Summary Consider a stationary process {X n(), – < n < . If the measure of the process is finite (the measure of the whole sample space finite), it is well known that ergodicity of the process {X n(), - < n < and of each of the subprocesses {X n(), 0 n < , {X n(), – < n 0 are equivalent (see [3]). We shall show that this is generally not true for stationary processes with a sigma-finite measure, specifically for stationary irreducible transient Markov chains. An example of a stationary irreducible transient Markov chain {X n(), - < n <} with {itXn(), 0 n < < ergodic but {X n(), < n 0 nonergodic is given. That this can be the case has already been implicitly indicated in the literature [4]. Another example of a stationary irreducible transient Markov chain with both {X n(), 0 n < and {itX n(),-< < n 0} ergodic but {X n(), - < n < nonergodic is presented. We study the limiting behavior of the weighted central paths{(x(), s())} > 0 in linear programming at both = 0 and = . We establish the existence of a partition (B ,N ) of the index set { 1, ,n } such thatx i() ands j () as fori B , andj N , andx N (),s B () converge to weighted analytic centers of certain polytopes. For allk 1, we show that thekth order derivativesx (k) () ands (k) () converge when 0 and . Consequently, the derivatives of each order are bounded in the interval (0, ). We obtain outer rates of clustering in the functional laws of the iterated logarithm of Deheuvels and Mason(11) and Deheuvels,(7) which describe local oscillations of empirical processes. Considering increment sizes a n 0 such that na n and na n(log n)–7/3 we show that the sets of properly rescaled increment functions cluster with probability one to the n-enlarged Strassen ball in B(0, 1) endowed with the uniform topology, where n 0 may be chosen so small as (log (1/a n) + log log n)–2/3 for any sufficiently large . Zusammenfassung Es wird eine semi-analytische Methode (S /0) zur Lösung der monoenergetischen Transportgleichung entwickelt. Diese Methode wird mit der bekanntenS 1 -Methode verglichen. Bei Anwendung letzterer auf Reaktorabschirmungen können negative Flüsse vorkommen. Dieser unphysikalische Effekt wird durch die neue Methode vollständig vermieden. Numerische Ergebnisse zeigen die Begrenzungen der Anwendbarkeit vonS 1 und bestätigen die numerische Stabilität vonS 0 .
A semianalytic method (S 0 ) is presented for solving the monoenergetic multi-region transport equation. This method is compared with results fromS 1 -theory given in the literature. Application ofS 1 -theory to reactor shields may lead to negative neutron fluxes and to flux oscillations. These unphysical effects are completely avoided by the new method. Numerical results demonstrate the limitation ofS 1 and confirm the numerical stability ofS 0 .

Summary Let T be an infinite homogeneous tree of order a+1. We study Markov chains {X n} in T whose transition functions p(x, y)=A[d(x,y)] depend only on the shortest distance between x and y in the graph. The graph T can be represented as a symmetric space of a p-adic matrix group; we prove a series of results using essentially the spherical functions of this symmetric space. Theorem 1. d(X n,x) n a.s., where >0 if A(0) 1, X 0=x. Assuming {X n} is strongly aperiodic, Theorem 2. p 2(x, y)CRn/n3/2 for fixed x, y where R=(d) A(d)<1, and if E[d(X1, X0)2]<, Theorem 3. R(1–u, x, y) = (1–u)npn(x, y)=Ca–d[exp(–du/)+od(1)] as d=d(x,y) uniformly for 0u2. Using Theorem 3, we calculate the Martin boundary Dirichlet kernel of p(x, y) on T, which turns out to be independent of {itA(d)}. We also consider a stepping-stone model of a randomly-mating-and-migrating population on the nodes of T. This, in particular, implies the strong Markov property of quantum Brownian motion in the boson as well as fermion sense and the Dynkin-Hunt property that the classical Brownian motion begins afresh at each stop time. The stopped Weyl and fermion processes are defined and their properties studied. A composition operation is introduced in the space of stop time to make it a semigroup.
