A semiperfluorinated chain has been introduced into three series of lactate-based molecules, and their mesomorphic properities have been studied by DSC and optical polarized microscope. An abnormal phenomenon has been found that the introduction of a triple bond in the core of the molecule, which lengthened the molecule, gave rise to a decrease in the thermal stability of chiral smectic C phase and smectic A phase.2,3-Difluoro substituents of the phenylenic structure hinder the formation of the chiral smectic C phase because of the steric effect.  相似文献

Ferroelectricity has been observed in liquid crystalline mixtures of chiral smectic C type with a helical structure induced by chiral guest molecules (pitch p ≈ 100 μm). Samples of thickness d?p form monodomains with finite zero-field electric polarization because the spontaneous polarization of the smectic layers is not compensated by the helical twist. The temperature dependence of the spontaneous polarization has been studied near the phase transition smectic C→ smectic A.  相似文献

A series of chiral smectic C phase shish‐kebab type liquid crystal polymers was synthesized by low‐temperature solution condensation polymerization from 2,5‐bis[4‐((S)‐alkoxyl)benzoyloxy]hydroquinone and aliphatic diacylchloride. The monomers and their precursors were identified by using elemental analysis, infrared spectrum, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. The polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, temperature‐variable X‐ray diffraction, polarimeter and polarizing microscope (POM) with a heating stage. All the polymers entered into liquid crystal phase when heated to above their melting temperature. The Schlieren texture and sanded texture were observed on POM. All the chiral compounds and polymers showed high optical activity. Temperature‐variable, X‐ray diffraction study together with the POM and polarimetric analysis revealed that the polymers synthesized are chiral smectic C phase. Thus, the present report provides examples of shish‐kebab type polymers that form a chiral smectic C phase. The change of the melting temperature and isotropization temperature with the variation in molecular structure was also discussed. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A chiral liquid crystal compound exhibiting the ferroelectric smectic C phase and the recently discovered ferroelectric smectic M phase has been studied by measurements of the Goldstone-mode relaxation frequency and dielectric strength, the spontaneous polarization, the tilt angle and the helical pitch. The data allow the determination of the Goldstone-mode rotational viscosity and the pitch controlling elastic constant. The results indicate that the smectic M phase is characterized by a larger molecular order within the smectic layers compared to the smectic C phase confirming the assumption of a tilted hexatic structure for the smectic M phase.  相似文献

A homologous series of chiral 4-(3-methylpentyl)benzenethio-4′-n-alkoxy-benzoates has been studied. These thioesters display a ferroelectric, chiral smectic C phase in addition to cholesteric and smectic A phases. A comparison is made between the thioester series and a phenylbenzoate, having the same molecular end group. The effect of the different central linkage on the transition temperature, and on the physical and ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) properties has been investigated. Several mixtures, containing these thioester components, were calculated and formulated to obtain room temperature chiral smectic C phases. Spontaneous polarization Ps values and electro-optical response times are correlated with chemical structures. Although these thioesters have very low P s values, they are useful components for FLC mixtures because of their convenient chiral smectic C temperature ranges and their low viscosities.  相似文献

In this article, liquid crystal phases possessing a helical molecular assembly, including frustrated three dimensional (3D) structures, are overviewed. Then, the chirality‐originated superstructures in liquid crystals studied by the author are reviewed. The importance of the concept of “pre‐organization” is highlighted, thus, molecular design producing a strong chiral effect has been proposed. Dichiral twin materials have been prepared systematically based on this concept, and correlation between molecular architectures and resulting frustrated liquid crustal phases, such as smectic blue, cubic, tetragonal smectic Q, and sponge phases, has been investigated. An electrically induced anisotropic birefringent structure in the chiral isotropic phase and a photoinduced 3D‐3D phase transition in the smectic Q phase are introduced as possible application on the basis of the frustrated chiral 3D structured liquid crystal phases. A new type of chiral effect inducing the structural anisotropy in the 3D cubic structure of soft material is also described. © 2010 The Japan Chemical Journal Forum and Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Optical studies of smectic phases have been performed in homogeneously oriented samples of chiral 4-(2'-methylbutyl) phenyl-4'-n-octylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate (CE8). The helix structure has been found in smectic phases C, I and J, but not in the smectic G phase. Two chiral phases have been found between SI* and SG phases. Up to now one of them has not been observed. The pitch of the helix has been measured in all of the twisted smectic phases, including the SJ* phase. The existence of the helix in this phase suggests that the correlations between smectic layers are not very strong.  相似文献

An achiral semiperfluorinated chain has been introduced into classical phenyl benzoate mesogenic moieties in which the other terminal chain is chiral. The consequences of this modification on the mesomorphic properties are discussed. At a low fluorination extent, the smectic A phase is strongly favoured, while at high extents of fluorination the chiral smectic C phase is enhanced. The direction of the central ester linkage influences not only the phase diagram, but also the spontaneous polarization induction power.  相似文献

The syntheses of two side chain liquid crystal polymers, a polyacrylate and a polymethacrylate, are reported. In each of the polymers the liquid-crystalline side group carries an asymmetric carbon atom, thereby making some of the liquid crystal phases formed by the polymers optically active and chiral. For the chiral polyacrylate smectic A and chiral ferroelectric smectic C phases are observed, however for the chiral polymethacrylate a cholesteric phase is detected above the smectic A phase. It is found that the smectic A to cholesteric phase transition is mediated by the formation of an intermediary twisted smectic A phase. This intermediary phase is a liquid-crystalline analogue of the Abrikosov flux phase found in Type II superconductors.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of three homologous series of compounds exhibiting the undulated twist grain boundary smectic C* (UTGBC*) phase are reported. The chiral mesophases have been obtained using cholesterol as the chiral moiety. Cholestanol and [S]-[+]-octan-2-ol have also been used as the chiral moiety for comparitive purposes. In addition to this novel phase, cholesteric, smectic A, smectic C* and TGBA phases have also been observed. The mesophases were characterized using a combination of polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and measurement of helical pitch.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of the nematic electroclinic effect has been studied in binary mixtures prepared from two chiral compounds with nematic-smectic A-smectic C and nematic-smectic C phase sequences. The data obtained show a substantial difference in the magnitude of the effect, not only with the type of phase sequence, but also with the temperature range of the subsequent smectic A phase. These results suggest that short-range smectic fluctuations can play an important role in the nematic electroclinic effect at least when a smectic C phase is close to the nematic. In addition, the dynamic behaviour of the electroclinic effect has been investigated in the compound with the nematic-smectic A transition. As in previous work, an anomaly in the electroclinic response time has been found around the nematic-smectic A transition. This fact is analysed qualitatively assuming two different mechanisms contributing to the electroclinic effect.  相似文献

A new series of materials with a chiral fragment derived from lactic acid and a methoxy group as lateral substituent in different positions of the molecular core was synthesised and investigated. Derivatives with ester or ether linkages of the non‐chiral chain were also studied. Depending on the molecular structure, cholesteric, twist grain boundary smectic A (TGBA*), chiral smectic A (SmA*) or chiral smectic C (SmC*) phases were detected. In derivatives with the ester linkage and a methoxy group at the nearest and the next nearest phenyl ring to the non‐chiral chain these phases completely disappear. On the other hand, a methoxy group on the phenyl ring close to the chiral chain provides a compound with low layer shrinkage at the SmA*–SmC* phase transition (“de Vries” behaviour). The temperature dependence of the spontaneous polarisation, the tilt angle, the layer spacing as well as the complex permittivity were studied and the results discussed in terms of molecular structure.  相似文献

The chiral structure of the anomalous smectic phase recently observed in chiral copolymers has been studied by optical methods. The phase is amorphous, but shows a short range order, as a combination of smectic A and cholesteric structures. This phase is presumed to possess locally the TGBA structure.  相似文献

A new phase sequence: twist grain boundary smectic C (TGBC) to smectic blue phases (BPSm) is observed in a chiral compound (S)- or (R)-1-methyloctyl 3'-fluoro-4'-(3-fluoro-4-hexadecyloxybenzoyloxy)tolane-4-carboxylate. It is the first time that a TGBC phase has been found to occur under smectic blue phases in the absence of the twist grain boundary smectic A (TGBA) phase. These phases are characterized by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray scattering.  相似文献

A novel chiral twin material, (R)-bis[5-octyloxy-2-(4-octyloxyphenoxycarbonyl)phenyl] 3-methyladipate, has been prepared, where two mesogenic parts are connected laterally by a spacer possessing a chiral centre. A weaker helical structure, in particular in the chiral smectic C (S*c) phase, was found to be induced by the laterally-connected twin material than by the analogous terminally-connected twin material. If laterally-connected chiral twin molecules prefer to stay in the smectic layer structure so that the two mesogenic parts exist in the same smectic layer, the twist interaction between adjacent layers cannot be produced by direct correlation of motion and directions of two mesogenic parts. Thus, the helical structure in the S*c phase induced by laterally-connected chiral twin molecules becomes weak. An analogous laterally-branched 'monomeric' compound, (S)-5-octyloxy-2-(4-octyloxyphenoxycarbonyl)phenyl 3-methyl-pentanoate, has also been prepared, and the induced helical structures compared.  相似文献

The critical behaviour of the electroclinic response in the chiral smectic A* phase in the vicinity of the second-order smectic A* to smectic C* phase-transition temperature has been investigated using a new electro-optic technique. The temperature variation of the electroclinic coefficient, the relaxation frequency and the coefficient of the quartic term in the tilt angle in the Landau free energy expansion have been studied. The electroclinic coefficient diverges with decreasing temperature as the smectic A* to smectic C* phase-transition temperature is approached with a critical exponent, as predicted in the mean field Landau theory. The measured quartic coefficient varies strongly with temperature, contrary to the usual assumptions of the mean field Landau theory.  相似文献

The influence of spontaneous polarization on the smectic C*-smectic A* phase transition was studied theoretically by means of Landau theory. calculations that the transition temperature from a non-chiral to chiral smectic C phase is shifted due to the effect of bilinear and biquadratic couplings. A qualitative relationship has also been derived between spontaneous polarization and cell thickness which supports the experimental observations of the increase of spontaneous polarization with the increase of cell thickness for surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystals. It was observed from the theoretical  相似文献
