The kernel gradient free (KGF) smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is a modified finite particle method (FPM) which has higher order accuracy than the conventional SPH method. In KGF‐SPH, no kernel gradient is required in the whole computation, and this leads to good flexibility in the selection of smoothing functions and it is also associated with a symmetric corrective matrix. When modeling viscous incompressible flows with SPH, FPM or KGF‐SPH, it is usual to approximate the Laplacian term with nested approximation on velocity, and this may introduce numerical errors from the nested approximation, and also cause difficulties in dealing with boundary conditions. In this paper, an improved KGF‐SPH method is presented for modeling viscous, incompressible fluid flows with a novel discrete scheme of Laplacian operator. The improved KGF‐SPH method avoids nested approximation of first order derivatives, and keeps the good feature of ‘kernel gradient free’. The two‐dimensional incompressible fluid flow of shear cavity, both in Euler frame and Lagrangian frame, are simulated by SPH, FPM, the original KGF‐SPH and improved KGF‐SPH. The numerical results show that the improved KGF‐SPH with the novel discrete scheme of Laplacian operator are more accurate than SPH, and more stable than FPM and the original KGF‐SPH. A hybrid particle‐mesh method was developed for efficient and accurate simulations of two‐phase flows. In this method, the main component of the flow is solved using the constrained interpolated profile/multi‐moment finite volumemethod; the two‐phase interface is rendered using the finite volume particle (FVP) method. The effect of surface tension is evaluated using the continuum surface force model. Numerical particles in the FVP method are distributed only on the surface of the liquid in simulating the interface between liquid and gas; these particles are used to determine the density of each mesh grid. An artificial term was also introduced to mitigate particle clustering in the direction of maximum compression and sparse discretization errors in the stretched direction. This enables accurate interface tracking without diminishing numerical efficiency. Two benchmark simulations are used to demonstrate the validity of the method developed and its numerical stability. In this study, two corrective gradient models (CGMs) are compared in the simulation of multiphase flows. Linear consistency of the gradient model of moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method has been recovered by introducing corrective matrix. However, it is found that particles tend to disperse along the streamline while using the CGM proposed in a previous study. Particle shifting (PS) schemes are necessary to reduce the irregularity of particle distribution to stabilize the calculation. To enhance the accuracy and stability, another CGM with dummy particle (CGMD) was proposed in our previous study. This enhanced CGM is featured by linear consistency and purely repulsive pressure gradient force. In this study, this enhanced CGM is modified and applied to multiphase flow simulation. Comparative study suggests that the modified CGM with PS scheme is capable of calculating various multiphase flows and predicting the interface evolution both clearly and accurately.  相似文献

The use of the finite volume particle (FVP) method is validated for three‐dimensional sloshing dynamics with a free surface by comparing with results from experiments. In the first part, two typical sloshing experiments for a single liquid phase are simulated, and slosh characteristics that include the free surface behavior and hydrodynamic pressure are reported. Moreover, the influences of the circular wall geometry and spatial resolution in the simulation are studied in a sensitivity analysis. In the second part, two sloshing problems with solid bodies are simulated to preliminarily verify the applicability of the FVP method to three‐dimensional solid bodies' motion in liquid flow. Good agreement between simulations and corresponding experiments indicates that the present FVP method well reproduces three‐dimensional sloshing behavior. A two-fluid model of gas–solid particle flows that is valid for a wide range of the solid-phase volume concentration (dilute to dense) is presented. The governing equations of the fluid phase are obtained by volume averaging the Navier–Stokes equations for an incompressible fluid. The solid-phase macroscopic equations are derived using an approach that is based on the kinetic theory of dense gases. This approach accounts for particle–particle collisions. The model is implemented in a control-volume finite element method for simulations of the flows of interest in two-dimensional, planar or axisymmetric, domains. The chosen mathematical model and the proposed numerical method are applied to three test problems and one demonstration problem. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A mesh‐free particle method, based on the moving particle semi‐implicit (MPS) interaction model, has been developed for the simulation of two‐dimensional open‐boundary free‐surface flows. The incompressibility model in the original MPS has been replaced with a weakly incompressible model. The effect of this replacement on the efficiency and accuracy of the model has been investigated. The new inflow–outflow boundary conditions along with the particle recycling strategy proposed in this study extend the application of the model to open‐boundary problems. The final model is able to simulate open‐boundary free surface flow in cases of large deformation and fragmentation of free surface. The models and proposed algorithms have been validated and applied to sample problems. The results confirm the model's efficiency and accuracy. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new algorithm for the surface tension model was developed for moving particle methods. The algorithm is based on the link‐list search algorithm and the continuum surface tension (CST) model. The developed algorithm with the CST model was implemented to a kind of moving particle approach, the finite volume particle (FVP) method. The FVP method with the new algorithm was tested by oscillatory behaviour of a two‐dimensional droplet. The oscillatory period agrees well with analytical one, and the transient shape of the droplet is also in good agreement with that obtained by other numerical methods. The droplet impact on a liquid surface was also studied using the new algorithm. The deposition and splashing phenomena were clearly reproduced. Simulated spread radius of the splashing phenomena was consistent with a power law. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A hybrid approach to couple finite difference method (FDM) with finite particle method (FPM) (ie, FDM-FPM) is developed to simulate viscous incompressible flows. FDM is a grid-based method that is convenient for implementing multiple or adaptive resolutions and is computationally efficient. FPM is an improved smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), which is widely used in modeling fluid flows with free surfaces and complex boundaries. The proposed FDM-FPM leverages their advantages and is appealing in modeling viscous incompressible flows to balance accuracy and efficiency. In order to exchange the interface information between FDM and FPM for achieving consistency, stability, and convergence, a transition region is created in the particle region to maintain the stability of the interface between two methods. The mass flux algorithm is defined to control the particle creation and deletion. The mass is updated by N-S equations instead of the interpolation. In order to allow information exchange, an overlapping zone is defined near the interface. The information of overlapping zone is obtained by an FPM-type interpolation. Taylor-Green vortices and lid-driven shear cavity flows are simulated to test the accuracy and the conservation of the FDM-FPM hybrid approach. The standing waves and flows around NACA airfoils are further simulated to test the ability to deal with free surfaces and complex boundaries. The results show that FDM-FPM retains not only the high efficiency of FDM with multiple resolutions but also the ability of FPM in modeling free surfaces and complex boundaries.  相似文献

An improved incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ISPH) method is presented, which employs first‐order consistent discretization schemes both for the first‐order and second‐order spatial derivatives. A recently introduced wall boundary condition is implemented in the context of ISPH method, which does not rely on using dummy particles and, as a result, can be applied more efficiently and with less computational complexity. To assess the accuracy and computational efficiency of this improved ISPH method, a number of two‐dimensional incompressible laminar internal flow benchmark problems are solved and the results are compared with available analytical solutions and numerical data. It is shown that using smaller smoothing lengths, the proposed method can provide desirable accuracies with relatively less computational cost for two‐dimensional problems. In this paper, simple and consistent open boundary conditions are presented for the numerical simulation of viscous incompressible laminar flows. The present approach is based on an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian particle method using upwind interpolation. Three kinds of inlet/outlet boundary conditions are proposed for particle methods, a pressure specified inlet/outlet condition, a velocity profile specified inlet/outlet condition, and a fully developed flow outlet condition. These inlet/outlet conditions are realized by using boundary particles and modification to the physical value such as velocity. Poiseuille flows, flows over a backward-facing step, and flows in a T-shape branch are calculated. The results are compared with those of mesh-based methods such as the finite volume method. The method presented herein exhibits accuracy and numerical stability.  相似文献

In the present study, the preconditioned incompressible Navier‐Stokes equations with the artificial compressibility method formulated in the generalized curvilinear coordinates are numerically solved by using a high‐order compact finite‐difference scheme for accurately and efficiently computing the incompressible flows in a wide range of Reynolds numbers. A fourth‐order compact finite‐difference scheme is utilized to accurately discretize the spatial derivative terms of the governing equations, and the time integration is carried out based on the dual time‐stepping method. The capability of the proposed solution methodology for the computations of the steady and unsteady incompressible viscous flows from very low to high Reynolds numbers is investigated through the simulation of different 2‐dimensional benchmark problems, and the results obtained are compared with the existing analytical, numerical, and experimental data. A sensitivity analysis is also performed to evaluate the effects of the size of the computational domain and other numerical parameters on the accuracy and performance of the solution algorithm. The present solution procedure is also extended to 3 dimensions and applied for computing the incompressible flow over a sphere. Indications are that the application of the preconditioning in the solution algorithm together with the high‐order discretization method in the generalized curvilinear coordinates provides an accurate and robust solution method for simulating the incompressible flows over practical geometries in a wide range of Reynolds numbers including the creeping flows.  相似文献

A two-dimensional coupled lattice Boltzmann immersed boundary discrete element method is introduced for the simulation of polygonal particles moving in incompressible viscous fluids. A collision model of polygonal particles is used in the discrete element method. Instead of a collision model of circular particles, the collision model used in our method can deal with particles of more complex shape and efficiently simulate the effects of shape on particle–particle and particle–wall interactions. For two particles falling under gravity, because of the edges and corners, different collision patterns for circular and polygonal particles are found in our simulations. The complex vortexes generated near the corners of polygonal particles affect the flow field and lead to a difference in particle motions between circular and polygonal particles. For multiple particles falling under gravity, the polygonal particles easily become stuck owing to their corners and edges, while circular particles slip along contact areas. The present method provides an efficient approach for understanding the effects of particle shape on the dynamics of non-circular particles in fluids.  相似文献

This paper presents lattice Boltzmann Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook (LBGK) model and incompressible LBGK model‐based lattice Boltzmann flux solvers (LBFS) for simulation of incompressible flows. LBFS applies the finite volume method to directly discretize the governing differential equations recovered by lattice Boltzmann equations. The fluxes of LBFS at each cell interface are evaluated by local reconstruction of lattice Boltzmann solution. Because LBFS is applied locally at each cell interface independently, it removes the major drawbacks of conventional lattice Boltzmann method such as lattice uniformity, coupling between mesh spacing, and time interval. With LBGK and incompressible LBGK models, LBFS are examined by simulating decaying vortex flow, polar cavity flow, plane Poiseuille flow, Womersley flow, and double shear flows. The obtained numerical results show that both the LBGK and incompressible LBGK‐based LBFS have the second order of accuracy and high computational efficiency on nonuniform grids. Furthermore, LBFS with both LBGK models are also stable for the double shear flows at a high Reynolds number of 105. However, for the pressure‐driven plane Poiseuille flow, when the pressure gradient is increased, the relative error associated with LBGK model grows faster than that associated with incompressible LBGK model. It seems that the incompressible LBGK‐based LBFS is more suitable for simulating incompressible flows with large pressure gradients. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The moving particle semi‐implicit (MPS) method has been widely applied in free surface flows. However, the implementation of MPS remains limited because of compressive instability occurred when the particles are under compressive stress states. This study proposed an inter‐particle force stabilization and consistency restoring MPS (IFS‐CR‐MPS) method to overcome this numerical instability. For inter‐particle force stabilization, a hyperbolic‐shaped quintic kernel function is developed with a non‐negative and smooth second order derivative to satisfy the stability criterion under compressive stress state. Then, a contrastive study is conducted on the contradiction between the common understanding of the conventional MPS hyperbolic‐shaped kernel function and its performance. The result shows that the conventional MPS hyperbolic‐shaped kernel function can easily cause violent repulsive inter‐particle force and then lead to the compressive instability. Therefore, the first order derivative of the modified hyperbolic‐shaped quintic kernel function is recommended as the form of the contribution of the neighbor particles to achieve a more stable inter‐particle repulsive force. For consistency restoring, the Taylor series expansion and the hyperbolic‐shaped quintic kernel are combined to improve the accuracy of the viscosity and pressure calculation. The IFS‐CR‐MPS algorithm is subsequently verified by the inviscid hydrostatic pressure, jet impacting, and viscous droplet impacting problems. These results can be used for choosing kernel function and the contribution of neighbor particles in particle methods. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, a method that can be used to model low Reynolds number incompressible flows with curved boundaries using SPH was presented. In contrast to that usually used for the flows with flat and straight boundaries, the hydrostatic pressure gradient is treated as a variable body force in this method, and thus, it can be applied to simulate the flows with curved boundaries. Three numerical examples of low Reynolds number incompressible flows, including Poiseuille flow, flow in a section of blood vessel with a local expansion, and flow between inclined plates were calculated to test the method. The results obtained with the proposed method were in good agreement with the analytical solutions. It implies that the method presented in this paper can be successfully used to simulate low Reynolds number incompressible flows not only with flat and straight boundaries but also with curved boundaries. This is the second report on the development of a highly accurate interpolation method, which is called cubic interpolation with volume/area (CIVA) co‐ordinates, for mesh‐free flow simulations. In this paper, the method of determining the c‐parameter of CIVA using a constant curvature condition is first considered for the two‐ and three‐dimensional cases. A computation of a three‐dimensional passive scalar advection problem is performed for accuracy verification and for comparison with widely used methods. Then, an application algorithm of the CIVA method respecting incompressible fluid simulation is presented. As the incompressible condition based on Lagrangian approaches causes problems, in this paper we consider the condition based on the conventional Eulerian approach. The CIVA‐based incompressible flow simulation algorithm enables a highly accurate simulation of many kinds of problems that have complicated geometries and involve complicated phenomena. To confirm the facts, numerical analyzes are executed for some benchmark problems, namely flow in a square cavity, free surface sloshing and moving boundary problems in complex geometries. The results show that the method achieves high accuracy and has high flexibility, even for the flows involving high Reynolds number, complicated geometries, moving boundaries and free surfaces. Numerical methodologies for computer simulations of two‐fluid flows are presented. These methodologies fall into the category of volume tracking methods with piecewise‐linear interface calculation (PLIC). The scope of this work is limited to laminar flows of immiscible, non‐reacting, incompressible Newtonian fluids, without phase change, in planar two‐dimensional geometries. The following novel or enhanced procedures are proposed: a parallelogram scheme for multidimensional advection of the volume‐fraction field; a circle‐fit technique for the orientation of the interface segments and the calculation of curvature; a novel contact angle treatment; and a staggered formulation for volumetric body forces that can accurately balance pressure forces in the vicinity of the interface. In addition, surface‐tension‐derived and hydrostatic‐derived pressure adjustments are introduced as a means of accurately calculating pressure forces in cells that contain the interface, so as to minimize the non‐physical flows that afflict many available volume tracking methods. The proposed method is validated using four test problems that involve simulations of pure advection, a static drop, an oscillating bubble, and a static meniscus. A direct‐forcing pressure correction method is developed to simulate fluid–particle interaction problems. In this paper, the sedimentation flow is investigated. This method uses a pressure correction method to solve incompressible flow fields. A direct‐forcing method is introduced to capture the particle motions. It is found that the direct‐forcing method can also be served as a wall‐boundary condition. By applying Gauss's divergence theorem, the formulas for computing the hydrodynamic force and torque acting on the particle from flows are derived from the volume integral of the particle instead of the particle surface. The order of accuracy of the present method is demonstrated by the errors of velocity, pressure, and wall stress. To demonstrate the efficiency and capability of the present method, sedimentations of many spherical particles in an enclosure are simulated. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A coupled Lagrangian interface‐tracking and Eulerian level set (LS) method is developed and implemented for numerical simulations of two‐fluid flows. In this method, the interface is identified based on the locations of notional particles and the geometrical information concerning the interface and fluid properties, such as density and viscosity, are obtained from the LS function. The LS function maintains a signed distance function without an auxiliary equation via the particle‐based Lagrangian re‐initialization technique. To assess the new hybrid method, numerical simulations of several ‘standard interface‐moving’ problems and two‐fluid laminar and turbulent flows are conducted. The numerical results are evaluated by monitoring the mass conservation, the turbulence energy spectral density function and the consistency between Eulerian and Lagrangian components. The results of our analysis indicate that the hybrid particle‐level set method can handle interfaces with complex shape change, and can accurately predict the interface values without any significant (unphysical) mass loss or gain, even in a turbulent flow. The results obtained for isotropic turbulence by the new particle‐level set method are validated by comparison with those obtained by the ‘zero Mach number’, variable‐density method. For the cases with small thermal/mass diffusivity, both methods are found to generate similar results. Analysis of the vorticity and energy equations indicates that the destabilization effect of turbulence and the stability effect of surface tension on the interface motion are strongly dependent on the density and viscosity ratios of the fluids.
