It is now well known that Fick’s Law is frequently inadequate for describing moisture diffusion in polymers and polymer composites. Non-Fickian or anomalous diffusion is likely to occur when a polymer composite laminate is subjected to external stresses that could give rise to internal damage in the form of matrix cracks. As a result, it is necessary to take into account the combined effects of temperature, stress, and damage in the construction of such a model. In this article, a modeling methodology based on irreversible thermodynamics applied within the framework of composite macro-mechanics is presented, that would allow characterization of non-Fickian diffusion coefficients from moisture-weight-gain data for laminated composites. A symmetric damage tensor based on continuum damage mechanics is incorporated in this model by invoking the principle of invariance with respect to coordinate transformations. For tractability, the diffusion-governing equations are simplified for the special case of a laminate, with uniformly distributed matrix cracks, that is subjected to a uniaxial tensile stress. The final form for effective diffusivity obtained from this derivation indicates that the effective diffusivity for this case is a quadratic function of crack density. A finite element procedure that extends this methodology to more complex shapes and boundary conditions is also presented. Comparisons with test data for a 5-harness satin textile composite are provided for model verifications.  相似文献

A review of several important constitutive equations is herein conducted with an eye towards determining those most suitable for use in modelling polymer melt processing. General principles are invoked for a priori screening of the equations without needing detailed comparison of the model predictions with experimental data. These principles, which are derived from continuum mechanics, thermodynamics and molecular kinetic theory, and dela with convection and diffusion of entangled polymer strands during flow, are: (1) During sudden deformations, the stress is a unique function of the total strain. (2) The second law of thermodynamics holds for all deformations. (3) The constitutive equation can be derived from a plausible molecular model which describes the convection and diffusion. (4) The model parameters can be determined by a reasonable number of rheometric experiments. Based on these principles, it is concluded that separable free energy models are the most promising. These are either BKZ integral models with a kernel factorable into a time-dependent and a strain-dependent part. or sets of Maxwell-type differential equations that employ a generalized convected derivative, and that are linear in stress in the absence of flow.  相似文献

A theory of primary and secondary creep deformation in metals is presented, which is based upon the concept of tensor internal state variables and the principles of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics. The theory is able to account for both multi-axial and time-dependent stress and strain states. The wellknown concepts of elastic, anelastic and plastic strains follow naturally from the theory. Homogeneous stress states are considered in detail and a simplified theory is derived by linearizing with respect to the internal state variables. It is demonstrated that the model can be developed in such a way that multi-axial constant-stress creep data can be presented as a single relationship between an equivalent stress and an equivalent strain. It is shown how the theory may be used to describe the multi-axial deformation of metals which are subjected to constant stress states. The multi-axial strain response to a general cyclic stress state is calculated. For uni-axial stress states, square-wave loading and a thermal fatigue stress cycle are analysed.  相似文献

Gradient theories, as a regularized continuum mechanics approach, have found wide applications for modeling strain localization failure process. This paper presents a second gradient stress–strain damage elasticity theory based upon the method of virtual power. The theory considers the strain gradient and its conjugated double stresses. Instead of introducing an intrinsic material length scale into the constitutive law in an ad hoc fashion, a microstructural granular mechanics approach is applied to derive the higher-order constitutive coefficients such that the internal length scale parameter reflects the natural granularity of the underlying material microstructure. The derivations of the required damage constitutive relationships, the strong form governing equations as well as its weak form for the second gradient model are described. The recently popularized Element-Free Galerkin (EFG) method is then employed to discretize the weak form equilibrium equation for accommodating the resultant higher-order continuity requirements and further handling the mesh sensitivity problem. Numerical examples for shear band simulations show that the proposed second gradient continuum model can produce stable, accurate as well as mesh-size independent solutions without a priori assumption of the shear band path.  相似文献

A continuum thermodynamics formulation for micromagnetics coupled with mechanics is devised to model the evolution of magnetic domain and martensite twin structures in ferromagnetic shape memory alloys. The theory falls into the class of phase-field or diffuse-interface modeling approaches. In addition to the standard mechanical and magnetic balance laws, two sets of micro-forces and their associated balance laws are postulated; one set for the magnetization order parameter and one set for the martensite order parameter. Next, the second law of thermodynamics is analyzed to identify the appropriate material constitutive relationships. The proposed formulation does not constrain the magnitude of the magnetization to be constant, allowing for spontaneous magnetization changes associated with strain and temperature. The equations governing the evolution of the magnetization are shown to reduce to the commonly accepted Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations for the case where the magnetization magnitude is constant. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrates that under certain limiting conditions, the equations governing the evolution of the martensite-free strain are shown to be equivalent to a hyperelastic strain gradient theory. Finally, numerical solutions are presented to investigate the fundamental interactions between the magnetic domain wall and the martensite twin boundary in ferromagnetic shape memory alloys. These calculations determine under what conditions the magnetic domain wall and the martensite twin boundary can be dissociated, resulting in a limit to the actuating strength of the material.  相似文献

A general framework encompassing both the (conventional) deformational and configurational settings of continuum mechanics is presented. A systematic application of balance principles over a migrating control volume in the undeformed configuration of the continuum body yields the system of governing equations in the bulk, on the surface and on a coherent interface within the continuum. The equations governing the response of the bulk agree with those of the conventional deformational approach. The localised balance equations are expressed in the configurational setting using a pull-back operator and reformulated in terms of the Eshelby stress. The configurational expression of the dissipation elucidates the energy loss associated with configurational changes. The general framework is introduced by considering the problem of coupled deformation, heat conduction and species diffusion within a geometrically non-linear continuum body intersected by a coherent interface. The nature of the coupling is emphasised throughout the presentation and via an example.

A general constitutive theory of the stress-modulated growth of biomaterials is presented with a particular accent given to pseudo-elastic soft living tissues. The governing equations of the mechanics of solids with a growing mass are revisited within the framework of finite deformation continuum thermodynamics. The multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into its elastic and growth parts is employed to study the growth of isotropic, transversely isotropic, and orthotropic biomaterials. An explicit representation of the growth part of the deformation gradient is given in each case, which leads to an effective incremental formulation in the analysis of the stress-modulated growth process. The rectangular components of the instantaneous elastic moduli tensor are derived corresponding to selected forms of the elastic strain energy function. Physically appealing structures of the stress-dependent evolution equations for the growth induced stretch ratios are proposed.  相似文献

The article reports a methodology to synthesize the response of plane strain orthotropic and transversely isotropic half-spaces and full-spaces with arbitrarily oriented symmetry axes and subjected to concentrated and to distributed loads. Numerical results include the response of a half-space and a full-space to a uniform strip load. The examples presented analyze the influence of coordinate axis rotation and of the continuum anisotropy ratios. Stationary dynamic behavior is assumed throughout the article.  相似文献

Most devices based on shape memory alloys experience both finite deformations and non-proportional loading conditions in engineering applications. This motivates the development of constitutive models considering finite strain as well as martensite variant reorientation. To this end, in the present article, based on the principles of continuum thermodynamics with internal variables, a three-dimensional finite strain phenomenological constitutive model is proposed taking its basis from the recent model in the small strain regime proposed by Panico and Brinson (J Mech Phys Solids 55:2491–2511, 2007). In the finite strain constitutive model derivation, a multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into elastic and inelastic parts, together with an additive decomposition of the inelastic strain rate tensor into transformation and reorientation parts is adopted. Moreover, it is shown that, when linearized, the proposed model reduces exactly to the original small strain model.  相似文献

Second-grade elastic materials featured by a free energy depending on the strain and the strain gradient, and a kinetic energy depending on the velocity and the velocity gradient, are addressed. An inertial energy balance principle and a virtual work principle for inertial actions are envisioned to enrich the set of traditional theoretical tools of thermodynamics and continuum mechanics. The state variables include the body momentum and the surface momentum, related to the velocity in a nonstandard way, as well as the concomitant mass-accelerations and inertial forces, which do intervene into the motion equations and into the force boundary conditions. The boundary traction is the sum of two parts, i.e. the Cauchy traction and the Gurtin–Murdoch traction, whereas the traction boundary condition exhibits the typical format of the equilibrium equation of a material surface (as known from the principles of surface mechanics) whereby the Gurtin–Murdoch traction (incorporating the inertial surface force) plays the role of applied surfacial force density. The body’s boundary surface constitutes a thin boundary layer which is in global equilibrium under all the external forces applied on it, a feature that makes it possible to exploit the traction Cauchy theorem within second-grade materials. This means that a second-grade material is formed up by two sub-systems, that is, the bulk material operating as a classical Cauchy continuum, and the thin boundary layer operating as a Gurtin–Murdoch material surface. The classical linear and angular momentum theorems are suitably extended for higher order inertia, from which the local motion equations and the moment equilibrium equations (stress symmetry) can be derived. For an isotropic material featured by four constants, i.e. the Lamé constants and two length scale parameters (Aifantis model), the dynamic evolution problem is characterized by a Hamilton-type variational principle and a solution uniqueness theorem. Closed-form solutions of the wave dispersion analysis problem for beam models are presented and compared with known results from the literature. The paper indicates a correct thermodynamically consistent way to take into account higher order inertia effects within continuum mechanics.  相似文献

The equilibrium of coherent and incoherent mismatched interfaces is reformulated in the context of continuum mechanics based on the Gibbs dividing surface concept. Two surface stresses are introduced: a coherent surface stress and an incoherent surface stress, as well as a transverse excess strain. The coherent surface stress and the transverse excess strain represent the thermodynamic driving forces of stretching the interface while the incoherent surface stress represents the driving force of stretching one crystal while holding the other fixed and thereby altering the structure of the interface. These three quantities fully characterize the elastic behavior of coherent and incoherent interfaces as a function of the in-plane strain, the transverse stress and the mismatch strain. The isotropic case is developed in detail and particular attention is paid to the case of interfacial thermo-elasticity. This exercise provides an insight on the physical significance of the interfacial elastic constants introduced in the formulation and illustrates the obvious coupling between the interface structure and its associated thermodynamics quantities. Finally, an example based on atomistic simulations of Cu/Cu2O interfaces is given to demonstrate the relevance of the generalized interfacial formulation and to emphasize the dependence of the interfacial thermodynamic quantities on the incoherency strain with an actual material system.  相似文献

An accurate laminate model developed by using multilayer shear deformable plate modeling and interface elements, based on fracture mechanics and contact mechanics, is proposed to analyze mixed mode delamination in composite laminates. Perfect adhesion along the undelaminated portion of the delamination plane is simulated by treating interface stiffnesses as penalty parameters, whereas to enforce interface displacement continuity between plate elements constituting each sub-laminate above or below the delamination plane, the Lagrange multiplier method is used. The governing differential equations are derived through a variational procedure by using a modified total potential energy functional. Results are obtained by numerical integration of the non-linear three-point boundary value problem modeling mixed-mode delamination of the laminate plate subjected to end loading, which accounts also for the frictionless contact condition. The coupling of a penalty procedure with the Lagrange multiplier method, results in an accurate and direct energy release rate evaluation. Comparisons with results available from the literature obtained with a local continuum approach, show that mode partition may be performed to the desired accuracy by refining multilayer plate models for each sub-laminate. In addition, original analytical formulas for mode partition are obtained by coupling the interface approach and fracture mechanics concepts, evidencing the effectiveness of the proposed approach and gaining a better insight into the influence of shear effects on mode decomposition. Numerical computations for practical problems, evidence both the relative simplicity and the efficiency of the proposed model to represent mixed mode interlaminar fracturing as well as crack–face interaction.  相似文献

A theoretical framework is presented for the statics and kinematics of discrete Cosserat-type granular materials. In analogy to the force and moment equilibrium equations for particles, compatibility equations for closed loops are formulated in the two-dimensional case for relative displacements and relative rotations at contacts. By taking moments of the equilibrium equations, micromechanical expressions are obtained for the static quantities average Cauchy stress tensor and average couple stress tensor. In analogy, by taking moments of the compatibility equations, micromechanical expressions are obtained for the (infinitesimal) kinematic quantities average rotation gradient tensor and average Cosserat strain tensor in the two-dimensional case. Alternatively, these expressions for the average Cauchy stress tensor and the average couple stress tensor are obtained from considerations of the equivalence of the continuum force and couple traction vectors acting on a plane and the resultant of the discrete forces and couples acting on this plane. In analogy, the expressions for the average rotation gradient tensor and the average Cosserat strain tensor are obtained from considerations of the change of length and change of rotation of a line element in the two-dimensional case. It is shown that the average particle stress tensor is always symmetrical, contrary to the average stress tensor of an equivalent homogenized continuum. Finally, discrete analogues of the virtual work and complementary virtual work principles from continuum mechanics are derived.  相似文献

Given a general one-particle constitutive equation for the stress tensor, we discuss how to incorporate the additional effects of polymer diffusivity and migration into that constitutive equation within the framework of continuum mechanics. For the example of an upper-convected Maxwell model representing the polymer contribution to the stress tensor of a dilute polymer solution, we describe i) how to modify the constitutive equation for the stress tensor to include diffusion and migration effects, ii) how to formulate a balance equation for the polymer mass density in order to describe the nonhomogeneous composition of the polymer solution resulting from migration, and iii) how to close the extended set of coupled equations by means of further constitutive equations for the migration velocity and the diffusion tensor. In order to guarantee the material objectivity for all equations, we formulate them in the body tensor formulation of continuum mechanics (and then translate them into Cartesian space). The proposed equations are compared to results of a recent kinetic-theory approach.Dedicated to Professor Arthur S. Lodge on the occasion of his 70th birthday and his retirement from the University of Wisconsin.  相似文献

Of interest here is the stability of a rectangular block subjected to a uniform magnetic field perpendicular to its longitudinal axis. The two ends of the block are frictionless and kept parallel to each other. This boundary value problem is motivated by the classical problem of magnetoelastic buckling in which a cantilever beam subjected to a transverse magnetic field buckles when the applied field reaches a critical value. This work presents a finite strain continuum mechanics formulation of the stability problem of a homogeneous, compressible, magnetoelastic rectangular block in plane strain subjected to a uniform transverse magnetic field. The applied variational approach employs an unconstrained energy minimization recently proposed by the authors. The analytical solution for the critical buckling fields for both the antisymmetric and symmetric modes are obtained for three different constitutive laws. The corresponding result for thin beams is extracted asymptotically for a special material and the solution is compared to previously published results. The critical magnetic field is shown to increase monotonically with the block's aspect ratio for each material and mode type. Antisymmetric modes are always the critical buckling modes for stress saturated and neo-Hookean materials, except for a narrow range of moderate aspect ratios (about 0.25) where symmetric modes become critical. For strain-saturated solids no buckling is possible above a maximum aspect ratio.  相似文献

A Phenomenological Mesoscopic Field Dislocation Mechanics (PMFDM) model is developed, extending continuum plasticity theory for studying initial-boundary value problems of small-scale plasticity. PMFDM results from an elementary space-time averaging of the equations of Field Dislocation Mechanics (FDM), followed by a closure assumption from any strain-gradient plasticity model that attempts to account for effects of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) only in work hardening. The specific lower-order gradient plasticity model chosen to substantiate this work requires one additional material parameter compared to its conventional continuum plasticity counterpart. The further addition of dislocation mechanics requires no additional material parameters. The model (a) retains the constitutive dependence of the free-energy only on elastic strain as in conventional continuum plasticity with no explicit dependence on dislocation density, (b) does not require higher-order stresses, and (c) does not require a constitutive specification of a ‘back-stress’ in the expression for average dislocation velocity/plastic strain rate. However, long-range stress effects of average dislocation distributions are predicted by the model in a mechanistically rigorous sense. Plausible boundary conditions (with obvious implication for corresponding interface conditions) are discussed in some detail from a physical point of view. Energetic and dissipative aspects of the model are also discussed. The developed framework is a continuous-time model of averaged dislocation plasticity, without having to rely on the notion of incremental work functions, their convexity properties, or their minimization. The tangent modulus relating stress rate and total strain rate in the model is the positive-definite tensor of linear elasticity, and this is not an impediment to the development of idealized microstructure in the theory and computations, even when such a convexity property is preserved in a computational scheme. A model of finite deformation, mesoscopic single crystal plasticity is also presented, motivated by the above considerations.Lower-order gradient plasticity appears as a constitutive limit of PMFDM, and the development suggests a plausible boundary condition on the plastic strain rate for this limit that is appropriate for the modeling of constrained plastic flow in three-dimensional situations.  相似文献
