K—very Smooth Banach Spaces

We introduce the notion of K-very smoothness which is a generalization of very smoothness in Banach spaces. A necessary and sufficient condition for a Banach space to be K-very smooth is obtained. We also consider some relations between K-very smoothness and other geometrical notions.

Nonsmooth Characterizations of Asplund Spaces and Smooth Variational Principles

We show that the Asplund property of Banach spaces is not only sufficient but also a necessary condition for the fulfillment of some basic results in nonsmooth analysis involving Fréchet-like normals and subdifferentials as well as their sequential limits. In this way we obtain new characterizations of Asplund spaces within the framework of nonsmooth analysis. Then we study several versions of smooth variational principles in Asplund spaces, provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the validity of such principles, and establish their relationships with certain subdifferential properties of lower semicontinuous functions.     

On Arc-Wise Essentially Smooth Mappings Between Banach Spaces

Recently, Borwein and Moors introduced a new class of real-valued locally Lipschitz functions, that are similar in nature and definition to Valadier's saine functions, which they called arc-wise essentially smooth. They showed that if g n M is an arc-wise essentially smooth real-valued function and f m M n is strictly differentiable almost everywhere, then g f m M is also strictly differentiable almost everywhere. They also showed that this class possesses strong closure properties. In this paper, we give an appropriate extension of this class to locally Lipschitz mappings defined between Banach spaces. We show that the results established by Borwein and Moors in the finite dimensional setting also hold for arc-wise essentially smooth mappings defined between Banach spaces.     

Fuzzy Perfect Mappings and Q-Compactness in Smooth Fuzzy Topological Spaces

We point out that the product of two fuzzy closed sets of smooth fuzzy topological spaces need not be fuzzy closed with respect to the the existing notion of product smooth fuzzy topology. To get this property, we introduce a new suitable product smooth fuzzy topology. We investigate whether $F_1\times F_2$ and $(F,H)$ are weakly smooth fuzzy continuity whenever $F_1$, $F_2$, $F$ and $H$ are weakly smooth fuzzy continuous. Using this new product smooth fuzzy topology, we define smooth fuzzy perfect mapping and prove that composition of two smooth fuzzy perfect mappings is smooth fuzzy perfect under some additional conditions. We also introduce two new notions of compactness called $Q$-compactness and $Q$-$\alpha$-compactness; and discuss the compactness of the image of a $Q$-compact set ($Q$-$\alpha$-compact set) under a weakly smooth fuzzy continuous function ($(\alpha ,\beta )$-weakly smooth fuzzy continuous function).

Two Characterizations of Smooth Norms

In an arbitrary Minkowski space M, n2, let there be given an arbitrary finite set P of weighted points whose affine hull is n-dimensional. We show that the unit ball B of M has smooth boundary if and only if each median hyperplane (minimizing the sum of weighted distances with respect to P) is spanned by n affinely independent points from P. Moreover, B has the same property if and only if every center hyperplane (minimizing the maximal weighted distance with respect to P) has the same maximal distance to at least n+1 affinely independent points from P.

Implicit Characterizations of Smooth Incidence Geometries

We give a characterization of smooth stable and smooth projective planes in terms of submersion and transversality. Moreover, smooth affine translation planes are characterized by properties of their corresponding spreads, considered as subsets of the Grassmannian. The last section contains smoothness results about spherical Moebius planes. In particular, we establish smoothness properties of the classical Moebius plane.
