We consider interpolation methods defined by positive definite functions on a locally compact group G. Estimates for the smallest and largest eigenvalue of the interpolation matrix in terms of the localization of the positive definite function on G are presented, and we provide a method to get positive definite functions explicitly on compact semisimple Lie groups. Finally, we apply our results to construct well-localized positive definite basis functions having nice stability properties on the rotation group SO(3).  相似文献

Summary We investigate the fundamentality of the set of all continuous ridge functions in the spaceC( n ) as well as inC(X) for a general Banach space,X. Both positive and negative results are obtained. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the fundamentality are given for certain sets of ridge functions inC( n ).  相似文献

In this paper we introduce and study a new sequence of positive linear operators acting on the space of Lebesgue-integrable functions on the unit interval. These operators are defined by means of continuous selections of Borel measures and generalize the Kantorovich operators. We investigate their approximation properties by presenting several estimates of the rate of convergence by means of suitable moduli of smoothness. Some shape preserving properties are also shown. In the first part of the paper we prove a decomposition theorem for positive definite functions (Theorem 2.3) generalizing a result of de Leeuw and Glicksberg. Using this theorem, we then show (Theorem 3.1) that certain norm dependent positive definite functions are automatically continuous at every point different from zero.  相似文献

We consider a generalization of entire functions of spherical exponential type on stratified groups. An analog of the Paley-Wiener theorem is given. We also show that every spectral entire function on a stratified group is uniquely determined by its values on some discrete subgroups. The main result of the article is reconstruction formula of spectral entire functions from their values on discrete subgroups using Lagrangian splines.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to study iterative schemes of Browder and Halpern types for a semigroup of nonexpansive mappings on a compact convex subset of a smooth (and strictly convex) Banach space with respect to a sequence of strongly asymptotic invariant means defined on an appropriate space of bounded real valued functions of the semigroup. Various applications to the additive semigroup of nonnegative real numbers and commuting pairs of nonexpansive mappings are also presented.  相似文献

We study strictly positive definite functions on the complex Hilbert sphere. A link between strict positive definiteness and (harmonic) polynomial interpolation on finite‐dimensional spheres is investigated. Sufficient conditions for strict positive definiteness are presented. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We show how conditionally negative definite functions on spheres coupled with strictly completely monotone functions (or functions whose derivative is strictly completely monotone) can be used for Hermite interpolation. The classes of functions thus obtained have the advantage over the strictly positive definite functions studied in [17] that closed form representations (as opposed to series expansions) are readily available. Furthermore, our functions include the historically significant spherical multiquadrics. Numerical results are also presented. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In this paper, we characterize compact groupsG as well as connected central topological groupsG for which the centreZ(L 1(G)) admits a finite universal Korovkin set. Also we prove that ifG is a non-connected central topological group which has a compact open normal subgroupK such thatG=KZ, thenZ(L 1(G)) admits a finite universal Korovkin set if is a finite-dimensional separable metric space or equivalentlyG is separable metrizable andG/K has finite torsion-free rank.  相似文献

Summary The problem of computing constrained spline functions, both for ideal data and noisy data, is considered. Two types of constriints are treated, namely convexity and convexity together with monotonity. A characterization result for constrained smoothing splines is derived. Based on this result a Newton-type algorithm is defined for computing the constrained spline function. Thereby it is possible to apply the constraints over a whole interval rather than at a discrete set of points. Results from numerical experiments are included.  相似文献

Angelesco systems of measures with Jacobi-type weights are considered. For such systems, strong asymptotics for the related multiple orthogonal polynomials are found as well as the Szeg?-type functions. In the procedure, an approach from the Riemann-Hilbert problem plays a fundamental role.  相似文献

Quasi-interpolation of radial basis functions on finite grids is a very useful strategy in approximation theory and its applications. A notable strongpoint of the strategy is to obtain directly the approximants without the need to solve any linear system of equations. For radial basis functions with Gaussian kernel, there have been more studies on the interpolation and quasi-interpolation on infinite grids. This paper investigates the approximation by quasi-interpolation operators with Gaussian kernel on the compact interval. The approximation errors for two classes of function with compact support sets are estimated. Furthermore, the approximation errors of derivatives of the approximants to the corresponding derivatives of the approximated functions are estimated. Finally, the numerical experiments are presented to confirm the accuracy of the approximations.  相似文献

The Fourier transform for Schwartz spaces on Chébli-Trimèche hypergroups is studied, leading to results on approximation to the identity for functions and distributions on the half-line. In particular it is shown that the heat and Poisson kernels on the half-line form approximate units in various function spaces. A characterization of the convolution of a tempered distribution and a Schwartz function is also given.  相似文献

Summary. Radial basis functions are used in the recovery step of finite volume methods for the numerical solution of conservation laws. Being conditionally positive definite such functions generate optimal recovery splines in the sense of Micchelli and Rivlin in associated native spaces. We analyse the solvability to the recovery problem of point functionals from cell average values with radial basis functions. Furthermore, we characterise the corresponding native function spaces and provide error estimates of the recovery scheme. Finally, we explicitly list the native spaces to a selection of radial basis functions, thin plate splines included, before we provide some numerical examples of our method. A flexible treatment of Gaussian quadrature formulas based on rational functions is given to evaluate the integral , when f is meromorphic in a neighborhood V of the interval I and W(x) is an ill-scaled weight function. Some numerical tests illustrate the power of this approach in comparison with Gautschi’s method.  相似文献

The behavior of the equioscillation points (alternants) for the error in best uniform approximation on [–1, 1] by rational functions of degreen is investigated. In general, the points of the alternants need not be dense in [–1, 1], even when approximation by rational functions of degree (m, n) is considered and asymptoticallym/n 1. We show, however, that if more thanO(logn) poles of the approximants stay at a positive distance from [–1, 1], then asymptotic denseness holds, at least for a subsequence. Furthermore, we obtain stronger distribution results when n (0 < 1) poles stay away from [–1, 1]. In the special case when a Markoff function is approximated, the distribution of the equioscillation points is related to the asymptotics for the degree of approximation. The research of this author was supported, in part, by NSF grant DMS 920-3659.  相似文献

Summary An analog of the well-known Jackson-Bernstein-Zygmund theory on best approximation by trigonometric polynomials is developed for approximation methods which use piecewise polynomial functions. Interpolation and best approximation by polynomial splines, Hermite and finite element functions are examples of such methods. A direct theorem is proven for methods which are stable, quasi-linear and optimally accurate for sufficiently smooth functions. These assumptions are known to be satisfied in many cases of practical interest. Under a certain additional assumption, on the family of meshes, an inverse theorem is proven which shows that the direct theorem is sharp. The work presented in this paper was supported by the ERDA Mathematics and Computing Laboratory, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, under Contract E(11-1)-3077 with the Energy Research and Development Administration.  相似文献

Summary The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach to smoothness of nonperiodic functions. We consider the space of continuous functions on [−1, 1] as well as the weighted Lp-space and introduce a modulus of smoothness that is based on an algebraic addition ⊕ defined on [−1, 1]. The present paper is mainly concerned with general properties and groundwork, whereas a second paper [4] is devoted to more complex properties, in particular to an equivalent K-functional and to the characterization of best algebraic approximation. Moreover the equivalence with the Butzer-Stens modulus will be shown there.  相似文献

In this article we consider a simple method of radial quasi-interpolation by polynomials on the unit sphere in ℝ3, and present rates of covergence for this method in Sobolev spaces of square integrable functions. We write the discrete Fourier series as a quasi-interpolant and hence obtain convergence rates, in the aforementioned Sobolev spaces, for the discrete Fourier projection. We also discuss some typical practical examples used in the context of spherical wavelets.  相似文献
