Pectin substances have been isolated from the epigeal pan of love-lies-bleeding,Amaranthus cruentus (A. caudatus), and have been characterized. The presence in them of galacturonic acid, galactose, rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, fructose, and glucose residues has been established. Summary The dissociation constants of the sulphonazo III-proton complexes, and the composition and global stability constant of the sulphonazo III-barium(II) complex were determined. The optimum conditions for the spectrophotometric determination of barium(II) and sulphate ions by means of sulphonazo III were worked out. The determination of barium is the most sensitive and selective of all known spectrophotometric barium determinations.
Zusammenfassung Die Dissoziationskonstanten der Sulphonazo III-Proton-Komplexe, sowie die Zusammensetzung und globale Stabilitätskonstante des Sulphonazo III-Barium(II)-Komplexes wurden festgestellt. Die optimalen Bedingungen für die spektralphotometrische Barium- und Sulfatbestimmung mit Hilfe von Sulfonazo III wurden ausgearbeitet. Die beschriebene Bestimmung von Barium stellt die empfindlichste und selektivste aller bekannten spektralphotometrischen Bariumbestimmungen dar.

Summary The carbohydrate complex of the Chara algaChara aculeolata Kütz includes an acid polysaccharide similar to the pectin substances of higher plants. It is based on a fragment constructed of -14 bound residues of D-galacturonic acid in the pyranose form. The pectin is characterized by a high homogeneity, a considerable content of D-galacturonic acid, and a low degree of acidification of the carboxy groups.M. V. The pectin substances have been isolated fromEremurus regelii Vved., their qualitative and quantitative monosaccharide compositions have been determined, and their physicochemical properties have been studied. The partial hydrolysis of the pectin gave a galacturonan.
