Methyl mercaptoacetate (MA) on Cu(1 1 1) surface was investigated using synchrotron radiation-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. MA adsorbs on the surface via thiolate formation and weak interaction of the carbonyl group with the surface. Two different adsorption states previously reported for methanethiolate and ethanethiolate were confirmed, besides atomic sulfur. NEXAFS measurements support gauche-type conformation of MA whose skeleton lies on the surface.  相似文献

Adsorption of purine DNA bases (guanine and adenine) on Cu(1 1 0) was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), and density-functional theory (DFT) calculation. At coverages near 0.2 monolayers, Angular-resolved NEXAFS analysis revealed that adenine adsorbates lie almost flat and that guanine adsorbates are tilted up on the surface with the purine ring parallel to the atom rows of Cu(1 1 0). Referring to the previous studies on pyrimidine DNA bases [M. Furukawa, H. Fujisawa, S. Katano, H. Ogasawara, Y. Kim, T. Komeda, A. Nilsson, M. Kawai, Surf. Sci. 532-535 (2003) 261], the isomerization of DNA bases on Cu(1 1 0) was found to play an important role in the adsorption geometry. Guanine, thymine and cytosine adsorption have an amine-type nitrogen next to a carbonyl group, which is dehydrogenated into imine nitrogen on Cu(1 1 0). These bases are bonded by the inherent portion of -NH-CO- altered by conversion into enolic form and dehydrogenation. Adenine contains no CO group and is bonded to Cu(1 1 0) by participation of the inherent amine parts, resulting in nearly flatly-lying position.  相似文献

The adsorption of alanine on Cu{1 1 0} was studied by a combination of near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT). Large chemical shifts in the C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s XP spectra were found between the alanine multilayer and the chemisorbed and pseudo-(3 × 2) alaninate layers. From C, N, and O K-shell NEXAFS spectra the tilt angles of the carboxylate group (≈26° in plane with respect to and ≈45° out of plane) and the C-N bond angle with respect to could be determined for the pseudo-(3 × 2) overlayer. Using this information three adsorption geometries could be eliminated from five p(3 × 2) structures which lead to almost identical heats of adsorption in the DFT calculations between 1.40 and 1.47 eV/molecule. Due to the small energy difference between the remaining two structures it is not unlikely that these coexist on the surface at room temperature.  相似文献

The adsorption of naphthalene, vacuum deposited on a Ag(1 0 0) surface, was comprehensively investigated by means of low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), temperature-programmed thermal desorption (TPD) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and polarization-dependent near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy in the mono- and multilayer regime. A growth of long-range ordered monolayer at 140 K is observed with LEED. The polarization-dependent C 1s NEXAFS shows that the naphthalene molecules in the monolayer lie almost parallel to the Ag(1 0 0) surface. With increasing film thickness, the molecular orientation turns to upright position. Furthermore, NEXAFS measurements show that in the multilayer regime the molecular orientation depends on the substrate temperature during deposition.  相似文献

In this study we investigate the influence of alloying on the reactivity and bonding of oxygen on α-Cu-Al(5 at.%)(1 0 0) oriented single crystal surfaces by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultra-violet spectroscopy (UPS) and low energy ion scattering (LEIS) spectroscopy, at room temperature. It was found that alloying results in an enhanced reactivity of both Cu and Al sites in comparison with the pure metals. According to adsorption curves calculated from XPS, saturation of the alloy surface occurs for exposures of ∼15 L. At saturation the total amount of adsorbed oxygen is similar for the alloy and pure copper surfaces. It was determined that first mostly Al sites are oxidized, followed by simultaneous oxidation of Cu and Al sites. At saturation the amount of oxygen bonded to Cu sites is ∼1.7 larger then that bonded to Al sites. From a comparison of the XPS and LEIS data analysis as a function of oxygen exposure it was found that oxidation of α-Cu-Al(5 at.%)(1 0 0) alloy is a multi-stage process with fast and slow stages. These stages involve an interplay of chemisorption, sub-surface diffusion of oxygen and Al segregation. UPS measurements show an increase in the work function of the alloy surface with oxygen adsorption. This is a contrast to pure Cu surfaces where the work function decreases at the initial stages of oxidation followed by an increase with oxygen exposure. Annealing to 400 °C drives the oxidized alloy surface into its thermodynamic state resulting in the formation of an aluminum oxide layer. Possible mechanisms to explain the enhanced reactivity of the alloy surface compared to that of pure copper are suggested and discussed.  相似文献

Surface X-ray diffraction has been used to investigate the structure of TiO2(1 1 0)(3 × 1)-S. In concert with existing STM and photoemission data it is shown that on formation of a (3 × 1)-S overlayer, sulphur adsorbs in a position bridging 6-fold titanium atoms, and all bridging oxygens are lost. Sulphur adsorption gives rise to significant restructuring of the substrate, detected as deep as the fourth layer of the selvedge. The replacement of a bridging oxygen atom with sulphur gives rise to a significant motion of 6-fold co-ordinated titanium atoms away from the adsorbate, along with a concomitant rumpling of the second substrate layer.  相似文献

The initial growth of Pt on the Ni(1 1 0)-(3 × 1)-O and NiO(1 1 0) surfaces has been studied by coaxial impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (CAICISS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Prior to Pt deposition, the atomic structure of the near-surface regions of the Ni(1 1 0)-(3 × 1)-O and NiO(1 1 0) structures were studied using CAICISS, finding changes to the interlayer spacings due to the adsorption of oxygen. Deposition of Pt on the Ni(1 1 0)-(3 × 1)-O surface led to a random substitutional alloy in the near-surface region at Pt coverages both below and in excess of 1 ML. In contrast, when the surface was treated with 1800 L of atomic oxygen in order to form a NiO(1 1 0) surface, a thin Pt layer was formed upon room temperature Pt deposition. XPS and LEED data are presented throughout to support the CAICISS observations.  相似文献

In this work we show the adsorption of acetonitrile (CH3CN) and acrylonitrile (CH2CHCN) on Si(0 0 1)-2 × 1 at room temperature by increasing the molecular doses. Especially, by means of XPS and LEED data, we stress the action of these molecules on the silicon surface locating the dangling-bonds quasi-saturation within 10 L. The shortage of nitrogen XPS signal and some anomalies in carbon spectra point to an invading action from a traditional X-ray source (Al-Kα line) against chemisorbed molecules. In particular, we think that a long exposure to this radiation could break carbon-silicon bonds changing some adsorption geometries and making desorb molecular fragments.  相似文献

The interaction between a semi-large aromatic hydrocarbon compound (perylene) and the TiO2(1 1 0)-(1 × 1) surface under ultra high vacuum conditions has been probed by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) methods. UPS measurements of the adsorbate system have been compared with an experimental UPS spectrum of perylene in the gas phase and a calculated spectrum obtained by means of density functional theory (DFT) methods. NEXAFS results of perylene molecules adsorbed on TiO2(1 1 0)-(1 × 1) were compared with data from an α-phase perylene single crystal. A novel analysis of the valence data has been employed to show that no strong chemical interaction takes place between perylene and the TiO2(1 1 0)-(1 × 1) surface. Furthermore, angle-dependent NEXAFS measurements and the growth curve results suggest that the perylene molecules are oriented flat down onto the TiO2 substrate due to weak van der Waals interactions.  相似文献

The rutile (1 1 0)-aqueous solution interface structure was measured in deionized water (DIW) and 1 molal (m) RbCl + RbOH solution (pH 12) at 25 °C with the X-ray crystal truncation rod method. The rutile surface in both solutions consists of a stoichiometric (1 × 1) surface unit mesh with the surface terminated by bridging oxygen (BO) and terminal oxygen (TO) sites, with a mixture of water molecules and hydroxyl groups (OH) occupying the TO sites. An additional hydration layer is observed above the TO site, with three distinct water adsorption sites each having well-defined vertical and lateral locations. Rb+ specifically adsorbs at the tetradentate site between the TO and BO sites, replacing one of the adsorbed water molecules at the interface. There is no further ordered water structure observed above the hydration layer. Structural displacements of atoms at the oxide surface are sensitive to the solution composition. Ti atom displacements from their bulk lattice positions, as large as 0.05 Å at the rutile (1 1 0)-DIW interface, decay in magnitude into the crystal with significant relaxations that are observable down to the fourth Ti-layer below the surface. A systematic outward shift was observed for Ti atom locations below the BO rows, while a systematic inward displacement was found for Ti atoms below the TO rows. The Ti displacements were mostly reduced in contact with the RbCl solution at pH 12, with no statistically significant relaxations in the fourth layer Ti atoms. The distance between the surface 5-fold Ti atoms and the oxygen atoms of the TO site is 2.13 ± 0.03 Å in DIW and 2.05 ± 0.03 Å in the Rb+ solution, suggesting molecular adsorption of water at the TO site to the rutile (1 1 0) surface in DIW, while at pH 12, adsorption at the TO site is primarily in the form of an adsorbed hydroxyl group.  相似文献

We have studied the interface and thin film formation of the organic molecular semiconductor 3,4,9,10 perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) on clean and on hydrogen passivated Si(0 0 1) surfaces. The studies were made by means of high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HRXPS), near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). On the passivated surface the LEED pattern is somewhat diffuse but reveals that the molecules grow in several ordered domains with equivalent orientations to the substrate. NEXAFS shows that the molecules are lying flat on the substrate. The Si 2p XPS line shape is not affected when the film is deposited so it can be concluded that the interaction at the interface between PTCDA and the substrate is weak. The evolution of the film formation appears to be homogeneous for the first monolayer with a nearly complete coverage of flat lying molecules based on the XPS attenuation. For layer thickness of 0.5-2 monolayers (ML) the molecules start to form islands, attracting the molecules in between, leaving the substrate partly uncovered. For thicker films there is a Stranski-Krastanov growth mode with thick islands and a monolayer thick film in between. For the clean surface the ordering of the film is much lower and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) of the molecular orbitals have only a small dependence of the emission angle. NEXAFS shows that the molecules do not lie flat on the surface and also reveal a chemical interaction at the interface.  相似文献

The orientation of hexafluorobenzene (C6F6) on the Cu(1 1 1) surface has been determined for different coverages with the help of near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The adsorption geometry and the bonding mode of C6F6 differ significantly in comparison to its hydrocarbon analog C6H6. C6F6 is found to adsorb on Cu(1 1 1) with the ring plane parallel to the surface for coverages below 10 ML. Next to the distinct multilayer, bilayer and monolayer phases we also present evidence of sub-monolayer (i.e., 1/2 ML) coverage with different electronic structure. These findings are explained in a phenomenological model based on fluorine’s property as a σ-acceptor and a π-donor and the resulting bond polarization within the molecule, which is stabilized by image-potential screening within the substrate.  相似文献

The adsorption of alanine is studied on a Pd(1 1 1) surface using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). It is found that alanine adsorbs into the second and subsequent layers prior to completion of the first monolayer for adsorption at ∼250 K, while at ∼300 K, alanine adsorbs almost exclusively into the first monolayer with almost no second-layer adsorption. Alanine adsorbs onto the Pd(1 1 1) surface in its zwitterionic form, while the multilayer contains about 30-35% neutral alanine, depending on coverage. Alanine is thermally stable on the Pd(1 1 1) surface to slightly above room temperature, and decomposes almost exclusively by scission of the CCOO bond to desorb CO2 and CO from the COO moiety, and the remaining fragment yields ethylamine and HCN.  相似文献

An extensive search for possible structural models of the (2 × 1)-reconstructed rutile TiO2(0 1 1) surface was carried out by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A number of models were identified that have much lower surface energies than the previously-proposed ‘titanyl’ and ‘microfaceting’ models. These new structures were tested with surface X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and voltage-dependent STM measurements. The model that is (by far) energetically most stable shows also the best agreement with SXRD data. Calculated STM images agree with the experimental ones for appropriate tunneling conditions. In contrast to previously-proposed models, this structure is not of missing-row type; because of its similarity to the fully optimized brookite TiO2(0 0 1) surface, we call it the ‘brookite (0 0 1)-like’ model. The new surface structure exhibits two different types of undercoordinated oxygen and titanium atoms, and is, in its stoichiometric form, predicted to be rather inert towards the adsorption of probe molecules.  相似文献

The room temperature (RT) adsorption of 1,2-difluorobenzene (1,2-DFB), 1,2-dichlorobenzene (1,2-DCB) and 1,2-dibromobenzene (1,2-DBB) on Si(1 0 0)2 × 1 have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Both XPS and TPD data show that the relative degree of dissociative to associative adsorption of the dihalogenated benzene (DXB) appears to increase with decreasing electronegativity of the halogen atom (X). In particular, the C 1s intensity ratios for the C-H and C-Si components to the C-X component are found to be 2, 3 and 9.6 for 1,2-DFB, 1,2-DCB and 1,2-DBB, respectively. These results indicate that 1,2-DFB, like benzene, exclusively adsorbs molecularly as a difluorocyclohexadiene adspecies on Si(1 0 0)2 × 1 while 1,2-DBB adsorbs predominantly with double debromination to form 1,2-phenylene. The majority of 1,2-DCB (75%) is found to adsorb molecularly, with the rest (25%) undergone single or double dechlorination to form chlorophenyl and phenylene, respectively. All three DXB molecules appear to have similar coverage as benzene. The two molecular desorption features for 1,2-DFB and 1,2-DCE are observed with desorption maxima at 460 K and 540 K similar to those found for benzene, which suggests that the dihalocyclohexadiene adstructures involve similar bonding through the benzene ring. In accord with the XPS data, no molecular desorption feature is observed for 1,2-DBB on the 2 × 1 surface. Further decomposition of the resulting phenylene adstructures is evident from the desorption fragment, C2H2, found at 610 K and 740 K. Recombinative desorption of HCl and HBr above 880 K are also found for 1,2-DCB and 1,2-DBB, respectively. The observed differences between associative and dissociative adsorption for the three DXB adsorbates could be attributed not only to the large difference in the C-X bond strength but also to the relative contributions from inductively withdrawing and resonantly donating electrons exerted by the halogen (X) atoms to the benzene ring.  相似文献

CO adsorption on a sulfur covered cobalt surface at 185 K has been studied using XPS, TDS, LEED, and WF measurements. As in the case of CO adsorption on the clean Co(0 0 0 1) surface, CO adsorbs and desorbs molecularly and no dissociation was observed. The saturation coverage of CO decreases linearly from 0.54 ML to 0.27 ML when the S pre-coverage increases to 0.25 ML. The WF increased during CO adsorption, but did not reach the value obtained for CO adsorption on the clean surface. The smaller work function change is explained by the reduced adsorption of CO on the sulfur-precovered surface. A reduction in the activation energy of desorption for CO from 113 kJ/mol to 88 kJ/mol was observed indicating weaker bonding of the CO molecules to the surface. The behavior of the CO/S/Co(0 0 0 1) system was explained by a combination of steric and electronic effects.  相似文献

Oxygen adsorption on the α-Mo2C(0 0 0 1) surface has been investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and valence photoelectron spectroscopy utilizing synchrotron radiation. It is found that oxygen adsorbs dissociatively at room temperature, and the adsorbed oxygen atoms interact with both Mo and C atoms to form an oxycarbide layer. As the O-adsorbed surface is heated at ≧800 K, the C-O bonds are broken and the adsorbed oxygen atoms are bound only to Mo atoms. Valence PES study shows that the oxygen adsorption induces a peculiar state around the Fermi level, which enhances the emission intensity at the Fermi edge in PES spectra.  相似文献

The nitrogen 1s near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra of the N2O adsorbed on Ag(1 1 0) have been studied by the multiple-scattering cluster (MSC) and self-consistent field (SCF) DV-Xα methods. Two adsorption models, in which the N2O molecule attached to the Ag substrate through the central nitrogen (NC) atom and the terminal nitrogen (NT) atom, respectively, have been checked up thoroughly. The MSC calculation and the R-factor analysis show that the N2O molecule is attached to the Ag substrate through the terminal nitrogen atom with the adsorption height h = 3.4 ± 0.1 Å. In the overlayer the N2O molecules arrange themselves into a tilted chain due to the interaction between the cations and the anions in the molecules. The physical cause of the resonances in the NEXAFS spectra mentioned above has been discussed by the DV-Xα method, which confirms the MSC calculations.  相似文献

In this work we present results from density functional theory (DFT) cluster studies to determine polarization-dependent near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra of the vanadyl termination of the V2O3(0 0 0 1) surface. The oxygen K edge spectra are calculated for the relaxed surface geometry where geometric parameters are taken from recent periodic DFT work. A detailed analysis of energetic peak positions, relative intensities, and final state orbitals allows a deep understanding of the complex angular dependence of the calculated spectra on the basis of the local binding environment of differently coordinated oxygen species. Further, our theoretical analysis can assign and explain various spectral details in the experimental NEXAFS data, in particular, those related to vanadyl oxygen. This allows us to support the experimentally suggested vanadyl surface termination.  相似文献

Proof-of-concept reactions were performed on GaN (0 0 0 1) surfaces to demonstrate surface termination with desired chemical groups using an olefin cross-metathesis reaction. To prepare the GaN surfaces for olefin metathesis, the surfaces were hydrogen terminated with hydrogen plasma, chlorine terminated with phosphorous pentachloride, and then terminated with an alkene group via a Grignard reaction. The olefin metathesis reaction then bound 7-bromo-1-heptene. The modified surfaces were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy, and water contact angle measurements following each step in the reaction scheme. The XPS data was used to qualitatively identify surface chemical species and to quantitatively determine molecular surface coverage. The bromine atom in 7-bromo-1-heptene served as a heteroatom for identification with XPS. The reaction scheme resulted in GaN substrates with a surface coverage of 0.10 monolayers and excellent stability towards oxidation when exposed to oxygen plasma.  相似文献
