An experimental study was conducted to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a bio-inspired corrugated airfoil compared with a smooth-surfaced airfoil and a flat plate at the chord Reynolds number of Re C  = 58,000–125,000 to explore the potential applications of such bio-inspired corrugated airfoils for micro air vehicle designs. In addition to measuring the aerodynamic lift and drag forces acting on the tested airfoils, a digital particle image velocimetry system was used to conduct detailed flowfield measurements to quantify the transient behavior of vortex and turbulent flow structures around the airfoils. The measurement result revealed clearly that the corrugated airfoil has better performance over the smooth-surfaced airfoil and the flat plate in providing higher lift and preventing large-scale flow separation and airfoil stall at low Reynolds numbers (Re C  < 100,000). While aerodynamic performance of the smooth-surfaced airfoil and the flat plate would vary considerably with the changing of the chord Reynolds numbers, the aerodynamic performance of the corrugated airfoil was found to be almost insensitive to the Reynolds numbers. The detailed flow field measurements were correlated with the aerodynamic force measurement data to elucidate underlying physics to improve our understanding about how and why the corrugation feature found in dragonfly wings holds aerodynamic advantages for low Reynolds number flight applications.  相似文献

The present paper describes the applicability of the active flow control device, mini electromagnetic flap actuators attached on the leading edge of an airfoil, for the flow separation under both the steady and the unsteady flow conditions in the low Reynolds number region. At first, lift and drag have been measured for a wide variety of the wind speed Reynolds numbers and the angles of attack for the steady flow condition. Then, effects of some simple feedback flow controls, where the time-dependent signal of the lift-drag ratio have been used to detect the stall and served as a trigger to start the actuation, have been explored under the unsteady flow condition for evading the stall. In every low Reynolds number ranging from 30 000 to 80 000, the present actuators worked quite well to delay the stall, increasing in the lift and delaying the stall angle of attack. These aerodynamic modifications by the flap actuators obtained from the steady flow were found to be available even if the manipulation of the actuators started after the stall. Activation threshold of the lift-drag ratio as the input for the feedback control was determined from a stall classification map obtained under the steady flow experiment. Effectiveness of this feedback control was then demonstrated under the condition of the wind speed decrease (Reynolds number from 80 000 to 40 000) keeping the angle of attack constant at 11°, at which the stall occurs without the active control. Immediately after the sudden velocity decrease, the decrease in the lift-drag ratio were detected and the dynamic actuations were successfully started, resulting in evading the stall and keeping high and stable lift. An additional operation of the feedback, in which the running actuation is turned off when the lift-drag ratio shows lower than the second threshold value after operation, was revealed to be effective to keep the high lift force under the condition combined with the wind speed increase and decrease within the low Reynolds number range treated in this study.  相似文献

为研究低速状态合成射流在抑制翼型气流分离和推迟失速方面的控制机理, 开展了NACA0021 翼型失速特性射流控制的风洞试验研究. 通过系统性的模型测力、翼型瞬态流场粒子图像测速和边界层速度测定的对比试验, 深入探索了合成射流各参数对翼型失速特性控制效果的影响规律. 试验结果表明射流偏角在翼型升力和失速迎角控制方面的效果对射流动量系数较为敏感: 当动量系数较大时, 近切向射流的控制效果更好. 射流动量系数为0.033 时, 偏角30°的射流使得翼型升力系数峰值提高23.56%, 失速迎角增大5°; 而动量系数较小时, 偏角较大的射流能够获得最佳控制效果. 射流动量系数为0.0026 时, 法向射流对翼型最大升力系数控制效果最好(提高9.2%).   相似文献

针对所设计的三角形涡流发生器开展用于翼型失速流动控制的风洞实验研究,重点讨论涡流发生器几何参数、方向角、安装位置及实验雷诺数等因素对翼型失速流动控制的影响。实验结果表明:涡流发生器作用下,在干净翼失速迎角后能够形成一个升力几乎不随迎角变化的相对稳定的高升力状态,抑制了失速流动的发生,与此同时阻力大幅下降;本文所设计的涡流发生器方向角过大时会削弱翼型失速流动控制的效果;同一涡流发生器作用下雷诺数过大其失速流动控制效果会急剧恶化,第一种涡流发生器控制翼型失速的雷诺数有效范围略宽于第二种涡流发生器。  相似文献

In the present work, large eddy simulations of the flow field around a NACA-0012 aerofoil near stall conditions are performed at a Reynolds number of 5 × 104, Mach number of 0.4, and at various angles of attack. The results show the following: at relatively low angles of attack, the bubble is present and intact; at moderate angles of attack, the laminar separation bubble bursts and generates a global low-frequency flow oscillation; and at relatively high angles of attack, the laminar separation bubble becomes an open bubble that leads the aerofoil into a full stall. Time histories of the aerodynamic coefficients showed that the low-frequency oscillation phenomenon and its associated physics are indeed captured in the simulations. The aerodynamic coefficients compared to previous and recent experimental data with acceptable accuracy. Spectral analysis identified a dominant low-frequency mode featuring the periodic separation and reattachment of the flow field. At angles of attack α ≤ 9.3°, the low-frequency mode featured bubble shedding rather than bubble bursting and reformation. The underlying mechanism behind the quasi-periodic self-sustained low-frequency flow oscillation is discussed in detail.  相似文献

The present paper highlights results derived from the application of a high-fidelity simulation technique to the analysis of low-Reynolds-number transitional flows over moving and flexible canonical configurations motivated by small natural and man-made flyers. This effort addresses three separate fluid dynamic phenomena relevant to small fliers, including: laminar separation and transition over a stationary airfoil, transition effects on the dynamic stall vortex generated by a plunging airfoil, and the effect of flexibility on the flow structure above a membrane airfoil. The specific cases were also selected to permit comparison with available experimental measurements. First, the process of transition on a stationary SD7003 airfoil section over a range of Reynolds numbers and angles of attack is considered. Prior to stall, the flow exhibits a separated shear layer which rolls up into spanwise vortices. These vortices subsequently undergo spanwise instabilities, and ultimately breakdown into fine-scale turbulent structures as the boundary layer reattaches to the airfoil surface. In a time-averaged sense, the flow displays a closed laminar separation bubble which moves upstream and contracts in size with increasing angle of attack for a fixed Reynolds number. For a fixed angle of attack, as the Reynolds number decreases, the laminar separation bubble grows in vertical extent producing a significant increase in drag. For the lowest Reynolds number considered (Re c  = 104), transition does not occur over the airfoil at moderate angles of attack prior to stall. Next, the impact of a prescribed high-frequency small-amplitude plunging motion on the transitional flow over the SD7003 airfoil is investigated. The motion-induced high angle of attack results in unsteady separation in the leading edge and in the formation of dynamic-stall-like vortices which convect downstream close to the airfoil. At the lowest value of Reynolds number (Re c  = 104), transition effects are observed to be minor and the dynamic stall vortex system remains fairly coherent. For Re c  = 4 × 104, the dynamic-stall vortex system is laminar at is inception, however shortly afterwards, it experiences an abrupt breakdown associated with the onset of spanwise instability effects. The computed phased-averaged structures for both values of Reynolds number are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Finally, the effect of structural compliance on the unsteady flow past a membrane airfoil is investigated. The membrane deformation results in mean camber and large fluctuations which improve aerodynamic performance. Larger values of lift and a delay in stall are achieved relative to a rigid airfoil configuration. For Re c = 4.85 × 104, it is shown that correct prediction of the transitional process is critical to capturing the proper membrane structural response.  相似文献

We present a new mathematical theory explaining the fluid mechanics of subsonic flight, which is fundamentally different from the existing boundary layer-circulation theory by Prandtl–Kutta–Zhukovsky formed 100 year ago. The new theory is based on our new resolution of d’Alembert’s paradox showing that slightly viscous bluff body flow can be viewed as zero-drag/lift potential flow modified by 3d rotational slip separation arising from a specific separation instability of potential flow, into turbulent flow with nonzero drag/lift. For a wing this separation mechanism maintains the large lift of potential flow generated at the leading edge at the price of small drag, resulting in a lift to drag quotient of size 15–20 for a small propeller plane at cruising speed with Reynolds number \({Re\approx 10^{7}}\) and a jumbojet at take-off and landing with \({Re\approx 10^{8}}\) , which allows flight at affordable power. The new mathematical theory is supported by computed turbulent solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations with a slip boundary condition as a model of observed small skin friction of a turbulent boundary layer always arising for \({Re > 10^{6}}\) , in close accordance with experimental observations over the entire range of angle of attacks including stall using a few millions of mesh points for a full wing-body configuration.  相似文献

A direct force measurement technique employing piezoelectric load cells is used to experimentally investigate a two-dimensional airfoil (NACA 0012) undergoing dynamic stall. The load cells are installed at each end of the airfoil and give the force response in two directions in the plane normal to the airfoil axis during oscillations. Experiments are carried out at a Reynolds number based on the airfoil chord equal to 7.7×104, and at four reduced frequencies, k=0.005, 0.01, 0.02, and 0.04. Phase-averaged lift of the airfoil undergoing dynamic stall is presented. It is observed that hysteresis loops of the lift occur both when the airfoil is pitched to exceed its static stall limit and when it is still within its static stall limit, and they grow in size with increasing k at the same pitching mean angle of attack and pitching amplitude. Both the lift and the drag induced by the pitching motion are further analyzed using the methods of higher order correlation analysis and continuous wavelet transforms to undercover their nonlinear and nonstationary features, in addition to classical FFT-based spectral analysis. The results are quantitatively illustrated by an energy partition analysis. It is found that the unsteady lift and drag show opposite trends when the airfoil undergoes transition from the pre-stall regime to the full-stall regime. The degree of nonlinearity of the lift increases, and the lift show a nonstationary feature in the light-stall regime, while the nonlinearity of the drag decreases, and the drag shows nonstationary feature in both the light-stall and the full-stall regimes. Furthermore, the lift and the drag have significant nonlinear interactions as shown by the correlation analysis in the light-stall regime.  相似文献

The influence of the inlet flow formation mode on the steady flow regime in a circular pipe has been investigated experimentally. For a given inlet flow formation mode the Reynolds number Re* at which the transition from laminar to turbulent steady flow occurred was determined. With decrease in the Reynolds number the difference between the resistance coefficients for laminar and turbulent flows decreases. At a Reynolds number approximately equal to 1000 the resistance coefficients calculated from the Hagen-Poiseuille formula for laminar steady flow and from the Prandtl formula for turbulent steady flow are equal. Therefore, we may assume that at Re > 1000 steady pipe flow can only be laminar and in this case it is meaningless to speak of a transition from one steady pipe flow regime to the other. The previously published results [1–9] show that the Reynolds number at which laminar goes over into turbulent steady flow decreases with increase in the intensity of the inlet pulsations. However, at the highest inlet pulsation intensities realized experimentally, turbulent flow was observed only at Reynolds numbers higher than a certain value, which in different experiments varied over the range 1900–2320 [10]. In spite of this scatter, it has been assumed that in the experiments a so-called lower critical Reynolds number was determined, such that at higher Reynolds numbers turbulent flow can be observed and at lower Reynolds numbers for any inlet perturbations only steady laminar flow can be realized. In contrast to the lower critical Reynolds number, the Re* values obtained in the present study, were determined for given (not arbitrary) inlet flow formation modes. In this study, it is experimentally shown that the Re* values depend not only on the pipe inlet pulsation intensity but also on the pulsation flow pattern. This result suggests that in the previous experiments the Re* values were determined and that their scatter is related with the different pulsation flow patterns at the pipe inlet. The experimental data so far obtained are insufficient either to determine the lower critical Reynolds number or even to assert that this number exists for a pipe at all.  相似文献

The behavior of a non-buoyant circular water jet discharged from a contraction nozzle was experimentally investigated. In this experiment, the Reynolds number of the jet, based on the mean velocity results obtained by particle image velocimetry (PIV), ranged from 177 to 5,142. From the experimental results, we found that the cross-sectional profile of the axial velocity for a laminar flow near the nozzle did not show a top-hat distribution, whereas the profiles with Reynolds number higher than 437 were almost top-hat. The length of the zone of flow establishment (ZFE) was found to decrease with increasing Reynolds number. The measured centerline velocity decayed more rapidly and, consequently, approached the theoretical equation earlier near the nozzle as the Reynolds number increased. The decay constant for the centerline velocity of the turbulent cases was relatively lower than that discovered in theory. It is assumed that this probably resulted from the use of the contraction nozzle. Verifying the similarity of the lateral velocity profiles demonstrated that the Gaussian curve was properly approximated only for the turbulent jets and not for the laminar or transitional flows. The jet half width seldom grew for the laminar or transitional flows, whereas it grew with increasing axial distance for the turbulent flows. The spreading rates for the turbulent flows gradually decreased with increasing Reynolds number. The normalized turbulence intensity along the jet centerline increased more rapidly with the axial distance as the Reynolds number increased, and tended to the constant values proposed by previous investigators. The Reynolds shear stress levels were also found to increase as the Reynolds number increased for the turbulent jets.  相似文献

Large Eddy Simulation of the bubble bursting process over a NACA-0012 airfoil at $Re_{c}=10^{5}$ indicates that the flow at a fixed angle of attack below the critical stall value exhibits a short (with respect to Gaster’s criteria, Gaster, Number CP-4 in AGARD, 1966) Laminar Separation Bubble (LSB) at the leading edge of the airfoil. The airfoil is smoothly pitched-up through the static stall angle to reproduce the bursting process of the short LSB that initiates a leading edge stall typical of low Reynolds number airfoil. The temporal evolution of characteristic length scales is monitored during the transient flow. Particular attention is paid to the characteristic time involved during the growth and bursting of the LSB. A recent empirical bursting criterion is used to analyse the LES results.  相似文献

Spatio-temporal velocity fields of an axisymmetric sudden expansion were measured using an ultrasonic velocity profiler and analyzed to investigate the transitional scheme of the spatial structure using two-dimensional Fourier transform and proper orthogonal decomposition techniques. The variation of the zero-crossing point, the fluctuation energy directed upstream and the eigenmode spectrum all have the same transitional scheme as a function of the Reynolds number. The transitional scheme can be classified Re d<1,000 for the laminar regime, Re d=1,000–3,000 for the transitional regime and Re d>3,000 for the turbulent regime. Especially, in the transitional regime, we found large changes in the flow structure at Re d=1,500 and 2,000. The jump at Re d=2,000 is caused by the change in the flow condition upstream. The jump at Re d=1,500 clearly shows a change in the spatial structure of the flow.  相似文献

This paper deals with the investigation of flow field due to clap and fling mechanism using immersed boundary coupled with lattice Boltzmann method. The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), an alternative to Navier–Stokes solver, is used because of its simplicity and computational efficiency in solving complex moving boundary problems. Benchmark problems are simulated to validate the code, which is then used for simulating flow over two elliptic wing of aspect ratio 5 performing clap and fling flapping motion for different flow parameters such as Reynolds number (Re=75, 100, 150), advance ratio (J=10E−3.10E−2,0.2) and frequency (f=0.05 Hz, 0.25 Hz). Numerical simulation is able to capture typical low Reynolds number unsteady phenomena such as, ׳wake vortex wing interaction׳, ׳Kramer effect׳ and ׳delayed stall׳. The results are both qualitatively and quantitatively consistent with experimental observation. The parametric study involving different combinations of Re, f and J depict distinctly different aerodynamic performances providing physical insights into the flow physics. It is observed that a combination of low f, low J and high Re flow results in better aerodynamic performance. Pronounced lift enhancement via leading edge vortices are obtained in unsteady regime (J<1) compared to quasi-steady regime (J>1). The role of leading edge vortices in enhancing lift are investigated by studying the size and strength of these vortices for different flow conditions. For a given Re, the magnitude of maximum lift coefficient decreases with increasing f irrespective of the value of J; while the same is enhanced with the increasing Re.  相似文献

Bio-inspired corrugated airfoils show favourable aerodynamic characteristics such as high coefficient of lift and delayed stall at low Reynolds numbers. Two-dimensional (2D) direct numerical simulation has been performed here on a corrugated airfoil at various angles of attack (0°, +5°, -5°) and Reynolds number of 280 to 6700. The objective is to analyse the pressure variation inside the corrugations and correlate it to the vortex movement across the corrugations and the overall aerodynamic characteristics of the corrugated airfoil. The flow characteristics have been examined based on the local Strouhal numbers in the corrugations of the airfoil. It is observed that the pressure variation in each corrugation is the result of vortex merging and separation in the corrugation which plays a major role in changing the flow characteristics. The Strouhal number of the flow is dictated by the most dominant local Strouhal number. The numerical results are further compared with experimental results obtained using particle image velocimetry, and the two set of results are found to match well. These results are significant because they elucidate the effect of corrugation, angle of attack, and Reynolds number on flow over a corrugated airfoil.  相似文献

The flow bifurcation scenario and heat transfer characteristics in grooved channels, are investigated by direct numerical simulations of the mass, momentum and energy equations, using the spectral element methods for increasing Reynolds numbers in the laminar and transitional regimes. The Eulerian flow characteristics show a transition scenario of two Hopf bifurcations when the flow evolves from a laminar to a time-dependent periodic and then to a quasi-periodic flow. The first Hopf bifurcation occurs to a critical Reynolds number Rec1 that is significantly lower than the critical Reynolds number for a plane-channel flow. The periodic and quasi-periodic flows are characterized by fundamental frequencies ω1 and m· ω1+n·ω2, respectively, with m and n integers. Friction factor and pumping power evaluations demonstrate that these parameters are much higher than the plane channel values. The time-average mean Nusselt number remains mostly constant in the laminar regime and continuously increases in the transitional regime. The rate of increase of this Nusselt number is higher for a quasi-periodic than for a periodic flow regime. This higher rate originates because better flow mixing develops in quasi-periodic flow regimes. The flow bifurcation scenario occurring in grooved channels is similar to the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse transition scenario of Eulerian chaos, observed in symmetric and asymmetric wavy channels.  相似文献

This paper describes an experimental verification of energy supply mechanisms for the streamwise component of the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) at different Reynolds numbers in viscoelastic-fluid flow. We investigated the characteristics of the streamwise turbulent velocity fluctuation by analyzing the production and turbulent diffusion terms in the TKE transport equation. In addition, we reported on the Reynolds-number dependency in a high Reynolds-number regime where direct numerical simulation cannot demonstrate changes in fluid properties. Based on the experimental verification, we proposed a conceptual model of the energy-exchange term between the TKE and the elastic energy, with focusing on the dependency of the fluid properties on the shear stress. This model is indirectly reflected in the streamwise TKE, the instantaneous velocity field, and the wave number relevant to energy-containing eddies. The main gain term of the TKE switches between the energy-exchange term and the production term dependently on the Reynolds number: as the Reynolds number exceeds the value which provides the maximum drag reduction rate, the production term becomes dominant and the magnitude of streamwise TKE becomes high compared to the water flow case.  相似文献

The closely coupled approach combined with the finite volume method (FVM) solver and the finite element method (FEM) solver is used to investigate the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) of a three-dimensional cantilevered hydrofoil in the water tunnel. The FVM solver and the coupled approach are verified and validated by comparing the numerical predictions with the experimental measurements, and good agreement is obtained concerning both the lift on the foil and the tip displacement. In the noncavitating flow, the result indicates that the growth of the initial incidence angle and the Reynolds number improves the deformation of the foil, and the lift on the foil is increased by the twist deformation. The normalized twist angle and displacement along the span of the hydrofoil for different incidence angles and Reynolds numbers are almost uniform. For the cavitation flow, it is shown that the small amplitude vibration of the foil has limited influence on the developing process of the partial cavity, and the quasi two-dimensional cavity shedding does not change the deformation mode of the hydrofoil. However, the frequency spectrum of the lift on the foil contains the frequency which is associated with the first bend frequency of the hydrofoil.  相似文献

This work numerically examines the effect of turbulent and cavitating flow on the hydroelastic response and stability of a hydrofoil. A cantilevered, rectangular, chordwise rigid hydrofoil is modeled as a 2-degrees-of-freedom structure for its spanwise bending and torsional flexibilities. The fluid flow is modeled with the incompressible, Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes equations using an eddy-viscosity turbulence closure model that is corrected for the presence of cavitation, and with a transport equation based cavitation model. The results show that, in general, massive cavitation tends to: (i) reduce the mean lift, (ii) increase the mean drag, (iii) lower the mean deformations, and (iv) delay static divergence, while unsteady sheet/cloud cavitation promotes flow induced vibrations. Such vibrations and load fluctuations could be as large as (and even greater than) the mean values for cases with unsteady cavitation, so dynamic and viscous fluid–structure models are needed to simulate flexible hydrofoils in cavitating flows. In general, the flow induced vibrations, and hence the drag force, are higher with decreasing stiffness. For small leading edge partial cavitation, increasing foil flexibility increases the maximum cavity length and reduces the cavity shedding frequency; however, the influence of foil flexibility is limited for cases where the maximum cavity length is near or beyond the foil trailing edge, because of the relocation of the center of pressure at the elastic axis, near the mid-chord. The results show that the mean deformations are generally limited by stall, and by the quasi-steady linear theory predictions at the fully-wetted and supercavitating limits. Furthermore, frequency focusing can occur when the cavity shedding frequency is near the fundamental system resonance frequencies, and broadening of the frequency spectrum can occur due to excitation of the sub-harmonics and/or modulation induced by the fluctuating cavities, if the cavity shedding frequency is away from the fundamental system resonance frequencies.  相似文献

The flow in a channel with its lower wall mounted with streamwise V-shaped riblets is simulated using a highly efficient spectral-element—Fourier method. The range of Reynolds numbers investigated is 500 to 4000, which corresponds to laminar, transitional, and turbulent flow states. Our results suggest that in the laminar regime there is no drag reduction, while in the transitional and turbulent regimes drag reduction up to 10% exists for the riblet-mounted wall in comparison with the smooth wall of the channel. For the first time, we present detailed turbulent statistics in a complex geometry.
