The ideal spray theory of Edwards and Marx was used to investigate the dependence of effervescent spray unsteadiness on fluid properties and atomizer internal design. Results demonstrate that fluid properties and internal design of atomizer directly affect the two-phase flow pattern inside the atomizer which consequently affects the spray unsteadiness of the atomizer. Water sprays are more unsteady when the air to liquid ratio (ALR) increases, whereas, more unsteady is observed for using glycerol/water mixture (high-viscosity Newtonian fluid) or glycerol/water/xanthan (non-Newtonian fluid) mixture as ALR reduces. In addition, sprays using low-viscosity or strong non-Newtonian fluids usually are more unsteady, regardless of ALR.A short mixing chamber results in less unsteady for water but has no effect on spray unsteadiness for high-viscosity or non-Newtonian fluids at ALR of 0.15. Otherwise, the influence of mixing chamber distance on the spray quality is weak at ALR of 0.15. Large diameter of inclined aeration holes shows the low spray unsteadiness and good spray quality for water but causes more unsteady for glycerol/water/xanthan mixture at ALR of 0.15. Furthermore, the diameter of the inclined aeration holes has little influence on spray unsteadiness for glycerol/water mixture. Spray unsteadiness and quality are not affected by the angle of aeration holes for three fluids at ALR of 0.15.  相似文献

A water-air impinging jets atomizer is investigated in this study, which consists of flow visualization using high speed photography and mean droplet size and velocity distribution measurements of the spray using Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA). Topological structures and break up details of the generated spray in the far and near fields are presented with and without air jet and for an impinging angle of 90°. Spray angle increases with the water jet velocity, air flow rate and impinging angle. PDA results indicate that droplet size is smallest in the spray center, with minimum value of Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of 50 µm at the air flow rate of Qm = 13.50 g/min. SMD of droplets increases towards the spray outer region gradually to about 120 µm. The mean droplet velocity component W along the air-jet axis is highest in the spray center and decreases gradually with increasing distance from the spray center. SMD normalized by the air nozzle diameter is found firstly to decrease with gas-to-liquid mass ratio (GLR) and air-to-liquid momentum ratio (ALMR) and then remain almost constant. Its increasing with aerodynamic Weber number indicates an exponential variation. The study sheds light on the performance of water-air impinging jets atomizers providing useful information for future CFD simulation works.  相似文献

The paper contains the results of experimental investigation of air–water and air–silica suspension atomization process in effervescent nozzles with internal mixing obtained by the use of the digital microphotography method. In experiments the different aqueous solutions of silica Aerosil 300 of different concentration have been used. The suspensions containing up to 0.04 (kg solid particles/kg solution) have Newtonian rheological properties. The observations were carried out at liquid flow rates changed from 0.0014 to 0.011 (kg/s) and gas flow rates from 0.00015 to 0.0065 (kg/s). It corresponded to gas to liquid mass ratios (GLR) values from 0.014 to 0.46. The analysis of photos shows that the droplets which have been formed during the liquid atomization have very different sizes. The differences between characteristics of effervescent atomization for water and suspensions used have not been observed. The present study confirmed the previous reports which suggested that the small particles added to solution do not change spray characteristics. The experimental results show that CD and SMD are non-linear functions of GLR. Their values are decreasing rapidly as GLR is increased from zero to around 0.07 and thereafter decreasing at a slower rate with further increase in GLR. In the same point (GLR = 0.07) the value of α is maximal. The first regime is characteristic for bubbly flow. The second is typical of annular flow regime. Boundary between bubbly and annular flow regime is observed at GLR = 0.07 for investigated systems. The correlations for CD and Sauter mean diameter were proposed. The results may be used for example to verify numerical models or comparisons with respect to similar atomization processes.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of experimental studies on atomization of the emulsions flowing through twin-fluid atomizers obtained by the use of the digital microphotography method. The main elements of the test installation were: nozzle, reservoir, pump and measurement units of liquid flow. The photographs were taken by a digital camera with automatic flash at exposure time of 1/8000 s and subsequently analyzed using Image Pro-Plus. The oils used were mineral oils 20–90, 20–70, 20–50 and 20–30. The studies were performed at flow rates of liquid phase changed from 0.0014 to 0.011 (dm3/s) and gas phase changed from 0.28 to 1.4 (dm3/s), respectively. The analysis of photos shows that the droplets being formed during the liquid atomization have very different sizes. The smallest droplets have diameters of the order of 10 μm. The experimental results showed that the changes in physical properties of a liquid phase lead to the significant changes in the spray characteristics. The analysis of the photos of water and emulsions atomization process showed that the droplet sizes are dependent on gas and liquid flow rates, construction of nozzle and properties of liquid. The differences between characteristics of atomization for water and emulsions have been observed. Analysis of photos on forming the droplets in air–water and air-emulsions systems showed that droplets are bigger in air-emulsion system (at the same value of gas to liquid mass ratio). The values of Sauter mean diameter (SMD) increased with increase of volume fraction of oil in emulsion. The droplet size increased with emulsion viscosity.  相似文献

Airblast atomizers are especially useful and commonplace in liquid fuel combustion applications. However, the spray formation processes, the droplet dynamics and the final drop size distributions are still not sufficiently understood due to the coupled gas-liquid interactions and turbulence generation. Therefore, empirical and semi-empirical approaches are typically used to estimate the global spray parameters. To develop a physical understanding of the spray evolution, a plain-jet airblast atomizer was investigated in an atmospheric spray rig using the phase-Doppler technique. The simultaneous drop size and axial and radial velocity components were measured on radial traverses across the spray at various axial distances from the nozzle for a range of atomizing pressures. The droplet turbulent and mean kinetic energies were found to be proportional to the atomizing pressure. Hence, the scatter of the radial motion of the droplets increased with the atomizing pressure. A droplet stability analysis was performed to locate the regions characterized by ongoing secondary atomization. The volume-to-surface diameter, D32, of the fully developed spray was compared with estimates provided by five published formulae. The role of liquid viscosity, hence the Ohnesorge number, was found to be negligible in the investigated regime. Three commonly used size distribution functions were fitted to the measured data to analyze their dependence on the atomizing pressure. The Gamma distribution function was found to give the best approximation to the atomization process.  相似文献

Coalescence of sessile droplets is studied experimentally with water–glycerin mixtures of different viscosities. Effects of viscosity on the dimensionless spreading length (Ψ) and the center-to-center distance (L) are investigated for two droplets; the first droplet (Ds) is stationary on a substrate and the second droplet (D0) landing at a center-to-center distance L from the first droplet. For a low viscosity fluid, Ψ is maximum when L approaches zero (or λ  1, where λ = 1  L/Ds), which represents a head-on collision. For a high viscosity fluid, Ψ is minimum when λ  0.6. The effect of λ on line printing for various viscosities is also examined by printing multiple droplets. We found that the larger the viscosity, the less the breakup between droplets; viscosities smaller than 60 wt% glycerin yielded line breakup. The overlap ratio of λ > 0.3 produced not a line, but a bigger droplet or puddle because of coalescence. Data obtained in this work can provide insights for the fabrication of conductive microtracks or microinterconnects in printed-electronics applications where a line breakup between droplets would lead to an electrical circuit short.  相似文献

In order to develop the interfacial area transport equation for the interfacial transfer terms in the two-fluid model, accurate data sets on axial development of local parameters such as void fraction, interfacial area concentration, interfacial gas velocity and Sauter mean diameter are indispensable to verify the modeled source and sink terms in the interfacial area transport equation. From this point of view, local measurements of both group 1 spherical/distorted bubbles and group 2 cap/slug bubbles in vertical upward air–water two-phase flow in a large diameter pipe with 200 mm in inner diameter and 26 m in height were performed at three axial locations of z/D = 41.5, 82.8 and 113 as well as 11 radial locations from r/R = 0–0.95 by using four-sensor probe method. Here, z, r, D and R are the axial distance from the inlet, radial distance from the pipe center, pipe diameter and pipe radius, respectively. The liquid flow rate and the void fraction ranged from 0.0505 m/s to 0.312 m/s and from 1.98% to 32.6%, respectively in the present experiment. The flow condition covered extensive region of bubbly flow, cap turbulent flow as well as their transition. The extensive analysis on the radial profiles of local flow parameters and their axial developments demonstrate the development of interfacial structures along the flow direction due to the bubble coalescence and breakup and the gas expansion. The significant decrease in void faction and interfacial area concentration and the increase in Sauter mean diameter and interfacial velocity were observed when the gradual flow regime transition occurred. Finally, the net change in the interfacial area concentration due to the bubble coalescence and breakup was quantitatively investigated in the present paper to reflect the true transfer mechanisms in observed two-phase flows.  相似文献

The Large Eddy Simulation model was introduced to study the micro spray characteristics under ultra-high injection pressure (>220 MPa). EFS8400 spray test platform was set up to verify the accuracy of the numerical model. The mechanisms of micro spray characteristics were studied intensively under different injection pressures (180 MPa, 240 MPa) and nozzle diameters (0.1 mm, 0.16 mm). The results indicated that the micro turbulence vortex structures can be captured, especially in the liquid spray core area. Large Eddy Simulation model combined with the small grid size of 0.25 mm show a huge advantage in studying the micro spray characteristics under ultra-high injection pressure; The turbulence vorticity and spray velocity for injection pressure of 240 MPa are more intensive than that of 180 MPa, and also the ultra-high injection pressure can contribute to strong turbulence disturbance between spray and surrounding air, which is helpful to improve the quality of spray; The spray velocity field extended wider for the diameter of 0.16 mm, and also the values of velocity in the spray center is higher than that of the diameter of 0.1 mm; The entrainment vortex appeared at the edge of the large velocity gradient between spray and surrounding air, and the higher velocity gradient for ultra-high injection pressure (240 MPa) between the spray and air is easier to increase the generation of entrainment vortex in the downstream of the spray, which can significantly increase the quality of spray and atomization.

Centrifugal spray injected at various angles in gas crossflow has been studied experimentally using PIV visualization system and image-processing techniques. Experiments were carried out inside a rectangular duct (95 mm × 95 mm in cross-section) at ambient temperature and pressure, with different gas Reynolds numbers (vary from 12,900 to 45,000) and three injection angles (60°, 90° and 120°). The spray angle of the centrifugal nozzle is 80°, with D32 of 80 μm. The instantaneous images of droplets distribution and the values of the line-averaged D32 at different positions on the cross-sections along the flow field for each condition were obtained, and their flow field configurations were achieved. Quantitative assessments of mixing degree between two phases for different injection angles were determined using a spatial unmixedness parameter. It is found that the addition of droplets into the gas crossflow enhanced the turbulence intensity of the gas crossflow and caused different-scale vortices. The flow field structure, to a great extent, is dependent on the injection angle. The entrainment and centrifugal force of large vortex lead to uneven droplet distribution and moreover influence the mixing of droplets and gas crossflow. A better mixing result can be obtained with the injection angle of nozzles of 60°.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an experimental study of a twin-fluid internally mixed swirl atomizer. In this type of injectors, atomization is attained by injecting a small amount of air (i.e. of the order of less than 16% of the mass flow rate of liquid) into a liquid stream within the injector and the two-phase air liquid mixture is passed through a swirling passage to impart a swirling motion to the flow. Since most of the energy for atomization is supplied to the liquid by the atomizing air, a significantly small pressure drop can produce very fine spray with a small amount of atomizing air. At low values of air–liquid mass ratio (ALR), the appreciable tangential component of velocity with respect to the axial velocity provides a hollow cone spray structure, which turns into a solid cone spray with the increase in axial momentum, through either an increase in ALR or the liquid supply pressure. The results presented in this paper suggest that the investigated injector could be used to control the flow rate and spray characteristics (e.g. spray cone angle, spray solidity, breaking distance, and the droplet diameter) independent of each other by simultaneously varying the supply pressure of the liquid and the atomizing air flow rate. The controlled atomization studied in this paper for a twin-fluid internally mixed swirl atomizer makes it attractive to be used for various commercial applications as the atomizer is capable of providing various spray characteristics depending upon the application requirement.  相似文献

Atomization of liquids with high viscosity is always a challenge, especially when small diameter droplets and high liquid flow rates are simultaneously required. In the present research, the performance of a Venturi–vortex twin-fluid swirl nozzle is examined, attending to its capabilities to generate droplets with diameters below 20 µm when atomizing pure glycerin at room temperature. In this nozzle, air is injected tangentially in a central convergent section, and discharges suctioning the liquid fed to a coaxial chamber, here using a gear pump. The resulting spray is visualized and analyzed. Droplet size distributions are measured with a laser diffractometer. As expected, droplet diameter increases with liquid flow rate, and quickly diminishes when air flow rate is increased. Sauter mean diameters (SMD) below 15 µm can be obtained even when atomizing pure glycerin. However, these values are obtained for relatively low glycerin flow rates (∼5 l/h), and with rather wide distributions. For 10 l/h and an air-to-liquid mass flow rate ratio (ALR) of 13.7 more than 26% of the glycerin volume is atomized in droplets smaller than 20 µm. Liquid ligaments are observed near the nozzle exit, but they tend to break up while moving downstream.  相似文献

This paper presents some results of URANS study of flow and heat transfer in a matrix of wall-bounded 8 × 8 round pins, mimicking internal cooling passage of gas-turbine blades. The focus is on flow unsteadiness, its role in heat transfer and the capabilities of RANS models to reproduce these features in a set-up of industrial relevance. The results for two Reynolds numbers, 10 000 and 30 000, are compared with the available experiments and LES. It is shown that the elliptic-relaxation eddy-viscosity model, ζ-f captures vortex shedding and the consequent gross effects on the flow development. However, a closer look at flow details reveals discrepancies, especially around the first three pin rows, where the unsteadiness reproduced by URANS shows much weaker amplitudes as compared with LES. Only further downstream the succession of forcing from a series of pins produced unsteadiness akin to those captured by LES. The comparison suggests that smaller structures undetected by URANS need to be resolved to capture properly the separation and wake characteristics of each row. At Re = 10 000, the average endwall Nusselt number agrees well with the LES, both being about 20% lower than in the experiment. For Re = 30 000 the URANS Nusselt is within 10% of the experimental value.  相似文献

Internal gas velocity fluctuations and their effects on the mist diffusion process were examined in a long horizontal pipe to understand oil mist transportation, particularly in the laminar-to-turbulent flow transition region. Three hot-wire anemometers and aerosol concentration monitors were used to deduce these effects as the two-phase mist flow gradually developed in the stream-wise direction. We found significant axial mist diffusion at Reynolds numbers (Re) < 1000 because of passive scalar transport by Poiseuille flow. However, this diffusion was restricted by the non-zero inertia of the mist at a Stokes number, O(10−5), relying on the Brownian motion of the mist. At Re > 2400, a sharp mist waveform was maintained by a turbulent flow with active radial mixing. New data were obtained within the range of 1000 < Re < 2400, which cannot be explained by interpolation between the above-mentioned two states. The mist concentration displays multiple temporal peaks at Re < 2000 owing to perturbations of localized turbulence as well as radial anisotropy as being conveyed more than 2000-diameters in distance. This behavior is caused by intermittent disturbances induced by the pipe wall roughness, which sharply distorts the wall-aligned laminar mist layer left by parabolic axial stretching of local laminar flow.  相似文献

Future fuel stocks for spark-ignition engines are expected to include a significant portion of bio-derived components with quite different chemical and physical properties to those of liquid hydrocarbons. State-of-the-art high-pressure multi-hole injectors for latest design direct-injection spark-ignition engines offer some great benefits in terms of fuel atomisation, as well as flexibility in in-cylinder fuel targeting by selection of the exact number and angle of the nozzle’s holes. However, in order to maximise such benefits for future spark-ignition engines and minimise any deteriorating effects with regards to exhaust emissions, it is important to avoid liquid fuel impingement onto the cylinder walls and take into consideration various types of biofuels. This paper presents results from the use of heat flux sensors to characterise the locations and levels of liquid fuel impingement onto the engine’s liner walls when injected from a centrally located multi-hole injector with an asymmetric pattern of spray plumes. Ethanol, butanol, iso-octane, gasoline and a blend of 10% ethanol with 90% gasoline (E10) were tested and compared. The tests were performed in the cylinder of a direct-injection spark-ignition engine at static conditions (i.e. quiescent chamber at 1.0 bar) and motoring conditions (at full load with inlet plenum pressure of 1.0 bar) with different engine temperatures in order to decouple competing effects. The collected data were analysed to extract time-resolved signals, as well as mean and standard deviation levels of peak heat flux. The results were interpreted with reference to in-cylinder spray formation characteristics, as well as fuel evaporation rates obtained by modelling. In addition, high-speed images of single droplets of fuel impinging onto the array of the heat flux sensor were acquired with simultaneous sampling of the heat flux signal in an attempt to provide further interpretation. The single droplet tests showed ability of the signals to quantify droplet mass impinged on the sensor. Analysis of the peak heat flux at static engine conditions quantified values of fuel temperature at impingement in agreement with the wet bulb temperatures predicted by the droplet evaporation model. Comparison of the static and motoring engine heat flux signals around the bore showed the effect of the intake flow on the spray’s pattern at impingement and demonstrated fuel presence on the liner that survived at exhaust valve open timing. The general behaviour was different for the alcohols to that of the hydrocarbons, with ethanol exhibiting the effect of its high latent heat on the signals and butanol exhibiting effects related to poor atomization and slow evaporation.  相似文献

The concurrent upward two-phase flow of air and water in a long vertical large diameter pipe with an inner diameter (D) of 200 mm and a height (z) of 26 m (z/D = 130) was investigated experimentally at low superficial liquid velocities from 0.05009 to 0.3121 m/s and the superficial gas velocities from 0.01779 to 0.5069 m/s. The resultant void fractions range from 0.03579 to 0.4059. According to the observations using a high speed video camera, the flow regimes of bubbly, developing cap bubbly and fully-developed cap bubbly flows prevailed in the flows. The developing cap bubbly flow appeared as a flow regime transition from bubbly to fully-developed cap bubble flow in the vertical large diameter pipe. The developing cap bubbly flow changes gradually and lasts for a long time period and a wide axial region in the flow direction, in contrast to a sudden transition from bubbly to slug flows in a small diameter pipe. The analysis in this study showed that the flow regime transition depends not only on the void fraction but also on the axial distance in the flow and the pipe diameter. The axial flow development brings about the transition to happen in a lower void fraction flow and the increase of pipe diameter causes the transition to happen in a higher void fraction flow. The measured void fraction showed an N-shaped axial changing manner that the void fraction increases monotonously with axial position in the bubbly flow, decreases non-monotonously with axial position in the developing cap bubbly flow, and increases monotonously again with axial position in the fully-developed cap bubbly flow. The temporary void fraction decrease phenomenon in the transition region from bubbly to cap bubbly flow can be attributed to the formation of medium to large cap bubbles and their gradual growth into the maximum size of cap bubble and/or cluster of large cap bubbles in the developing cap bubbly flow. In order to predict the N-shaped axial void fraction changing behaviors in the flow regime transition from bubbly to cap bubbly flow, the existing 12 drift flux correlation sets for large diameter pipes are reviewed and their predictabilities are studied against the present experimental data. Although some drift flux correlation sets, such as those of Clark and Flemmer (1986) and Hibiki and Ishii (2003), can predict the present experimental data with reasonable average relative deviations, no drift flux correlation set for distribution parameter and drift velocity can give a reliable prediction for the observed N-shaped axial void fraction changing behaviors in the region from bubbly to cap bubbly flow in a vertical large diameter pipe.  相似文献
