Constitutive modeling of ice in the high strain rate regime   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objective of the present work is to propose a constitutive model for ice by considering the influence of important parameters such as strain rate dependence and pressure sensitivity on the response of the material. In this regard, the constitutive model proposed by Carney et al. (2006) is considered as a starting basis and subsequently modified to incorporate the effect of brittle cracking within a continuum damage mechanics framework. The damage is taken to occur in the form of distributed cracking within the material during impact which is consistent with experimental observations. At the point of failure, the material is assumed to be fluid-like with deviatoric stress almost dropping down to zero. The constitutive model is implemented in a general purpose finite element code using an explicit formulation. Several single element tests under uniaxial tension and compression, as well as biaxial loading are conducted in order to understand the performance of the model. Few large size simulations are also performed to understand the capability of the model to predict brittle damage evolution in un-notched and notched three point bend specimens. The proposed model predicts lower strength under tensile loading as compared to compressive loading which is in tune with experimental observations. Further the model also asserts the strain rate dependency of the strength behavior under both compressive as well as tensile loading, which also corroborates well with experimental results.  相似文献

Following a framework of elastic degradation and damage previously proposed by the authors, an ‘extended’ formulation of orthotropic damage in initially isotropic materials, based on volumetric/deviatoric decomposition, is presented. The formulation is founded on the concept of energy equivalence and makes use of second-order symmetric tensor damage variables. It is characterized by fourth-order damage-effect tensors (relating nominal to effective stresses and strains) built from the underlying second-order damage tensors and decomposed in product-form in isotropic and anisotropic parts. The formulation is developed in two steps. First, secant relations are established. In the isotropic case, the model embeds a path parameter allowing to range between pure volumetric to pure deviatoric damage. With the two undamaged material constants this makes a total of three constant parameters plus an evolving scalar damage variable, giving rise to a four-parameter model with two varying isotropic material coefficients. In the anisotropic case, the model is still characterized by the same three material constants plus three evolving variables which are the principal values of a second-order damage tensor. This leads to a six-parameter restricted form of orthotropic damage. In the second step, damage evolution rules are formulated in terms of a pseudo-logarithmic rate of damage. This allows to define meaningful conjugate forces that constitute a feasible space in which loading functions and damage evolution rules can be defined. The present ‘extended’ formulation is closed by the derivation of the tangent stiffness.  相似文献

The present paper reports and rationalizes the use of Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM) to describe the Mullins effect in elastomers. Thermodynamics of rubber-like hyperelastic materials with isotropic damage is considered. Since it is demonstrated that stress-softening is not strictly speaking a damage phenomenon, the limitations of the CDM approach are highlighted. Moreover, connections with two-network-based constitutive models proposed by other authors are exhibited through the choice of both the damage criterion and the measure of deformation. Experimental data are used to establish the evolution equation of the stress-softening variable, and the choice of the maximum deformation endured previously by the material as the damage criterion is revealed as questionable. Nevertheless, the present model agrees qualitatively well with experiments except to reproduce the strain-hardening phenomenon that takes place as reloading paths rejoin the primary loading path. Finally, the numerical implementation highlights the influence of loading paths on material response and thereby demonstrates the importance of considering the Mullins effect in industrial design.  相似文献

This paper presents a three-dimensional model to simulate the behavior of plain concrete structures that are predominantly tensile loaded. This model, based on continuum damage mechanics, uses a symmetric second-order tensor as the damage variable, which permits the simulation of orthotropic degradation. The validity of the first and the second law of thermodynamics, as well as the validity of the principle of maximum dissipation rate, are required. That is attained by defining the loading functions in quantities that are thermodynamically conjugated to the damage variables. Furthermore, the evolution rule is derived by maximizing the energy dissipation rate. This formulation is regularized by means of the fracture energy approach by introducing a characteristic length. The basic and new idea in this paper is that the characteristic length should always coincide with the width of the dissipative zone appearing in the simulation. The integration points with increasing damage in one loading increment are the dissipative zone in this loading increment. The main objective of this paper is the convenient formulation of approaches for the characteristic length in order to attain the coincidence of the characteristic length with the width of the dissipative zone appearing in the simulation. It is shown that simulations are objective and yield good results if the requirement is fulfilled that the characteristic length in the constitutive law coincides with the width of the dissipative zone in the simulation.  相似文献

This note presents a damage model for fibre-composite materials based in the approach by Matzenmiller et al. [Matzenmiller, A., Lubliner, J., Taylor, R.L., 1995. A constitutive model for anisotropic damage in fiber-composites. Mech. Mater. 20, 125]. In this work, the model is developed in a three-dimensional context with modified formulation for the constitutive law and damage evolution. An orthotropic composite subjected to mixed failure modes is assumed in this development. Its formulation and implementation details are provided.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to retrieve all the anisotropic plastic constitutive parameters from uniaxial loading. A complex geometry which can provide very heterogeneous stress states in a uniaxial tensile test was chosen for steel sheet specimens. A digital image correlation technique was used for the full-field heterogeneous strain measurement. The orthotropic Hill1948 yield criterion with Swift isotropic hardening was adopted as an elasto-plastic constitutive model. The virtual fields method (VFM) was employed as an inverse analytical tool to determine the constitutive parameters. All the parameters were successfully identified using the VFM by combining two tensile test results obtained in rolling and transverse directions.  相似文献

This paper presents a finite strain constitutive model to predict a complex elastoplastic deformation behaviour that involves very high pressures and shockwaves in orthotropic materials using an anisotropic Hill’s yield criterion by means of the evolving structural tensors. The yield surface of this hyperelastic–plastic constitutive model is aligned uniquely within the principal stress space due to the combination of Mandel stress tensor and a new generalised orthotropic pressure. The formulation is developed in the isoclinic configuration and allows for a unique treatment for elastic and plastic orthotropy. An isotropic hardening is adopted to define the evolution of plastic orthotropy. The important feature of the proposed hyperelastic–plastic constitutive model is the introduction of anisotropic effect in the Mie–Gruneisen equation of state (EOS). The formulation is further combined with Grady spall failure model to predict spall failure in the materials. The proposed constitutive model is implemented as a new material model in the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)-DYNA3D code of UTHM’s version, named Material Type 92 (Mat92). The combination of the proposed stress tensor decomposition and the Mie–Gruneisen EOS requires some modifications in the code to reflect the formulation of the generalised orthotropic pressure. The validation approach is also presented in this paper for guidance purpose. The \({\varvec{\psi }}\) tensor used to define the alignment of the adopted yield surface is first validated. This is continued with an internal validation related to elastic isotropic, elastic orthotropic and elastic–plastic orthotropic of the proposed formulation before a comparison against range of plate impact test data at 234, 450 and \({\mathrm {895\,ms}}^{\mathrm {-1}}\) impact velocities is performed. A good agreement is obtained in each test.  相似文献

Based on the thermodynamic theory, an orthotropic damage constitutive model was developed to describe the nonlinear mechanical behavior of C/SiC composites. The different nonlinear kinematic and isotropic hardening functions were adopted to describe accurately the damage evolution processes. The damage variables were defined with the damaged modulus and the initial undamaged modulus on energy equivalence principle. The initial orthotropy and damage coupling were presented in the damage yield function. Tensile and in-plane shear loading and unloading tests were performed, and a good agreement between the model and the experimental results was achieved.  相似文献

The main objective of this paper is to study the evolution of the necking zone in a flat specimen during a tensile test. Two approaches are used and compared:
  • –An experimental investigation of the strain rate distribution with Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI).
  • –A numerical analysis with a thermodynamically consistent constitutive model that couples strongly isotropic continuum damage (CDM) and the elastoplastic behavior.
It is shown that strain rate maps are, for both approaches, relevant to investigate the development of the X-shape pattern that occurs during necking evolution. In particular, this pattern can be clearly observed on maps of the minimum determinant of the acoustic tensor. It appears even when damage values are low and the problem is still elliptic. It is shown that ESPI and CDM modeling are able to give a coherent picture of the phenomena that occur during neck development from the onset of instability to localize necking, in particular on localization bands angles and widths. In particular, physically meaningful information which is seldom considered such as band width evolution or strain rate distribution will be extracted from the analysis.  相似文献

An experimental investigation is performed and analyzed in order to examine the onset and evolution of damage processes in thin isotropic paper sheets made of mechanical pulp. A microscopy technique has been used to estimate the relative fraction of bond and fibre breaks. It has been found that the active damage mechanism is bond failure, hence supporting the assumption of an isotropic scalar valued damage variable. All experiments have been performed by simultaneous with the mechanical loading monitoring the acoustic emission activity. Three different experimental setups have been designed offering the possibility to analyze the influence of stress gradients, as well as different levels of the ratios between the in-plane normal stresses, on the onset of damage. It is concluded that stress gradients in the paper specimens have a large influence on the onset of damage. When stress gradients are present a non-local theory has to be used in the analysis. In this way compliance with an isotropic damage criterion is achieved. The characteristic length, determining the gradient sensitivity, has been found to be of the same order of magnitude as some average fibre length. To study the evolution of the damage processes, wide and short specimens have been loaded in tension resulting in stable damage processes. With the assumptions made regarding the mechanical behavior of the paper material after onset of damage, the damage and the cumulative number of acoustic events curve correlates very well. The experimentally obtained data is used to determine material parameters in a proposed damage evolution law. It is found that the assumed damage evolution law can, for isotropic paper materials with bond rupture as the prevalent failure mechanism, be further simplified as only one specific material dependent damage evolution parameter has to be determined in experiments.  相似文献

Paper and paperboard generally exhibit anisotropic and non-linear mechanical material behaviour. In this work, the development of an orthotropic elastic–plastic constitutive model, suitable for modelling of the material behaviour of paper is presented. The anisotropic material behaviour is introduced into the model by orthotropic elasticity and an isotropic plasticity equivalent transformation tensor. A parabolic stress–strain relation is adopted to describe the hardening of the material. The experimental and numerical procedures for evaluation of the required material parameters for the model are described. Uniaxial tensile testing in three different inplane material directions provides the calibration of the material parameters under plane stress conditions. The numerical implementation of the material model is presented and the model is shown to perform well in agreement with experimentally observed mechanical behaviour of paper.  相似文献

A fatigue damage model is developed to account for the damage accumulation process in bridges subjected to in-field traffic loading. Continuous damage mechanics (CDM) is applied to formulate damage kinetic constitutive equations. On-line strain gauge measurements are then made on the orthotropic steel deck structure of the Tsing Ma Bridge, an essential portion of the transport network for the Hong Kong airport. Fatigue life prediction analyses are then made. The results agree well with those obtained by the tests.  相似文献

One of fundamental but difficult problems in damage mechanics is the formulation of the effective constitutive relation of microcrack-weakened brittle or quasi-brittle materials under complex loading, especially when microcrack interaction is taken into account. The combination of phenomenological and micromechanical damage mechanics is a promising approach to constructing an applicable damage model with a firm physical foundation. In this paper, a quasi-micromechanical model is presented for simulating the constitutive response of microcrack-weakened materials under complex loading. The microcracking damage is characterized in terms of the orientation domain of microcrack growth (DMG) as well as a scalar microcrack density parameter. The DMG describes the complex damage and its evolution associated with microcrack growth, while the scalar microcrack density factor defining the isotropic magnitude of damage yields an easy calculation of the effects of microcrack interaction on effective elastic moduli. Materials get damaged under shear deformations. Edge cracking is one of the most serious damage to the metal rolling industry, which is caused by the shear damage process and the evolution of anisotropy. To investigate the physics of the edge cracking process, simulations of a shear deformation for an orthotropic plastic material are performed. To perform the simulation, this paper proposes an elasto-aniso-plastic constitutive model that takes into account the evolution of the orthotropic axes by using a bases rotation formula, which is based upon the slip process in the plastic deformation. It is found through the shear simulation that the void can grow in shear deformations due to the evolution of anisotropy and that stress triaxiality in shear deformations of (induced) anisotropic metals can develop as high as in the uniaxial tension deformation of isotropic materials, which increases void volume. This echoes the same physics found through a crystal plasticity based damage model that porosity evolves due to the grain-to-grain interaction. The evolution of stress components, stress triaxiality and the direction of the orthotropic axes in shear deformations are discussed.  相似文献

Based on pair functional potentials, Cauchy-Born rule and slip mechanism, a material model assembling with spring-bundle components, a cubage component and slip components is established to describe the elasto-plastic damage constitutive relation under finite deformation. The expansion/shrink, translation and distortion of yield surfaces can be calculated based on the hardening rule and Bauschinger effect defined on the slip component level. Both kinematic and isotropic hardening are included. Numerical simulations and predictions under tension, torsion, and combined tension-torsion proportional/non-proportional loading are performed to obtain the evolution of subsequent yield surfaces and elastic constants and compare with two sets of experimental data in literature, one for a very low work hardening aluminum alloy Al 6061-T6511, and another for a very high work hardening aluminum alloy annealed 1100 Al. The feature of the yield surface in shape change, which presents a sharp front accompanied by a blunt rear under proportional loading, is described by the latent hardening and Bauschinger effect of slip components. Further, the evolution law of subsequent yield surfaces under different proportional loading paths is investigated in terms of their equivalence. The numerical simulations under non-proportional loading conditions for annealed 1100 Al are performed, and the subsequent yield surfaces exhibit mixed cross effect because the kinematic hardening and isotropic hardening follow different evolution tendency when loading path changes. The results of non-proportional loading demonstrate that the present model has the ability to address the issue of complex loading due to the introduction of state variables on slip components. Moreover, as an elasto-plastic damage constitutive model, the present model can also reflect the variation of elastic constants through damage defined on the spring-bundle components.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental and numerical characterization of ductile damage evolution in steels subjected to large plastic deformations. To this end, a set of tensile tests combining load–unload tensile cycles is firstly carried out in order to evaluate the deterioration exhibited by the Young’s modulus for increasing levels of plastic deformation. This task allows, in turn, to derive the characteristic parameters involved in a well-established evolution equation for the isotropic damage variable. In this context, a new damage identification procedure is presented. Different aspects of it are particularly addressed. The obtained material parameters are the basic data to be considered in the simulations that are performed afterwards: the analysis of the tensile test mainly aimed at assessing the proposed characterization and, in addition, the modelling of the flattening process of a cylinder studied to discuss the performance of the constitutive model in the prediction of damage evolution.  相似文献
