We develop a microscopic theory of the nematic phase with consideration of the effect of the collective excitation on properties of nematic liquid crystals. The model is based on the Heisenberg's exchange model of the ferromagnetic materials. Since the orientation of the molecular long axis and the angular momentum of the molecule rotating around its long axis have the same direction, operators can be introduced to research the nematic liquid crystals. Using the lattice model and the Holstein--Primakoff transformation, the Hamiltonian of the system can be obtained, which has the same form as that of the ferromagnetic substance. The relation between the order parameter and reduced temperature can be gotten. It is in good agreement with the experimental results in the low temperature region, the accordance is better than that of the molecular field theory and the computer simulation. In high temperature region close to the transition point, by considering the effect of the higher-order terms in the Hamiltonian, theoretical prediction is in better agreement with the experiment. That indicates the many-body effect is important to nematic liquid crystals.  相似文献

Recently, neutron diffraction data obtained with a fully deuterated sample of the nematic liquid crystal para-azoxyanisole (PAA) were reported. In the present paper a number of simple ideas which contribute to an understanding of these data are presented. It is shown that part of the structure of the observed diffraction patterns can be attributed to the wavelength dependence of a molecular form-factor. Further, it is found that diffuse scattering observed in PAA just below its melting point may be explained in terms of oscillations of molecules about their long axes. The temperature dependence of this diffuse scattering suggests that the melting of PAA may be driven by a soft torsional mode or modes. The explanation of the diffuse scattering from the solid and the similarities between the diffraction patterns of solid and nematic phases suggest that scattering from the nematic phase might be explicable in terms of hindered rotations of molecules about their long axes. A simple model based on this hypothesis and on the neglect of short-range orientational correlations of the molecular long axes is proposed. A comparison of results obtained from this model with the experimental data demonstrates that there is considerable short-range ordering of the long molecular axes in both the nematic and isotropic-liquid phases of PAA.  相似文献

A spin wave theory is proposed to study nematic liquid crystals. Since the orientation of the molecular long axis and the angular momentum of the molecule rotating around its long axis have the same direction, operators can be introduced to research the nematic liquid crystal. By transforming the intermolecular interaction potential,the Hamiltonian of the system has the same form as that of the ferromagnetic substance. The relation of the order parameters to the reduced temperature can be obtained. It is in good agreement with the experimental results in the low temperature region. In the high temperature region close to the transition point, by using the Hamiltonian, the transition point can be obtained, which is near to the Maier-Saupe‘s result.  相似文献

Photonic crystals made of nematic liquid crystal intercalated into the void space of close-packed silica spheres (synthetic porous opal) exhibit significant electric-field-induced shift of the optical Bragg reflection peak when the liquid crystal has the long molecular axis oriented parallel to the sphere surfaces. No such effect is observed for comparable fields when the long-axis orientation is normal to the sphere surfaces.  相似文献

We investigated dielectric properties of a hockey-stick-shaped liquid crystal (HLC). Two dielectric relaxation modes were observed at 0.91 kHz and 4.51 MHz. The low frequency relaxation modes in isotropic, smectic, and nematic phases are related to the motion of ions, collective tilt fluctuation, and rotation around the long molecular axis, respectively. Meanwhile, the high frequency relaxation modes in nematic and smectic phases was due to the rotation around the short axis of the molecules and hindered by the resistance of the ITO layers. We also examined the electrooptical response of the 5.0 wt% HLC-doped commercial nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixtures. The birefringence of the LC mixture was slightly increased, while the falling time and the rotational viscosity was decreased in the nematic phase.  相似文献

Addition of a low concentration of a very long (430 kg/mol) side group liquid crystal polymer is shown to produce dramatic changes in the flow characteristics of a calamitic nematic liquid crystal. This polymer causes a typical flow-aligning nematic liquid crystal to align near the velocity gradient direction rather than near the velocity direction, corresponding to having a tumbling parameter lambda<-1, for concentrations greater than 7.5% polymer. Such flow-aligning behavior has not been reported previously in a calamitic nematic. The large molecular weight of the present polymer relative to those examined in the prior literature is responsible for these new phenomena.  相似文献

The static dielectric studies of hexoxy heptoxy and octoxy cyanobiphenyl liquid crystals (6OCB, 7OCB and 8OCB) and the euteric nematic mixture of 6OCB/7OCB indicate that molecular alignment can be induced by the steel electrod surface of a dielectric thick cell with an electrode gap of about 1 mm. Whereas the permittivity values of alkyl cyanobiphenyls (6CB, 7CB and 8CB) in the nematic phase indicate imperfect alignment of the liquid crystal molecules. The good parallel molecular alignment of alkoxy cyanobiphenyls was to existence of oxygen atom in their molecular structures. These observations demonstrated a sensitive relationship between the molecular alignment, molecular structure and surface effect. Analysis of the dielectric data re-confirmed that the dipole components of the alkoxy cyanobiphenyls along the long molecular axes have a strong tendency for anti-parallel alignment which increases with increasing nematic order, whereas the dipole components perpendicular to the long molecular axes indicate a tendency for parallel alignment.  相似文献

由铁电液晶(FLC)手性近晶C相下螺旋结构的理论近似计算得出FLC一个螺距内平均折射率的表达式,根据表达式可得出一个螺距内的FLC分子作为一个整体可以看成一个向列相液晶分子模型的结论.当FLC沿螺旋轴方向的厚度等于FLC螺距的整数倍时,液晶盒内垂直取向的FLC分子可看作向列相液晶模型组成的集合.ZLI-3654型FLC与5CB型向列相液晶的实验结果验证了上述结论,理论结果和实验结果一致.这一理论可为畸变螺旋FLC和垂直排列畸变螺旋FLC器件的制备以及FLC的应用提供理论指导和更深的认识. 关键词: 铁电液晶 螺距 平均折射率 向列相液晶  相似文献

Expressions are obtained for the components of the permittivity tensor in the optical region for a nematic liquid crystal with impurity molecules having the internal rotation conformational degree of freedom. The dependence of the intensity and dichroism of the impurity absorption bands in isotropic and nematic phases on the parameters of conformational, orientation, and mixed conformation-orientation orders of molecules is found. The influence of the mutual correlation of conformational and orientation degrees of freedom of molecules on these parameters is studied. The dependence of the oscillator strengths of molecular transitions on the phase state of a medium and the orientation order of the impurity subsystem is analyzed. The self-consistent nature of molecular, structural, and spectral changes upon the nematic-isotropic liquid phase transition is demonstrated.  相似文献

The present paper reports sign inversion in dielectric anisotropy of a nematic liquid crystal, i.e. 5CB, as an effect of doping dye (solvent green 3) in small amount. It is the result of strong variation of the parallel component of dielectric permittivity with temperature for a dye doped sample. This behavior is attributed to the interaction taking place between the nematic liquid crystal molecule and the dye molecule. This behavior of dielectric anisotropy has been explained on the basis of interaction between the dye (guest) and the liquid crystal molecules (host).  相似文献

为了探究液晶电光效应的微观机理,以扭曲向列相液晶为研究对象,对液晶分子的变化情况进行了理论分析。运用连续体弹性理论分析了扭曲向列相液晶分子的指向矢取向变化,并对液晶电光效应曲线不同区间范围液晶微观结构的变化进行了系统分析。结果表明:液晶分子在零电场条件下的扭曲是均匀的;当外加电场大于某一值时,液晶分子开始转向,液晶产生电光效应。研究结果对液晶显示器件设计和深入理解液晶电光效应机理具有一定的指导意义。  相似文献

Temperature dependence of ratio between dielectric anisotropy and order parameter of fluorinated nematic liquid crystal is investigated by using a semi-empirical molecular orbital package that can accurately calculate an angle between molecular dipole moment and long axis. We optimize the molecular conformations with three semi-empirical Hamiltonians AM1, PM3 and PM5, and then make a comparison between computational results and experimental measurements. It is shown that the results obtained from AM1 method are in good agreement with the measurements. A nematic liquid crystal slab composed of N molecular layers is investigated using a simple cubic lattice model, based upon the molecular pair potential which is spatially anisotropic and dependent on elastic constants of liquid crystals. A perfect nematic order is assumed in the theoretical treatment, which means the orientation of the molecular long axis coincides with the director of liquid crystal and the total free energy equals to the total interaction energy. We present a modified Gruhn-Hess model, which is relative to the splay-bend elastic constant K13. Furthermore, we have studied the free nematic interfacial behavior (intrinsic anchoring) by this model in the assumption of the perfect nematic order. We find that the preferred orientation at the free interface and the intrinsic anchoring strength change with the value of modification, and that the director profile can be determined by the competition of the intrinsic anchoring with external forces present in the system. Also we simulate the intrinsic anchoring at different temperatures using Monte Carlo method and the simulation results show that the intrinsic anchoring favors planar alignment and the free interface is more disordered than the bulk.  相似文献

The polarization state of transmitted light is linked to liquid crystal(LC) molecular distribution. The dynamic behavior of a twisted nematic LC molecule is measured with a home-built 10 k Hz snapshot polarimeter. Only the transient molecule rotations are observed when the external voltage changes, and the molecules return to their original orientations quickly even when high voltage is applied. Our observations cannot be attributed to the traditional electro-optic effect. The invalidation of the static external field indicates the shielding effect of redistributing impurity ions in an LC cell.  相似文献

NMR studies of methyldichlorophosphine have been undertaken in the nematic phase of mixed liquid crystals of opposite diamagnetic anisotropies. The rα structure is derived. The proton chemical-shift anisotropy has been determined from the studies without the use of a reference compound and without a change of experimental conditions. It is shown that the molecule orients in the liquid crystal with positive diamagnetic anisotropy in such a way that the C3 symmetry axis of the CH3P moiety is preferentially aligned perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field, unlike other similar systems. This is interpreted in terms of the formation of a weak solvent-solute molecular complex. The heteronuclear indirect spin-spin coupling constants are determined. The sign of the two-bond JPH is found to be positive.  相似文献

The present work deals with the preparation of new liquid crystalline cellulose dispersed liquid crystal films (100 μm) using a shearing casting technique. The matrix of the films presents the so-called band texture perpendicular to the shear direction. The nematic low molecular weight liquid crystal is encapsulated in micron and submicron size ellipsoids. The ratio between the lengths of the main axis and the short axis is around 1.23. The main axis is oriented, on average, 28° away from the shear direction. The evolution of the band texture and of the ellipsoidal liquid crystal droplets is investigated by polarizing optical microscopy and light scattering techniques as a function of the strain imposed along and perpendicular to the shear direction. Stretch along shear with strain equal to 0.8 seems to have no effect on the banded structure of the matrix, while the nematic liquid crystal ellipsoids slightly orient the main axis to the stress direction and their shape anisotropy increases by a factor of 2. Deformation in the direction transverse to the shear direction induces a deep change of the polymeric matrix and, at the end, a fibrillar structure is found. The nematic ellipsoids rotate their main axis and align along the stretch direction. Their shape anisotropy evolves from a value of 1.23 to 1 for intermediate deformations with strain equal to 0.5, to a final value of 5 with strain equal to 0.8, in the perpendicular direction.  相似文献

A numerical method has been developed for calculating the director configuration in ellipsoidal droplets of a nematic liquid crystal with strong tangential anchoring in a uniform magnetic field of an arbitrary orientation. A relation has been obtained for determining the Friedericksz threshold corresponding to the beginning of the reorientation of the central region of a droplet when the field is orthogonal to the biopolar axis. The effect of the breaking of the orthogonal condition on the threshold character of the orientation process is considered. The reorientation of the ensemble of bipolar droplets of the 5CB nematic liquid crystal dispersed in polyvinyl butyral has been studied by the magneto-optical method. Comparative analysis of calculation data and measured values of the threshold field has been performed.  相似文献
