Problems of compression of a plate on a wedge–shaped target by a strong shock wave and plate acceleration are studied using the equations of dissipationless hydrodynamics of compressible media. The state of an aluminum plate accelerated or compressed by an aluminum impactor with a velocity of 5—15 km/sec is studied numerically. For a compression regime in which a shaped–charge jet forms, critical values of the wedge angle are obtained beginning with which the shaped–charge jet is in the liquid or solid state and does not contain the boiling liquid. For the jetless regime of shock–wave compression, an approximate solution with an attached shock wave is constructed that takes into account the phase composition of the plate material in the rarefaction wave. The constructed solution is compared with the solution of the original problem. The temperature behind the front of the attached shock wave was found to be considerably (severalfold) higher than the temperature behind the front of the compression wave. The fundamental possibility of initiating a thermonuclear reaction is shown for jetless compression of a plate of deuterium ice by a strong shock wave.

The solution of the ideal gasdynamic equations describing propagation of a shock wave initiated, for example, by the motion of a piston against an inhomogeneous static background is considered. The solution is constructed in the form of Taylor series in a special time variable which is equal to zero on the shock wave. In the case of weak shock waves divergence of the series serves as the constraint for such an approach. Then the solution is constructed by linearizing the equations about the solution with a weak discontinuity. In the case of a given background the last solution can be always found exactly by solving successively a set of transport equations, all these equations are reduced to linear ordinary differential equations. The presentation begins from the one-dimensional solutions with plane waves and ends by discussion of spatial problems.

The stability of hypersonic viscous gas flow in a shock layer in the neighborhood of a flat plate is considered. The stability of the velocity, temperature, density, and pressure profiles calculated on the basis of the complete viscous shock layer equations is investigated within the framework of the linear stability theory with allowance for the shock wave relations. The calculated perturbation growth rates and phase velocities are compared with the experimental data obtained by means of electron-beam fluorescence.

The propagation of axisymmetric free vibrations in an infinite homogeneous isotropic micropolar thermoelastic plate without energy dissipation subjected to stress free and rigidly fixed boundary conditions is investigated. The secular equations for homogeneous isotropic micropolar thermoelastic plate without energy dissipation in closed form for symmetric and skew symmetric wave modes of propagation are derived. The different regions of secular equations are obtained. At short wavelength limits, the secular equations for symmetric and skew symmetric modes of wave propagation in a stress free insulated and isothermal plate reduce to Rayleigh surface wave frequency equation. The results for thermoelastic, micropolar elastic and elastic materials are obtained as particular cases from the derived secular equations. The amplitudes of displacement components, microrotation and temperature distribution are also computed during the symmetric and skew symmetric motion of the plate. The dispersion curves for symmetric and skew symmetric modes and amplitudes of displacement components, microrotation and temperature distribution in case of fundamental symmetric and skew symmetric modes are presented graphically. The analytical and numerical results are found to be in close agreement.

The instability theory of shock wave was extended from the case with an infinitefront to the case of a channel with a rectangular cross section.First, themathematical formulation of the problem was given which included a system ofdisturbed equations and three kinds of boundary conditions. Then, the general solutionsof the equations upstream and downstream were given and each contained fiveconstants to be determined.Thirdly, under one boundary condition and oneassumption,it was proved that all of the disturbances in front of the shock front andone of the two acoustic disturbances behind the shock front should be zero.Theboundary condition was that all of the disturbed physical quantities should approach tozero at infinity. The assumption was that only the unstable shock wave was concernedhere. So it was reasonable to assumeω=iγ,γwas the instability growth rate andwas a positive real number.Another kind of boundary conditions was that the normaldisturbed velocities should be zero at the solid wall of the cha

The early short time transient response of an L-shaped plate is investigated by the method of reverberation ray matrix (MRRM) and the generalized ray method (GRM). The MRRM and GRM have been successfully used to study the transient elastic wave transmitting in the beams, planar trusses, space frames and infinite layered media. In the present paper, these two methods are extended to investigate the flexural wave propagation in a finite L-shaped Mindlin plate. The reverberation-ray matrix representing the multi-reflected and scattered waves in the L-shaped plate is presented. The rays in the GRM propagating in the L-shaped plate are determined by the shock source and the boundary conditions. From the numerical results, it indicates that the early short time transient responses of L-shaped plate calculated by the MRRM are the same as those by the GRM. The early short time transient acceleration responses are very large, while the early short time transient displacement responses are very small for the L-shaped plate subjected to the unit impulse. Furthermore, the effects of the different shock signals and the plate thickness on the early short time transient responses of the finite L-shaped Mindlin plates are also analyzed.

The principal objective of this paper is to study some unsteady characteristics of an interaction between an incident oblique shock wave impinging a laminar boundary layer developing on a plate plane. More precisely, this paper shows that some unsteadiness, in particular the low frequency unsteadiness, originate in a supercritical Hopf bifurcation related to the dynamics of the separated boundary layer and not necessarily to the coherent structures resulting from the turbulent character of the boundary layer crossing the shock wave. Numerical computations of a shock-wave/laminar boundary-layer interaction (SWBLI) have been compared with a classical test case (Degrez test case) and both two-dimensional and three-dimensional (3D) unsteady Navier–Stokes equations are numerically solved with an implicit dual time stepping for the temporal algorithm and high order AUSM+ scheme for the spatial discretization. A parametric study on the oblique shock-wave angle has been performed to characterize the unsteady behaviour onset. Finally, discussions and assumptions are made about the origin of the 3D low frequency unsteadiness.

The formation of a laminar wake in the flow behind a shock wave when the latter is shed from the trailing edge of a semi-infinite plate is investigated in this paper. It is shown that the flow on the plate and in the wake turns out to be self-similar, dependent on two dimensionless combinations of variables, and the flow on the plate, including the trailing edge, remains steady in a coordinate system coupled to the shock wave (the fact of the flow self-similarity in the wake was first noted in [1]). An analytic solution of the problem of the wake in the neighborhood of the trailing edge is obtained, from which it follows that, in contrast to [2], there is no line of singularities in the nonstationary boundary-layer equations in the flow domain. This fact is also verified by the analysis of the flow in the neighborhood of a line of tagged particles leaving the trailing edge simultaneously with the shock wave. Hence the problem under consideration is solved by the traditional numerical methods using conditions in the initial section (which is taken to be the section in the neighborhood of the trailing edge), on the wake axis, and at an infinite distance away. Approximate formulas are obtained for the longitudinal velocity profiles in the whole range of shock-wave intensities.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 59–66, July–August, 1978.

The transient wave propagation in the finite rectangular Mindlin plate is investigated by the analytical and experimental methods. The generalized ray method (GRM) which has been successfully applied to study the transient responses of beams, planar trusses, space frames and infinite layered media is extended to investigate the transient wave propagation and early short time transient response in finite Mindlin plate. Combining the wave solution, the shock source and the boundary conditions, the ray groups transmitted in the finite rectangular plate can be determined. Numerical simulations and experiments are performed and compared with each other. The results show that the transient wave propagation and early short time transient responses in the finite plate can be studied using the GRM. The early short time transient accelerations are very large for the finite plate subjected to the unit impulse, while the early short time transient displacements are very small. The early short time transient accelerations under the unit impulse are much larger than those under the unit step impulse. The thickness and material characteristics have remarkable effects on the early short time transient responses.

The objective of this study is to understand the flow structures of weak and strong spherical blast waves either propagating in a free field or interacting with a flat plate. A 5th-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme with a 4th-order Runge-Kutta method is employed to solve the compressible Euler/Navier-Stokes equations in a finite volume approach. The real-gas effects are taken into account when high temperature occurs. A shock-tube problem with the real-gas effect is first tested in order to verify the solver accuracy. Moreover, unsteady shock waves moving over a stationary wedge with various wedge angles, resulting in different types of shock wave reflections, are also tested. It is found that the computed results agreed well with the existing data. Second, the propagation of a weak spherical blast wave, created by rupture of a high-pressure isothermal sphere, in a free field is studied. It is found that there are three minor shock waves moving behind the main shock. Third, the problem of a strong blast wave interacting with a flat plate is investigated. The flow structures associated with single and double Mach reflections are reported in detail. It is found that there are at least three local high-pressure regions near the flat plate. On the basis of classical linear theory on longitudinal, torsional and flexural waves in thin elastic rods, and taking finite deformation and dispersive effects into consideration, three kinds of nonlinear evolution equations are derived. Qualitative analysis of three kinds of nonlinear equations are presented. It is shown that these equations have homoclinic or heteroclinic orbits on the phase plane, corresponding to solitary wave or shock wave solutions, respectively. Based on the principle of homogeneous balance, these equations are solved with the Jacobi elliptic function expansion method. Results show that existence of solitary wave solution and shock wave solution is possible under certain conditions. These conclusions are consistent with qualitative analysis.

Tangential discontinuities [1] are introduced in solving several transient and steady-state problems of gas dynamics. These discontinuities are unstable [2] as a result of the effects of viscosity and thermal conductivity. Therefore it is advisable to replace the tangential discontinuity by a mixing region and account for its interaction with the inviscid flows, establishing on the boundaries of this region the conditions of vanishing friction stress and equality of the velocity and temperature components to the corresponding velocity and temperature components of the inviscid flows. This formulation improves the accuracy of the solution of such problems by posing them as problems with irregular reflection and intersection of shock waves [1].The consideration of the interaction of unsteady turbulent mixing regions with the inviscid flow also permits the formulation of several problems in which the effects of viscosity lead to complete rearrangement of the flow pattern (the lambda-configuration) with the interaction of the reflected shock wave with the boundary layer in the shock tube [3,4], the formation of zones of developed separation ahead of obstacles, etc.).In this connection, §1 presents an analysis of the self-similar solutions of the unsteady turbulent mixing equations (a corresponding analysis of the laminar mixing equations which coincide with the boundary layer equations is presented in [1]). It is shown that these self-similar solutions describe, along with the several problems noted above, the problems of the formation of steady jets and mixing zones in the base wake.As an example, §2 presents, within the framework of the proposed schematization, an approximate solution of the problem of the interaction of a shock wave reflected from a semi-infinite wall with the boundary layer on a horizontal plate behind the incident shock wave. The results obtained are applied to the analysis of reflection in a shock tube. Computational results are presented which are in qualitative agreement with experiment [3, 4].

A numerical method, called Direct Analysis, is described and applied to solve the problem of a plate undergoing a large impulsive load. For generality, an expanded, non-linear form of the equations of motion is used and shear correction and rotatory inertia are considered. The wave speeds are calculated from the non-linear equations and appropriate boundary conditions are applied so that reflected waves are included. The results for two types of step loading pulses are presented and compared with previously presented solutions. The response of the plate is discussed and conclusions as to the effects of the non-linearities are given.

Stability of a hypersonic shock layer on a flat plate is examined with allowance for disturbances conditions on the shock wave within the framework of the linear stability theory. The characteristics of the main flow are calculated on the basis of the Full Viscous Shock Layer model. Conditions for velocity, pressure, and temperature perturbations are derived from steady Rankine–Hugoniot relation on the shock wave. These conditions are used as boundary conditions on the shock wave for linear stability equations. The growth rates of disturbances and density fluctuations are compared with experimental data obtained at ITAM by the method of electron-beam fluorescence and with theoretical data of other authors.

The mathematical model of a gasdynamic discontinuity is used in the area of study concerning gas flows with large gradients of gasdynamic functions. Gasdynamic functions before and after the discontinuity meet non-linear algebraic equations called the dynamic compatibility conditions on the discontinuities. Different modes of shock wave structures forming as a result of regular or irregular interference of the incoming discontinuities of different types are described. Ranges of the initial flow parameters definition such that either shock wave structures of different modes take place or interference equations have no solutions are determined. Most attention is given to arbitrary triple shock-wave configurations. Their classification is proposed. Differential characteristics of the steady flow are studied. The notion “differential characteristics” includes first derivatives of the fundamental gasdynamic parameters with respect to natural coordinates and curvatures of the discontinuities surfaces. Effect of unsteadiness on the triple-shock configuration is examined. Some problems arising at creation of complete local theory of steady and propagating gasdynamic discontinuities interference are formulated.
