Edge fracture is an instability of cone-plate and parallel plate flows of viscoelastic liquids and suspensions, characterised by the formation of a `crack' or indentation at a critical shear rate on the free surface of the liquid. A study is undertaken of the theoretical, experimental and computational aspects of edge fracture. The Tanner-Keentok theory of edge fracture in second-order liquids is re-examined and is approximately extended to cover the Criminale-Ericksen-Filbey (CEF) model. The second-order theory shows that the stress distribution on the semi-circular crack is not constant, requiring an average to be taken of the stress; this affects the proportionality constant, K in the edge fracture equation −N 2c = KΓ/a, where N 2c is the critical second normal stress difference, Γ is the surface tension coefficient and a is the fracture diameter. When the minimum stress is used, K = 2/3 as found by Tanner and Keentok (1983). Consideration is given to the sources of experimental error, including secondary flow and slip (wall effect). The effect of inertia on edge fracture is derived. A video camera was used to record the inception and development of edge fracture in four viscoelastic liquids and two suspensions. The recorded image was then measured to obtain the fracture diameter. The edge fracture phenomenon was examined to find its dependence on the physical dimensions of the flow (i.e. parallel plate gap or cone angle), on the surface tension coefficient, on the critical shear rate and on the critical second normal stress difference. The critical second normal stress difference was found to depend on the surface tension coefficient and the fracture diameter, as shown by the theory of Tanner and Keentok (1983); however, the experimental data were best fitted by the equation −N 2c = 1.095Γ/a. It was found that edge fracture in viscoelastic liquids depends on the Reynolds number, which is in good agreement with the inertial theory of edge fracture. Edge fracture in lubricating grease and toothpaste is broadly consistent with the CEF model of edge fracture. A finite volume method program was used to simulate the flow of a viscoelastic liquid, obeying the modified Phan-Thien-Tanner model, to obtain the velocity and stress distribution in parallel plate flow in three dimensions. Stress concentrations of the second normal stress difference (N 2) were found in the plane of the crack; the velocity distribution shows a secondary flow tending to aid crack formation if N 2 is negative, and a secondary flow tending to suppress crack formation if N 2 is positive. Using a piezo rotary and axial vibrator (PRAV) the viscoelastic properties of a fresh Al2O3 coating that is deposited on a well-chosen plate can be measured simultaneously during drying. There are three types of vibrations available to be excited and detected in their resonance modes, by measuring resonance frequencies f k and half-widths h k, before and after coating as a function of time: axial vibration, bending vibration to get the evolving Young’s modulus and rotary vibration to follow the viscosity increase during drying of the thin coating. This information is contained in the complex frequency shifts Ωk = 2Δf k /f k + iΔh k /f k of the three vibration modes caused by the coating on the plate. A derivation of the relationships, their validation on Newtonian liquids and experimental applications carried out using the PRAV are given in the paper.  相似文献

The mean value theorem of integral calculus guarantees that the apparent viscosity η a can easily be converted into the correct viscosity η. For ordinary liquids there is a direct identity between η a and η but the apparent shear rate (or apparent shear stress) has to be shifted to the representative shear rate γ˙^ (or representative shear stress τ^). A model free approximation scheme is introduced which implies a constant shift factor. The corresponding approximation for η is acceptable for liquids most commonly encountered. For plastic fluids the relation between η and η a is more complex since it involves a function depending upon α; the yield stress relative to the maximum stress within the viscometer. Using the same approximation scheme as before the shift factor will involve α as well. The corresponding approximation of η is shown to be acceptable for the whole range of α. Summary The chief purpose of the present investigation is the measurement and analysis of the microwave dispersion of some polar liquids. An outline of the problem and a historical survey of experimental work on the dielectric behaviour of polar liquids are given in Chapter I. A number of theoretical expressions for the dielectric constant in the static case and their extension to alternating fields are reviewed in Chapter II. A formula for the dielectric dispersion in liquids composed of ellipsoidal molecules is derived and its consequences are investigated. Chapter III deals with the experimental details of the investigation. A new microwave measuring technique is described, accurate in most cases to about 1% for both the real and imaginary part of ε. In order to make the theories applicable, the investigation has been restricted mainly to polar liquids of simple structure, in particular to the mono-substituted benzenes. The results refer to wavelengths down to 0.8 cm. The analysis of our measurements in Chapter IV reveals discrepancies between the dielectric constantɛ , extrapolated from the side of cm-waves, andn 2, the square of the refractive index, extrapolated from measurements in the visible and infrared. This leads to assuming an additional region of dipolar absorption in the neighbourhood of 1 mm. The mechanism to which such an absorption may be due is sought in the strong local fields exerted on a molecule by its immediate neighbours.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulation of a turbulent reactive jet with and without evaporating droplets is performed to investigate the interactions among turbulence, combustion, heat transfer and evaporation. A hybrid Eulerian–Lagrangian approach is used for the gas–liquid flow system. Arrhenius-type finite-rate chemistry is employed for the chemical reaction. To capture the highly local interactions, dynamic procedures are used for all the subgrid-scale models, except that the filtered reaction rate is modelled by a scale similarity model. Various representative cases with different initial droplet sizes (St 0) and mass loading ratios (MLR) have been simulated, along with a case without droplets. It is found that compared with the bigger, slow responding droplets (St 0 = 16), smaller droplets (St 0 = 1) are more efficient in suppressing combustion due to their preferential concentration in the reaction zones. The peak temperature and intensity of temperature fluctuations are found to be reduced in all the droplet cases, to a varying extent depending on the droplet properties. Detailed analysis on the contributions of respective terms in a transport equation for grid-scale kinetic energy (GSKE) shows that the droplet evaporation effect on GSKE is small, while the droplet momentum effect depends on St 0. When the MLR is sufficiently high, the bigger (St 0 = 16) droplets can have profound influence on GSKE, and consequently on the formation and evolution of large-scale flow structures. On the other hand, the turbulence level is found to be lower in the droplet cases than in the pure flame case, due to the dissipative droplet dynamic effect.  相似文献

Results of an experimental investigation of the characteristics of a separation region induced by the interaction of an externally generated oblique shock with the turbulent boundary layer formed in a rectangular half channel are discussed. The experiments were carried out in the supersonic wind tunnel of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics SB RAS at a free-stream Mach number M =3.01 over a range of Reynolds numbers Re 1=(9.7–47.5)×106 m-1 and at zero incidence and zero yaw of the model. Particular attention is paid to the size of the zone of the upstream propagation of disturbances (upstream influence region) under different experimental conditions: with varied values of the shock wave strength, half channel width, and Reynolds number. It is shown, in particular, that the normalized upstream influence region length as a function of inclination angle of the shock generator in a rectangular half channel is readily approximated by a simple exponential function. In support of the known reference data obtained for supersonic numbers M and moderate Re in other configurations, it is also shown that the upstream influence region length decreases with increasing Reynolds number. Generalization of experimental data on the length of the upstream influence region formed in similar geometric configurations is possible using an additional reference linear scale which is the distance from the leading edge of the shock generator to the exposed surface. A substantial dependence of the reference dimensions of separation region on the half channel width is also established. Received: 20 January 1997/Accepted: 30 June 1997  相似文献

PIV observations in a shear layer have been used to identify and characterize the discrete large-scale coherent motions (LSCMs) in the nominally self-preserving region: xo ≈ 450–610, of a shear layer. The LSCMs are given an objective definition wherein their centers are the (swirling flow pattern) nodes of the velocity-vector field as seen by an observer in the Galilean reference frame translating at an appropriately defined reference velocity. The statistical attributes of size, lateral location, and separation between these coherent motions (that exist in a single image) as well as their characteristic vorticity magnitude 〈ωmax〉 are reported.  相似文献

Steady-state and dynamic experiments have been performed on solutions containing cellulose dissolved in monohydrate of N-methylmorpholine N-oxide (NMMO). The dependence of the zero-shear viscosity η0, and of the terminal relaxation time τ c , on concentration, average degree of polymerization (DP) and temperature are discussed. The behavior of this semi-rigid, polymolecular polymer in solution differs from that of flexible monodisperse ones. The slope of the plot of log(η0) versus, on the one hand, log(c) at fixed molecular weight (DP)=600, and, on the other hand, log(DP) at fixed concentration (c=5%w/w) are equal to 4.6 and 5 respectively, instead of 3.4 in the concentrated region. Experimental data for the shear modulus were fitted using the classical Doi-Edwards equation with a log normal distribution of relaxation time. This distribution is compared to the distribution of DP. Received: 25 February1997 Accepted: 30 December 1997  相似文献

A study of the errors in out-of-plane vorticity (ω z ) calculated using a local χ2 fitting of the measured velocity field and analytic differentiation has been carried out. The primary factors of spatial velocity sampling separation and random velocity measurement error have been investigated. In principle the ω z error can be decomposed into a bias error contribution and a random error contribution. Theoretical expressions for the transmission of the random velocity error into the random vorticity error have been derived. The velocity and vorticity field of the Oseen vortex has been used as a typical vortex structure in this study. Data of different quality, ranging from exact velocity vectors of analytically defined flow fields (Oseen vortex flow) sampled at discrete locations to computer generated digital image frames analysed using cross-correlation DPIV, have been investigated in this study. This data has been used to provide support for the theoretical random error results, to isolate the different sources of error and to determine their effect on ω z measurements. A method for estimating in-situ the velocity random error is presented. This estimate coupled with the theoretically derived random error transmission results for the χ2 vorticity calculation method can be used a priori to estimate the magnitude of the random error in ω z . This random error is independent of a particular flow field. The velocity sampling separation is found to have a profound effect on the precise determination of ω z by introducing a bias error. This bias error results in an underestimation of the peak vorticity. Simple equations, which are based on a local model of the Oseen vortex around the peak vorticity region, allowing the prediction of the ω z bias error for the χ2 vorticity calculation method, are presented. An important conclusion of this study is that the random error transmission factor and the bias error cannot be minimised simultaneously. Both depend on the velocity sampling separation, but with opposing effects. The application of the random and bias vorticity error predictions are illustrated by application to experimental velocity data determined using cross-correlation DPIV (CCDPIV) analysis of digital images of a laminar vortex ring. Linear viscoelastic (LVE) measurements as well as non-linear elongation measurements have been performed on stoichiometrically imbalanced polymeric networks to gain insight into the structural influence on the rheological response (Jensen et al., Rheol Acta 49(1):1–13, 2010). In particular, we seek knowledge about the effect of dangling ends and soluble structures. To interpret our recent experimental results, we exploit a molecular model that can predict LVE data and non-linear stress–strain data. The slip-link model has proven to be a robust tool for both LVE and non-linear stress–strain predictions for linear chains (Khaliullin and Schieber, Phys Rev Lett 100(18):188302–188304, 2008, Macromolecules 42(19):7504–7517, 2009; Schieber, J Chem Phys 118(11):5162–5166, 2003), and it is thus used to analyze the experimental results. Initially, we consider a stoichiometrically balanced network, i.e., all strands in the ensemble are attached to the network in both ends. Next we add dangling strands to the network representing the stoichiometric imbalance, or imperfections during curing. By considering monodisperse network strands without dangling ends, we find that the relative low-frequency plateau, G0/GN0G_0/G_N^0, decreases linearly with the average number of entanglements. The decrease from GN0G_N^0 to G 0 is a result of monomer fluctuations between entanglements, which is similar to “longitudinal modes” in tube theory. It is found that the slope of G′ is dependent on the fraction of network strands and the structural distribution of the network. The power-law behavior of G is not yet captured quantitatively by the model, but our results suggest that it is a result of polydisperse dangling and soluble structures.  相似文献

In dense two-phase flows, it is well known that phase Doppler anemometry is not well suited for the measurement of concentration and mass flux. Laser diagnostics based on fluorescence can provide the dispersed phase concentration but without discrimination between size classes. We present a new method of coupling the two techniques, in order to extract the local value of concentration and flux per size class. The method is applied to an axisymmetric turbulent jet, laden with polydispersed droplets 1–90 μm. Droplet concentration profiles are obtained in the development zone (x/d 0 < 20) of the dense jet and are used to study droplet dispersion. The results are then introduced into the momentum transport equations to analyze the influence of droplets on the carrier phase. We show that the local decrease of the rate of variation of mean momentum with mass loading is due both to an increase in interfacial transfer rate and to a decrease in turbulent diffusion effects. The relationship between particle size distribution and viscosity of concentrated dispersions is of great industrial importance, since it is the key to get high solids dispersions or suspensions. The problem is treated here experimentally as well as theoretically for the special case of strongly interacting colloidal particles. An empirical model based on a generalized Quemada equation is used to describe η as a function of volume fraction for mono- as well as multimodal dispersions. The pre-factor η˜ accounts for the shear rate dependence of η and does not affect the shape of the η vs φ curves. It is shown here for the first time that colloidal interactions do not show up in the maximum packing parameter and φmax can be calculated from the particle size distribution without further knowledge of the interactions among the suspended particles. On the other hand, the exponent ɛ is controlled by the interactions among the particles. Starting from a limiting value of 2 for non-interacting either colloidal or non-colloidal particles, ɛ generally increases strongly with decreasing particle size. For a given particle system it then can be expressed as a function of the number average particle diameter. As a consequence, the viscosity of bimodal dispersions varies not only with the size ratio of large to small particles, but also depends on the absolute particle size going through a minimum as the size ratio increases. Furthermore, the well-known viscosity minimum for bimodal dispersions with volumetric mixing ratios of around 30/70 of small to large particles is shown to vanish if colloidal interactions contribute significantly.  Hot-wire measurements have been carried out in the turbulent flow around a rotating circular cylinder in still air for Reynolds numbers Re=∣U w D/ν=1.5×104 to 105. The experimental results confirm the analysis derived by asymptotic theory for high Reynolds numbers. Two different ways of deriving the friction law from the experiments (via shear stress and via velocity distribution) resulted practically in the same law. It is shown, that in spite of the curvature of the streamlines the universal logarithmic velocity distribution is still valid near the wall. Received: 8 August 1996/Accepted: 24 April 1998  相似文献

Experiments have been carried out to determine the dependence of the detonation velocity in porous media, on mixture sensitivity and pore size. A detonation is established at the top end of a vertical tube and allowed to propagate to the bottom section housing the porous bed, comprised of alumina spheres of equal diameter (1–32 mm). Several of the common detonable fuels were tested at atmospheric initial pressure. Results indicate the existence of a continuous range of velocities with change in Φ, spanning the lean and the rich propagation limits. For all fuels in a given porous bed, the velocity decreases from a maximum value at the most sensitive mixture near Φ≈1 (minimum induction length), toV/V CJ≈0.3 at the limits. A decrease in pore size brings about a reduction inV/V CJ and a narrowing of the detonability range for each fuel. For porous media comprised of spherical particles, it was possible to correlate the velocity data corresponding to a variety of different mixtures and for a broad range of particle sizes, using the following empirical expression:V/V CJ=[1–0.35 log(d c /d p)]±0.1. The critical tube diameterd c is used as a measure of mixture sensitivity andd p denotes the pore diameter. An examination of the phenomenon at the composition limits, suggests that wave failure is controlled by a turbulent quenching mechanism.  相似文献

Rheological analysis of highly concentrated w/o emulsions   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A series of highly concentrated lipophilic cosmetic emulsions were analysed, in order to determine their rheological and textural properties, as a function of their microstructure. The originality of this study lies in the methodology used, especially the shear-stress scanning analysis. The results of a very powerful and comprehensive dynamic rheological analysis suggest the existence of two critical volume fraction values: besides the “close-packed” value φ c , a “slack-packed” value φ0, close to 0.60 could be demonstrated. It has been shown that the close-packed structure is stable under shear; in constrast, the slack-packed configuration, defined as φ0<φ<φ c is unstable under shear. A comparison with theoretical models, especially that of Princen, showed good agreement and allowed the close-packed value φ c to be defined more precisely as 0.67. The gap between 0.67 and 0.74 is probably indicative of a highly polydisperse distribution, as confirmed by microscopic analysis. Flow experiments confirmed the validity of Princen‘s model. Nonlinear rheology was examined for concentrated suspensions of spherical silica particles (with radius of 40 nm) in viscous media, 2.27/1 (wt/wt) ethylene glycol/glycerol mixture and pure ethylene glycol. The particles were randomly and isotropically dispersed in the media in the quiescent state, and their effective volume fraction φeff ranged from 0.36 to 0.59. For small strains, the particles exhibited linear relaxation of the Brownian stress σB due to their diffusion. For large step strains γ, the nonlinear relaxation modulus G(t,γ) exhibited strong damping and obeyed the time-strain separability. This damping was related to γ-insensitivity of strain-induced anisotropy in the particle distribution that resulted in decreases of σB/γ. The damping became stronger for larger φeff. This φeff dependence was related to a hard-core volume effect, i.e., strain-induced collision of the particles that is enhanced for larger φeff. Under steady/transient shear flow, the particles exhibited thinning and thickening at low and high γ˙, respectively. The thinning behavior was well described by a BKZ constitutive equation using the G(t,γ) data and attributable to decreases of a Brownian contribution, σB/γ˙. The thickening behavior, not described by this equation, was related to dynamic clustering of the particles and corresponding enhancement of the hydrodynamic stress at high γ˙. In this thickening regime, the viscosity growth η+ after start-up of flow was scaled with a strain γ˙t. Specifically, critical strains γd and γs for the onset of thickening and achievement of the steadily thickened state were independent of γ˙ but decreased with increasing φeff. This φeff dependence was again related to the hard-core volume effect, flow-induced collision of the particles enhanced for larger φeff. Received: 26 June 1998 Accepted: 9 December 1998  相似文献

The influence of inert and chemically reactive additives in the form of microdrops on the dynamics of a single bubble filled with an active gas mixture and collapsing under the action of a shock wave is considered. The development of a reaction during formation of the mixture is analyzed for instantaneous and dynamic evaporation of drops with allowance for various phases of their injection t inj . It is shown that in instantaneous evaporation, an increase in the fraction of gaseous argon in the H2+O2 system raises the final temperature of the system under cryogenic conditions, lowers it under ordinary conditions, and causes appreciable oscillations of the values of γ, heat release, and molecular weight. It is noted that there are values of t inj and D0 at which the final temperature of the mixture decreases practically to the initial temperature. In this paper the influence of temperature on velocity signal in hot-wire measurement of turbulence is analysed. It is pointed out that when the temperature influence is small, the temperature influence on measured intensity of velocity fluctuations is second order small and negligible. However, the temperature influence on measuring longitudinal heat flux is of first order quantity, and must be corrected, or large error will occur. The method to correct the temperature influence on measuring ρ θu and the procedure to decide experimentally temperature influence coefficient have been given.  相似文献

Particle tracer response across shocks measured by PIV   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The experimental approach used for the evaluation of the particle response time across a stationary shock wave is assessed by means of PIV measurements. The study focuses on the experimental requirements for a reliable and unbiased measurement of the particle response time τ p and length ξ p based on a single-exponent decaying law. A numerical simulation of the particle response experiment returns the parameters governing the measurement: namely the normalized spatial and temporal resolution, shock strength, and digital resolution. Representing the velocity decay in logarithmic coordinates it is shown that measurements performed with laser pulse separation time up to τ p and interrogation window up to ξ p still yield unbiased results for the particle response. A set of experiments on the particle response across a planar oblique shock wave was conducted to verify the results from the numerical assessment. Liquid droplets of DEHS and solid tracer particles of silicon and titanium dioxide with different primary crystal size are compared. The resulting temporal response ranges from 2 to 3 μs, corresponding to values commonly reported in literature, to almost 0.3 μs when particles are properly dehydrated and a filter is applied before injection into the wind tunnel. It is the first experimental evidence of particle tracers with a measured response time lower than 0.4 μs. The same procedure is applied to attempt the measurement of individual particle tracers by particle tracking velocimetry to estimate the spread in the distribution of tracer time response. The latter analysis is limited by the particle image tracking precision error, which biases the results introducing a wider broadening of the particle velocity distribution.  相似文献
