We propose a stabilized finite element method for the approximation of the biharmonic equation with a clamped boundary condition. The mixed formulation of the biharmonic equation is obtained by introducing the gradient of the solution and a Lagrange multiplier as new unknowns. Working with a pair of bases forming a biorthogonal system, we can easily eliminate the gradient of the solution and the Lagrange multiplier from the saddle point system leading to a positive definite formulation. Using a superconvergence property of a gradient recovery operator, we prove an optimal a priori estimate for the finite element discretization for a class of meshes.  相似文献

In this paper we first establish a Lagrange multiplier condition characterizing a regularized Lagrangian duality for quadratic minimization problems with finitely many linear equality and quadratic inequality constraints, where the linear constraints are not relaxed in the regularized Lagrangian dual. In particular, in the case of a quadratic optimization problem with a single quadratic inequality constraint such as the linearly constrained trust-region problems, we show that the Slater constraint qualification (SCQ) is necessary and sufficient for the regularized Lagrangian duality in the sense that the regularized duality holds for each quadratic objective function over the constraints if and only if (SCQ) holds. A new theorem of the alternative for systems involving both equality constraints and two quadratic inequality constraints plays a key role. We also provide classes of quadratic programs, including a class of CDT-subproblems with linear equality constraints, where (SCQ) ensures regularized Lagrangian duality.  相似文献

We present new second order rectangular mixed finite elements for linear elasticity where the symmetry condition on the stress is imposed weakly with a Lagrange multiplier. The key idea in constructing the new finite elements is enhancing the stress space of the Awanou’s rectangular elements (rectangular Arnold–Falk–Winther elements) using bubble functions. The proposed elements have only 18 and 63 degrees of freedom for the stress in two and three dimensions, respectively, and they achieve the optimal second order convergence of errors for all the unknowns. We also present a new simple a priori error analysis and provide numerical results illustrating our analysis.  相似文献

Approximation of the Neumann problem for a second order elliptic operator by a fictitious domain method with a Lagrange multiplier on the boundary is considered. The problem is written in its vectorial dual formulation and H(div) mixed finite elements for the vector unknown and H1/2 conforming elements for the multiplier are used. Using a penalty function method, a Lagrange multiplier theorem in dual Banach spaces is proved. This theorem is applied to the optimal control of linear, autonomous time-delay systems with function space equality end condition and pointwise control restrictions. In the research of mathematical programming, duality theorems are essential and important elements. Recently, Lagrange duality theorems for separable convex programming have been studied. Tseng proves that there is no duality gap in Lagrange duality for separable convex programming without any qualifications. In other words, although the infimum value of the primal problem equals to the supremum value of the Lagrange dual problem, Lagrange multiplier does not always exist. Jeyakumar and Li prove that Lagrange multiplier always exists without any qualifications for separable sublinear programming. Furthermore, Jeyakumar and Li introduce a necessary and sufficient constraint qualification for Lagrange duality theorem for separable convex programming. However, separable convex constraints do not always satisfy the constraint qualification, that is, Lagrange duality does not always hold for separable convex programming. In this paper, we study duality theorems for separable convex programming without any qualifications. We show that a separable convex inequality system always satisfies the closed cone constraint qualification for quasiconvex programming and investigate a Lagrange-type duality theorem for separable convex programming. In addition, we introduce a duality theorem and a necessary and sufficient optimality condition for a separable convex programming problem, whose constraints do not satisfy the Slater condition.  相似文献

In this paper, we first examine how global optimality of non-convex constrained optimization problems is related to Lagrange multiplier conditions. We then establish Lagrange multiplier conditions for global optimality of general quadratic minimization problems with quadratic constraints. We also obtain necessary global optimality conditions, which are different from the Lagrange multiplier conditions for special classes of quadratic optimization problems. These classes include weighted least squares with ellipsoidal constraints, and quadratic minimization with binary constraints. We discuss examples which demonstrate that our optimality conditions can effectively be used for identifying global minimizers of certain multi-extremal non-convex quadratic optimization problems. The design of optimal inputs for linear and nonlinear system identification involves the maximization of a quadratic performance index subject to an input energy constraint. In the classical approach, a Lagrange multiplier is introduced whose value is an unknown constant. In recent papers, the Lagrange multiplier has been determined by plotting a curve of the Lagrange multiplier as a function of the critical interval length or a curve of input energy versus the interval length. A new approach is presented in this paper in which the Lagrange multiplier is introduced as a state variable and evaluated simultaneously with the optimal input. Numerical results are given for both a linear and a nonlinear dynamic system.  相似文献

Throughout this paper, the authors introduce a new condition, defined by Assumption  SS, which establishes a necessary and sufficient condition for the validity of the strong duality between a convex optimization problem and its Lagrange dual. This work will be focused on the context of emptiness of the interior of the ordering cone and convexity of the equality constraints. Moreover, this new condition will be necessary and sufficient for the infinite dimensional Lagrange multiplier rule. This new principle will find application to the elastic–plastic torsion problem, to the continuum model of transportation and to a problem with quadratic equality constraint with connected to evolutionary illumination and visibility problems.  相似文献

The attraction of dual trajectories of Newton’s method for the Lagrange system to critical Lagrange multipliers is analyzed. This stable effect, which has been confirmed by numerical practice, leads to the Newton-Lagrange method losing its superlinear convergence when applied to problems with irregular constraints. At the same time, available theoretical results are of “negative” character; i.e., they show that convergence to a noncritical multiplier is not possible or unlikely. In the case of a purely quadratic problem with a single constraint, a “positive” result is proved for the first time demonstrating that the critical multipliers are attractors for the dual trajectories. Additionally, the influence exerted by the attraction to critical multipliers on the convergence rate of direct and dual trajectories is characterized.  相似文献

We consider the optimal control of a semilinear parabolic equation with pointwise bound constraints on the control and finitely many integral constraints on the final state. Using the standard Robinson’s constraint qualification, we provide a second order necessary condition over a set of strictly critical directions. The main feature of this result is that the qualification condition needed for the second order analysis is the same as for classical finite-dimensional problems and does not imply the uniqueness of the Lagrange multiplier. We establish also a second order sufficient optimality condition which implies, for problems with a quadratic Hamiltonian, the equivalence between solutions satisfying the quadratic growth property in the L 1 and \(L^{\infty }\) topologies.  相似文献

In this paper, we prove a new discrete maximum principle (DMP) for the one-dimensional Poisson equation discretized by the hp-FEM. While the DMP for piecewise-linear elements is a classical result from the 1970s, no extensions to hp-FEM are available to the present day. Due to a negative result by Höhn and Mittelmann from 1981, related to quadratic Lagrange elements, it was long assumed that higher-order finite elements do not satisfy discrete maximum principles. In this paper we explain why it is not possible to make a straightforward extension of the classical DMP to the higher-order case, and we propose stronger assumptions on the right-hand side under which an extension is possible.  相似文献

We derive a quadratically convergent algorithm for minimizing a nonlinear function subject to nonlinear equality constraints. We show, following Kaufman [4], how to compute efficiently the derivative of a basis of the subspace tangent to the feasible surface. The derivation minimizes the use of Lagrange multipliers, producing multiplier estimates as a by-product of other calculations. An extension of Kantorovich's theorem shows that the algorithm maintains quadratic convergence even if the basis of the tangent space changes abruptly from iteration to iteration. The algorithm and its quadratic convergence are known but the drivation is new, simple, and suggests several new modifications of the algorithm.  相似文献

Summary. A unified approach to construct finite elements based on a dual-hybrid formulation of the linear elasticity problem is given. In this formulation the stress tensor is considered but its symmetry is relaxed by a Lagrange multiplier which is nothing else than the rotation. This construction is linked to the approximations of the Stokes problem in the primitive variables and it leads to a new interpretation of known elements and to new finite elements. Moreover all estimates are valid uniformly with respect to compressibility and apply in the incompressible case which is close to the Stokes problem. 作者曾指出[1],弹性理论的最小位能原理和最小余能原理都是有约束条件限制下的变分原理采用拉格朗日乘子法,我们可以把这些约束条件乘上待定的拉氏乘子,计入有关变分原理的泛函内,从而将这些有约束条件的极值变分原理,化为无条件的驻值变分原理.如果把这些待定拉氏乘子和原来的变量都看作是独立变量而进行变分,则从有关泛函的驻值条件就可以求得这些拉氏乘子用原有物理变量表示的表达式.把这些表达式代入待定的拉氏乘子中,即可求所谓广义变分原理的驻值变分泛函.但是某些情况下,待定的拉氏乘子在变分中证明恒等于零.这是一种临界的变分状态.在这种临界状态中,我们无法用待定拉氏乘子法把变分约束条件吸收入泛函,从而解除这个约束条件.从最小余能原理出发,利用待定拉氏乘子法,企图把应力应变关系这个约束条件吸收入有关泛函时,就发生这种临界状态,用拉氏乘子法,从余能原理只能导出Hellinger-Reissner变分原理[2],[3],这个原理中只有应力和位移两类独立变量,而应力应变关系则仍是变分约束条件,人们利用这个条件,从变分求得的应力中求应变.所以Hellinger-Reissner变分原理仍是一种有条件的变分原理.  相似文献

In this paper, we first give a dual characterization for set containments defined by lower semi-continuous and sublinear functions on Banach spaces. Next, we provide dual characterizations for robust polyhedral containments where a robust counterpart of an uncertain polyhedral set is contained in another polyhedral set or a polyhedral set is contained in a robust counterpart of an uncertain polyhedral set. Finally, as an application, we derive Lagrange multiplier characterizations for robust solutions of the robust uncertain linear programming problems.  相似文献

The stabilized version of the sequential quadratic programming algorithm (sSQP) had been developed in order to achieve superlinear convergence in situations when the Lagrange multipliers associated to a solution are not unique. Within the framework of Fischer (Math Program 94:91–124, 2002), the key to local superlinear convergence of sSQP are the following two properties: upper Lipschitzian behavior of solutions of the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) system under canonical perturbations and local solvability of sSQP subproblems with the associated primal-dual step being of the order of the distance from the current iterate to the solution set of the unperturbed KKT system. According to Fernández and Solodov (Math Program 125:47–73, 2010), both of these properties are ensured by the second-order sufficient optimality condition (SOSC) without any constraint qualification assumptions. In this paper, we state precise relationships between the upper Lipschitzian property of solutions of KKT systems, error bounds for KKT systems, the notion of critical Lagrange multipliers (a subclass of multipliers that violate SOSC in a very special way), the second-order necessary condition for optimality, and solvability of sSQP subproblems. Moreover, for the problem with equality constraints only, we prove superlinear convergence of sSQP under the assumption that the dual starting point is close to a noncritical multiplier. Since noncritical multipliers include all those satisfying SOSC but are not limited to them, we believe this gives the first superlinear convergence result for any Newtonian method for constrained optimization under assumptions that do not include any constraint qualifications and are weaker than SOSC. In the general case when inequality constraints are present, we show that such a relaxation of assumptions is not possible. We also consider applying sSQP to the problem where inequality constraints are reformulated into equalities using slack variables, and discuss the assumptions needed for convergence in this approach. We conclude with consequences for local regularization methods proposed in (Izmailov and Solodov SIAM J Optim 16:210–228, 2004; Wright SIAM J. Optim. 15:673–676, 2005). In particular, we show that these methods are still locally superlinearly convergent under the noncritical multiplier assumption, weaker than SOSC employed originally.  相似文献

We prove that, under the usual constraint qualification and a stability assumption, the generalized gradient set of the marginal function of a differentiable program in a Banach space contains the Lagrange multiplier set. Abstract

We provide a modified augmented Lagrange method coupled with a Tikhonov regularization for solving ill-posed state constrained elliptic optimal control problems with sparse controls. We consider a linear quadratic optimal control problem without any additional L2 regularization terms. The sparsity is guaranteed by an additional L1 term. Here, the modification of the classical augmented Lagrange method guarantees us uniform boundedness of the multiplier that corresponds to the state constraints. We present a coupling between the regularization parameter introduced by the Tikhonov regularization and the penalty parameter from the augmented Lagrange method, which allows us to prove strong convergence of the controls and their corresponding states. Moreover, convergence results proving the weak convergence of the adjoint state and weak*-convergence of the multiplier are provided. Finally, we demonstrate our method in several numerical examples.  相似文献
