The nonlinear dynamic behaviors of a double cable-stayed shallow arch model are investigated under the one-to-one-to-one internal resonance among the lowest modes of cables and the shallow arch and external primary resonance of cables. The in-plane governing equations of the system are obtained when the harmonic excitation is applied to cables. The excitation mechanism due to the angle-variation of cable tension during motion is newly introduced. Galerkin's method and the multi-scale method are used to obtain ordinary differential equations(ODEs) of the system and their modulation equations, respectively. Frequency-and force-response curves are used to explore dynamic behaviors of the system when harmonic excitations are symmetrically and asymmetrically applied to cables. More importantly, comparisons of frequency-response curves of the system obtained by two types of trial functions, namely, a common sine function and an exact piecewise function, of the shallow arch in Galerkin's integration are conducted. The analysis shows that the two results have a slight difference; however, they both have sufficient accuracy to solve the proposed dynamic system.

Support stiffness is one of important factors on structure dynamics. Considering the vertical support stiffness, a multi-cable-stayed shallow-arch model of the cable-stayed bridge is established. Its differential equation governing the planar motion of cables and the shallow arch and the boundary conditions are derived by Hamilton’s principle. Firstly, the in-plane free vibration of the system is explored in order to find the modal functions and the possible internal resonances of nonlinear dynamics. Then, the 1:2:2 internal resonance among the different modes of the shallow arch and two cables are investigated by the multiple time scale method and pseudo-arclength algorithm. Meanwhile, the frequency-/force–response curves are used to explore the nonlinear behaviors of the system, especially the influence of vertical support stiffness, excitation frequency and amplitude on the internal resonance of the system is considered. To a certain extent, the support stiffness can reduce the response amplitudes of members by absorbing some energy from excitation.

Through the Galerkin method the nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) in time are obtained from the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) to describe the mo- tion of the coupled structure of a suspended-cable-stayed beam. In the PDEs, the curvature of main cables and the deformation of cable stays are taken into account. The dynamics of the struc- ture is investigated based on the ODEs when the structure is subjected to a harmonic excitation in the presence of both high-frequency principle resonance and 1:2 internal resonance. It is found that there are typical jumps and saturation phenomena of the vibration amplitude in the struc- ture. And the structure may present quasi-periodic vibration or chaos, if the stiffness of the cable stays membrane and frequency of external excitation are disturbed.

In this study, the forced vibration of a curved pipe conveying fluid resting on a nonlinear elastic foundation is considered. The governing equations for the pipe system are formed with the consideration of viscoelastic material, nonlinearity of foundation, external excitation, and extensibility of centre line. Equations governing the in-plane vibration are solved first by the Galerkin method to obtain the static in-plane equilibrium configuration. The out-of-plane vibration is simplified into a constant coefficient gyroscopic system. Subsequently, the method of multiple scales (MMS) is developed to investigate external first and second primary resonances of the out-of-plane vibration in the presence of three-to-one internal resonance between the first two modes. Modulation equations are formed to obtain the steady state solutions. A parametric study is carried out for the first primary resonance. The effects of damping, nonlinear stiffness of the foundation, internal resonance detuning parameter, and the magnitude of the external excitation are investigated through frequency response curves and force response curves. The characteristics of the single mode response and the relationship between single and two mode steady state solutions are revealed for the second primary resonance. The stability analysis is carried out for these plots. Finally, the approximately analytical results are confirmed by the numerical integrations.

In this study, the nonlinear vibrations of an axially moving beam are investigated by considering the coupling of the longitudinal and transversal motion. The Galerkin method is used to truncate the governing partial differential equations into a set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations. By detuning the axially velocity, the exact parameters with which the system may turn to internal resonance are detected. The method of multiple scales is applied to the governing equations to study the nonlinear dynamics of the steady-state response caused by the internal–external resonance. The saturation and jump phenomena of such system have been reported by investigating the nonlinear amplitude–response curves with respect to external excitation, internal, and external detuning parameters. The longitudinal external excitation may trigger only longitudinal response when excitation amplitude is weak. However, beyond the critical excitation amplitude, the response energy will be transferred from the longitudinal motion to the transversal motion even the excitation is employed on the longitudinal direction. Such energy transfer due to saturation has the potential to be used in the vibration suppression.

In this paper, the nonlinear vibration of a single-walled carbon nanotube conveying fluid is investigated utilizing a multidimensional Lindstedt–Poincaré method. Considering the geometric large deformation of the single-walled carbon nanotube and external harmonic excitation force, based on nonlocal elastic theory and Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, the nonlinear vibration equation of a fluid-conveying single-walled carbon nanotube is established. Analyzing the equation through the multidimensional Lindstedt–Poincaré method, and from the solvability condition of the nonlinear vibration equation, the cubic algebraic equation which indicates the amplitude–frequency relation is obtained. Based on the root discriminant of the cubic equation, the first order primary response of the pinned–pinned carbon nanotube is discussed. The relations among internal resonance, the amplitude and frequency of the external excitation force are analyzed in detail. When the external excite force frequency is around the first mode natural frequency, the first mode primary resonance occurs. If simultaneously the first two modes natural frequency ratio is around 3, internal resonance occurs and the internal resonance region depends on the amplitude of external excitation force.

A novel microresonator operating on the principle of nonlinear modal interactions due to autoparametric 1:2 internal resonance is introduced. Specifically, an electrostatically actuated pedal-microresonator design, utilizing internal resonance between an out-of-plane torsional mode and a flexural in-plane vibrating mode is considered. The two modes have their natural frequencies in 1:2 ratio, and the design ensures that the higher frequency flexural mode excites the lower frequency torsional mode in an autoparametric way. A Lagrangian formulation is used to develop the dynamic model of the system. The dynamics of the system is modeled by a two degrees of freedom reduced-order model that retains the essential quadratic inertial nonlinearities coupling the two modes. Retention of higher-order model for electrostatic forces allows for the study of static equilibrium positions and static pull-in phenomenon as a function of the bias voltages. Then for the case when the higher frequency flexural mode is resonantly actuated by a harmonically varying AC voltage, a comprehensive study of the response of the microresonator is presented and the effects of damping, and mass and structural perturbations from nominal design specifications are considered. Results show that for excitation levels above a threshold, the torsional mode is activated and it oscillates at half the frequency of excitation. This unique feature of the microresonator makes it an excellent candidate for a filter as well as a mixer in RF MEMS devices.

In this work, theoretical and experimental analysis of a piezoelectric energy harvester with parametric base excitation is presented under combination parametric resonance condition. The harvester consists of a cantilever beam with a piezoelectric patch and an attached mass, which is positioned in such a way that the system exhibits 1:3 internal resonance. The generalized Galerkin’s method up to two modes is used to obtain the temporal form of the nonlinear electromechanical governing equation of motion. The method of multiple scales is used to reduce the equations of motion into a set of first-order differential equations. The fixed-point response and the stability of the system under combination parametric resonance are studied. The multi-branched non-trivial response exhibits bifurcations such as turning point and Hopf bifurcations. Experiments are performed under various resonance conditions. This study on the parametric excitation along with combination and internal resonances will help to harvest energy for a wider frequency range from ambient vibrations.

The non-linear normal modes (NNMs) and their bifurcation of a complex two DOF system are investigated systematically in this paper. The coupling and ground springs have both quadratic and cubic non-linearity simultaneously. The cases of ω1:ω2=1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 are discussed, respectively, as well as the case of no internal resonance. Approximate solutions for NNMs are computed by applying the method of multiple scales, which ensures that NNM solutions can asymtote to linear normal modes as the non-linearity disappears. According to the procedure, NNMs can be classified into coupled and uncoupled modes. It is found that coupled NNMs exist for systems with any kind of internal resonance, but uncoupled modes may appear or not appear, depending on the type of internal resonance. For systems with 1:1 internal resonance, uncoupled NNMs exist only when coefficients of cubic non-linear terms describing the ground springs are identical. For systems with 1:2 or 1:3 internal resonance, in additional to one uncoupled NNM, there exists one more uncoupled NNM when the coefficients of quadratic or cubic non-linear terms describing the ground springs are identical. The results for the case of internal resonance are consistent with ones for no internal resonance. For the case of 1:2 internal resonance, the bifurcation of the coupled NNM is not only affected by cubic but also by quadratic non-linearity besides detuning parameter although for the cases of 1:1 and 1:3 internal resonance, only cubic non-linearity operate. As a check of the analytical results, direct numerical integrations of the equations of motion are carried out.
