We calculate the Clarke and Michel-Penot subdifferentials of the function which maps a symmetric matrix to its mth largest eigenvalue. We show these two subdifferentials coincide, and are identical for all choices of index m corresponding to equal eigenvalues. Our approach is via the generalized directional derivatives of the eigenvalue function, thereby completing earlier studies on the classical directional derivative.

Calculating the Isotropic Subspace of a Symmetric Quasi-Definite Matrix

Solutions to the sesquilinear matrix equation X*DX + AX + X*B + C = 0, where all matrices are of size n × n, are put in correspondence with n-dimensional neutral (or isotropic) subspaces of the associated matrix M of order 2n. A way of constructing such subspaces is proposed for when M is a symmetric quasi-definite matrix of the (n, n) type.

We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of common unital divisors with given Smith forms of nonsingular matrix polynomials and common factorization of symmetric matrices over rings of polynomials with involution. We obtain conditions for the symmetric equivalence of such matrices.

Scalar Products of Symmetric Functions and Matrix Integrals

We present relations between Hirota-type bilinear operators, scalar products on spaces of symmetric functions, and integrals defining matrix-model partition functions. Using the fermionic Fock space representation, we prove an expansion of an associated class of KP and 2-Toda tau functions _r,n in a series of Schur functions generalizing the hypergeometric series and relate it to the scalar product formulas. We show how special cases of such tau functions can be identified as formal series for partition functions. A closed form expansion of log _r,n in terms of Schur functions is derived.     

Soliton Theory, Symmetric Functions and Matrix Integrals

We consider a certain scalar product of symmetric functions which is parameterized by a function r and an integer n. On the one hand we have a fermionic representation of this scalar product. On the other hand we get a representation of this product with the help of multi-integrals. This gives links between a theory of symmetric functions, soliton theory and models of random matrices (such as a model of normal matrices).
