FexCo100-x (x=100, 65, 50 at%) epitaxial thin films were prepared on MgO(1 1 0) single-crystal substrates heated at 300 °C by ultra-high vacuum molecular beam epitaxy. The film structure and the growth mechanism are discussed. FeCo(2 1 1) films with bcc structure grow epitaxially on MgO(1 1 0) substrates with two types of variants whose orientations are rotated around the film normal by 180° each other for all compositions. FexCo100-x film growth follows the Volmer Weber mode. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates the out-of-plane and the in-plane lattice spacings are in agreement with the values of respective bulk FexCo100-x crystals with very small errors less than ±0.4%, suggesting the strains in the films are very small. High-resolution cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy shows that periodical misfit dislocations are preferentially introduced in the film at the Fe50Co50/MgO interface along the MgO[1 1¯ 0] direction. The presence of such periodical dislocations decreases the large lattice mismatch of about −17% existing at the FeCo/MgO interface along the MgO[1 1¯ 0] direction.  相似文献

Electrodeposition is used to produce epitaxial single-crystal films on Au(1 1 1) substrates without annealing or other post-deposition modification. X-ray techniques show that the Bi(0 1 2) plane is parallel to the underlying Au(1 1 1) surface, and the azimuthal orientation of the films is determined. Combination of the X-ray data with in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images suggests a common growth mode from the first few layers up to thick films.  相似文献

We report the fabrication of one-dimensional (1D) Bi nanowires grown on Ag(1 1 1) with average lateral width from 9 to 20 nm by physical vapor deposition in ultra high vacuum conditions. In situ low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy analyses reveal that the preferred growth of 1D Bi nanostructures is driven by the highly anisotropic bonding in the crystallographic structure of the Bi(1 1 0) plane. The Bi nanowires grow along direction and align with the directions on Ag(1 1 1). The growth of the Bi nanowires proceeds in a bilayer growth mode resulting from the layer pairing in Bi(1 1 0) which saturates the dangling bonds and lowers the total energy.  相似文献

The STM technique with a special Bi/W tip was used to study the interaction of hydrogen atoms with the Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 surface. The reactivity of different room temperature (RT) adsorption sites, such as adatoms (A), rest atoms (R), and corner holes (CH) was investigated. The reactivity of CH sites was found to be ∼2 times less than that of R and A sites. At temperatures higher than RT, hydrogen atoms rearrange among A, R, and CH sites, with increased occupation of R sites (T <  300 °C). Further temperature increase leads to hydrogen desorption, where its surface diffusion plays an active role. We discuss one of the possible desorption mechanisms, with the corner holes surrounded by a high potential barrier. Hydrogen atoms have a higher probability to overcome the desorption barrier rather than diffuse either into or out of the corner hole. The desorption temperature of hydrogen from CH, R, and A sites is about the same, equal to ∼500 °C. Also it is shown that hydrogen adsorption on the CH site causes slight electric charge redistribution over neighbouring adatoms, namely, increases the occupation of electronic states on A sites in the unfaulted halves of the Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 unit cell. Based on these findings, the indirect method of investigation with conventional W tips was suggested for adsorbate interaction with CH sites.  相似文献

A new method was developed to control Co film oxidation in an epitaxially grown Cu(wedge)/Co/Cu(0 0 1) film. By annealing the film at 200 °C within 10−6 Torr oxygen environment, we find that the top Cu wedge controls the Co underlayer oxidation continuously as a function of the Cu film thickness. Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect measurement shows that the exchange bias of the resulting CoO/Co film exhibits a systematic variation with the Cu thickness, thus offering a new method of tailoring the exchange bias of CoO/Co films.  相似文献

From ab initio studies employing the pseudopotential method and the density functional scheme, we report on progressive changes in geometry, electronic states, and atomic orbitals on Si(0 0 1) by adsorption of different amounts of Bi coverage. For the 1/4 ML coverage, uncovered Si dimers retain the characteristic asymmetric (tilted) geometry of the clean Si(0 0 1) surface and the Si dimers underneath the Bi dimer have become symmetric (untilted) and elongated. For this geometry, occupied as well as unoccupied surface states are found to lie in the silicon band gap, both sets originating mainly from the uncovered and tilted silicon dimers. For the 1/2 ML coverage, there are still both occupied and unoccupied surface states in the band gap. The highest occupied state originates from an elaborate mixture of the pz orbital at the Si and Bi dimer atoms, and the lowest unoccupied state has a ppσ* antibonding character derived from the Bi dimer atoms. For 1 ML coverage, there are no surface states in the fundamental bulk band gap. The highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied states, lying close to band edges, show a linear combination of the pz orbitals and ppσ* antibonding orbital characters, respectively, derived from the Bi dimer atoms.  相似文献

We report on the in situ observation of temperature-driven drastic morphology evolution and surface pre-melting of the Bi(0 0 1) nanofilm deposited on the Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 surface by use of spot-profile-analyzing low-energy electron diffraction (SPA-LEED). Surface step density of the single-crystalline, epitaxial Bi(0 0 1) film decreases above 350 K in a critical manner. On annealed Bi(0 0 1) films, we have detected surface pre-melting with a transition temperature of 350 K, which yields reversible diffraction intensity drop in addition to the harmonic Debye-Waller behavior. The observed surface flattening of the as-deposited film is driven by the increased amount of mobile adatoms created through the surface pre-melting.  相似文献

We investigated Bi thin film growth on Ge(1 1 1) by using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). In the submonolayer regime, adsorbed Bi atoms form patches of the (2×1) structure. However, the structure does not grow to a long-range order. Following the formation of a (1×1) monolayer (ML) film, two-dimensional (1 1 0)-orientated Bi islands grow. The film orientation changes from (1 1 0) to (1 1 1) at 6-10 ML. The (1 1 0)-oriented Bi film shows a six-domain LEED pattern with missing spots, associated with a glide-line symmetry. The hexagonal (1 1 1) film at 14 ML has a lattice constant 2% smaller than bulk Bi(1 1 1).  相似文献

Epitaxial TiCxOy thin films were grown on MgO (0 0 1) substrates by using pulsed laser deposition method. High-resolution X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to examine crystallinity and microstructure of epitaxial TiCxOy film on MgO. The chemical composition of the film is determined to be x ∼ 0.47 and y ∼ 0.69 by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy revealed that the surface of TiCxOy film is very smooth with roughness of 0.18 nm. The resistivity of the TiCxOy film measured by four-point-probe method was about 137 μ Ω cm.  相似文献

We have used Low-Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM) to study the formation and structure of the surface alloy of Bi on the Cu(1 1 1) surface. As a function of Bi coverage we find a progression from a dilute surface alloy to a structure, which coexists with a Bi overlayer when the Bi coverage exceeds 1/3 ML. At a temperature of 401 K, an unusual formation of alloy domains is observed. The origin of this effect is traced down to the mobility of Bi adatoms, which is found to strongly depend on the Bi coverage of the surface alloy on which they reside.  相似文献

The impingement and interdiffusion of adsorbed Pb and Bi layers spreading from separated 3D pure bulk sources on Cu(1 0 0) has been studied, at T = 513 K, by in situ scanning Auger microscopy. When the leading edges of the pure Pb and Bi diffusion profiles impinge, they both consist of low-coverage lattice gas surface alloyed phases. In these low-coverage phases, Pb displaces surface alloyed Bi and the point of intersection of the profiles drifts towards the Bi source. These features lead to the conclusion that Pb atoms are more strongly bound at surface alloyed sites in Cu(1 0 0) than Bi atoms. Once the total coverage (Pb + Bi) on the substrate reaches about one monolayer, Pb and Bi are dealloyed from the substrate, and the interdiffusion profiles become essentially symmetric. Pb and Bi mix in all proportions, with an interdiffusion coefficient of ∼10−13 m2/s. This is considerably smaller than the self-diffusion coefficients previously observed for pure Pb and Bi in their respective high-coverage phases, indicating that the mechanism of interdiffusion is different from that of self-diffusion. As interdiffusion proceeds, the point of intersection of the Pb and Bi profiles reverses its drift direction, leading to the conclusion that binding of Bi atoms to the Cu(1 0 0) substrate is stronger than that of Pb atoms in the highest-coverage surface dealloyed layers.  相似文献

Lead (Pb) has been a prototypical system to study diffusion and reconstruction of silicon surfaces. However, there is a discrepancy in literature regarding the critical coverage at which island formation takes place in the Stranski-Krastanov (S-K) mode. We address this issue by studying the initial stages of evolution of the Pb/Si(1 1 1)7 × 7 system by careful experiments in ultra-high vacuum with in situ characterization by auger electron spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction. We have adsorbed Pb onto clean Si(1 1 1 )7 × 7 surface with sub-monolayer control at different flux rates of 0.05 ML/min, 0.14 ML/min and 0.22 ML/min, at room temperature. The results clearly show that the coverage of the Pb adlayer before the onset of 3D Pb islands in the S-K mode depends on the flux rates. LEED results show the persistence of the (7 × 7) substrate reconstruction until the onset of the island formation, while EELS results do not show any intermixing at the interface. This suggests that the flux rates influence the kinetics of growth and the passivation of dangling bonds to result in the observed rate-dependent adlayer coverages.  相似文献

The magnetic structure of planar epitaxial microstructures Fe (0 0 1) fabricated as rectangles and crosses of 200 nm to 20 μm sizes was studied using magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic calculations. Most characteristic micromagnetic ground states were examined. The effect of microstructure sizes and orientation, with respect to the crystallographic axes, on the magnetic structure was considered. It was found that the micromagnetic ground state is a sequence of vortices or a diamond structure and also the Landau structure when the long microstructure axis is parallel to the easy axis of magnetization (EAM). When the microstructure sizes become smaller than 0.5 μm, micromagnetic states convert to a quasisingle-domain state. In microstructures oriented along the hard axis of magnetization in the film plane, micromagnetic ground states display either a concertina structure or a sequence of vortices and antivortices. In cross-shaped microstructures, the magnetic structure of the arms of the cross was found to be similar to that observed in rectangular microstructures of the same size and orientation relative to the crystallographic axes. However, the magnetic structure of the central part of the cross is not a superposition of the magnetic structures extended from the arms. It is determined by the EAM direction.  相似文献

We have investigated the nucleation and evolution of germanium (Ge) nanodot (ND)s taking place while depositing Ge onto the silicon (Si) (1 1 1) surfaces with ultra-thin Si oxide films by using ultra-high vacuum in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy in the profile-imaging geometry. Various types of growth phenomena such as nucleation, growth and coalescence of Ge NDs have successfully been observed. The results show that the growth phenomena of the Ge NDs are dramatically rapid after their size reaches the size of the critical nucleus. The critical nucleus size estimated from a model using the cohesive energy of the Ge NDs has been consistent with observed one.  相似文献

Growth behavior of thin Ag films on Si substrates at room temperature has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and reflection high energy electron diffraction. In the layer-plus-island growth Ag islands show strongly preferred atomic scale heights and flat top. At low coverage (1 ML), islands containing two atomic layers of Ag are overwhelmingly formed. At higher coverages island height distribution shows strong peaks at relative heights corresponding to an even number (2, 4, 6, …) of Ag atomic layers. Beyond some coverage the height preference vanishes due to the appearance of screw dislocations and spiral growth.  相似文献

We provide a mini review of recent theoretical investigations of nanostructure formation aided by self-organised Bi nanolines on the Si(0 0 1) surface. It is suggested that hydrogen-passivated single-domain Si(0 0 1) produced by the formation of defect-free, hundreds of nm long, and 1.2-1.5 nm wide Bi nanolines provides an appealing template with preferential sites for adsorption of other elements. Based on ab initio pseudopotential calculations it is suggested that using the Bi nanoline template it should be possible to grow the following structures: mixed Ge-Si dimer structures on the Si(0 0 1) terrace between two neighbouring Bi nanolines; small In nanoclusters along the nanoline; and line and cluster structures of Fe atoms with novel electronic and magnetic properties.  相似文献

Evolution of Si (1 0 0) surface under 100 keV Ar+ ion irradiation at oblique incidence has been studied. The dynamics of surface erosion by ion beam is investigated using detailed analysis of atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. During an early stage of sputtering, formation of almost uniformly distributed nano-dots occurs on Si surface. However, the late stage morphology is characterized by self-organization of surface into a regular ripple pattern. Existing theories of ripple formation have been invoked to provide an insight into surface rippling.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of epitaxial ZnO thin films grown on (0 0 0 1) sapphire substrate were investigated by nanoindentation with a Berkovich tip and compared with that of bulk ZnO single crystal. In all indents on ZnO film a single discontinuity (‘pop-in’) in the load versus indentation depth data was observed at a specific depth of between 13 and 16 nm. In bulk ZnO, however only 65% of indents showed pop-in event at a specific depth of between 12 and 20 nm. The mechanism responsible for the ‘pop-in’ event in the epitaxial ZnO thin films as well as in bulk ZnO was attributed to the sudden propagation of dislocations, which had been pinned down by pre-existing defects, along the pyramidal and basal {0 0 0 1} planes (cross slip). The elastic modulus and hardness of the epitaxial ZnO thin films were determined to be 154 ± 5 and 8.7 ± 0.2 GPa, respectively, at an indentation depth of 30 nm.  相似文献

We have studied the growth of Ag on Ge/Si(1 1 1) substrates. The Ge/Si(1 1 1) substrates were prepared by depositing one monolayer (ML) of Ge on Si(1 1 1)-(7 × 7) surfaces. Following Ge deposition the reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) pattern changed to a (1 × 1) pattern. Ge as well as Ag deposition was carried out at 550 °C. Ag deposition on Ge/Si(1 1 1) substrates up to 10 ML has shown a prominent (√3 × √3)-R30° RHEED pattern along with a streak structure from Ag(1 1 1) surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows the formation of Ag islands along with a large fraction of open area, which presumably has the Ag-induced (√3 × √3)-R30° structure on the Ge/Si(1 1 1) surface. X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments show the presence of only (1 1 1) peak of Ag indicating epitaxial growth of Ag on Ge/Si(1 1 1) surfaces. The possibility of growing a strain-tuned (tensile to compressive) Ag(1 1 1) layer on Ge/Si(1 1 1) substrates is discussed.  相似文献

Using surface X-ray diffraction, we have determined the structure of three different sub-monolayer phases of Bi on Cu(1 1 1). In contrast to an early report, we find that at a coverage of 1/3 monolayer a substitutional surface alloy is formed with a (√3 × √3)R30° unit cell. For increasing coverage, de-alloying occurs, leading to an overlayer structure at a coverage of 0.5 ML in which the Bi atoms form zigzag chains. The surface contains three domains of this phase. Finally, at a slightly higher coverage of 0.53 ML, the unit cell is compressed in one direction, leading to a uniaxial-incommensurate phase with three rotational domains. The structure determination includes relaxations in the topmost layers and therefore allows a detailed comparison of the most important bond distances. This shows that an increased charge density of the Cu(1 1 1) surface is the main driving force for the different phases.  相似文献
