K) in combination with 16 basis sets ranging in complexity from 6-31G(d) to aug-cc-pV5Z for the calculation of the H-bonded water dimer with the goal of defining which combinations of functionals and basis sets provide a combination of economy and accuracy for H-bonded systems. We have compared the results to the best non-density functional theory (non-DFT) molecular orbital (MO) calculations and to experimental results. Several of the smaller basis sets lead to qualitatively incorrect geometries when optimized on a normal potential energy surface (PES). This problem disappears when the optimization is performed on a counterpoise (CP) corrected PES. The calculated interaction energies (ΔEs) with the largest basis sets vary from -4.42 (B97D) to -5.19 (B2PLYPD) kcal/mol for the different functionals. Small basis sets generally predict stronger interactions than the large ones. We found that, because of error compensation, the smaller basis sets gave the best results (in comparison to experimental and high-level non-DFT MO calculations) when combined with a functional that predicts a weak interaction with the largest basis set. As many applications are complex systems and require economical calculations, we suggest the following functional/basis set combinations in order of increasing complexity and cost: (1) D95(d,p) with B3LYP, B97D, M06, or MPWB1k; (2) 6-311G(d,p) with B3LYP; (3) D95++(d,p) with B3LYP, B97D, or MPWB1K; (4) 6-311++G(d,p) with B3LYP or B97D; and (5) aug-cc-pVDZ with M05-2X, M06-2X, or X3LYP.  相似文献

The DNA base lesion spiroiminodihydantoin (Sp) is produced in biological systems endogenously and can cause mutation and cancer. It is considered to be more mutagenic and deleterious than 8‐oxoguanine and other oxidized guanine products such as guanidinohydantoin (Gh) and imidazolone. In this work, the base pairing patterns of Sp with each of the normal nucleic acid bases of DNA have been investigated thoroughly using the B3LYP, M06‐2X, and wB97X‐D functionals of density functional theory in conjunction with the aug‐cc‐pVDZ basis set. It is found that the magnitudes of interaction energies between the bases and Sp follow the order: Sp‐guanine >> Sp‐cytosine > Sp‐adenine > Sp‐thymine. The strong Sp‐guanine abnormal base pairing may be the main cause of the observed mutagenicity of Sp. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Noncovalent interactions of a hydrogen bond donor with an aromatic pi system present a challenge for density functional theory, and most density functionals do not perform well for this kind of interaction. Here we test seven recent density functionals from our research group, along with the popular B3LYP functional, for the dimer of H 2S with benzene. The functionals considered include the four new meta and hybrid meta density functionals of the M06 suite, three slightly older hybrid meta functionals, and the B3LYP hybrid functional, and they were tested for their abilities to predict the dissociation energies of three conformations of the H 2S-benzene dimer and to reproduce the key geometric parameters of the equilibrium conformation of this dimer. All of the functionals tested except B3LYP correctly predict which of the three conformations of the dimer is the most stable. The functionals that are best able to reproduce the geometry of the equilibrium conformation of the dimer with a polarized triple-zeta basis set are M06-L, PWB6K, and MPWB1K, each having a mean unsigned relative error across the two experimentally verifiable geometric parameters of only 8%. The success of M06-L is very encouraging because it is a local functional, which reduces the cost for large simulations. The M05-2X functional yields the most accurate binding energy of a conformation of the dimer for which a binding energy calculated at the CCSD(T) level of theory is available; M05-2X gives a binding energy for the system with a difference of merely 0.02 kcal/mol from that obtained by the CCSD(T) calculation. The M06 functional performs well in both categories by yielding a good representation of the geometry of the equilibrium structure and by giving a binding energy that is only 0.19 kcal/mol different from that calculated by CCSD(T). We conclude that the new generation of density functionals should be useful for a variety of problems in biochemistry and materials where aromatic functional groups can serve as hydrogen bond acceptors.  相似文献

The B3LYP, M06, M06L, M062X, MPW1K, and PBE1PBE DFT methods were evaluated for modeling nickel-catalyzed coupling reactions. The reaction consists of a nucleophilic attack by a carbanion equivalent on the nickel complex, S(N)2 attack by the anionic nickel complex on an alkyl halide, and reductive elimination of the coupled alkane product, regenerating the nickel catalyst. On the basis of CCSD(T)//DFT single-point energies, the B3LYP, M06, and PBE1PBE functionals were judged to generate the best ground state geometries. M06 energies are generally comparable or superior to B3LYP and PBE1PBE energies for transition state calculations. The MP2 and CCSD methods were also evaluated for single-point energies at the M06 geometries. The rate-determining step of this reaction was found to be nucleophilic attack of a L(2)NiR anion on the alkyl halide.  相似文献

Calculated harmonic vibrational frequencies systematically deviate from experimental vibrational frequencies. The observed deviation can be corrected by applying a scale factor. Scale factors for: (i) harmonic vibrational frequencies [categorized into low (<1000 cm?1) and high (>1000 cm?1)], (ii) vibrational contributions to enthalpy and entropy, and (iii) zero‐point vibrational energies (ZPVEs) have been determined for widely used density functionals in combination with polarization consistent basis sets (pc‐n, n = 0,1,2,3,4). The density functionals include pure functionals (BP86, BPW91, BLYP, HCTH93, PBEPBE), hybrid functionals with Hartree‐Fock exchange (B3LYP, B3P86, B3PW91, PBE1PBE, mPW1K, BH&HLYP), hybrid meta functionals with the kinetic energy density gradient (M05, M06, M05‐2X, M06‐2X), a double hybrid functional with Møller‐Plesset correlation (B2GP‐PLYP), and a dispersion corrected functional (B97‐D). The experimental frequencies for calibration were from 41 organic molecules and the ZPVEs for comparison were from 24 small molecules (diatomics, triatomics). For this family of basis sets, the scale factors for each property are more dependent on the functional selection than on basis set level, and thus allow for a suggested scale factor for each density functional when employing polarization consistent basis sets (pc‐n, n = 1,2,3,4). A separate scale factor is recommended when the un‐polarized basis set, pc‐0, is used in combination with the density functionals. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Density Functional Theory employing hybrid and M06 functionals in combination with three different basis sets is used to calculate the ground state of a cage like (ZnO)12 nanocluster which has been consistently reported as the more stable cluster for its particular size. B3LYP and B3PW91 hybrid functionals combined with 6‐31+G*, Lanl2dz and SDD basis sets are employed to treat the ZnO molecular system. Alternatively, three M06 functionals in combination with three basis sets are employed in the nanostructure calculations. Results obtained by treating ZnO sodalite cage nanocluster with M06 functionals demonstrated comparable quality to results obtained with hybrid functionals. Within this study, efficient theoretical DFT methods with the widely known hybrid and the recently created M06 meta‐hybrid functionals are employed to study nanostructured ZnO. Our resulting parameters provide a fresh approach performance wise on the different theoretical methods to treat transition metal nanostructures, particularly, ZnO nanoclusters geometry and electronic structure.  相似文献

The performance of various density functionals along with second-order perturbation treatments has been tested for a set of conjugate addition reactions relevant to stereoselective organocatalysis. It is shown that B3LYP predictions seriously underestimate the reaction energies, whereas two newly designed functionals (M05-2X and M06-2X) and the SCS-MP2 method provide very accurate data. These new methods represent promising alternative approaches in future mechanistic studies.  相似文献

CCSD(T)/CBS energies for stacking of nickel and copper chelates are calculated and used as benchmark data for evaluating the performance of dispersion‐corrected density functionals for calculating the interaction energies. The best functionals for modeling the stacking of benzene with the nickel chelate are M06HF‐D3 with the def2‐TZVP basis set, and B3LYP‐D3 with either def2‐TZVP or aug‐cc‐pVDZ basis set, whereas for copper chelate the PBE0‐D3 with def2‐TZVP basis set yielded the best results. M06L‐D3 with aug‐cc‐pVDZ gives satisfying results for both chelates. Most of the tested dispersion‐corrected density functionals do not reproduce the benchmark data for stacking of benzene with both nickel (no unpaired electrons) and copper chelate (one unpaired electron), whereas a number of these functionals perform well for interactions of organic molecules.  相似文献

We present two new hybrid meta exchange- correlation functionals, called M06 and M06-2X. The M06 functional is parametrized including both transition metals and nonmetals, whereas the M06-2X functional is a high-nonlocality functional with double the amount of nonlocal exchange (2X), and it is parametrized only for nonmetals. The functionals, along with the previously published M06-L local functional and the M06-HF full-Hartree–Fock functionals, constitute the M06 suite of complementary functionals. We assess these four functionals by comparing their performance to that of 12 other functionals and Hartree–Fock theory for 403 energetic data in 29 diverse databases, including ten databases for thermochemistry, four databases for kinetics, eight databases for noncovalent interactions, three databases for transition metal bonding, one database for metal atom excitation energies, and three databases for molecular excitation energies. We also illustrate the performance of these 17 methods for three databases containing 40 bond lengths and for databases containing 38 vibrational frequencies and 15 vibrational zero point energies. We recommend the M06-2X functional for applications involving main-group thermochemistry, kinetics, noncovalent interactions, and electronic excitation energies to valence and Rydberg states. We recommend the M06 functional for application in organometallic and inorganometallic chemistry and for noncovalent interactions. The CASPT2, CCSD, and CCSD(T) levels of wave function theory and seven density functionals were tested against experiment for predicting the ionization potentials and bond dissociation energies of actinoid monoxides and dioxides with their cations. The goal is to guide future work by enabling the choice of an appropriate method when performing calculations on actinoid-containing systems. We found that four density functionals, namely MPW3LYP, B3LYP, M05, and M06, and three levels of wave function theory, namely CASPT2, CCSD, and CCSD(T), give similar mean unsigned errors for actinoid?Coxygen bond energies and for ionization potentials of actinoid oxides and their cations.  相似文献

Water hexamers provide a critical testing ground for validating potential energy surface predictions because they contain structural motifs not present in smaller clusters. We tested the ability of 11 density functionals (four of which are local and seven of which are nonlocal) to accurately predict the relative energies of a series of low-lying water hexamers, relative to the CCSD(T)/aug'-cc-pVTZ level of theory, where CCSD(T) denotes coupled cluster theory with an interative treatment of single and double excitations and a quasi-perturbative treatment of connected triple excitations. Five of the density functionals were tested with two different basis sets, making a total of 16 levels of density functional theory (DFT) tested. When single-point energy calculations are carried out on geometries obtained with second-order M?ller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2), only three density functionals, M06-L, M05-2X, and M06-2X, are able to correctly predict the relative energy ordering of the hexamers. These three functionals predict that the range of energies spanned by the six isomers is 3.2-5.6 kcal/mol, whereas the other eight functionals predict ranges of 1.0-2.4 kcal/mol; the benchmark value for this range is 3.1 kcal/mol. When the hexamers are optimized at each level of theory, all methods are able to reproduce the MP2 geometries well for all isomers except the boat and bag isomers, and DFT optimization changes the energy ordering for seven of the 16 methods tested. The addition of zero-point energy changes the energy ordering for all of the density functionals studied except for M05-2X and M06-2X. The variation in relative energies predicted by the different methods highlights the necessity for exercising caution in the choice of density functionals used in future studies. Of the 11 density functionals tested, the most accurate results for energies were obtained with the PWB6K, MPWB1K, and M05-2X functionals.  相似文献

A benchmark study on all possible density functional theory (DFT) methods in Gaussian09 is done to locate functionals that agree well with CCSD/aug‐cc‐pVTZ geometry and Ave‐CCSD(T)/(Q‐T) interaction energy (Eint) for small non‐covalently interacting molecular dimers in “dispersion‐dominated” (class 1), “dipole‐induced dipole” (class 2), and “dipole‐dipole” (class 3) classes. A DFT method is recommended acceptable if the geometry showed close agreement to CCSD result (RMSD < 0.045) and Eint was within 80–120% accuracy. Among 382 tested functionals, 1–46% gave good geometry, 13–44% gave good Eint, while 1–33% satisfied geometry and energy criteria. Further screening to locate the best performing functionals for all the three classes was made by counting the acceptable values of energy and geometry given by each functionals. The meta‐generalized gradient approximation (GGA) functional M06L was the best performer with total 14 hits; seven acceptable energies and seven acceptable geometries. This was the only functional “recommended” for at least two dimers in each class. The functionals M05, B2PLYPD, B971, mPW2PLYPD, PBEB95, and CAM‐B3LYP gave 11 hits while PBEhB95, PW91B95, Wb97x, BRxVP86, BRxP86, HSE2PBE, HSEh1PBE, PBE1PBE, PBEh1PBE, and PW91TPSS gave 10 hits. Among these, M05, B971, mPW2PLYPD, Wb97x, and PW91TPSS were among the “recommended” list of at least one dimer from each class. Long‐range correction (LC) of Hirao and coworkers to exchange‐correlation functionals showed massive improvement in geometry and Eint. The best performing LC‐functionals were LC‐G96KCIS and LC‐PKZBPKZB. Our results predict that M06L is the most trustworthy DFT method in Gaussian09 to study small non‐covalently interacting systems. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Density functionals with long‐range and/or empirical dispersion corrections, including LC‐ωPBE, B97‐D, ωB97X‐D, M06‐2X, B2PLYP‐D, and mPW2PLYP‐D functionals, are assessed for their ability to describe the conformational preferences of Ac‐Ala‐NHMe (the alanine dipeptide) and Ac‐Pro‐NHMe (the proline dipeptide) in the gas phase and in water, which have been used as prototypes for amino acid residues of peptides. For both dipeptides, the mean absolute deviation (MAD) is estimated to be 0.22–0.40 kcal/mol in conformational energy and 2.0–3.2° in torsion angles ? and ψ using these functionals with the 6‐311++G(d,p) basis set against the reference values calculated at the MP2/aug‐cc‐pVTZ//MP2/aug‐cc‐pVDZ level of theory in the gas phase. The overall performance is obtained in the order B2PLYP‐D ≈ mPW2PLYP‐D > ωB97X‐D ≈ M06‐2X > MP2 > LC‐ωPBE > B3LYP with the 6–311++G(d,p) basis set. The SMD model at the M06‐2X/6‐31+G(d) level of theory well reproduced experimental hydration free energies of the model compounds for backbone and side chains of peptides with MADs of 0.47 and 4.3 kcal/mol for 20 neutral and 5 charged molecules, respectively. The B2PLYP‐D/6‐311++G(d,p)//SMD M06‐2X/6‐31+G(d) level of theory provides the populations of backbone and/or prolyl peptide bond for the alanine and proline dipeptides in water that are consistent with the observed values. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have systematically investigated the electronic structure of the d? metal-salen complexes including the Cr(II)-, Mn(III)-, Fe(IV)-, Mo(II)-, Tc(III)-, and Ru(IV)-salen complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) has been employed, using the BP86 and B3LYP functionals, and the entire M05 and M06 suites of meta-generalized gradient functionals. These results are compared to robust complete active-space self-consistent field (CASSCF) optimized geometries and complete active-space third-order perturbation theory (CASPT3) energies for the lowest singlet, triplet, and quintet states. Although the M06 and M06-L DFT functionals have been generally recommended for computations on complexes that contain main group and transition metals, none of the M0-functionals appear statistically better than the B3LYP functional for the computation of spin-state energy gaps. DFT- and CASSCF-optimized geometries normally agree to within 0.3 ? least root mean squared deviation (LRMSD) for the singlet and triplet structures and less than 0.1 ? LRMSD for the quintet structures. It can be concluded that no DFT functional tested here can be considered reliable over all metal-salen complexes and it is highly recommended that the accuracy of any given DFT functional should be assessed on a case-by-case basis.  相似文献

The energies of homolytic cleavage of the O—H bonds in 36 phenols with various structures were calculated within the scope of density functional theory using a series of exchange-correlation functionals and basis sets. The best agreement between the calculated and experimental data is given by the M06-2X/6-311++G(2d,2p)//B3LYP/6-31G(d) method.  相似文献
