We use mesoscale simulations to study the depinning of a receding contact line on a superhydrophobic surface patterned by a regular array of posts. For the simulations to be feasible, we introduce a novel geometry where a column of liquid dewets a capillary bounded by a superhydrophobic plane that faces a smooth hydrophilic wall of variable contact angle. We present results for the dependence of the depinning angle on the shape and spacing of the posts and discuss the form of the meniscus at depinning. We find, in agreement with ref 17 , that the local post concentration is a primary factor in controlling the depinning angle and show that the numerical results agree well with recent experiments. We also present two examples of metastable pinned configurations where the posts are partially wet.  相似文献

Moving air-water interfaces can detach colloidal particles from stationary surfaces. The objective of this study was to quantify the effects of advancing and receding air-water interfaces on colloid detachment as a function of interface velocity. We deposited fluorescent, negatively charged, carboxylate-modified polystyrene colloids (diameter of 1 μm) into a cylindrical glass channel. The colloids were hydrophilic with an advancing air-water contact angle of 60° and a receding contact angle of 40°. After colloid deposition, two air bubbles were sequentially introduced into the glass channel and passed through the channel at different velocities (0.5, 7.7, 72, 982, and 10,800 cm/h). The passage of the bubbles represented a sequence of receding and advancing air-water interfaces. Colloids remaining in the glass channel after each interface passage were visualized with confocal microscopy and quantified by image analysis. The advancing air-water interface was significantly more effective in detaching colloids from the glass surface than the receding interface. Most of the colloids were detached during the first passage of the advancing air-water interface, while the subsequent interface passages did not remove significant amounts of colloids. Forces acting on the colloids calculated from theory corroborate our experimental results, and confirm that the detachment forces (surface tension forces) during the advancing air-water interface movement were stronger than during the receding movement. Theory indicates that, for hydrophilic colloids, the advancing interface movement generally exerts a stronger detachment force than the receding, except when the hysteresis of the colloid-air-water contact angle is small and that of the channel-air-water contact angle is large.  相似文献

The contact angle is a critical parameter in liquid interface dynamics ranging from liquid spreading on a solid surface on earth to liquid motion in partially filled containers in space. A refractive tilting-plate technique employing a scanning laser beam is developed to conduct an experimental study of a moving contact line, with the intention of making accurate measurements of the contact angle. The technique shows promise as an accurate and potentially fully automated means to determine the velocity dependence of the contact angle at the intersection of the interface between two transparent fluids with a transparent solid surface. Ray tracing calculations are included to reinforce the measurement concept. The principal experiments were conducted at speeds ranging from 0.05 to 1.00 mm/s, both advancing and receding, using an immiscible liquid pair (nonane/formamide) in contact with glass. The contact angle was found to depend for practical purposes only on the sign of the velocity and not on its magnitude for the range of velocities studied. Other observations revealed a bimodal behavior of the contact line that depends on which liquid first contacts the glass, with resulting drift in the dynamic contact angle with time.  相似文献

The wetting behavior of a liquid drop sitting on an inclined plane is investigated experimentally and theoretically. Using Surface Evolver, the numerical simulations are performed based on the liquid-induced defect model, in which only two thermodynamic parameters (solid-liquid interfacial tensions before and after wetting) are required. A drop with contact angle (CA) equal to θ is first placed on a horizontal plate, and then the plate is tilted. Two cases are studied: (i) θ is adjusted to the advancing CA (θ(a)) before tilting, and (ii) θ is adjusted to the receding CA (θ(r)) before tilting. In the first case, the uphill CA declines and the downhill CA remains unchanged upon inclination. When the tilted drop stays at rest, the pinning of the receding part of the contact line (receding pinning) and the depinning of the advancing part of the contact line (advancing depinning) are observed. The free energy analysis reveals that upon inclination, the reduction of the solid-liquid free energy dominates over the increment of the liquid-gas free energy associated with shape deformation. In the second case, the downhill CA grows and the uphill CA remains the same upon inclination. Advancing pinning and receding depinning are noted for the tilted drop at rest. The free energy analysis indicates that upon inclination, the decrease of the liquid-gas free energy compensates the increment of the solid-liquid free energy. The experimental results are in good agreement with those of simulations.  相似文献

We first fabricated the superhydrophobic film with a water contact angle of 178 degrees based on a perpendicular nanopin fractal structure by a bottom-up process. Until now, only materials with an original water contact angle larger than 90 degrees , which is classified as hydrophobicity, could be used to fabricate the superhydrophobic film (>170 degrees ) according to the possible fractal structure by a top-down process. Now, in this work, a water contact angle of about 178 degrees can be achieved using a lauric acid-coated film with an original contact angle of 75 degrees , which is classified as hydrophilicity, based on an ideal fractal structure for the superhydrophobic surface which is fabricated by the nanosize pin with 6.5 nm diameter.  相似文献

The creation of low hysteresis superhydrophobic paper is reported using a combination of oxygen plasma etching and plasma deposition of an 80 nm non-fluorinated, hydrophilic diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating. The DLC has an equilibrium (flat surface) contact angle (θ e ) of 68.2° ± 1.5°, which is well below the 90° contact angle that is typically believed to be a prerequisite for superhydrophobicity. Coating of paper substrates with the DLC film yields an advancing contact angle of 124.3° ± 4.1°, but the surface remains highly adhesive, with a receding contact angle <10°. After 60 min of plasma etching and DLC coating, a low hysteresis, superhydrophobic surface is formed with an advancing contact angle of 162.0° ± 6.3° and hysteresis of 8.7° ± 1.9°. To understand the increase in contact angle and decrease in hysteresis, atomic force microscopy and optical profilometry studies were performed. The data demonstrates that while little additional nanoscale roughness is imparted beyond the first 5 min of etching, the roughness at the microscale continually increases. The hierarchical structure provides the appropriate roughness to create low hysteresis superhydrophobic paper from a hydrophilic coating.  相似文献

Wetting force at three-phase line was measured by the Wilhelmy technique using fibrous solids/liquid/liquid systems. Advancing and receding contact angles were calculated from the wetting forces during fiber immersion and emersion. The obtained results showed that contact angle hysteresis was due to the heterogeneity of the fiber surfaces. The dispersive and polar components of surface free energies of the fibers were determined from the advancing and receding contact angles, respectively. The Hamaker constants of the fibers were estimated from the dispersive components of their surface free energies.  相似文献

Paper samples were rendered superhydrophobic with Alkyl Ketene Dimer using (1) Airblasting with cryo ground micro particles, (2) crystallizing from organic solvents and (3) spraying with Rapid Expansion of Supercritical Solutions (RESS) technique. The papers were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy, contact angle to water measurements and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Advancing contact angles were in the region of 150°–160° and receding contact angles were in the region of 110°–130°. Diagrams showing the drop base diameter vs. the contact angle when water is pumped into, and then withdrawn from, a sessile drop show that a stick slip pattern is present in the advancing phase for a non coated internally sized paper. Papers rendered superhydrophobic with the RESS technique showed a much less pronounced stick slip pattern in the advancing phase but still a stick slip pattern in the receding phase.  相似文献

Two types of experiments were used to study the behavior of both advancing and receding contact angles, namely the dynamic one-cycle contact angle (DOCA) and the dynamic cycling contact angle (DCCA) experiments. For the preliminary study, DOCA measurements of different liquids on different solids were performed using an automated axisymmetric drop shape analysis-profile (ADSA-P). From these experimental results, four patterns of receding contact angle were observed: (1) time-dependent receding contact angle; (2) constant receding contact angle; (3) 'stick/slip'; (4) no receding contact angle. For the purpose of illustration, results from four different solid surfaces are shown. These solids are: FC-732-coated surface; poly(methyl methacrylate/n-butyl methacrylate) [P(MMA/nBMA)]; poly(lactic acid) (DL-PLA); and poly(lactic/glycolic acid) 50/50 (DL-PLGA 50/50). Since most of the surfaces in our studies exhibit time dependence in the receding contact angle, a more extended study was conducted using only FC-732-coated surfaces to better understand the possible causes of decreasing receding contact angle and contact angle hysteresis. Contact angle measurements of 21 liquids from two homologous series (i.e. n-alkanes and 1-alcohols) and octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OCMTS) on FC-732-coated surfaces were performed. It is apparent that the contact angle hysteresis decreases with the chain length of the liquid. It was found that the receding contact angle equals the advancing angle when the alkane molecules are infinitely large. These results strongly suggest that the chain length and size of the liquid molecule could contribute to contact angle hysteresis phenomena. Furthermore, DCCA measurements of six liquids from the two homologous series on FC-732-coated surfaces were performed. With these experimental results, one can construe that the time dependence of contact angle hysteresis on relatively smooth and homogeneous surfaces is mainly caused by liquid retention/sorption. The results also suggested that the contact angle hysteresis will eventually approach a steady state, where the rate of liquid retention-evaporation or sorption process would balance out each other. If the existence of contact angle hysteresis can be attributed to liquid sorption/retention, one should only use the advancing contact angles (measured on a dry surface) in conjunction with Young's equation for surface energetic calculations.  相似文献

Contact angle hysteresis of a sessile drop on a substrate consists of continuous invasion of liquid phase with the advancing angle (θ(a)) and contact line pinning of liquid phase retreat until the receding angle (θ(r)) is reached. Receding pinning is generally attributed to localized defects that are more wettable than the rest of the surface. However, the defect model cannot explain advancing pinning of liquid phase invasion driven by a deflating bubble and continuous retreat of liquid phase driven by the inflating bubble. A simple thermodynamic model based on adhesion hysteresis is proposed to explain anomalous contact angle hysteresis of a captive bubble quantitatively. The adhesion model involves two solid–liquid interfacial tensions (γ(sl) > γ(sl)′). Young’s equation with γ(sl) gives the advancing angle θ(a) while that with γ(sl)′ due to surface rearrangement yields the receding angle θ(r). Our analytical analysis indicates that contact line pinning represents frustration in surface free energy, and the equilibrium shape corresponds to a nondifferential minimum instead of a local minimum. On the basis of our thermodynamic model, Surface Evolver simulations are performed to reproduce both advancing and receding behavior associated with a captive bubble on the acrylic glass.  相似文献

A series of pillar-like patterned silicon wafers with different pillar sizes and spacing are fabricated by photolithography and further modified by a self-assembled fluorosilanated monolayer. The dynamic contact angles of water on these surfaces are carefully measured and found to be consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Cassie model and the Wenzel model. When a water drop is at the Wenzel state, its contact angle hysteresis increases along with an increase in the surface roughness. While the surface roughness is further raised beyond its transition roughness (from the Wenzel state to the Cassie state), the contact angle hysteresis (or receding contact angle) discontinuously drops (or jumps) to a lower (or higher) value. When a water drop is at the Cassie state, its contact angle hysteresis strongly depends on the solid fraction and has nothing to do with the surface roughness. Even for a superhydrophobic surface, the contact angle hysteresis may still exhibit a value as high as 41 degrees for the solid fraction of 0.563.  相似文献

A liquid droplet sitting on a hydrophobic surface with a cosine wave-like square-array pattern in the Wenzel state is simulated by using the Surface Evolver to determine the contact angle. For a fixed drop volume, multiple metastable states are obtained at two different surface roughnesses. Unusual and non-circular shape of the three-phase contact line of a liquid droplet sitting on the model surface is observed due to corrugation and distortion of the contact line by structure of the roughness. The contact angle varies along the contact line for each metastable state. The maximum and minimum contact angles among the multiple metastable states at a fixed viewing angle correspond to the advancing and the receding contact angles, respectively. It is interesting to observe that the advancing/receding contact angles (and contact angle hysteresis) are a function of viewing angle. In addition, the receding (or advancing) contact angles at different viewing angles are determined at different metastable states. The contact angle of minimum energy among the multiple metastable states is defined as the most stable (equilibrium) contact angle. The Wenzel model is not able to describe the contact angle along the three-phase contact line. The contact angle hysteresis at different drop volumes is determined. The number of the metastable states increases with increasing drop volume. Drop volume effect on the contact angles is also discussed.  相似文献

Using the literature data of the advancing and receding contact angles for water, diiodomethane and hexadecane measured on various hydrophobic silyl layers (mostly monolayers) produced on silicon wafers the apparent surface free energies gamma(s)(tot) were calculated by applying new model of the contact angle hysteresis interpretation. It was found that, for the same silyl layer, the calculated gamma(s)(tot) values to some degree depended on the probe liquid used. Therefore, thus calculated the surface free energies should be considered as apparent ones. Moreover, also the values of the dispersion component gamma(s)(d) of these layers depend on the probe liquid used, but to a less degree. This must be due to the strength of the force field originating from the probe liquid and the spacing between the interacting molecules. The relationships between gamma(s)(tot) and gamma(s)(d) are discussed on the basis of the equations derived. It may be postulated that applying proposed model of the contact angle hysteresis and calculating the apparent total surface free energies and the dispersion contributions better insight into wetting properties of the silyled silicon surface can be achieved.  相似文献

The fabrication and properties of superhydrophobic surfaces that exhibit ratchet-like anisotropic slip angle behavior is described. The surface is composed of arrays of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) posts fabricated by a type of 3D printing. By controlling the dispense parameters, regular arrays of asymmetric posts were deposited such that the slope of the posts was varied from 0 to 50 relative to the surface normal. Advancing and receding contact angles as well as slip angles were measured as a function of the post slope and droplet volume. Ratchetlike slip angle anisotropy was observed on surfaces composed of sloped features. The maximum slip angle difference (for a 180° tilt angle variation) was 32° for 20 μL droplets on surfaces with posts fabricated with a slope of 50°. This slip angle anisotropy is attributed to an increase in the triple contact line (TCL) length as the droplet is tilted in a direction against the post slope whereas the TCL decreases continuously when the drop travels in a direction parallel to the post slope. The increasing length of the TCL creates an increased energy barrier that accounts for the higher slip angles in this direction.  相似文献

We investigate contact angle hysteresis on chemically patterned and superhydrophobic surfaces, as the drop volume is quasistatically increased and decreased. We consider both two (cylindrical drops) and three (spherical drops) dimensions using analytical and numerical approaches to minimize the free energy of the drop. In two dimensions, we find, in agreement with other authors, a slip, jump, stick motion of the contact line. In three dimensions, this behavior persists, but the position and magnitude of the contact line jumps are sensitive to the details of the surface patterning. In two dimensions, we identify analytically the advancing and receding contact angles on the different surfaces, and we use numerical insights to argue that these provide bounds for the three-dimensional cases. We present explicit simulations to show that a simple average over the disorder is not sufficient to predict the details of the contact angle hysteresis and to support an explanation for the low contact angle hysteresis of suspended drops on superhydrophobic surfaces.  相似文献

Comments are made concerning the recent use of adjectives to describe solid surfaces that exhibit anomalously high water contact angle values. We suggest that the meaning of the word hydrophobic be resolved before it is modified, for example, to superhydrophobic and further modified, for example, to sticky superhydrophobic and before the definitions of these new words become issues of contention. The case is made that the first statement in the title is appropriate with experiments that demonstrate significant attractive interaction between liquid water and the surface of solid Teflon. Four types of experiments are described: the interaction of a silicon-supported covalently attached perfluoroalkyl monolayer (a model Teflon surface) with a sessile water drop (1) and with a thin film of water on a clean silicon wafer surface (2), the interaction of 1 and 12 microm diameter solid Teflon particles with a water droplet surface (3), and the interaction of a thin (<5 microm) Teflon film with a water droplet (4). The concepts of shear and tensile hydrophobicity are introduced, and the recommendation that two numbers, advancing and receding contact angle values, should be considered necessary data to characterize the wettability of a surface. That the words hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and their derivatives can and should only be considered qualitative or relative terms is emphasized.  相似文献

Bioinspired synthesis of superhydrophobic coatings   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A superhydrophobic material prepared by precipitating calcium phosphate on TiO2 films under in vitro conditions is described. Crystalline calcium phosphate is very porous with octacalcium phosphate as the main phase. The films are made hydrophobic by the surface grafting of a perfluorophosphate surfactant (Zonyl FSE). The as-prepared coatings were strongly hydrophobic, with advancing contact angles exceeding 165 degrees and receding angles exceeding 150 degrees . The formation of the calcium phosphate layer is self-organizing, and the coating is easily functionalized. The material was characterized with dynamic contact angle measurements, SEM, XRD, and XPS. The strong water repellency is explained by the open porous morphology of the calcium phosphate coating together with the successful attachment of the hydrophobic function.  相似文献

A new, atomic force microscopy (AFM) based experimental setup for the continuous acquisition of friction force data as a function of humidity has been developed. The current model of interactions between wet contacts under the influence of capillary effects, has been amended to include a vertical component due to the disjoining pressure and takes into account the influence of liquid films adsorbed on the surface. This is a 'switching' model, i.e. the contact between nanometer-sized sphere and a flat surface can exist in two distinct states due to capillary bridge formation/destruction as the humidity is varied. The model has been qualitatively verified on samples of differing wettability produced by UV-ozone treatment of polystyrene (PS). Results of AFM analysis of the friction vs. vapor pressure curves collected from the surface are presented. Correlation between important surface properties such as wettability, adsorption, and contact angle and friction force under varying humidity were found and discussed.  相似文献

A simple, environmentally benign and energy efficient process for fabricating single faced superhydrophilic/hydrophobic cotton fabrics by controlling surface texture and chemistry at the nano/microscale is reported here. Stable ultra-hydrophobic surfaces with advancing and receding water droplet contact angles in excess of 146° as well as extreme superhydrophilic surfaces are obtained. Hydrophobic water-repellent cotton fabrics were obtained following plasma treatment through diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating by plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition. The influence of changing different precursor’s plasma pre-treatments such as H2, Ar or O2 on the properties of DLC coatings is also evaluated using atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and analysed in terms of contact angle measurements. Because of the DLC coating, the coated fabric showed to endure its superhydrophobic character even after 12 months.  相似文献
