The heat transfer and the pressure drop characteristics of laminar flow of viscous oil (195 < Pr < 525) through rectangular and square ducts with internal transverse rib turbulators on two opposite surfaces of the ducts and with wire coil inserts have been studied experimentally. Circular duct has also been used. The transverse ribs in combination with wire coil inserts have been found to perform better than either ribs or wire coil inserts acting alone. The heat transfer and the pressure drop measurements have been taken in separate test sections. Heat transfer tests were carried out in electrically heated stainless steel ducts incorporating uniform wall heat flux boundary conditions. Pressure drop tests were carried out in acrylic ducts. The flow friction and thermal characteristics are governed by duct aspect ratio, coil helix angle and wire diameter of the coil, rib height and rib spacing, Reynolds number and Prandtl number. Correlations developed for friction factor and Nusselt number have predicted the experimental data satisfactorily. The performance of the geometry under investigation has been evaluated. It has been found that on the basis of constant pumping power, up to fifty per cent heat duty increase occurs for the combined ribs and wire coil inserts case compared to the individual ribs and wire coil inserts cases in the measured experimental parameters space. On the constant heat duty basis, the pumping power has been reduced up to forty per cent for the combined enhancement geometry than the individual enhancement geometries.  相似文献

The heat transfer and the pressure drop characteristics of turbulent flow of air (10,000 < Re < 100,000) through rectangular and square ducts with combined internal axial corrugations on all the surfaces of the ducts and with twisted-tape inserts with and without oblique teeth have been studied experimentally. The axial corrugations in combination with twisted-tapes of all types with oblique teeth have been found to perform better than those without oblique teeth in combination with axial corrugations. The heat transfer and the pressure drop measurements have been taken in separate test sections. Heat transfer tests were carried out in electrically heated stainless steel ducts incorporating uniform wall heat flux boundary conditions. Pressure drop tests were carried out in acrylic ducts. The flow friction and thermal characteristics are governed by duct aspect ratio, corrugation angle, corrugation pitch, twist ratio, space ratio, length, tooth horizontal length and tooth angle of the twisted-tape, Reynolds number and Prandtl number. Correlations developed for friction factor and Nusselt number have predicted the experimental data satisfactorily. The performance of the geometry under investigation has been evaluated. It has been found that on the basis of constant pumping power, up to 55% heat duty increase occurs for the combined axial corrugation and regularly spaced twisted-tape elements inserts with oblique teeth case compared to without oblique teeth twisted-tape inserts cases in the measured experimental parameters space. On the constant heat duty basis, the pumping power has been reduced up to 47% for the combined enhancement geometry than the individual enhancement geometries. However, full-length and short-length twisted-tapes with oblique teeth in combination with axial corrugations show only marginal improvements over the twisted-tapes without oblique teeth.  相似文献

Flow pattern, void fraction and slug rise velocity on counter-current two-phase flow in a vertical round tube with wire-coil inserts are experimentally studied. Flow pattern and slug rise velocity are measured visually with a video camera. The void fraction is measured by the quick-closing valve method. Four kinds of coils with different coil pitches and coil diameters are used as inserts. The presence of wire-coil inserts induces disturbance into gas and liquid flows so that the shape and motion of gas slug or bubbles in a wire-coil inserted tube are quite different from those observed in a smooth tube without insert. The bubbly flow occurs in the low gas superficial velocity region in the wire-coil inserted tube, while the slug or churn/annular flow only appears in the smooth tube without insert over the all test range. The measured slug rise velocity in the wire-coil inserted tube is higher than that in the smooth tube. With modified mean flow velocity calculated with core area, the slug rise velocity in wire-coil tube inserted is in good agreement with Nicklin's correlation. The void fraction in a wire-coil inserted tube is lower than that in a smooth tube in the range of high gas superficial velocities. By introducing a simple assumption on considering the effective flowing area, the measured void fractions in a wire-coil inserted tube are in relatively good agreement with the predicted result based on the drift flux model proposed by others with the correlation for slug rise velocity given by others when the coil pitch is dense.  相似文献

Heat transfer distribution in rectangular ducts with V-shaped ribs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Heat transfer distributions are presented for a rectangular duct with two opposite wide walls arranged with V-shaped ribs pointing upstream or downstream relative to the main flow direction. The rectangular duct has an aspect ratio of 1/8. The parallel V-shaped circular ribs are arranged staggered on the two wide walls. The rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio is 0.06, with an attack angle of 60°. The pitch-to-height ratio equals 10. The tested Reynolds numbers range from 1000 to 6000. The test surface is sprayed with black paint and then liquid crystal, and a steady state method is adopted to obtain the temperature distribution between adjacent ribs. The secondary flow caused by the angled ribs creates different spanwise variation of the heat transfer coefficient on the rib-roughened wall for different V-rib orientations. Interaction between heat transfer and secondary flow is analyzed. In the streamwise direction, the temperature distribution shows a sawtooth behavior between a pair of adjacent ribs. Local Nusselt numbers are presented between a pair of adjacent ribs, and based on these the average Nusselt numbers are calculated to investigate the augmentation of heat transfer by the presence of the V-shaped ribs. An experimental study of developing and fully developed turbulent air flow in a square duct with two opposite rib-roughened walls in which the ribs are attached in a staggered fashion was conducted to determine the heat transfer characteristics. The rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio (e/DH) was 0.19, the rib pitch-to-height ratio (p/e) was 5.31. The streamwise temperature distribution was measured, and a law of the wall for the thermal boundary layer at each free-stream turbulence level was obtained. The effects of free-stream turbulence intensity with variations of 4–11% on heat transfer coefficients were also examined. Finally, the relationship between Nusselt number and Reynolds number was correlated. The results might be used in the design of turbine blade cooling channels.  相似文献

Turbulent heat transfer in a ribbed square duct of three different blockage ratios are investigated using direct numerical simulation (DNS). The results of ribbed duct cases are compared with those of a heated smooth duct flow. It is observed that owing to the existence of the ribs and confinement of the duct, organized secondary flows appear as large streamwise-elongated vortices, which intensely interact with the rib elements and four sidewalls and have profound influences on the transport of momentum and thermal energy. This study also shows that the drag and heat transfer coefficients are highly sensitive to the rib height. It is observed that as the rib height increases, the impinging effect of the flow on the windward face of the rib strengthens, leading to enhanced rates of turbulent mixing and heat transfer. The influence of sidewalls and rib height on the turbulence structures associated with temperature fluctuations are analyzed based on multiple tools such as vortex swirling strengths, temporal auto-correlations, spatial two-point cross-correlations, joint probability density functions (JPDF) between the temperature and velocity fluctuations, statistical moments of different orders, and temperature spectra.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted on two-phase flow in laterally ribbed rectangular ducts. Air–water adiabatic flow at atmospheric pressure and room temperature was driven through a 3.6 m long rectangular ribbed test section with cross-section of 100 × 50 mm. To investigate the effect of rib thickness and pitch on flow pattern diagrams and transition boundaries, nine various rib arrangements were implemented with thicknesses of 2, 4 and 8 mm and pitches of 50, 60, and 80 mm. Unlike non-ribbed rectangular duct, lateral rib arrangement did not allow any stratified flow to occur. However wavy, plug and slug flows were parallel in both flow conditions, rib existence caused explicitly coarser pattern shapes. Increasing the rib thickness, while keeping the pitch constant, results in different flow patterns to occur as well as dramatic changes in boundaries positions and shapes. On the other hand, as pitch shifts up at a constant rib thickness, one can notice the duplication of almost identical flow patterns and their boundaries however, boundary values undergo tangible changes. Consistent attention was paid to conditions under which wavy pattern zone extends while intermittent flow zones were avoided. Studies concerned ribbed duct are of major applicable value to designing and enhancing heat transfer systems.  相似文献

Heat transfer to non-newtonian fluids flowing laminarly through rectangular ducts is examined. The conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy are solved numerically with the aid of a finite volume technique. The viscoelastic behavior of the fluid is represented by the Criminale-Ericksen-Filbey (CEF) constitutive equation. Secondary flows occur due to the elastic behavior of the fluid, and, consequently, heat transfer is strongly enhanced. It is observed that shear thinning yields negligible heat transfer enhancement effect, when compared with the secondary flow effect. Maximum heat transfer is shown to occur for some combinations of parameters. Thus, there are optimal combinations of aspect ratio and Reynolds numbers, which depend on the fluid's mechanical behavior. This result can be usefully explored in thermal designs of certain industrial processes.  相似文献

The effect of transverse square grooves on the drag characteristics of a flat plate has been investigated using direct drag measurements in a tow tank. Two flat plates with 2.5 and 5 mm transverse square grooves, with groove spacing (s) to groove width (w) ratio, s/w=10, 20 and 40, were tested at plate length Reynolds numbers in the range 2–10×106. There is an increase in drag over the “smooth” plate for all s/w configurations. Received: 31 December 1997/Accepted: 4 April 1998  相似文献

Summary Analysis of the in plane lateral collapse of square and rectangular cross-section tubes is presented by considering the out-of-straightness of horizontal and vertical arms, corner radius, friction between the platens and the deforming specimen and instability of vertical arms. Results of collapse load for tubes of aluminium and mild steel, thus computed, are presented for some typical tube geometrics, and influence thereon of various parameters considered is discussed. Experiments were conducted wherein tubes of square and rectangular cross-sections of both the materials were laterally compressed between two parallel platens in an Instron machine. The observed collapse loads compare very well with the corresponding computed values.

The local heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of developing turbulent flows of air in three stationary ribbed square ducts have been investigated experimentally. These are: ribbed square duct with constant cross-section (straight duct), ribbed divergent square duct and ribbed convergent square duct. The convergent/divergent duct has an inclination angle of 1°. The measurement was conducted within the range of Reynolds numbers from 10 000 to 77 000. The heat transfer performance of the divergent/convergent ducts is compared with the ribbed straight duct under three constraints: identical mass flow rate, identical pumping power and identical pressure drop. Because of the streamwise flow acceleration or deceleration, the local heat transfer characteristics of the divergent and convergent ducts are quite different from those of the straight duct. In the straight duct, the fluid flow and heat transfer become fully developed after 2–3 ribs, while in the divergent and convergent ducts there is no such trend. The comparison shows that among the three ducts, the divergent duct has the highest heat transfer performance, the convergent duct has the lowest, while the straight duct locates somewhere in between.  相似文献

The work reported in this paper is a systematic experimental and numerical study of friction and heat transfer characteristics of divergent/convergent square ducts with an inclination angle of 1 in the two direction at cross section. The ratio of duct length to average hydraulic diameter is 10. For the comparison purpose, measurement and simulation are also conducted for a square duct with constant cross section area, which equals to the average cross section area of the convergent/divergent duct. In the numerical simulation the flow is modeled as being three-dimensional and fully elliptic by using the body-fitted finite volume method and the kɛ turbulence model. The uniform heat flux boundary condition is specified to simulate the electrical heating used in the experiments. The heat transfer performance of the divergent/convergent ducts is compared with the duct with uniform cross section under three constraints (identical mass flow rate, pumping power and pressure drop). The agreement of the experimental and numerical results is quite good except at the duct inlet. Results show that for the three ducts studied there is a weak secondary flow at the cross section, and the circumference distribution of the local heat transfer coefficient is not uniform, with an appreciable reduction in the four corner regions. In addition, the acceleration/deceleration caused by the cross section variation has a profound effect on the turbulent heat transfer: compared with the duct of constant cross section area, the divergent duct generally shows enhanced heat transfer behavior, while the convergent duct has an appreciable reduction in heat transfer performance. The theory of poroelasticity is introduced to study the hydraulic properties of the steady uniform turbulent flow in a partially vegetated rectangular channel. Plants are assumed as immovable media. The resistance caused by vegetation is expressed by the theory of poroelasticity. Considering the influence of a secondary flow, the momentum equation can be simplified. The momentum equation is nondimensionalized to obtain a smooth solution for the lateral distribution of the longitudinal velocity. To verify the model, an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) is used to measure the velocity field in a rectangular open channel partially with emergent artificial rigid vegetation. Comparisons between the measured data and the computed results show that the method can predict the transverse distributions of stream-wise velocities in turbulent flows in a rectangular channel with partial vegetation.  相似文献

The present investigation deals with the stress distribution in the vicinity of rectangular inserts in finite rectangular plates. This problem is more complex due to the singularities at the corners of the inserts. In this paper, the finite-element technique is used to determine the deformations and, subsequently, the stresses. The paper treats the problem in a generalized form in the sense that the size and orientation of the insert are taken as variables. The finite rectangular plate is subjected to a uniform axial tensile load. The material of the plate and that of the insert are considered to be different. Element selections are made which are optimal with regard to accuracy and computational effort. The local element stresses which generate considerable discontinuity at the element nodes are plotted. Averaging process for the local stress calculations is discussed and these are compared with the results available1 which are obtained by experimental techniques.  相似文献

Forced convection heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of air flow inside a horizontal semi-circular duct are investigated experimentally. The experiments are carried out on a semi-circular duct of 23 mm inner radius, 2 mm thickness, and 2,000 mm length within a range of Reynolds number (8,242 ≤ Re ≤ 57,794)., under uniform wall heat flux conditions. The friction factor is determined by measuring the axial static pressure at different selected axial stations along the semi-circular duct. The variations of surface and mean air temperatures, local heat transfer coefficient, local Nusselt number, and the friction factor with the axial dimensionless distance are presented. It is observed that, for a given value of Reynolds number, each of the local heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor has a relatively high value near the entrance of the semi-circular duct then it decreases with increasing the dimensionless axial distance until it approaches a nearly constant value at the fully developed region. Also, it is found that, with increasing the Reynolds number the average heat transfer coefficient is increased and the friction factor is decreased. Moreover, empirical correlations for the heat transfer coefficient and friction factor as a function of the Reynolds number are obtained.  相似文献

Experimental investigation had been conducted to study the steady-state forced convection heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the hydrodynamic fully-developed turbulent flow in the air-cooled horizontal equilateral triangular ducts, which were fabricated with the same length and hydraulic diameter. Inner surfaces of the ducts were fixed with square ribs with different side lengths of 6.35, 9.525 and 12.7 mm, respectively, and the uniform separation between the centre lines of two adjacent ribs was kept constant at 57.15 mm. Both the triangular ducts and the ribs were fabricated with duralumin. The experiments were performed with the hydraulic diameter based Reynolds number ranged from 3100 to 11300. The entire inner wall of the duct was heated uniformly, while the outer surface was thermally insulated. It was found that the Darcy friction factor of the duct was increasing rather linearly with the rib size, and forced convection could be enhanced by an internally ribbed surface. However, the heat transfer enhancement was not proportional to the rib size but a maximum forced convection heat transfer augmentation was obtained at the smallest rib of 6.35 mm. Non-dimensional expressions for the determination of the steady-state heat transfer coefficient and Darcy friction factor of the equilateral triangular ducts, which were internally fabricated with uniformly spaced square ribs of different sizes, were also developed. The laminar incompressible hydrodynamically fully developed and thermally developing flow is studied in a curved square duct with four longitudinal fins. The duct is successively subjected to constant wall temperature, to circumferentially uniform temperature and axially linearly or exponentially varying temperature. The local and fully developed Nusselt numbers are examined for various values of the Dean number and it is found that the heat transfer rate increases for high fins. The parameters that affect the entry length are studied and the fluctuations of the local Nu that appear in the entrance region are investigated. Temperature contour plots are presented for the visualization of the temperature field and functional relations for the Nusselt number are proposed in terms of the Dean and Prandtl numbers.  相似文献
