Electron impact (EI) mass spectra of a selection of C1-C3 haloalkanes in helium nanodroplets have been recorded to determine if the helium solvent can significantly reduce molecular ion fragmentation. Haloalkanes were chosen for investigation because their EI mass spectra in the gas phase show extensive ion fragmentation. There is no evidence of any major softening effect in large helium droplets ( approximately 60 000 helium atoms), but some branching ratios are altered. In particular, channels requiring C-C bond fission or concerted processes leading to the ejection of hydrogen halide molecules are suppressed by helium solvation. Rapid cooling by the helium is not sufficient to account for all the differences between the helium droplet and gas phase mass spectra. It is also suggested that the formation of a solid "snowball" of helium around the molecular ion introduces a cage effect, which enhances those fragmentation channels that require minimal disruption to the helium cage for products to escape.  相似文献

In an attempt to understand the phase behavior of aqueous hydrogen fluoride, the clustering in the mixture is investigated at the molecular level. The study is performed at the mPW1B95/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory. Several previous studies attempted to describe the dissociation of HF in water, but in this investigation, the focus is only on the association patterns that are present in this binary mixture. A total of 214 optimized geometries of (HF)n(H2O)m clusters, with m + n as high as 8, were investigated. For each cluster combination, several different conformations are investigated, and the preferred conformations are presented. Using multiple linear regressions, the average strengths of the four possible H-bonding interactions are obtained. The strongest H-bond interaction is reported to be the H2O...H-F interaction. The most probable distributions of mixed clusters as a function of composition are also deduced. It is found that the larger (HF)n(H2O)m clusters are favored both energetically and entropically compared to the ones that are of size m + n < or = 3. Also, the clusters with equimolar contributions of HF and H2O are found to have the strongest interactions.  相似文献

Reported here is a study of the effects of liquid helium cooling on the fragmentation of ions formed by electron impact mass ionization. The molecules of interest are picked up by the helium nanodroplets as they pass through a low pressure oven. Electron impact ionization of a helium atom in the droplet is followed by resonant charge transfer to neighboring helium atoms. When the charge is transferred to the target molecule, the difference in the ionization potentials between helium and the molecule results in the formation of a vibrationally hot ion. In isolation, the hot parent ion would undergo subsequent fragmentation. On the other hand, if the cooling due to the helium is fast enough, the parent ion will be actively cooled before fragmentation occurs. The target molecule used in the present study is triphenylmethanol (TPM), an important species in synthetic chemistry, used to sterically protect hydroxyl groups. Threshold PhotoElectron PhotoIon COincidence (TPEPICO) experiments are also reported for gas-phase TPM to help quantify the ion energetics resulting from the cooling effects of the helium droplets.  相似文献

The cross sections for electron scattering on OH-(H2O)n for n = 0-4 were measured from threshold to approximately 50 eV. All detachment cross sections were found to follow the classical prediction given earlier [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 892 (1995)] with a threshold energy for electron-impact detachment that increased upon sequential hydration, yielding values in the range from 4.5 eV +/- 0.2 eV for OH- to 12.10 eV +/- 0.5 eV for OH-(H2O)4. For n > or = 1, we found that approximately 80% of the total reaction events lead to electron detachment plus total dissociation of the clusters into the constituent molecules of OH and H2O. Finally, we observed resonances in the cross sections for OH-(H2O)3 and for OH-(H2O)4. The resonances were located at approximately 15 eV and were ascribed to the formation of dianions in excited states.  相似文献

By first principles calculations, we explore the possibility that Na(-)(H(2)O)(n) and Li(-)(H(2)O)(n) clusters, which have been measured previously by photoelectron experiments, could serve as gas-phase molecular models for the solvation of two electrons. Such models would capture the electron-electron interaction in a solution environment, which is missed in the well-known anionic water clusters (H(2)O)(n) (-). Our results show that by n = 10, the two loosely bound s electrons in Li(-)(H(2)O)(n) are indeed detached from lithium, and they could exist in either the singlet (spin-paring) or the triplet (spin-coupling) state. In contrast, the two electrons would prefer to stay on the sodium atom in Na(-)(H(2)O)(n) and on the surface of the cluster. The formation of a solvated electron pair and the variation in solvation structures make these two cluster series interesting subjects for further experimental investigation.  相似文献

Electron impact ionization of gas phase silver clusters Ag n ,n≦36 has been achieved in the threshold region. The vertical ionization potentials in this region clearly demonstrate the evidence of shell effects as well as a distinct even-odd oscillation up ton?20. Their general size dependence is somewhat different from that of the alkali metal clusters due to the presence of thed-electrons.  相似文献

Gaussian-3 and MP2/aug-cc-pVnZ methods have been used to calculate geometries and thermochemistry of CS(2)(H2O)n, where n=1-4. An extensive molecular dynamics search followed by optimization using these two methods located two dimers, six trimers, six tetramers, and two pentamers. The MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ structure matched best with the experimental result for the CS(2)(H2O) dimer, showing that diffuse functions are necessary to model the interactions found in this complex. For larger CS(2)(H2O)n clusters, the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ minima are significantly different from the MP2(full)6-31G* structures, revealing that the G3 model chemistry is not suitable for investigation of sulfur containing van der Waals complexes. Based on the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ free energies, the concentration of saturated water in the atmosphere and the average amount of CS(2) in the atmosphere, the concentrations of these clusters are predicted to be on the order of 10(5) CS(2)(H2O) clusters.cm(-3) and 10(2) CS(2)(H2O)(2) clusters.cm(-3) at 298.15 K. The MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ scaled harmonic and anharmonic frequencies of the most abundant dimer cluster at 298 K are presented, along with the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ scaled harmonic frequencies for the CS(2)(H(2)O)(n) structures predicted to be present in a low-temperature molecular beam experiment.  相似文献

We carry out a systematic search for the atomic structures of silicon cluster cations and anions in the size range n=31-50 using density functional theory in the generalized-gradient approximation. The obtained lowest-energy candidates feature cagelike structures. We find that the computed binding energies and the dissociation pathways as well as the mobilities of our lowest-energy isomers of the cations are all in good agreement with the measured data from experiments. Furthermore, based on these isomers, we reveal that the steplike feature appearing in the measured high-resolution mobilities can be correlated with the corresponding fullerenes explicitly, which strongly support the notion that endohedral silicon fullerenelike structures are the most favored growth pattern for silicon clusters in the range n=31-50. Our calculation and analysis suggest that the proposed isomers are probably very close to the major-abundance isomers observed in experiments.  相似文献

Hydroperoxide anion (HOO(-)), the conjugate base of hydrogen peroxide (HOOH), has been relatively little studied despite the importance of HOOH in commercial processes, atmospheric science, and biology. The anion has been shown to exist as a stable species in alkaline water. This project explored the structure of gas phase (HOO(-))(H(2)O)(n) clusters and identified the lowest energy configurations for n ≤ 8 at the B3LYP/6-311++G** level of theory and for n ≤ 6 at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. As a start toward understanding equilibration between HOO(-) and HOOH in an alkaline environment, (HOOH)(OH(-))(H(2)O)(n-1) clusters were likewise examined, and the lowest energy configurations were determined for n ≤ 8 (B3LYP/6-311++G**) and n ≤ 6 (MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ). Some studies were also done for n = 20. The two species have very different solvation behaviors. In low energy (HOOH)(OH(-))(H(2)O)(n-1) clusters, HOOH sits on the surface of the cluster, is 4-coordinated (each O is donor once and acceptor once), and donates to the hydroxide ion. In contrast, in low energy (HOO(-))(H(2)O)(n) clusters, (HOO(-)) takes a position in the cluster center surrounded on all sides by water molecules, and its optimum coordination number appears to be 7 (one O is donor-acceptor-acceptor while the other is a 4-fold acceptor). For n ≤ 6 the lowest (HOOH)(OH(-))(H(2)O)(n-1) cluster lies 1.0-2.1 kcal/mol below the lowest (HOO(-))(H(2)O)(n) cluster, but the lowest clusters found for n = 20 favor (HOO(-))(H(2)O)(20). The results suggest that ambient water could act as a substantial kinetic brake that slows equilibration between (HOOH)(OH(-)) and (HOO(-))(H(2)O) because extensive rearrangement of solvation shells is necessary to restabilize either species after proton transfer.  相似文献

High-level quantum-chemical ab initio coupled-cluster and multiconfigurational perturbation methods have been used to compute the vertical and adiabatic ionization potentials of several water clusters: dimer, trimer, tetramer, pentamer, hexamer book, hexamer ring, hexamer cage, and hexamer prism. The present results establish reference values at a level not reported before for these systems, calibrating different computational strategies and helping to discard less reliable theoretical and experimental data. The systematic study with the increasing size of the water cluster allows obtaining some clues on the structure and reductive properties of liquid water.  相似文献

The hydrated nucleoside anions, uridine(-)(H(2)O)(n=0-2), cytidine(-)(H(2)O)(n=0-2), and thymidine(-)(H(2)O)(n=0,1), have been prepared in beams and studied by anion photoelectron spectroscopy in order to investigate the effects of a microhydrated environment on parent nucleoside anions. Vertical detachment energies (VDEs) were measured for all eight anions, and from these, estimates were made for five sequential anion hydration energies. Excellent agreement was found between our measured VDE value for thymidine(-)(H(2)O)(1) and its calculated value in the companion article by S. Kim and H. F. Schaefer III.  相似文献

Clusters of tetracene molecules with different numbers of attached (Ar)(N), (Ne)(N) and (H(2))(N) particles (N = 1-2000) are assembled inside superfluid He nanodroplets and studied via laser-induced fluorescence. The frequency shift of the fluorescence spectrum of the tetracene molecules is studied as a function of cluster size and pickup order of tetracene and cluster species. For (Ar)(N) and (Ne)(N) clusters, our results indicate that the tetracene molecules reside inside the clusters when tetracene is captured by the He nanodroplet before the cluster species; conversely, the tetracene molecules stay on the surface of the clusters when tetracene is captured after the cluster species. In the case of (H(2))(N) clusters, however, tetracene molecules reside inside the (H(2))(N) clusters irrespective of the pickup order. We conclude that (Ar)(N) and (Ne)(N) clusters are rigid at T = 0.38 K, while (H(2))(N) clusters of up to N = 2000 remain fluxional at the same temperature. The results may also indicate the occurrence of heterogeneous nucleation of the (H(2))(N) clusters, which is induced by the interaction with tetracene chromophore molecules.  相似文献

Electron binding motifs of (H2O)n- clusters   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It is has been established that the excess electrons in small (i.e., n < or = 7) (H2O)n- clusters are bound in the dipole field of the neutral cluster and, thus, exist as surface states. However, the motifs for the binding of an excess electron to larger water clusters remain the subject of considerable debate. The prevailing view is that electrostatic interactions with the "free" OH bonds of the cluster dominate the binding of the excess electron in both small and large clusters. In the present study, a quantum Drude model is used to study selected (H2O)n- clusters in the n = 12-24 size range with the goal of elucidating different possible binding motifs. In addition to the known surface and cavity states, we identify a new binding motif, where the excess electron permeates the hydrogen-bonding network. It is found that electrostatic interactions dominate the binding of the excess electron only for isomers with large dipole moments, whereas in isomers without large dipole moments polarization and correlation effects dominate. Remarkably, for the network-permeating states, the excess electron binds even in the absence of electrostatic interactions.  相似文献

The ground-state structures of neutral, cationic, and anionic phosphorus clusters P(n), P(n)(+), and P(n)(-) (n = 3-15) have been calculated using the B3LYP/6-311+G* density functional method. The P(n)(+) and P(n)(-) (n = 3-15) clusters with odd n were found to be more stable than those with even n, and we provide a satisfactory explanation for such trends based on concepts of energy difference, ionization potential, electron affinity, and incremental binding energy. The result of odd/even alternations is in good accord with the relative intensities of cationic and anionic phosphorus clusters observed in mass spectrometric studies.  相似文献

The interaction of superoxide ion O2? with up to four water molecules [O2?: (H2O)n, n = 1, 2, 4] has been investigated using ab initio molecular orbital theory. The binding energy of O2?: H2O is calculated to be ?20.6 kcal/mol in good agreement with gas phase experimental data. At the MP3/6-31G* level the O2?:H2O complex has a C2v structure with a double (cyclic) hydrogen bond between O2? and H2O. A Cs structure with a single hydrogen bond is only 0.7 kcal/mol less stable. Interaction of H2O with the doubly occupied π* orbital of O2? is preferred slightly over interaction with the singly occupied π* orbital. Natural bond orbital analysis suggests that both electrostatic and charge transfer interactions are important in anionic complexes. The charge transfer occurs predominantly in the O2? → H2O direction and is important in determining the relative stabilities of the different structures and states. Singly and doubly hydrogen-bonded structures for the O2?: (H2O)2 and O2?: (H2O)4 clusters were found to be similar in stability and the increase in binding of the cluster becomes smaller as each additional water molecule is added to the cluster.  相似文献

Clusters consisting of normal H2 molecules, produced in a free jet expansion, are size selected by diffraction from a transmission nanograting prior to electron impact ionization. For each neutral cluster (H2)(N) (N=2-40), the relative intensities of the ion fragments Hn+ are measured with a mass spectrometer. H3+ is found to be the most abundant fragment up to N=17. With a further increase in N, the abundances of H3+, H5+, H7+, and H9+ first increase and, after passing through a maximum, approach each other. At N=40, they are about the same and more than a factor of 2 and 3 larger than for H11+ and H13+, respectively. For a given neutral cluster size, the intensities of the ion fragments follow a Poisson distribution. The fragmentation probabilities are used to determine the neutral cluster size distribution produced in the expansion at a source temperature of 30.1 K and a source pressure of 1.50 bar. The distribution shows no clear evidence of a magic number N=13 as predicted by theory and found in experiments with pure para-H2 clusters. The ion fragment distributions are also used to extract information on the internal energy distribution of the H3+ ions produced in the reaction H2+ + H2-->H3+ +H, which is initiated upon ionization of the cluster. The internal energy is assumed to be rapidly equilibrated and to determine the number of molecules subsequently evaporated. The internal energy distribution found in this way is in good agreement with data obtained in an earlier independent merged beam scattering experiment.  相似文献

We report a theoretical study of the nonadiabatic fragmentation dynamics of ionized neon clusters embedded in helium nanodroplets for cluster sizes up to n=14 atoms. The dynamics of the neon atoms is modeled using the molecular dynamics with quantum transitions method of Tully [J. Chem. Phys. 93, 1061 (1990)] with the nuclei treated classically and transitions between electronic states quantum mechanically. The potential-energy surfaces are derived from a diatomics-in-molecules model to which induced dipole-induced dipole interactions are added. The effect of the spin-orbit interaction is also discussed. The helium environment is modeled by a friction force acting on charged atoms whose speed exceeds the critical Landau velocity. The dependence of the fragment size distribution on the friction strength and on the initial nanodroplet size is investigated. By comparing with the available experimental data obtained for Ne3+ and Ne4+, a reasonable value for the friction coefficient, the only parameter of the model, is deduced. This value is then used to predict the effect of the helium environment on the dissociation dynamics of larger neon clusters, n=5-14. The results show stabilization of larger fragments than in the gas phase, but fragmentation is not completely caged. In addition, two types of dynamics are characterized for Ne4+: fast and explosive, therefore leaving no time for friction to cool down the process when dynamics starts on one of the highest electronic states, and slower, therefore leading to some stabilization by helium when it starts on one of the lowest electronic states.  相似文献

Helium nanodroplet isolation and a tunable quantum cascade laser are used to probe the fundamental CO stretch bands of aluminum carbonyl complexes, Al-(CO)(n) (n ≤ 5). The droplets are doped with single aluminum atoms via the resistive heating of an aluminum wetted tantalum wire. The downstream sequential pick-up of CO molecules leads to the rapid formation and cooling of Al-(CO)(n) clusters within the droplets. Near 1900 cm(-1), rotational fine structure is resolved in bands that are assigned to the CO stretch of a linear (2)Π(1/2) Al-CO species and the asymmetric and symmetric CO stretch vibrations of a planar C(2v) Al-(CO)(2) complex in a (2)B(1) electronic state. Bands corresponding to clusters with n ≥ 3 lack resolved rotational fine structure; nevertheless, the small frequency shifts from the n = 2 bands indicate that these clusters consist of an Al-(CO)(2) core with additional CO molecules attached via van der Waals interactions. A second n = 2 band is observed near the CO stretch of Al-CO, indicating a local minimum on the n = 2 potential consisting of an "unreacted" (Al-CO)-CO cluster. The line width of this band is ~0.3 cm(-1), which is about 30 times broader than the transitions within the Al-CO band. The additional broadening is consistent with a homogeneous mechanism corresponding to a rapid vibrational excitation induced reaction within the (Al-CO)-CO cluster to form the covalently bonded Al-(CO)(2) complex. Ab initio CCSD(T) calculations and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses are carried out to investigate the nature of the bonding in the n = 1, 2 complexes. The NBO calculations show that both π-donation (from the occupied aluminum p orbital into a π* antibonding CO orbital) and σ-donation (from CO into the empty aluminum p orbitals) play a significant role in the bonding, analogous to transition-metal carbonyl complexes. The large red shift observed for the CO stretch vibrations is consistent with this bonding analysis.  相似文献

The hydrogen-bonded (N2H4) n clusters and the van der Waals (OCS) n clusters are size selected in a scattering experiment with a He beam up to the cluster sizen=6. By measuring the angular distributions of the scattered clusters the complete fragmentation pattern of electron impact ionization is obtained. For Hydrazine the two main fragment masses are the protonated species (N2H4) n?1H+ and with somewhat weaker intensities also the nominal ion mass (N2H4) n + . The largest intensity is observed for the monomer ion N2H 4 + to which clusters up ton=5 fragment. For carbonylsulfide, completely different results are obtained. Aside from the fragments of the OCS monomer and the van der Waals cluster fragments (OCS) 2 + and (OCS) 3 + signals at mass S 2 + , S 3 + and S2OCS+ are detected. This indicates a fast chemical reaction in the cluster according to: S + OCS → CO + S2 which occurs for clusters of sizen ≥ 2. Peaks at S 3 + and S2OCS+ are seen for the first time forn ≥ 5 according to a further reaction of S2 in the cluster.  相似文献
