Fast evaporation of spreading droplets of colloidal suspensions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
When a coffee droplet dries on a countertop, a dark ring of coffee solute is left behind, a phenomenon often referred to as the coffee-ring effect. A closely related yet less-well-explored phenomenon is the formation of a layer of particles, or skin, at the surface of the droplet during drying. In this work, we explore the behavior of a mathematical model that can qualitatively describe both phenomena. We consider a thin axisymmetric droplet of a colloidal suspension on a horizontal substrate undergoing spreading and evaporation. In contrast to prior work, precursor films (rather than pinned contact lines) are present at the droplet edge, and evaporation is assumed to be limited by how quickly molecules can transfer out of the liquid phase (rather than by how quickly they can diffuse through the gas phase). The lubrication approximation is applied to simplify the mass and momentum conservation equations, and the colloidal particles are allowed to influence the droplet rheology through their effect on the viscosity. By describing the transport of the colloidal particles with the full convection-diffusion equation, we are able to capture depthwise gradients in particle concentration and thus describe skin formation, a feature neglected in prior models of droplet evaporation. The highly coupled model equations are solved for a range of problem parameters using a finite-difference scheme based on a moving overset grid. The presence of evaporation and a large particle Peclet number leads to the accumulation of particles at the liquid-air interface. Whereas capillarity creates a flow that drives particles to the droplet edge to produce a coffee ring, Marangoni flows can compete with this and promote skin formation. Increases in viscosity due to particle concentration slow down droplet dynamics and can lead to a reduction in the spreading rate.  相似文献

A condition for the maximum thermodynamic efficiency of distillation of dilute solutions in a multistep cascade was obtained from the condition of a maximum change in the entropy of a mixture. These conditions were shown to correspond to a maximum degree of separation of mixture components. A thermodynamic equation was derived to describe the relation between a decrease in the Gibbs energy and the mixture value increment during distillation of a dilute ideal solution.  相似文献

Nonlinear unmixing of hyperspectral reflectance data is one of the key problems in quantitative imaging of painted works of art. The approach presented is to interrogate a hyperspectral image cube by first decomposing it into a set of reflectance curves representing pure basis pigments and second to estimate the scattering and absorption coefficients of each pigment in a given pixel to produce estimates of the component fractions. This two‐step algorithm uses a deep neural network to qualitatively identify the constituent pigments in any unknown spectrum and, based on the pigment(s) present and Kubelka–Munk theory to estimate the pigment concentration on a per‐pixel basis. Using hyperspectral data acquired on a set of mock‐up paintings and a well‐characterized illuminated folio from the 15th century, the performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated for pigment recognition and quantitative estimation of concentration.  相似文献

PVC was used as a model substance to study the dependence of thermal measurement data on the preparation and morphological characteristics of samples The PVC treated was a commercially available suspension polymer, Ongrovil S 155, produced by the Borsodi Vegyi Kombinát. The whole thermal process was followed by TG and DTG measurements in air and argon atmospheres by means of a Du Pont 990 Thermoanalyzer. Evolved-gas analysis was performed with a home-made apparatus. Pyrolysis gas chromatography was accomplished using a Hamilton type pyrolyzer and a Carlo Erba Chromatograph furnished with a flame ionization detector. The investigations showed benzene and other components to be evolved from the initial polymer and an alteration depending on the morphological characteristics of the samples. This was suggested to be due to the different mechanisms of thermal degradation of the PVC.  相似文献

The pH-dependence of the ability of coproporphyrin (CP) and uroporphyrin (UP) to photogenerate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in aqueous solution was investigated, with special attention to the structure-activity relationship related to the aggregation of the porphyrins. It was found that the efficiency was strongly dependent on the aggregation of CP and UP mediated by changes in the pH of the solution, and a dimeric form had a weak ability to produce H2O2, while a highly aggregated form had a good ability. The increased efficiency of the highly aggregated porphyrin to produce H2O2 was further demonstrated using a different type of aggregate formed by the electrostatic interaction of cationic tetrakis-5,10,15,20-(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphin (TMPyP) with anionic tetrakis-5,10,15,20-(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphin (TSPP). The present results demonstrated the importance of the state of aggregation of porphyrin to photogenerate H2O2, and the results may help to develop a new type of medicine for photodynamic therapy.  相似文献

Understanding the stability of the native state and the dynamics of a protein is of great importance for all areas of biomolecular design. The efficient estimation of the influence of individual contacts between amino acids in a protein structure is a first step in the reengineering of a particular protein for technological or pharmacological purposes. At the same time, the functional annotation of molecular evolution can be facilitated by such insight. Here, we use a recently suggested, information theoretical measure in biomolecular design - the Kullback-Leibler-divergence - to quantify and therefore rank residue-residue contacts within proteins according to their overall contribution to the molecular mechanics. We implement this protocol on the basis of a reduced molecular model, which allows us to use a well-known lemma of linear algebra to speed up the computation. The increase in computational performance is around 10(1)- to 10(4)-fold. We applied the method to two proteins to illustrate the protocol and its results. We found that our method can reliably identify key residues in the molecular mechanics and the protein fold in comparison to well-known properties in the serine protease inhibitor. We found significant correlations to experimental results, e.g., dissociation constants and Φ values.  相似文献

The influence of freezing of a reaction mass on the properties of the resulting covalently cross-linked gels is exemplified by a system composed of a solution of chitosan in aqueous acetic acid and glutaric dialdehyde serving as a cross-linking agent. The freezing is shown to lead to a noticeable decrease of critical concentration of gelation as compared with the reactions of polymeric chain cross-linking in ordinary conditions. Novel nonafluorenes with a varying extent of pendant chirality were synthesized for an investigation of the origins of chiroptical activities in neat films. Thermal annealing of 4-microm-thick sandwiched films and of 90-nm-thick spin-cast films, all on surface-treated substrates, produced monodomain glassy films characterized as a right-handed cholesteric stack with a helical pitch length ranging from 180 to 534 nm and from 252 to 1151 nm, respectively. The observed strong circular dichroism (CD) and g(e) as functions of helical pitch length in single-substrate monodomain glassy cholesteric films were quantitatively interpreted with a circularly polarized fluorescence theory accounting for light absorption, emission, and propagation in a cholesteric stack. Although intertwined molecular helices were likely to be present, cholesteric stacking of rodlike molecules seemed to be the predominant contributor to the strong chiroptical activities. All the cholesteric stacks comprising a polydomain glassy film on an untreated substrate were found to contribute to CD and g(e) largely to the same extent as in a monodomain film. A circularly polarized blue organic light-emitting diode containing a nonafluorene film resulted in a g(e) of 0.35 with a luminance yield of 0.94 cd/A at 20 mA/cm(2), the best performance to date.  相似文献

Dependences of the rate of copper deposition on mono- and multielectrodes out of dilute solutions of acetic acid at voltages of 20–250 V are compared. It is established that the same rate of deposition in the case of a multielectrode (25 electrodes with a diameter of 0.1 mm) takes place at a voltage that is lower by 2.7 times than that in the case of a monoelectrode with a diameter of 0.5 mm and the same area. The same results are obtained during electrodeposition of cadmium and thallium. In order to explain this effect, a two-layered model of potential distribution is suggested. In accordance with this model, the resistance of electrolyte in the vicinity of a multielectrode is equal to the sum of the resistance of the layer nearest to the electrode (where it is determined by the sum of conductances to each microelectrode) and the external layer, where the potential distribution is close to hemispherical. It is shown that calculations in accordance with this model allow one to give an estimate of the effect's scale that agrees with experiment and to predict its possible limits following an increase in the number of electrodes that make up a multielectrode.  相似文献

We determine the nucleation ability of argon clusters from Monte Carlo simulations. The nucleation rate appears to be defined by a sole characteristic of the clusters, namely, the stability. The stability is calculated as the ratio of grand canonical growth and decay rates and can be assigned to individual cluster configurations. We study the connection between the stability of the cluster configurations and their volume and total potential energy. Neither the potential energy nor the volume of a cluster configuration has a clear relation to its stability, and thus to the nucleation ability. On the other hand, we show that it is possible to use a specific volume for each cluster size to calculate the work of the cluster formation. These clusters with a unique volume have the same average stability as the full set of clusters. Our simulation method allows us to study the effect of possible deviations from equilibrium in the cluster configuration distributions. We argue that the nucleation process itself can produce a source for such a deviation. We show that even a small deviation from equilibrium in the cluster configuration distribution can lead to a dramatic deceleration of the nucleation rate. Although our simulations may overestimate the magnitude of the effect, they give qualitative estimates for its importance.  相似文献

Target-based virtual screening is increasingly used to generate leads for targets for which high quality three-dimensional (3D) structures are available. To allow large molecular databases to be screened rapidly, a tiered scoring scheme is often employed whereby a simple scoring function is used as a fast filter of the entire database and a more rigorous and time-consuming scoring function is used to rescore the top hits to produce the final list of ranked compounds. Molecular mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann surface area (MM-PBSA) approaches are currently thought to be quite effective at incorporating implicit solvation into the estimation of ligand binding free energies. In this paper, the ability of a high-throughput MM-PBSA rescoring function to discriminate between correct and incorrect docking poses is investigated in detail. Various initial scoring functions are used to generate docked poses for a subset of the CCDC/Astex test set and to dock one set of actives/inactives from the DUD data set. The effectiveness of each of these initial scoring functions is discussed. Overall, the ability of the MM-PBSA rescoring function to (i) regenerate the set of X-ray complexes when docking the bound conformation of the ligand, (ii) regenerate the X-ray complexes when docking conformationally expanded databases for each ligand which include "conformation decoys" of the ligand, and (iii) enrich known actives in a virtual screen for the mineralocorticoid receptor in the presence of "ligand decoys" is assessed. While a pharmacophore-based molecular docking approach, PhDock, is used to carry out the docking, the results are expected to be general to use with any docking method.  相似文献

The synthesis of bis-furonaphthopyrans 12a and 12b, regioisomeric analogues of the dimeric pyranonaphthoquinone antibiotic crisamicin A 1 is described. The key intermediate 16 was prepared via a one-pot in situ Suzuki-Miyaura homocoupling of naphthyl triflate 23 using bis(pinacolato)diboron. Oxidation of binaphthyl 16 to bis-naphthoquinone 14 was then effected with silver(II) oxide and nitric acid. Efficient double furofuran annulation of bis-naphthoquinone 14 with 2-trimethylsilyloxyfuran 8 afforded bis-furonaphthofuran adducts 13a and 13b as an inseparable 1:1 mixture of diastereomers. Oxidative rearrangement of this mixture of bis-furonaphthofuran adducts 13a and 13b using silver(II) oxide and nitric acid afforded unstable bis-furonaphthopyrans 12a and 12b also as a 1:1 mixture of diastereomers. Addition of 2-trimethylsilyloxyfuran 8 to naphthoquinone 25 afforded adduct 26 that underwent oxidative rearrangement to furonaphthopyran 27, however attempts to effect Suzuki-Miyaura homocoupling of triflates 26 and 27 to their respective dimers 13 and 12, was unsuccessful.  相似文献

The amount of heat that is required to gasify unit mass of material is one of the key properties that define its ignition resistance and fire response. Knowledge of this property is necessary to assess a material's fire hazard in a particular fire scenario. Nevertheless, even for the most common polymers the values of this property are not well established. Here we present a method for determining the heat of gasification using differential scanning calorimetry and apply this method to a set of ten common plastics and engineering polymers.  相似文献

The separation of a complex mixture of inorganic and organic anions by ion chromatography–capillary electrophoresis using a cationic polymer added to the background electrolyte and indirect UV detection has been studied. The addition of unmodified polymer to an electrolyte suitable for indirect detection resulted in the appearance of a system peak due to the counter-anion on the polymer and while the position of the analytes relative to this system peak could be changed, this was found to be an unacceptable approach for mixtures of large numbers of analytes. Although conversion of the polymer to replace the counter-ion with the indirect UV detection probe ion simplified the system, this approach restricted the flexibility of the system because the probe and polymer concentration were necessarily linked. This limitation could be overcome by selecting the appropriate type of probe ion, with probes having a low ion-exchange selectivity coefficient providing greater retention of analytes than probes with a high ion-exchange selectivity coefficient. Three electrolyte systems with different probes (benzoate, chromate and phthalate) were modelled using a previously derived migration equation and this was used to optimise the electrolyte composition to enable the separation of a mixture of 24 inorganic and organic anions within 7 min. The electrolyte composition was then optimised for the analysis of anions in Bayer liquor with the final separation selectivity being substantially improved for selected key analytes.  相似文献

The preservation of morphology (pseudomorphism) and crystal structure during the transformation of one solid phase to another is regularly used as a criterion for a solid-state mechanism, even when there is a fluid phase present. However, a coupled dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism also preserves the morphology and transfers crystallographic information from parent to product by epitaxial nucleation. The generation of porosity in the product phase is a necessary condition for such a mechanism as it allows fluid to maintain contact with a reaction interface which moves through the parent phase from the original surface. We propose that interface-coupled dissolution-reprecipitation is a general mechanism for reequilibration of solids in the presence of a fluid phase.  相似文献

Once a homogeneous ensemble of a protein ligand is taken from solution and immobilized to a surface, for many reasons the resulting ensemble of surface binding sites to soluble analytes may be heterogeneous. For example, this can be due to the intrinsic surface roughness causing variations in the local microenvironment, nonuniform density distribution of polymeric linkers, or nonuniform chemical attachment producing different protein orientations and conformations. We previously described a computational method for determining the distribution of affinity and rate constants of surface sites from analysis of experimental surface binding data. It fully exploits the high signal/noise ratio and reproducibility provided by optical biosensor technology, such as surface plasmon resonance. Since the computational analysis is ill conditioned, the previous approach used a regularization strategy assuming a priori all binding parameters to be equally likely, resulting in the broadest possible parameter distribution consistent with the experimental data. We now extended this method in a Bayesian approach to incorporate the opposite assumption, i.e., that the surface sites a priori are expected to be uniform (as one would expect in free solution). This results in a distribution of binding parameters as close to monodispersity as possible given the experimental data. Using several model protein systems immobilized on a carboxymethyl dextran surface and probed with surface plasmon resonance, we show microheterogeneity of the surface sites in addition to broad populations of significantly altered affinity. The distributions obtained are highly reproducible. Immobilization conditions and the total surface density of immobilized sites can have a substantial impact on the functional distribution of the binding sites.  相似文献
