Summary Let denote the congruence of null geodesics associated with a given optical observer inV 4. We prove that determines a unique collection of vector fieldsM() ( =1, 2, 3) and (0) overV 4, satisfying a weak version of Killing's conditions. This allows a natural interpretation of these fields as the infinitesimal generators of spatial rotations and temporal translation relative to the given observer. We prove also that the definition of the fieldsM() and (0) is mathematically equivalent to the choice of a distinguished affine parameter f along the curves of, playing the role of a retarded distance from the observer. The relation between f and other possible definitions of distance is discussed.

Since the temperature is not an additive function, the traditional thermodynamic point of view suggests that the volume integral of the temperature has no precise physical meaning. This observation conflicts with the customary analysis of non-isothermal catalytic reactors, heat pipes, driers, geothermal processes, etc., in which the volume averaged temperature plays a crucial role. In this paper we identify the thermodynamic significance of the volume averaged temperature in terms of a simple two-phase heat transfer process. Given the internal energy as a function of the point temperature and the density
we show that the volume averaged internal energy is represented by e = F(T , )when e is a linear function of T and , or when the traditional length-scale constraints associated with the method of volume averaging are satisfied. When these conditions are not met, higher order terms involving the temperature gradient and the density gradient appear in the representation for e .

The harmonic content of the nonlinear dynamic behaviour of 1% polyacrylamide in 50% glycerol/water was studied using a standard Model R 18 Weissenberg Rheogoniometer. The Fourier analysis of the Oscillation Input and Torsion Head motions was performed using a Digital Transfer Function Analyser. In the absence of fluid inertia effects and when the amplitude of the (fundamental) Oscillation Input motion I is much greater than the amplitudes of the Fourier components of the Torsion Head motion Tn empirical nonlinear dynamic rheological propertiesG n (, 0),G n (, 0) and/or n (, 0), n (, 0) may be evaluated without a-priori-knowledge of a rheological constitutive equation. A detailed derivation of the basic equations involved is presented.Cone and plate data for the third harmonic storage modulus (dynamic rigidity)G 3 (, 0), loss modulusG 3 (, 0) and loss angle 3 (, 0) are presented for the frequency range 3.14 × 10–2 1.25 × 102 rad/s at two strain amplitudes, CP 0 = 2.27 and 4.03. Composite cone and plate and parallel plates data for both the third and fifth harmonic dynamic viscosities 3 (, 0), S (, 0) and dynamic rigiditiesG 3 (, 0),G 5 (, 0) are presented for strain amplitudes in the ranges 1.10 CP 0 4.03 and 1.80 PP 0 36 for a single frequency, = 3.14 × 10–1 rad/s. The behavior of the neutral stability curves is investigated for various values of the particle relaxation time and mass concentration 0 100 and 0 f 0.1. It is shown that as increases from zero the flow is at first destabilized and then at >6 becomes stable, while at >40 the stabilizing effect of the dispersed phase grows weaker. It is found that there is a certain interval 10< <40 on which the flow is most stable.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 46–53, January–February, 1986.

Interaction of a parallel fast MHD shock with a layer of decreased density is discussed using ideal MHD approach. This is an extrapolation of gas dynamic thermal layer effect on ideal MHD. Computer simulations show that a magnetic field of a moderate intensity ( 1) may change the character of the flow for intermediate Mach numbers (M 5) and a new raking regime may occur which is not observed in the absence of a magnetic field. Self similar precursor analogous to that in gas dynamics may develop in the case of highM and low density in the layer but magnetic forces essentially decrease its growth rate. This problem appears in connection with cosmical shock propagation where planetary magnetic tails play the role of the thermal layer, and it may also be observed in the laboratory when the shock is strong enough to heat the walls ahead of it.This article was processed using Springer-Verlag TEX Shock Waves macro package 1.0 and the AMS fonts, developed by the American Mathematical Society.

In this paper, the macroscopic dispersion resulting from one and twodimensional flows through a semiconfined aquifer with spatially variable hydraulic conductivity K which is represented by a stationary (statistically homogeneous) random process is analyzed using the spectral representation technique. Stochastic fluctuation equations of the steady flow and solute transport are solved to construct the macroscopic dispersive flux and evaluate the resulting macrodispersivity tensor in terms of the leakage factor and input covariances describing the hydraulic conductivity in a semiconfined aquifer bounded by a leaky layer above and an impervious stratum below. The macrodispersivity tensor is studied using some convenient forms of the log hydraulic conductivity process. The sensitivity of the resulting macrodispersivity to the input covariances is discussed along with the influence of the leakage factor for both one and twodimensional flows. It is found that the longitudinal macrodispersivities are increased due to the presence of leakage, while the transverse macrodispersivities are reduced due to leakage.

In this paper we study differential equations of the formx(t) + x(t)=f(x(t)), x(0)=x 0 C HereC is a closed, bounded convex subset of a Banach spaceX,f(C) C, and it is often assumed thatf(x) is a quadratic map. We study the differential equation by using the general theory of nonexpansive maps and nonexpansive, non-linear semigroups, and we obtain sharp results in a number of cases of interest. We give a formula for the Lipschitz constant off: C C, and we derive a precise explicit formula for the Lipschitz constant whenf is quadratic,C is the unit simplex inR n, and thel 1 norm is used. We give a new proof of a theorem about nonexpansive semigroups; and we show that if the Lipschitz constant off: CC is less than or equal to one, then limtf(x(t))–x(t)=0 and, if {x(t):t 0} is precompact, then limtx(t) exists. Iff¦C=L¦C, whereL is a bounded linear operator, we apply the nonlinear theory to prove that (under mild further conditions on C) limt f(x(t))–x(t)=0 and that limt x(t) exists if {x(t):t 0} is precompact. However, forn 3 we give examples of quadratic mapsf of the unit simplex ofR n into itself such that limt x(t) fails to exist for mostx 0 C andx(t) may be periodic. Our theorems answer several questions recently raised by J. Herod in connection with so-called model Boltzmann equations.

We consider a surface S = (), where 2 is a bounded, connected, open set with a smooth boundary and : 3 is a smooth map; let () denote the components of the two-dimensional linearized strain tensor of S and let 0 with length 0 > 0. We assume the the norm ,|| ()||0, in the space V0() = { H1() × H1() × L2(); = 0 on 0 } is equivalent to the usual product norm on this space. We then establish that this assumption implies that the surface S is uniformly elliptic and that we necessarily have 0 = .

We consider the equation a(y)uxx+divy(b(y)yu)+c(y)u=g(y, u) in the cylinder (–l,l)×, being elliptic where b(y)>0 and hyperbolic where b(y)<0. We construct self-adjoint realizations in L2() of the operatorAu= (1/a) divy(byu)+(c/a) in the case ofb changing sign. This leads to the abstract problem uxx+Au=g(u), whereA has a spectrum extending to + as well as to –. For l= it is shown that all sufficiently small solutions lie on an infinite-dimensional center manifold and behave like those of a hyperbolic problem. Anx-independent cross-sectional integral E=E(u, ux) is derived showing that all solutions on the center manifold remain bounded forx ±. For finitel, all small solutionsu are close to a solution on the center manifold such that u(x)-(x) Ce -(1-|x|) for allx, whereC and are independent ofu. Hence, the solutions are dominated by hyperbolic properties, except close to the terminal ends {±1}×, where boundary layers of elliptic type appear.

We carry out a stochastic-perturbation analysis of a one-dimensional convection–dispersion-reaction equation for reversible first-order reactions. The Damköhler number, Da, is distributed randomly from a distribution that has an exponentially decaying correlation function, controlled by a correlation length, . Zeroth- and first-order approximations of the dispersion coefficient, D are computed from moments of the residence-time distribution obtained by solving a one-dimensional network model, in which each unit of the network represents a Darcy-level transport unit, and the solution of the transfer function in zeroth- and first-order approximations of the transport equation. In the zeroth-order approximation, the dispersion coefficient is calculated using the convection–dispersion-reaction equation with constant parameters, that is, perturbation corrections to the local equation are ignored. This zeroth-order dispersion coefficient is a linear function of the variance of the Damköhler number, (Da)2. A similar result was reported in a two-dimensional network simulation. The zeroth-order approximation does not give accurate predictions of mixing or spreading of a plume when Damköhler numbers, Da 1 and its variance, (Da)2 > 0.25 Da2. On the other hand, the first-order theory leads to a dispersion coefficient that is independent of the reaction parameters and to equations that do accurately predict mixing and spreading for Damköhler numbers and variances in the range (Da)2/Da0.3  相似文献

A mathematical model of mechanics of a twovelocity twotemperature mixture of gases is developed. Based on this model, evolution of the mixing layer of two gases with different densities under the action of shock and compression waves is considered by methods of mathematical simulation in the onedimensional unsteady approximation. In the asymptotic approximation of the full model, a solution of an initialboundary problem is obtained, which describes the formation of a diffusion layer between two gases. Problems of interaction of shock and compression waves with the diffusion layer are solved numerically in the full formulation. It is shown that the layer is compressed as the shock wave traverses it; the magnitude of compression depends on shockwave intensity. As the shock wave passes from the heavy gas to the light gas, the mixing layer becomes overcompressed and expands after shockwave transition. The wave pattern of the flow is described in detail. The calculated evolution of the mixinglayer width is in good agreement with experimental data.

Positively invariant regions for a problem in phase transitions
Positively invariant regions for the system v t + p(W) x = V xx , W t V x = W xx are constructed where p < 0, w < , w > , p(w) = 0, w , > 0. Such a choice of p is motivated by the Maxwell construction for a van der Waals fluid. The method of an analysis is a modification of earlier ideas of Chueh, Conley, & Smoller [1]. The results given here provide independent L bounds on the solution (w, v).Dedicated to Professor James Serrin on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday

A theory proposed by the author as representative of the flow of a general suspension contains three interaction forces, f, S and N. For a quasi-concentrated suspension and for a dilute suspension, N and S, N are omitted, respectively. For the latter special case, we treat diffusion of a fluid through an elastic solid. For a quasi-concentrated suspension, we show that F and S depend on the gradient of the motion gradient. We demonstrate the existence of interesting phenomena: non-simple behavior, dissipative effects, generalized lift and drag forces.Presented at the second conference Recent Developments in Structured Continua, May 23 – 25, 1990, in Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada.

Summary The paper shows that the existence of irrotational surface waves established by an investigation of Levi-Civita may be extended till the breaking, but that it is valid when is 0,84 p 1 (and when p1=np with n whole number). No solution is known till to day when is p<0,84 (and when is 1,00<p1<<1,68).

Mass transfer with chemical reaction in a laminar falling film
An analytical solution is presented for gas absorption in a laminar falling film with first-order homogeneous and heterogeneous chemical reaction and external gas-phase mass transfer resistance. The solution depends on three dimensionless parametersBi, and, wich represent the Biot number, homogeneous and heterogeneous reaction parameters, respectively. It is shown that for fixed values ofBi and, the rate of gas absorption (per unit breadth) over a certain length; (dimensionless) along the falling film measured from the point where surface absorption begins is independent of if < 0.6. For 0.6, this fluxQ increases with but reaches a saturation value at=10 beyond whichQ increases very slowly. But for given and zero gas film resistance (Bi ),Q increases with for all 0.
