In this paper we derive some pointwise error estimates for the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for solving second-order elliptic problems in (). Our results show that the pointwise errors of both the vector and scalar approximations of the LDG method are of the same order as those obtained in the norm except for a logarithmic factor when the piecewise linear functions are used in the finite element spaces. Moreover, due to the weighted norms in the bounds, these pointwise error estimates indicate that when at least piecewise quadratic polynomials are used in the finite element spaces, the errors at any point depend very weakly on the true solution and its derivatives in the regions far away from . These localized error estimates are similar to those obtained for the standard conforming finite element method.

In this paper, we study the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) methods for two‐dimensional nonlinear second‐order elliptic problems of the type uxx + uyy = f(x, y, u, ux, uy) , in a rectangular region Ω with classical boundary conditions on the boundary of Ω . Convergence properties for the solution and for the auxiliary variable that approximates its gradient are established. More specifically, we use the duality argument to prove that the errors between the LDG solutions and the exact solutions in the L2 norm achieve optimal (p + 1)th order convergence, when tensor product polynomials of degree at most p are used. Moreover, we prove that the gradient of the LDG solution is superclose with order p + 1 toward the gradient of Gauss–Radau projection of the exact solution. The results are valid in two space dimensions on Cartesian meshes using tensor product polynomials of degree p ≥ 1 , and for both mixed Dirichlet–Neumann and periodic boundary conditions. Preliminary numerical experiments indicate that our theoretical findings are optimal.  相似文献

A combined method consisting of the mixed finite element method for flow and the local discontinuous Galerkin method for transport is introduced for the one-dimensional coupled system of incompressible miscible displacement problem. Optimal error estimates in L∞(0,T;L2) for concentration c,in L2(0,T;L2)for cxand L∞(0,T;L2) for velocity u are derived. The main technical difficulties in the analysis include the treatment of the inter-element jump terms which arise from the discontinuous nature of the numerical method, the nonlinearity, and the coupling of the models. Numerical experiments are performed to verify the theoretical results. Finally,we apply this method to the one-dimensional compressible miscible displacement problem and give the numerical experiments to confirm the efficiency of the scheme.  相似文献

The local discontinuous Galerkin method has been developed recently by Cockburn and Shu for convection‐dominated convection‐diffusion equations. In this article, we consider versions of this method with interior penalties for the numerical solution of transport equations, and derive a priori error estimates. We consider two interior penalty methods, one that penalizes jumps in the solution across interelement boundaries, and another that also penalizes jumps in the diffusive flux across such boundaries. For the first penalty method, we demonstrate convergence of order k in the L(L2) norm when polynomials of minimal degree k are used, and for the second penalty method, we demonstrate convergence of order k+1/2. Through a parabolic lift argument, we show improved convergence of order k+1/2 (k+1) in the L2(L2) norm for the first penalty method with a penalty parameter of order one (h?1). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this article, we propose a combined hybrid discontinuous mixed finite element method for miscible displacement problem with local discontinuous Galerkin method. Here, to obtain more accurate approximation and deal with the discontinuous case, we use the hybrid mixed element method to approximate the pressure and velocity, and use the local discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the concentration. Compared with other combined methods, this method can improve the efficiency of computation, deal with the discontinuous problem well and keep local mass balance. We study the convergence of this method and give the corresponding optimal error estimates in L(L2) for velocity and concentration and the super convergence in L(H1) for pressure. Finally, we also present some numerical examples to confirm our theoretical analysis.  相似文献

We prove local and pointwise error estimates for the local discontinuous Galerkin method applied to the Stokes problem in two and three dimensions. By using techniques originally developed by A. Schatz [Math. Comp., 67 (1998), 877-899] to prove pointwise estimates for the Laplace equation, we prove optimal weighted pointwise estimates for both the velocity and the pressure for domains with smooth boundaries.

In this article, we analyze a residual‐based a posteriori error estimates of the spatial errors for the semidiscrete local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method applied to the one‐dimensional second‐order wave equation. These error estimates are computationally simple and are obtained by solving a local steady problem with no boundary condition on each element. We apply the optimal L2 error estimates and the superconvergence results of Part I of this work [Baccouch, Numer Methods Partial Differential Equations 30 (2014), 862–901] to prove that, for smooth solutions, these a posteriori LDG error estimates for the solution and its spatial derivative, at a fixed time, converge to the true spatial errors in the L2‐norm under mesh refinement. The order of convergence is proved to be , when p‐degree piecewise polynomials with are used. As a consequence, we prove that the LDG method combined with the a posteriori error estimation procedure yields both accurate error estimates and superconvergent solutions. Our computational results show higher convergence rate. We further prove that the global effectivity indices, for both the solution and its derivative, in the L2‐norm converge to unity at rate while numerically they exhibit and rates, respectively. Numerical experiments are shown to validate the theoretical results. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 31: 1461–1491, 2015  相似文献

We consider the hp-version interior penalty discontinuous Galerkinfinite-element method (hp-DGFEM) for second-order linear reaction–diffusionequations. To the best of our knowledge, the sharpest knownerror bounds for the hp-DGFEM are due to Rivière et al.(1999,Comput. Geosci., 3, 337–360) and Houston et al.(2002,SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 99, 2133–2163). These are optimalwith respect to the meshsize h but suboptimal with respect tothe polynomial degree p by half an order of p. We present improvederror bounds in the energy norm, by introducing a new functionspace framework. More specifically, assuming that the solutionsbelong element-wise to an augmented Sobolev space, we deducefully hp-optimal error bounds.  相似文献

In this article, we present local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for solving a model of energy exchanges in an N ‐carrier system with Neumann boundary conditions. This model extends the concept of the well‐known parabolic two‐step model for microheat transfer to the energy exchanges in a generalized N ‐carrier system with heat sources. The energy norm stability and error estimate of the LDG method is proved for solving N ‐carrier system. Some numerical examples are given. The numerical results when compared with the exact solution and other numerical results indicate that the present method is seen to be a very good alternative to some existing techniques for realistic problems. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, an implicit fully discrete local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) finite element method, on the basis of finite difference method in time and LDG method in space, is applied to solve the time‐fractional Kawahara equation, which is introduced by replacing the integer‐order time derivatives with fractional derivatives. We prove that our scheme is unconditional stable and convergent through analysis. Extensive numerical results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the present method. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2013  相似文献

In this article, we develop functional a posteriori error estimates for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) approximations of elliptic boundary‐value problems. These estimates are based on a certain projection of DG approximations to the respective energy space and functional a posteriori estimates for conforming approximations developed by S. Repin (see e.g., Math Comp 69 (2000) 481–500). On these grounds, we derive two‐sided guaranteed and computable bounds for the errors in “broken” energy norms. A series of numerical examples presented confirm the efficiency of the estimates. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2009  相似文献

A compact C0 discontinuous Galerkin (CCDG) method is developed for solving the Kirchhoff plate bending problems. Based on the CDG (LCDG) method for Kirchhoff plate bending problems, the CCDG method is obtained by canceling the term of global lifting operator and enhancing the term of local lifting operator. The resulted CCDG method possesses the compact stencil, that is only the degrees of freedom belonging to neighboring elements are connected. The advantages of CCDG method are: (1) CCDG method just requires C0 finite element spaces; (2) the stiffness matrix is sparser than CDG (LCDG) method; and (3) it does not contain any parameter which can not be quantified a priori compared to C0 interior penalty (IP) method. The optimal order error estimates in certain broken energy norm and H1‐norm for the CCDG method are derived under minimal regularity assumptions on the exact solution with the help of some local lower bound estimates of a posteriori error analysis. Some numerical results are included to verify the theoretical convergence orders. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 31: 1265–1287, 2015  相似文献

A Discontinuous Galerkin method with interior penalties is presented for nonlinear Sobolev equations. A semi‐discrete and a family of fully‐discrete time approximate schemes are formulated. These schemes are symmetric. Hp‐version error estimates are analyzed for these schemes. For the semi‐discrete time scheme a priori L(H1) error estimate is derived and similarly, l(H1) and l2(H1) for the fully‐discrete time schemes. These results indicate that spatial rates in H1 and time truncation errors in L2 are optimal. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2008  相似文献

We introduce and analyze the local discontinuous Galerkin method for the Oseen equations of incompressible fluid flow. For a class of shape-regular meshes with hanging nodes, we derive optimal a priori estimates for the errors in the velocity and the pressure in - and negative-order norms. Numerical experiments are presented which verify these theoretical results and show that the method performs well for a wide range of Reynolds numbers.

In this paper we analyze the coupling of local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) and boundary element methods as applied to linear exterior boundary value problems in the plane. As a model problem we consider a Poisson equation in an annular polygonal domain coupled with a Laplace equation in the surrounding unbounded exterior region. The technique resembles the usual coupling of finite elements and boundary elements, but the corresponding analysis becomes quite different. In particular, in order to deal with the weak continuity of the traces at the interface boundary, we need to define a mortar-type auxiliary unknown representing an interior approximation of the normal derivative. We prove the stability of the resulting discrete scheme with respect to a mesh-dependent norm and derive a Strang-type estimate for the associated error. Finally, we apply local and global approximation properties of the subspaces involved to obtain the a priori error estimate in the energy norm.

This work concerns with the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for the time‐dependent linear elasticity problem. We derive the a posteriori error bounds for semidiscrete and fully discrete problems, by making use of the stationary elasticity reconstruction technique which allows to estimate the error for time‐dependent problem through the error estimation of the associated stationary elasticity problem. For fully discrete scheme, we make use of the backward‐Euler scheme and an appropriate space‐time reconstruction. The technique here can be applicable for a variety of DG methods as well.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate a fully discrete local discontinuous Galerkin approximation of a non-linear non-Fickian diffusion model in viscoelastic polymers. For the spatial discretization, we adopt local discontinuous Galerkin finite element method and for the time discretization we use backward Euler method. We derive the stability estimate and a priori error estimate for the discrete scheme. Numerical examples are given to verify the theoretical findings.  相似文献

In this research, numerical approximation to fractional Bagley-Torvik equation as an important model arising in fluid mechanics is investigated. Our discretization algorithm is based on the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) schemes along with using the natural upwind fluxes, which enables us to solve the model problem element by element. This means that we require to solve a low-order system of equations in each subinterval, hence avoiding the need for a full global solution. The proposed schemes are tested on a range of initial- and boundary-value problems including a variable coefficient example, a nonsmooth problem, and some oscillatory test cases with exact solutions. Also, the validation of the proposed methods was compared with those obtained available existing computational procedures. Overall, it was found that LDG methods indicated highly satisfactory performance with comparatively lower degree of polynomials and number of elements compared with other numerical models.  相似文献

In this paper,we discuss the local discontinuous Galerkin methods coupled with two specific explicitimplicit-null time discretizations for solving one-dimensional nonlinear diffusion problems Ut=(a(U)Ux)x.The basic idea is to add and subtract two equal terms a0 Uxx the right-hand side of the partial differential equation, then to treat the term a0 Uxx implicitly and the other terms(a(U)Ux)x-a0 Uxx explicitly. We give stability analysis for the method on a simplified model by the aid of energy analysis, which gives a guidance for the choice of a0,i.e.,a0≥max{a(u)}/2 to ensure the unconditional stability of the first order and second order schemes. The optimal error estimate is also derived for the simplified model, and numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the stability, accuracy and performance of the schemes for nonlinear diffusion equations.  相似文献
