The present situation of Japanese certified reference materials registered in the COMAR database
In the field of reference materials, COMAR (Code d'Indexation des Matériaux de Référence) is now internationally known as
a reliable directory. In order to improve the quality of COMAR, a document which covers general requirements for the registration
of reference material has recently been adopted by the Japanese coding centre, NITE. This paper describes the general requirements
for reference materials and the current status of the COMAR database coded by the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation
(NITE), Japan. The concept of the requirements is fundamentally based on the ISO Guides 30, 31, 33, 34 and 35. Certifications
of reference materials are divided into the following three categories in the newly adopted document.
1. Certifications based on the results of interlaboratory comparisons
2. Certifications in accordance with the Measurement Law
3. Certifications in accordance with the measurement results of national institutions
An example of an uncertainty evaluation is also presented in the paper.

This paper describes the COMAR database for certified reference materials (CRMs). The Web-based version of COMAR is freely
accessible via the Internet. COMAR was established to assist laboratories in finding the CRMs needed. The database is maintained
in a collaboration of the world’s major CRM producers. The planned changes in the database as agreed at the last COMAR council
meeting in Prague in May 2006 are indicated.

Availability of reference materials: COMAR the database for certified reference materials
COMAR is the international database for certified reference materials. A new user-friendly web-based version, COMAR2, has been developed by BAM and CONET Consulting AG which will be available in December 2002. The advantages of COMAR2 are briefly explained.Presented at the International ILAC/IAF Conference on Accreditation in Global Trade, 23-25 September 2002, Berlin, Germany

Summary To provide scientists with information about existing CRMs the computerised index COde of Reference MAterials (COMAR) was established. This international database is described with respect to its contents and availability. Additionally the addresses of the COMAR National Coding Centers are given.

Summary The use of rapeseed cake is limited by the presence of a number of antinutritional factors the most important of which are glucosinolates. Introduction by EEC of a premium to produce rapeseed with low glucosinolate content has brought the need for reference material and accurate official methods of analysis. This paper summarises the work, begun at the end of 1987, to prepare three batches rapeseed materials (cleaning, mixing and packaging) for an intercomparison of methods. Details are presented of homogeneity and stability studies and the results of the intercomparison are discussed. One of the batches was prepared in sufficient quantity to serve as a reference material and the reference value for the total glucosinolate content of this sample was obtained from the results of the intercomparison.

Summary Reference materials to meet multipurpose needs for analysis of both inorganic and organic constituents in biological investigations are not readily available. A human total diet material is being investigated as a reference material for a wide variety of constituents of interest to human nutrition and health. This material shows a stable assay value for the natural levels of a number of vitamins following freeze-drying or radiation sterilization. This is an important feature in producing materials for long term stability as a Reference Material for natural levels of these constituents. An exception is an increase of 34% in assay value of folic acid upon freeze-drying and an 85% increase upon freezedrying followed by radiation sterilization.

Summary An investigation through interlaboratory comparison using different analytical techniques has been carried out in order to assess the suitability of a plasma protein solution as a source for a trace element reference material in clinical analysis. Reasonable agreement was obtained for a number of elements from the range studied: Al, Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Se, Sr, V and Zn. The techniques used included flame and furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS and ETA-AAS), furnace atomic emission spectrometry (ETA-AES), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and simultaneous multi-element atomic absorption spectrometry (SIMAAC). Results indicated that this plasma protein solution may prove useful as a source for a reference material covering trace element levels outwith the range found in normal human plasma.

Summary The procedure of manufacturing and certification of new reference materials intended to be used in organic elemental analysis is presented. The experience gained in the development of several materials has been used to design this procedure. A discussion of the requirements to be posed to a reference material in this field underlies the procedure. The results for five materials and the various methods used to obtain these results are given.
