Two experiments investigated the influence of resolvability on the perceptual organization of sequential harmonic complexes differing in fundamental frequency (F0). Using a constant-stimuli method, streaming scores for ABA-... sequences of harmonic complexes were measured as a function of the F0 difference between the A and B tones. In the first experiment, streaming scores were measured for harmonic complexes having two different nominal F0s (88 and 250 Hz) and filtered in three frequency regions (a LOW, a MID, and a HIGH region with corner frequencies of 125-625 Hz, 1375-1875 Hz, and 3900-5400 Hz, respectively). Some streaming was observed in the HIGH region (in which the harmonics were always unresolved) but streaming scores remained generally lower than in the LOW and MID regions. The second experiment verified that the streaming observed in the HIGH region was not due to the use of distortion products. Overall, the results indicated that although streaming can occur in the absence of spectral cues, the degree of resolvability of the harmonics has a significant influence.  相似文献

Vowels are characterized by peaks in their spectral envelopes: the formants. To gain insight into the perception of speech as well as into the basic abilities of the ear, sensitivity to modulations in the positions of these formants is investigated. Frequency modulation detection thresholds (FMTs) were measured for the center frequency of formantlike harmonic complexes in the absence and in the presence of simultaneous off-frequency formants (maskers). Both the signals and the maskers were harmonic complexes which were band-pass filtered with a triangular spectral envelope, on a log-log scale, into either a LOW (near 500 Hz), a MID (near 1500 Hz), or a HIGH region (near 3000 Hz). They had a duration of 250 ms, and either an 80- or a 240-Hz fundamental. The modulation rate was 5 Hz for the signals and 10 Hz for the maskers. A pink noise background was presented continuously. In a first experiment no maskers were used. The measured FMTs were roughly two times larger than previously reported just-noticeable differences for formant frequency. In a second experiment, no significant differences were found between the FMTs in the absence of maskers and those in the presence of stationary (i.e., nonfrequency modulated) maskers. However, under many conditions the FMTs were increased by the presence of simultaneous modulated maskers. These results indicate that frequency modulation detection interference (FMDI) can exist for formantlike complex tones. The FMDI data could be divided into two groups. For stimuli characterized by a steep (200-dB/oct) slope, it was found that the size of the FMDI depended on which cues were used for detecting the signal and masker modulations. For stimuli with shallow (50-dB/oct) slopes, the FMDI was reduced when the signal and the masker had widely differing fundamentals, implying that the fundamental information is extracted before the interference occurs.  相似文献

A series of experiments measured the discrimination by human listeners of frequency-modulated complex tones which differed only in the coherence of frequency modulation (FM). For the coherently modulated tones all components were modulated by the same 5-Hz sinusoid, and by the same percentage of their starting frequencies, whereas for the incoherently modulated tones the modulation of one (target) component differed from that of the rest. When the 400-ms complex was composed of consecutive harmonics of a common fundamental, performance improved monotonically with increases in modulator delay, and was nearly perfect at the longest delays. When the complex was inharmonic, performance was near chance at all modular delays, both for component frequencies between 1500 and 2500 Hz, and for component frequencies between 400 and 800 Hz. It is argued that listeners detected incoherence in harmonic complexes by detecting the resulting mistuning of the target component. This conclusion was supported by the finding that listeners were usually at least as good at detecting a fixed mistuning of the center component of a harmonic complex as they were at detecting a modulator phase delay imposed on it. A final experiment, with a stimulus duration of 1 s and slower modulation rates, showed that listeners could detect incoherence for some inharmonic complexes. However, detection was worse than for harmonic complexes and was, it is argued, based on weak harmonicity cues. The results of all experiments point to the absence of an across-frequency mechanism specific to the detection of FM incoherence.  相似文献

The four experiments reported here measure listeners' accuracy and consistency in adjusting a formant frequency of one- or two-formant complex sounds to match the timbre of a target sound. By presenting the target and the adjustable sound on different fundamental frequencies, listeners are prevented from performing the task by comparing the absolute or relative levels of resolved spectral components. Experiment 1 uses two-formant vowellike sounds. When the two sounds have the same F0, the variability of matches (within-subject standard deviation) for either the first or the second formant is around 1%-3%, which is comparable to existing data on formant frequency discrimination thresholds. With a difference in F0, variability increases to around 8% for first-formant matches, but to only about 4% for second-formant matches. Experiment 2 uses sounds with a single formant at 1100 or 1200 Hz with both sounds on either low or high fundamental frequencies. The increase in variability produced by a difference in F0 is greater for high F0's (where the harmonics close to the formant peak are resolved) than it is for low F0's (where they are unresolved). Listeners also showed systematic errors in their mean matches to sounds with different high F0's. The direction of the systematic errors was towards the most intense harmonic. Experiments 3 and 4 showed that introduction of a vibratolike frequency modulation (FM) on F0 reduces the variability of matches, but does not reduce the systematic error. The experiments demonstrate, for the specific frequencies and FM used, that there is a perceptual cost to interpolating a spectral envelope across resolved harmonics.  相似文献

This article is concerned with the detection of mixed modulation (MM), i.e., simultaneously occurring amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM). In experiment 1, an adaptive two-alternative forced-choice task was used to determine thresholds for detecting AM alone. Then, thresholds for detecting FM were determined for stimuli which had a fixed amount of AM in the signal interval only. The amount of AM was always less than the threshold for detecting AM alone. The FM thresholds depended significantly on the magnitude of the coexisting AM. For low modulation rates (4, 16, and 64 Hz), the FM thresholds did not depend significantly on the relative phase of modulation for the FM and AM. For a high modulation rate (256 Hz) strong effects of modulator phase were observed. These phase effects are as predicted by the model proposed by Hartmann and Hnath [Acustica 50, 297-312 (1982)], which assumes that detection of modulation at modulation frequencies higher than the critical modulation frequency is based on detection of the lower sideband in the modulated signal's spectrum. In the second experiment, psychometric functions were measured for the detection of AM alone and FM alone, using modulation rates of 4 and 16 Hz. Results showed that, for each type of modulation, d' is approximately a linear function of the square of the modulation index. Application of this finding to the results of experiment 1 suggested that, at low modulation rates, FM and AM are not detected by completely independent mechanisms. In the third experiment, psychometric functions were again measured for the detection of AM alone and FM alone, using a 10-Hz modulation rate. Detectability was then measured for combined AM and FM, with modulation depths selected so that each type of modulation would be equally detectable if presented alone. Significant effects of relative modulator phase were found when detectability was relatively high. These effects were not correctly predicted by either a single-band excitation-pattern model or a multiple-band excitation-pattern model. However, the detectability of the combined AM and FM was better than would be predicted if the two types of modulation were coded completely independently.  相似文献

Carlyon and Shackleton [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 95, 3541-3554 (1994)] suggested that fundamental-frequency (F0) discrimination performance between resolved and unresolved harmonics is limited by an internal "translation" noise between the outputs of two distinct F0 encoding mechanisms, in addition to the encoding noise associated with each mechanism. To test this hypothesis further, F0 difference limens (DLF0s) were measured in six normal-hearing listeners using sequentially presented groups of harmonics. The two groups of harmonics presented on each trial were bandpass filtered into the same or different spectral regions, in such a way that both groups contained mainly resolved harmonics, both groups contained only unresolved harmonics, or one group contained mainly resolved and the other only unresolved harmonics. Three spectral regions (low: 600-1150 Hz, mid: 1400-2500 Hz, or high: 3000-5250 Hz) and two nominal F0s (100 and 200 Hz) were used. The DLF0s measured in across-region conditions were well accounted for by a model assuming only two sources of internal noise: the encoding noise estimated on the basis of the within-region results plus a constant noise associated with F0 comparisons across different spectral regions, independent of resolvability. No evidence for an across-pitch-mechanism translation noise was found. A reexamination of previous evidence for the existence of such noise suggests that the present negative outcome is unlikely to be explained by insufficient measurement sensitivity or an unusually large across-region comparison noise in the present study. While the results do not rule out the possibility of two separate pitch mechanisms, they indicate that the F0s of sequentially presented resolved and unresolved harmonics can be compared internally at no or negligible extra cost.  相似文献

Thresholds were measured for the detection of inharmonicity in complex tones. Subjects were required to distinguish a complex tone whose partials were all at exact harmonic frequencies from a similar complex tone with one of the partials slightly mistuned. The mistuning which allowed 71% correct identification in a two-alternative forced-choice task was estimated for each partial in turn. In experiment I the fundamental frequency was either 100, 200, or 400 Hz, and the complex tones contained the first 12 harmonics at equal levels of 60 dB SPL per component. The stimulus duration was 410 ms. For each fundamental the thresholds were roughly constant when expressed in Hz, having a mean value of about 4 Hz (range 2.4-7.3 Hz). In experiment II the fundamental frequency was fixed at 200 Hz, and thresholds for inharmonicity were measured for stimulus durations of 50, 110, 410, and 1610 ms. For harmonics above the fifth the thresholds increased from less than 1 Hz to about 40 Hz as duration was decreased from 1610-50 ms. For the lower harmonics (up to the fourth) threshold changed much less with duration, and for the three shorter durations thresholds for each duration were roughly a constant proportion of the harmonic frequency. The results suggest that inharmonicity is detected in different ways for high and low harmonics. For low harmonics the inharmonic partial appears to "stand out" from the complex tone as a whole. For high harmonics the mistuning is detected as a kind of "beat" or "roughness," presumably reflecting a sensitivity to the changing relative phase of the mistuned harmonic relative to the other harmonics.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A series of four experiments was undertaken to ascertain whether signal threshold in frequency-modulated noise bands is dependent upon the coherence of modulation. The specific goal was to determine whether a masking release could be obtained with frequency modulation (FM), analogous to the comodulation masking release (CMR) phenomenon observed with amplitude modulation (AM). It was hypothesized that an across-frequency grouping process might give rise to such an effect. In experiments 1-3, maskers were composed of three noise bands centered on 1600, 2000, and 2400 Hz; these were either comodulated or noncomodulated with respect to both FM and AM. In experiment 1, the modulation was sinusoidal, and the signal was a 2000-Hz pure tone; in experiment 2, the modulation was random, and the signal was an FM noise band centered on 2000 Hz. The results obtained showed that, given sufficient width of modulation, thresholds were lower in a coherent FM masker than in an incoherent FM masker, regardless of the pattern of AM or signal type. However, thresholds in multiband maskers were usually elevated relative to that in a single-band masker centered on the signal. Experiment 3 demonstrated that coherent FM could be discriminated from incoherent FM. Experiment 4 gave similar patterns of results to the respective conditions of experiments 2 and 3, but for an inharmonic masker with bands centered on 1580, 2000, and 2532 Hz. While within-channel processes could not be entirely excluded from contributing to the present results, the experimental conditions were designed to be minimally conducive to such processes.  相似文献

Carlyon and Shackleton [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 95, 3541-3554 (1994)] presented an influential study supporting the existence of two pitch mechanisms, one for complex tones containing resolved and one for complex tones containing only unresolved components. The current experiments provide an alternative explanation for their finding, namely the existence of across-frequency interference in fundamental frequency (F0) discrimination. Sensitivity (d') was measured for F0 discrimination between two sequentially presented 400 ms complex (target) tones containing only unresolved components. In experiment 1, the target was filtered between 1375 and 15,000 Hz, had a nominal F0 of 88 Hz, and was presented either alone or with an additional complex tone ("interferer"). The interferer was filtered between 125-625 Hz, and its F0 varied between 88 and 114.4 Hz across blocks. Sensitivity was significantly reduced in the presence of the interferer, and this effect decreased as its F0 was moved progressively further from that of the target. Experiment 2 showed that increasing the level of a synchronously gated lowpass noise that spectrally overlapped with the interferer reduced this "pitch discrimination interference (PDI)". In experiment 3A, the target was filtered between 3900 and 5400 Hz and had an F0 of either 88 or 250 Hz. It was presented either alone or with an interferer, filtered between 1375 and 1875 Hz with an F0 corresponding to the nominal target F0. PDI was larger in the presence of the resolved (250 Hz F0) than in the presence of the unresolved (88 Hz F0) interferer, presumably because the pitch of the former was more salient than that of the latter. Experiments 4A and 4B showed that PDI was reduced but not eliminated when the interferer was gated on 200 ms before and off 200 ms after the target, and that some PDI was observed with a continuous interferer. The current findings provide an alternative interpretation of a study supposedly providing strong evidence for the existence of two pitch mechanisms.  相似文献

To better represent fine structure cues in cochlear implants (CIs), recent research has proposed varying the stimulation rate based on slowly varying frequency modulation (FM) information. The present study investigated the abilities of CI users to detect FM with simultaneous amplitude modulation (AM). FM detection thresholds (FMDTs) for 10-Hz sinusoidal FM and upward frequency sweeps were measured as a function of standard frequency (75-1000 Hz). Three AM conditions were tested, including (1) No AM, (2) 20-Hz Sinusoidal AM (SAM) with modulation depths of 10%, 20%, or 30%, and (3) Noise AM (NAM), in which the amplitude was randomly and uniformly varied over a range of 1, 2, or 3 dB, relative to the reference amplitude. Results showed that FMDTs worsened with increasing standard frequencies, and were lower for sinusoidal FM than for upward frequency sweeps. Simultaneous AM significantly interfered with FM detection; FMDTs were significantly poorer with simultaneous NAM than with SAM. Besides, sinusoidal FMDTs significantly worsened when the starting phase of simultaneous SAM was randomized. These results suggest that FM and AM in CI partly share a common loudness-based coding mechanism and the feasibility of "FM+AM" strategies for CI speech processing may be limited.  相似文献

The effect on modulation detection interference (MDI) of timing of gating of the modulation of target and interferer, with synchronously gated carriers, was investigated in three experiments. In a two-interval, two-alternative forced choice adaptive procedure, listeners had to detect 15 Hz sinusoidal amplitude modulation (AM) or frequency modulation (FM) imposed for 200 ms in the temporal center of a 600 ms target sinusoidal carrier. In the first experiment, 15 Hz sinusoidal FM was imposed in phase on both target and interferer carriers. Thresholds were lower for nonoverlapping than for synchronous modulation of target and interferer, but MDI still occurred for the former. Thresholds were significantly higher when the modulators were gated synchronously than when the interferer modulator was gated on before and off after that of the target. This contrasts with the findings of Oxenham and Dau [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 110, 402-408 (2001)], who reported no effect of modulation asynchrony on AM detection thresholds, using a narrowband noise modulator. Using FM, experiment 2 showed that for temporally overlapping modulation of target and interferer, modulator asynchrony had no significant effect when the interferer was modulated by a narrowband noise. Experiment 3 showed that, for AM, synchronous gating of modulation of the target and interferer produced lower thresholds than asynchronous gating, especially for sinusoidal modulation of the interferer. Results are discussed in terms of specific cues available for periodic modulation, and differences between perceptual grouping on the basis of common AM and FM.  相似文献

Gockel, Carlyon, and Plack [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 116, 1092-1104 (2004)] showed that discrimination of the fundamental frequency (F0) of a target tone containing only unresolved harmonics was impaired when an interfering complex tone with fixed F0 was added to the target, but filtered into a lower frequency region. This pitch discrimination interference (PDI) was greater when the interferer contained resolved harmonics than when it contained only unresolved harmonics. Here, it is examined whether this occurred because, when the interferer contained unresolved harmonics, "pitch pulse asynchrony (PPA)" between the target and interferer provided a cue that enhanced performance; this was possible in the earlier experiment because both target and interferer had components added in sine phase. In experiment 1, it was shown that subjects were moderately sensitive to the direction of PPA across frequency regions. In experiments 2 and 3, PPA cues were eliminated by adding the components of the target only, or of both target and interferer, in random phase. For both experiments, an interferer containing resolved harmonics produced more PDI than an interferer containing unresolved harmonics. These results show that PDI is smaller for an interferer with unresolved harmonics even when cues related to PPA are eliminated.  相似文献

It has been proposed that the detection of frequency modulation (FM) of sinusoidal carriers can be mediated by two mechanisms; a place mechanism based on FM-induced amplitude modulation (AM) in the excitation pattern, and a temporal mechanism based on phase locking in the auditory nerve. The temporal mechanism appears to be "sluggish" and does not play a role for FM rates above about 10 Hz. It also does not play a role for high carrier frequencies (above about 5 kHz). This experiment provided a further test of the hypothesis that the effectiveness of the temporal mechanism depends upon the time spent close to frequency extremes during the modulation cycle. Psychometric functions for the detection of AM and FM were measured for two carrier frequencies, 1 and 6 kHz. The modulation waveform was quasitrapezoidal. Within each modulation period, P, a time Tss was spent at each extreme of frequency or amplitude. The transitions between the extremes, with duration Ttrans had the form of a half-cycle of a cosine function. The modulation rate was 2, 5, 10, or 20 Hz, giving values of P of 500, 200, 100, and 50 ms. TSS varied from 0 ms (sinusoidal modulation) up to 160, 80, 40, or 20 ms, for rates of 2, 5, 10, and 20 Hz, respectively. The detectability of AM was not greatly affected by modulation rate or by the value of TSS, except for a slight improvement with increasing TSS for the lowest modulation rates; this was true for both carrier frequencies. For FM of the 6-kHz carrier, the pattern of results was similar to that found for AM, which is consistent with an excitation-pattern model of FM detection. For FM of the 1-kHz carrier, performance improved markedly with increasing TSS, especially for the lower FM rates; there was no change in performance with TSS for the 20-Hz modulation rate. The results are consistent with the idea that detection of FM of a 1-kHz carrier is partly mediated by a sluggish temporal mechanism. That mechanism benefits from greater time spent at frequency extremes of the modulation cycle for rates up to 10 Hz.  相似文献

When all of the components in a harmonic complex tone are shifted in frequency by delta f, the pitch of the complex shifts roughly in proportion to delta f. For tones with a small number of components, the shift is usually somewhat larger than predicted from pitch theories, which has been attributed to the influence of combination tones [Smoorenburg, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 48, 924-941 (1970)]. Experiment 1 assessed whether combination tones influence the pitch of complex tones with more than five harmonics, by using noise to mask the combination tones. The matching stimulus was a harmonic complex. Test complexes were bandpass filtered with passbands centered on harmonic numbers 5 (resolved), 11 (intermediate), or 16 (unresolved) and fundamental frequencies (FOs) were 100, 200, or 400 Hz. For the intermediate and unresolved conditions, the matching stimuli were filtered with the same passband to minimize differences in the excitation patterns of the test and matching stimuli. For the resolved condition, the matching stimulus had a passband centered above that of the test stimulus, to avoid common partials. For resolved and intermediate conditions, pitch shifts were observed that could generally be predicted from the frequencies of the partials. The shifts were unaffected by addition of noise to mask combination tones. For the unresolved condition, no pitch shift was observed, which suggests that pitch is not based on temporal fine structure for stimuli containing only high unresolved harmonics. Experiment 2 used three-component complexes resembling those of Schouten [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 34, 1418-1424 (1962)]. Nominal harmonic numbers were 3, 4, 5 (resolved), 8, 9, 10 (intermediate), or 13, 14, 15 (unresolved) and F0s were 50, 100, 200, or 400 Hz. Clear shifts in the matches were found for all conditions, including unresolved. For the latter, subjects may have matched the "center of gravity" of the excitation patterns of the test and matching stimuli.  相似文献

Thresholds (F0DLs) were measured for discrimination of the fundamental frequency (F0) of a group of harmonics (group B) embedded in harmonics with a fixed F0. Miyazono and Moore [(2009). Acoust. Sci. & Tech. 30, 383386] found a large training effect for tones with high harmonics in group B, when the harmonics were added in cosine phase. It is shown here that this effect was due to use of a cue related to pitch pulse asynchrony (PPA). When PPA cues were disrupted by introducing a temporal offset between the envelope peaks of the harmonics in group B and the remaining harmonics, F0DLs increased markedly. Perceptual learning was examined using a training stimulus with cosine-phase harmonics, F0 = 50 Hz, and high harmonics in group B, under conditions where PPA was not useful. Learning occurred, and it transferred to other cosine-phase tones, but not to random-phase tones. A similar experiment with F0 = 100 Hz showed a learning effect which transferred to a cosine-phase tone with mainly high unresolved harmonics, but not to cosine-phase tones with low harmonics, and not to random-phase tones. The learning found here appears to be specific to tones for which F0 discrimination is based on distinct peaks in the temporal envelope.  相似文献

To better understand the processing of complex high-frequency sounds, modulation-detection thresholds were measured for sinusoidal frequency modulation (SFM), quasi-frequency modulation (QFM), sinusoidal amplitude modulation (SAM), and random-phase FM (RPFM). At the lowest modulation frequency (5 Hz) modulation thresholds expressed as AM depth were similar for RPFM, SAM and QFM suggesting the predominance of envelope cues. At the higher modulation frequencies (20 and 40 Hz) thresholds expressed as total frequency excursions were similar for SFM and QFM suggesting a common mechanism, one perhaps based on single-channel FM-to-AM conversion or on a multi-channel place mechanism. The fact that the nominal envelopes of SFM and QFM are different (SFM has a flat envelope), seems to preclude processing based on the envelope of the external stimulus. Also, given the 4-kHz carrier and the similarity to previously published results obtained with a 1-kHz carrier, processing based on temporally-coded fine structure for all four types of modulation appears unlikely.  相似文献

The role of harmonicity in masking was studied by comparing the effect of harmonic and inharmonic maskers on the masked thresholds of noise probes using a three-alternative, forced-choice method. Harmonic maskers were created by selecting sets of partials from a harmonic series with an 88-Hz fundamental and 45 consecutive partials. Inharmonic maskers differed in that the partial frequencies were perturbed to nearby values that were not integer multiples of the fundamental frequency. Average simultaneous-masked thresholds were as much as 10 dB lower with the harmonic masker than with the inharmonic masker, and this difference was unaffected by masker level. It was reduced or eliminated when the harmonic partials were separated by more than 176 Hz, suggesting that the effect is related to the extent to which the harmonics are resolved by auditory filters. The threshold difference was not observed in a forward-masking experiment. Finally, an across-channel mechanism was implicated when the threshold difference was found between a harmonic masker flanked by harmonic bands and a harmonic masker flanked by inharmonic bands. A model developed to explain the observed difference recognizes that an auditory filter output envelope is modulated when the filter passes two or more sinusoids, and that the modulation rate depends on the differences among the input frequencies. For a harmonic masker, the frequency differences of adjacent partials are identical, and all auditory filters have the same dominant modulation rate. For an inharmonic masker, however, the frequency differences are not constant and the envelope modulation rate varies across filters. The model proposes that a lower variability facilitates detection of a probe-induced change in the variability, thus accounting for the masked threshold difference. The model was supported by significantly improved predictions of observed thresholds when the predictor variables included envelope modulation rate variance measured using simulated auditory filters.  相似文献

The ratios between the modulation index (eta) for just noticeable FM of a sinusoidally modulated pure tone and the degree of modulation (m) for just noticeable AM at the same carrier and the same modulation frequency were measured at carrier frequencies of 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 kHz. Signal levels were 20 dB SL and 50 dB SPL or 80 dB SPL. At low modulation frequencies, for example, 8 Hz, AM and FM elicit very different auditory sensations (i.e., a fluctuation in loudness or pitch, respectively). In this case, eta and m show different values for just noticeable modulation. Since both stimuli have almost equal amplitude spectra if eta equals m (m less than 0.3), the difference in detection thresholds reflects differences in the phase relation between carrier and sidebands in AM and FM. With increasing modulation frequency, the eta-m ratio decreases and reaches unity at a modulation frequency called the "critical modulation frequency" (CMF). At modulation frequencies above the CMF, the same modulation thresholds are obtained for AM and FM. Therefore, it can be concluded that the difference in phase between the two types of stimuli is not perceived in this range. At center frequencies below 1 kHz, where phase errors caused by headphones and ear canal presumably are small, the CMF is useful in estimating critical bandwidth.  相似文献

As part of an ongoing study of auditory aging, detection of sinusoidal and quasitrapezoidal frequency modulation (FM) was measured with a 5-Hz modulation frequency and 500- and 4000-Hz carriers in two experiments. In Experiment 1, psychometric functions for FM detection were measured with several modulation waveform time patterns in younger adults with normal hearing. Detection of a three-cycle modulated signal improved when its duration was extended by a preceding unmodulated cycle, an effect similar to adding a modulated cycle. In Experiment 2, FM detection was measured for younger and older adults with normal hearing using two psychophysical methods. Similar to frequency discrimination, FM detection was poorer in older than younger subjects and age-related differences were larger at 500 Hz than at 4000 Hz, suggesting that FM detection with low modulation frequencies and frequency discrimination may share common underlying mechanisms. One mechanism is likely related to temporal information coded by neural phase locking which is strong at low frequencies and decreases with increasing frequency, as observed in animals. The frequency-dependent aging effect suggests that this temporal mechanism may be affected by age. The effect of psychophysical method was sizable and frequency dependent, whereas the effect of modulation waveform was minimal.  相似文献

Pitch discrimination interference (PDI) refers to an impairment in the ability to discriminate changes in the fundamental frequency (F0) of a target harmonic complex, caused by another harmonic complex (the interferer) presented simultaneously in a remote spectral region. So far, PDI has been demonstrated for target complexes filtered into a higher spectral region than the interferer and containing no peripherally resolved harmonics in their passband. Here, it is shown that PDI also occurs when the target harmonic complex contains resolved harmonics in its passband (experiment 1). PDI was also observed when the target was filtered into a lower spectral region than that of the interferer (experiment 2), revealing that differences in relative harmonic dominance and pitch salience between the simultaneous target and the interferer, as confirmed using pitch matches (experiment 3), do not entirely explain PDI. When the target was in the higher spectral region, and the F0 separation between the target and the interferer was around 7% or 10%, dramatic PDI effects were observed despite the relatively large FO separation between the two sequential targets (14%-20%). Overall, the results suggest that PDI is more general than previously thought, and is not limited to targets consisting only of unresolved harmonics.  相似文献
