The influence on the optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystal displays (LCDs) was examined for neutral molecule binding by mesogen/receptors in the mesomorphic phase. The motivation was to prepare neutral molecule sensors that use a colour change to signal analyte binding. A receptor that binds barbiturate analytes was modified with two or one cholesteryl groups to yield compounds 2 and 3, respectively. LCDs were prepared by incorporating one of the receptor/mesogen compounds into a cholesteric LC blend along with a potential H‐bonding guest. The optical properties of the LCDs were then determined by measuring the absorbance of the displays. For various LCDs, the colour of the display depended upon several factors: the amount of guest molecule used, the number of cholesteryl side chains on the receptor and the mole concentration of receptor/mesogen in the blend. In particular, complementary host/guest binding of H‐bonding analytes by the bis(cholesteryl) receptor 2 in a cholesteric LCD caused a change of up to +70 nm, which was observed by the naked eye as a blue‐to‐orange colour change. Control experiments confirm that the colour of an LCD is a consequence of molecular recognition in the mesomorphic phase.  相似文献

A new ladder-like 1,4-phenylene-bridged liquid crystalline polysiloxane bearing ester-based mesogenic side groups, LPLCPS, has been synthesized by hydrosilylation of a SiH-terminated ester-based mesogen compound (1) with a ladder-like 1,4-phenylene-bridged polyvinylsiloxane (LPPVS) containing vinyl-terminated side groups in the presence of dicyclopentadienylplatinum(II) chloride (Cp2PtCl2) catalyst. Compound 1 was synthesized by hydrosilylation of 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (HMM) with the vinyl-terminated ester-based mesogenic compounds. Various characterization methods including FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 29Si NMR, polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction were used and the results combined to demonstrate that LPLCPS shows thermotropic smectic mesomorphic behaviour with a high clearing point and a wide mesophase range.  相似文献

In this communication,a new supramolecualr amphiphile was successfully constructed based on water soluble pillar[5]arene and a unique guest which contain a CO2 responsive tertiary amine unit and a UV responsive coumarin group.When guest molecule 1 dispersed in water,it self-assembled into sheet-like structures.Upon bubbling CO2,1 transformed into 1 H due to the tertiary amine unit was protonated,accompany the nano-sheets transformed into vesicles.Further irradiation of 1 H with 365 nm light for 3 h,the coumarin group reacted with each other to form bola-type amphiphie 2 H.In this case,vesicles collapsed and re-assembled into nano-tubes.However,when addition of WPS into the solution of 1 H,the vesicles transformed into micelles,this is due to the formation of supramolecular amphiphile WP5&1 H.Upon irradiation of WP5&1 H with 365 nm light for 3 h,nano-ribbons observed instead of micelles in the solution.Notably,nanotubes from 2 H could also transform into nano-ribbons after adding WPS.The selfassembly process and the resultant assemblies were characterized by TEM,SEM,DLS,SAXS and NMR technologies.Due to both CO2 and light are "green" for living organisms,we anticipated our system can offer the possibilities in "on demand" drug absorption and release.  相似文献

We have synthesized a new series of polyphenylene compounds with a pyridine ring, 2-(4-n-alkoxyphenyl)-5-methylpyridines (CH3C5H3NC6H4OCiH2i1) (1a-i; the carbon number, i, of the alkoxy group is 1-9), and studied their phase transitions and mesogenicity using DSC and polarizing microscopy. In the homologous series of 1a-i, no mesomorphic phase appeared for i=1-5 and only a monotropic nematic phase was observed for i=6-9. The mesomorphic potential is relatively weaker for the 1a-i than for the 2a-i and 3a-i homologues, which are pyridine-containing three- and four-ring similar systems. This lowering of the mesogenicity may be due to the lack of a phenyl ring between the pyridine ring and the methyl group in the 1a-i homologues.  相似文献

The hexa-4-dodecyloxybenzoyl derivative 1 of azacrown [18]-N6 was originally reported to have a 'tubular' mesophase on the basis of its large central ring and 6-fold symmetry. Starting in the mesophase, annealing of 1 under a cover slip results in formation of a new crystalline phase that melts directly to an isotropic liquid at the temperature previously observed for the mesophase to isotropic transition. Thus the phase behaviour of 1 is kinetically controlled. The analogous hexa-3,4-bisdodecyloxybenzoyl derivative 2 of azacrown [18]-N6 has no kinetic limitations to its phase changes and has an enantiotropic columnar liquid crystalline phase. We have synthesized side chain copolysiloxanes with a (CH2)11 spacer and 75-84 per cent by weight of the same 4-dodecyloxybenzoyl-[18]-N6 mesogen. The polysiloxanes also display a liquid crystalline phase.  相似文献

Under catalysis of montmorillonites, arenes could be cholesterylated by cholesterol (1) via a Friedel-Crafts alkylation.1 When phenols were employed as substrates for that reaction, aryl cholesteryl ethers were obtained instead of aryl cholestenes.2 However, β-naphthol (2a) and α-naphthol (2b) gave obviously different products. We report here the identification of these unexpected products from the reaction of 2 with 1 catalysed by montmorillonite K 10.  相似文献

The synthesis, characterization and mesomorphic properties of a new type of liquid crystalline compound, the 2,5-bis(3,4,5-trialkoxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazoles, 3a-3h, are reported. These heterocyclic compounds are derived from unsaturated 1,3,4-oxadiazole as the core group, and obtained by the condensation reaction of 3,4,5-trialkoxybenzoic acid N-(3,4,5-trialkoxybenzoyl)-hydrazides and phosphorus oxychloride in toluene under reflux. All compounds were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The mesomorphic properties of these and the related compounds 1, 2 were characterized and studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. The formation of columnar mesophases was found to be dependent on the numbers of alkoxy sidechains. The compounds 3 exhibited hexagonal columnar (Colh) phases, however compounds 1, 2 formed crystalline phases. Compounds 3b-3e with shorter carbon chains were room temperature liquid crystals. Polar induction by nitrogen and/or oxygen atoms on the heterocyclic core ring might be responsible for the formation and better observed mesomorphic properties in this type of compound.  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of new Schiff 's bases (series 3a-f) and azo compounds (4a-f) incorporating pyridine and 1,3,4-thiadiazole rings are reported. The first homologues in the series of Schiff's bases (3a-c) show a monotropic mesophase and the homologues 3d-f display an enantiotropic SmA phase. The only azo compounds to exhibit liquid crystalline properties are the homologues 4e, f which show a monotropic nematic phase. These series are compared with Schiff's bases and azo compounds analogues (series 5 and 6), previously reported by us and an AM1 study of the structure/mesomorphic property relationship is described.  相似文献

The liquid crystalline properties of two series of non-symmetric liquid crystal dimers consisting of cholesterol and Schiff base moieties interconnected by ω-oxyalkanoyl spacers of varying length are compared: one series (SBOC- n ) carry the octyloxy tail on the Schiff base mesogen, and the other (SBOF- n ) a perfluoroheptylmethyloxy tail. In general, compounds with the fluorinated alkoxy tail exhibited mesophases over a much wider temperature range than those with the alkoxy tail. The latter series favoured the formation of more diverse mesophases than the former. SBOC-4, -5 and -7, and SBOF-4, -5 and -10 formed the chiral smectic C phase.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of a series of new polyacrylates 1, containing the azobenzene mesogen spaced from the backbone by a hexamethylene segment and substituted in the 4-position by an alkanoyl chain of variable length, together with those of the relevant precursors are reported. Optical and X-ray analyses provided evidence for the presence of a smectic A mesophase in a fairly broad range of temperature in both polymers and low molar mass compounds. In polyacrylates 1, the side-chain substituents were fully interdigitated in a smectic A1 structure. The comparison of the transition parameters of polymers 1 with those of another series of polyacrylates 7 containing the azobenzene unit substituted in the 4-position by an alkyloxy chain of variable length revealed that the replacement of an oxygen atom by a carbonyl group strongly enhanced the smectogenic character of the azobenzene group.  相似文献

A new series of 1,1'-disubstituted ferrocene compounds of the type [(η5-C5H4(CH2)nOC6H4C6H4CN]2Fe (3a-d, n = 5, 6, 8, 11) incorporating a variable length alkyloxy cyanobiphenyl unit has been prepared and their mesomorphic properties have been investigated. Compounds 3b, c and d exhibit a thermotropic smectic C phase and 3c also exhibits a monotropic smectic A phase over a fairly wide range near ambient temperature.  相似文献

New liquid crystal compounds, (+)-4-[5-(2-methylbutyl)-1,3-dioxan-2-yl] phenyl 4-alkoxybenzoates (5), were synthesized. The mesomorphic behaviour of these compounds is compared with that of (+)-4-(5-alkyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl)-phenyl 4-(2-methylbutoxy)benzoates (6). While compounds 6 exhibited a chiral smectic C phase, the corresponding compounds 5 did not. This might mean that for the appearance of a chiral smectic C phase in these types of compounds, it is necessary that the carbonyl and the chiral groups exist at nearby positions. Transition temperatures to those isotropic state for compounds 5 were lower than those for compounds 6. This result is common in both cases of (+)-4-alkoxycarbonylphenyl-4-[5-(2-methylbutyl)-1,3-dioxan-2-yl]benzoates (7), and (+)-4-(2-methylbutoxy-carbonyl)phenyl 4-(5-alkyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl)-benzoates (8).  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of new series of 1,2,4- and 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives (2a-f and 5a-f respectively) are reported. These compounds contain only one terminal flexible alkoxy chain, the other terminal substituent is a protecting benzyl group. All compounds of series 2 exhibit an enantiotropic nematic phase. The homologue with the longest chain (2f) displays an enantiotropic dimorphism smectic A- nematic. None of the compounds of series 5 shows mesomorphism and only crystal-isotropic transitions were observed. The liquid crystalline properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray measurements. Luminescence properties, in chloroform solution, of 2f and the series 5 compounds were evaluated. Good photoluminescence quantum yields for compounds of series 5 were observed. Compound 2f, incorporating the 1,2,4-oxadiazole ring shows a very strong reduction in emissive properties.  相似文献

The synthesis, characterization, and mesomorphic properties of a new type of heteronuclear compounds 1a-c and a Pd complex 1d derived from benzoxazole as the core group are reported. These compounds were prepared by the ring closure reaction of 4-alkoxybenzoic acid 4-[(4-alkoxy-2-hydroxyphenylimino)methyl]phenyl esters 6 in the presence of lead(IV) acetate. All the compounds were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies and elemental analysis. The phase behaviour of these mesogenic compounds was characterized and studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. All the compounds 1a exhibited nematic (N) and/or smectic C (SmC) phases, as expected for rod-like molecules; however, the compounds 1b and 1c exhibited crystal phases. For those compounds 1a having shorter carbon chains (n = 1, 3, 4) nematic phases were observed, whereas for compounds having longer carbon chains (n = 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14) smectic C behaviour was also observed at lower temperatures. The greater aspect ratio (l/d) of compounds 1a compared with 1b and 1c was found to be required for the observation of liquid crystallinity. The fluorescent properties of these compounds were also examined. All λmax peaks of the absorption and photoluminescence spectra of compounds 1a-1c occurred at c. 316-322 nm and 371-382 nm, respectively. The quantum yields of some compounds were relatively low, and also slightly solvent-dependent.  相似文献

Langmuir-Blodgett films of a discotic mesogenic pyrylium tetrafluoroborate salt (1) have been investigated from the point of view of their in-plane anisotropy, i.e. considering the average molecular orientation with respect to the dipping direction. The molecules are found to stand on edge with their flat polycyclic core more or less perpendicular to the dipping direction. Mixing 1 with N(C4H9)4+ TCNQ- in the spreading solvent leads to a different behaviour of the monolayer at the air-water interface, involving the formation of the Pyrylium-TCNQ salt. In contrast to the films of pure 1, these films do not exhibit any in-plane anisotropy after deposition on a solid substrate. The temperature dependance of the molecular anisotropy of both films has also been investigated. The results are presented and discussed in the framework of their mesomorphic properties together with the influence of the anion associated with Pyrylium.  相似文献

A series of new liquid crystalline compounds, indolinobenzospiropyranyl aryliminobenzoates, 1a-d, have been synthesized and their mesomorphic properties characterized. Analysis by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction showed that the benzoates 1a and 1d form a monotropic mesophase, whereas 1b and 1c show an enantiotropic mesophase. Enantiomorphic properties are uncommon to spiropyran-containing LC molecules. Among the compounds investigated, 1a was found to exhibit a monotropic SmC phase between 90 and 79°C.  相似文献

The induction of a nematic columnar phase in a discotic hexagonal ordered phase forming system is achieved by mixing hexakispentyloxytriphenylene 1 with a long chain derivative of trinitrofluorenone 3. The difference in chain length has a strong influence on the packing behaviour due to steric effects. The long hydrocarbon chains of the acceptor introduce a strong asymmetry into the electron donor acceptor complex. It could be shown by differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy and X-ray measurements that a nematic columnar phase is formed. In this mesophase the triphenylenes form columns but no hexagonal or orthorhombic lattice is built up. Each column behaves like a rod-like nematic mesogen. To prove that the long hexadecane alkyl chains of the acceptor are responsible for this induction, the acceptor 3 was mixed with the non-liquid-crystalline triphenylene derivative 2 containing six hexadecyloxy side groups. The long alkyl chains of the acceptor dissolve perfectly in the side chain region of the discs. No asymmetry is induced and the columns formed can be arranged on a hexagonal lattice resulting in a Dho phase.  相似文献

Novel porphyrin derivatives with twelve flexible alkyl chains, namely meso-tetra[4-(3,4,5-n-trialkoxybenzoylamino)phenyl]porphyrins (1a, n = 12; 1b, n = 16) and the zinc complex (2a) were synthesized. The mesomorphic properties were investigated by DSC, WAXD and polarizing optical microscopy; the results showed that 1a and 2a exhibit a pseudo-hexagonal columnar phase, and 1b a rectangular (Col) phase over a wide temperature range including room temperature.  相似文献
