Ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of thioether‐derived oxanorbornene imide ( M1 ) and its copolymerization with various cycloolefin comonomers such as cyclopentene ( M2 ), cyclopent‐3‐en‐1‐ol ( M3 ), cycloheptene ( M4 ), and cyclooctene ( M5 ) using Hoveyda–Grubbs second generation catalyst has been investigated. Polymerizations were performed at two different temperatures (0 and 25 °C) and the obtained functional poly(olefin)s were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance 1H and 13C (NMR), and infrared spectroscopy as well as size exclusion chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis analyses. Additionally, the dependence of the polymer composition on the reaction temperature and monomer feed was studied with time‐dependent 1H NMR experiments. Copolymerization of M1 with a five‐membered cycloolefin monomer M2 showed relatively low ROMP reactivity irrespective of the reaction conditions in comparison to M3 , M4 , and M5 monomers. In general, the degree of monomer incorporation into poly(olefin)s were determined in the order of M5 > M3 > M4 > M2 , and that sheds light on the effect of cycloolefin ring strain energies in the ruthenium‐alkylidene initiated ROMP. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The block and random copolymerization of a series of amino acid and amino ester functionalized norbornenes by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) induced by the well‐defined molybdenum [Mo(?N‐2,6‐iPr? C6H3)(?CHCMe2)Ph)(OCMe3)2] or ruthenium [Ru(PCy)2Cl2(?CHPh)] based initiators is described. The monomers are derived from the amino acids glycine, alanine, and isoleucine or the methyl esters of these amino acids and either endo‐ or exo‐norborn‐5‐ene‐2,3‐dicarboxylic anhydride. Enantiomerically pure monomers afforded optically active polymers, and the mechanism and kinetics of the copolymerizations are investigated. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper describes the synthesis of a novel monomer of 5‐substituted cyclooctene with the pendant of imidazolium salt (7) and the ring‐opening metathesis polymerization of the functionalized cyclooctenes ( 4 and 7 ) in CH2Cl2 and ionic liquid [bmim][PF6] by a ruthenium‐based catalyst RuCl2(PCy3)(SIMes)(CHPh) (2). The polymerization, which was carried out in ionic liquid, afforded improved control over the molecular weight (Mn) and polydispersity of the resultant products (PDI <1.4). Furthermore, to facilitate the GPC measurement for molecular weight of polymers, the charged polymers (poly‐ 7 ) were hydrolyzed to give uncharged polymers (poly‐ 4 *) by removing the imidazolium pendant from the polymer chains. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 5‐Norbornene‐2‐ethyl ester (mixture of endo and exo) is polymerized via ring‐opening metathesis polymerization, yielding polymers with molecular weights ranging from 50,000 to 5,000,000 g/mol. The polymers are hydroxylated and saponified without alteration of the molecular weight. The polymers are analyzed by NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. Films are cast from the polymers at several molecular weights and their rheological properties are investigated. The results showed greater solid‐like character with increasing molecular weight for all polymers analyzed. 采用Chirex(S)-LEU(S)-NEA、ChiralcelOD-H和ChiralpakAD-H手性色谱柱直接拆分了2′-羟基-1,1′-联萘-2-苯甲酸酯(HBNB)、1,1′-联萘-2,2′-二苯甲酸酯(BNDB)和2′-甲氧基-1,1′-联萘-2-苯甲酸酯(MBNB)对映体。分别考察了流动相组成、柱温和化合物结构对手性分离的影响。结果表明:3对联萘二酚苯甲酸酯对映体在ChiralpakAD-H柱上的拆分效果最好。当采用正己烷/异丙醇(40/60,v/v)为流动相时,HBNB、BNDB和MBNB对映体的分离因子(α)和分离度(Rs)分别为1.76、1.74、1.40和6.47、7.81、4.75。对比联萘二酚(BN)的分离,从联萘分子中2-位取代基、对映体出峰顺序和热力学参数等方面探讨了相关手性分离机理。  相似文献

Homopolymers and copolymers containing phenylenevinylenes and naphthylenevinylenes can be synthesized by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization of strained monomers such as tetraoctyloxy‐substituted cyclophanedienes and naphthalenophanedienes initiated by the third‐generation Grubbs’ initiator. The resulting homopolymers exhibited low polydispersities. The block copolymers can also be synthesized by the sequential ring‐opening metathesis polymerization of two individual monomers. The structures of homopolymers and block copolymers were fully characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The molecular weight distribution of the block copolymers is relatively broad compared to their parent homopolymers possibly due to chain transfer reaction. The molar ratio of the two blocks can be tailored by the ratio of the monomers employed. The block copolymers exhibited a more efficient energy transfer in the solid state between the different blocks than those carried out in solution. The cure kinetics of polydicyclopentadiene prepared by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization with three different concentrations of Grubbs' catalyst were examined with differential scanning calorimetry. The experimental data were used to test several different phenomenological kinetic models. The data were best modeled with a model‐free isoconversional method. This analysis revealed that the activation energy increased significantly for degrees of cure greater than 60%. A number of classes of polynorbornenes containing cationic iron moieties within their side chains were prepared via ring‐opening metathesis polymerization with a ruthenium‐based catalyst. The iron‐containing polymers displayed excellent solubility in polar organic solvents. The weight‐average molecular weights of these polymeric materials were estimated to be in the range of 18,000–48,000. Thermogravimetric analysis of these polymers showed two distinct weight losses. The first weight loss was in the range of 204–260 °C and was due to the loss of the metallic moieties, whereas the second weight loss was observed at 368–512 °C and was due to the degradation of the polymer backbone. Cyclic voltammetry studies of the iron‐containing polymers showed that the 18 e? cationic iron centers underwent a reduction to give the neutral 19 e? complexes at half‐wave potential (E1/2) = ?1.105 V. Photolysis of the metallated polymers led to the isolation of the norbornene polymers in very good yields. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed a sharp increase in the glass‐transition temperatures up to 91 °C when rigid aromatic side chains were incorporated into the norbornene polymers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. (?)‐(1S,2R)‐Norbornene‐2‐carboxylic acid alkyl esters (alkyl = Me, Bz, L ‐menthyl, or D ‐menthyl) were successfully prepared by the Diels–Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene with (R)‐(?)‐pantolactone‐O‐yl acrylate followed by epimerization and column chromatography. The enantiomeric excess was 99.9%. These monomers were polymerized by Pd(II)‐based catalysts, and high yields of the polymers were obtained. The methyl ester gave an optically active polymer of high optical rotation (monomer [α]D = ?24.7, polymer [α]D = ?98.5). This high rotation value of the polymer was attributed to the isotactic chain regulation of the polymer. This high rotation was not observed with methyl esters prepared by the transesterification of menthyl esters. The stereoregular polymer exhibited notable resonance peaks at 39 ppm in 13C NMR spectra. The ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of norbornenes containing acetyl‐protected glucose [2,3,4,6‐tetra‐O‐acetyl‐glucos‐1‐O‐yl 5‐norbornene‐2‐carboxylate ( 1 )] and maltose [2,3,6,2′,3′,4′,6′‐hepta‐O‐acetyl‐maltos‐1‐O‐yl 5‐norbornene‐2‐carboxylate ( 2 )] was explored in the presence of Mo(N‐2,6‐iPr2C6H3)(CHCMe2Ph)(OtBu)2 ( A ), Ru(CHPh)(Cl)2(PCy3)2 ( B ; Cy = cyclohexyl), and Ru(CHPh)(Cl)2(IMesH2)(PCy3) ( C ; IMesH2 = 1,3‐dimesityl‐4,5‐dihydromidazol‐2‐ylidene). The polymerizations promoted by B and A proceeded in a living fashion with exclusive initiation efficiency, and the resultant polymers possessed number‐average molecular weights that were very close to those calculated on the basis of the monomer/initiator molar ratios and narrow molecular weight distributions (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.18) in all cases. The observed catalytic activity of B was strongly dependent on both the initial monomer concentration and the solvent employed, whereas the polymerization initiated with A was completed efficiently even at low initial monomer concentrations. The polymerization with C also took place efficiently, and even the polymerization with 1000 equiv of 1 was completed within 2 h. First‐order relationships between the propagation rates and the monomer concentrations were observed for all the polymerization runs, and the estimated rate constants at 25 °C increased in the following order: A > C > B . On the basis of these results, we concluded that ROMP with A was more suitable than ROMP with B or C for the efficient and precise preparation of polymers containing carbohydrates. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work presents a two‐step, one‐pot process to make star polymers with polywedge arms. In a one‐pot reaction, after the polywedge arms are synthesized, crosslinker species are added to the reaction, rapidly forming star polymers. Crosslinker species with different degrees of conformational freedom were designed and synthesized and their capacity to generate star polymers was evaluated. Mass conversions up to 92% and stars with up to 17 arms were synthesized with the most rigid crosslinker. The effects of arm molecular weight and molar ratio of crosslinker to arm on mass conversion and arms per star were explored further. Finally, the size‐molecular weight scaling relationship for polywedges with linear and star architectures was compared, corroborating theoretical results regarding star polymers with arms much larger than their core. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article describes the formation and characterization of self‐assembled nanoparticles of controlled sizes based on amphiphilic block copolymers synthesized by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization. We synthesized a novel hydrophobic derivative of norbornene; this monomer could be polymerized using Grubbs' catalyst [Cl2Ru(CHPh)(PCy3)2] forming polymers of controlled molecular weight. We synthesized amphiphilic block copolymers of controlled composition and showed that they assemble into nanoparticles of controlled size. The nanoparticles were characterized using dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Tuning the composition of the block copolymer enables the tuning of the diameters of the nanoparticles in the 30‐ to 80‐nm range. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The kinetics of the initiation and propagation of the ring‐opening metathesis polymerization of exo,exo‐5,6‐bis(methoxycarbonyl)‐7‐oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept‐2‐ene catalyzed by Grubbs' catalyst (Cl2(PCy3)2Ru?CHPh) were measured by ultraviolet–visible and 1H NMR spectroscopy, respectively. Activation parameters for these processes were also determined. Although the ratio of the rate constant of initiation to the rate constant of propagation was determined to be less than 1 for this system, this polymerization showed many of the characteristics of a living system, including low polydispersities. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study describes the synthesis of polynorbornene colloidal particles able to release active molecules in response to pH change. Such functionalized polynorbornene latices with surface active molecules have been obtained by ring‐opening metathesis copolymerization in a dichloromethane/ethanol medium in the presence of α‐norbornenyl poly(ethylene oxide) macromonomer. Two different strategies of introduction of the active molecule—either at their periphery or at their core— have been contemplated. The particles have been characterized by both dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Their size was found to range from 260 to 600 nm. The release of the active molecules was monitored by UV spectrometry. After 48 h in an appropriate HCl buffer (pH = 3) more than 80% of the initially linked active molecule was released. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. (±)‐exo,endo‐5,6‐Bis{[[11′‐[2″,5″‐bis[2‐(3′‐fluoro‐4′‐n‐alkoxyphenyl)ethynyl]phenyl]undecyl]oxy]carbonyl}bicyclo[2.2.1]hept‐2‐ene (n = 1–12) monomers were polymerized by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature with Mo(CHCMe2Ph)(N‐2,6‐iPr2Ph)(OtBu)2 as the initiator to produce polymers with number‐average degrees of polymerization of 8–37 and relatively narrow polydispersities (polydispersity index = 1.08–1.31). The thermotropic behavior of these materials was independent of the molecular weight and therefore representative of that of a polymer at approximately 15 repeat units. Shell‐functionalized polymeric nanoparticle was prepared through the method of polymerization‐induced self‐assembly of block copolymers [poly(2,3‐bis(2‐bromoisobutyryloxymethyl)‐5‐norbornene)‐block‐poly(7‐oxanorborn‐5‐ene‐exo‐exo‐2,3‐dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester), PBNBE‐b‐PONBDM] via one‐pot ring‐opening metathesis polymerization of 2,3‐bis(2‐bromoisobutyryloxymethyl)‐5‐norbornene (BNBE) and 7‐oxanorborn‐5‐ene‐exo‐exo‐2,3‐dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester (ONBDM) in a selective solvent. The compositions and the molecular weights of the copolymers were estimated by 1H‐NMR and gel permeation chromatography. The micelles were characterized by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron micrograph, and atomic force microscopy. A high‐glass‐transition‐temperature polynorbornene, poly(NBEDPY), containing chromophore groups was synthesized by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using Grubbs' catalysts; poly(HNBEDPY) was obtained by the reduction of poly(NBEDPY). The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of poly(NBEDPY) and hydrogenated poly(HNBEDPY) were as high as 250 °C and 220 °C, respectively, because of the rigid dipyrene groups, which are higher than those of commercially available ring‐opened hydrogenated polynorbornenes (JSR ARTON®; 120–165 °C). The 10% weight‐loss temperatures of hydrogenated poly(HNBEDPY) and poly(NBEDPY) were up to 450 °C and 400 °C, respectively. A hydrogenated poly (HNBEDPY) film showed excellent transparency (over 91%). The photoluminescence emission spectra of poly(HNBEDPY) showed strong solvent‐polarity dependence, revealing that poly (HNBEDPY) underwent remarkable bathochromic shifts with an increase in solvent polarity. Poly(HNBEDPY) also showed remarkable fluorescent solvatochromism (blue in toluene, greenish yellow in dimethyl sulfoxide). The cyclic voltammogram of poly(HNBEDPY) film cast onto an indium tin oxide (ITO)‐coated glass substrate exhibited one reversible oxidation redox couple at 0.55 V versus Ag/Ag+ in acetonitrile solution. The electrochromic characteristics of poly(HNBEDPY) showed reversibility, with a color change from its green neutral form to dark red upon the application of potentials from 0 to 1.0 V. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Functional polynorbornenes (PNBEs) containing pyrrolidine moiety and bis(trifluoromethyl)biphenyl side group were synthesized via ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), and the microstructure of polymer chain was characterized by NMR spectroscopy. Poly(N‐3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)biphenyl‐norbornene‐pyrrolidine) (PTNP) and poly(N‐phenyl‐norbornene‐pyrrolidine) (PPNP) are supposed to have practically trans double bonds and adopt isotactic syn conformation, whereas poly(N‐3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)biphenyl‐norbornene‐dicarboximide) (PTNDI) has both trans and cis double bonds and atactic microstructure. PTNP, PTNDI, and PPNP have much different dielectric constants of 20, 7, and 3, respectively, which is attributed to both the polar 3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)biphenyl group and the stereoregular chain structure. The existence of rigid pyrrolidine moiety has a positive contribution to form the tactic polymer chain during ROMP. Polymers are highly thermal stable up to ~300 °C. Having good dielectric properties and thermal stability, these functional PNBEs are expected as the potential dielectric material in thin film capacitors. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
