This study investigates the effects of pulse energy distributions on subwavelength ripple structures (the ablation shapes and subwavelength ripples) using the plasma model with the consideration of laser particle–wave duality. In the case studies, the laser pulse (800 nm, 50 fs) trains consist of double pulses within a train with the energy ratios of 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1. Localized transient electron densities, material optical properties, and surface plasmon generation are strongly affected by the energy distributions. Hence, the adjustment of the ablation shape and subwavelength ripples can be achieved based on localized transient electron dynamics control during femtosecond laser pulse train processing of dielectrics. The simulation results show that better, more uniform structures, in terms of ablation shapes and subwavelength ripples, can be easily formed at a lower fluence or subpulse energy ratio of 1:1 with a fixed fluence. It is also found that pulse trains at a 1:1 energy ratio are preferred for drilling high-aspect-ratio microholes or microchannels.

Formation of periodic subwavelength ripples on a metallic tungsten surface is investigated through a line-scribing method under the irradiation of 800?nm, 50 fs to 8 ps ultra-short laser pulses. The distinctive features of the induced ripple structures are described in detail with different laser parameters. Experimental measurements reveal that with gradual decrease of the laser fluence, the pulse duration or the scanning speed, the ripple period is inclined to reduce but the ripple depth tends to become pronounced. Theoretical analyses suggest that the transient dielectric function change of the tungsten surface mainly originates from the nonequilibrium distribution of electrons due to the d-band transitions. A sandwich-like physical model of air?Cplasma?Ctarget is proposed and the excitation of a surface plasmon polaritonic (SPP) wave is supposed to occur on the interface between the metallic target and the electron plasma layer. Formation of ripples can be eventually attributed to the laser?CSPP interference. Theoretical interpretations are consistent with the experimental observations.

In this paper we report a simple method to fabricate a novel subwavelength structure surface on fused silica substrate using one-step reactive ion etching with two-dimensional polystyrene colloidal crystals as masks. The etching process and the morphologies of the obtained structure are controlled. We show that the period of the obtained fused silica pillar-like arrays were determined by the initial polystyrene nanoparticle size. The height of pillar arrays can be adjusted by controlling the etching duration, which is proved to be of importance in tailoring the antireflection properties of subwavelength structures surface. The novel subwavelength structures surface exhibit excellent broadband antireflection properties, but the size of the pillar affects the antireflective properties in short wavelength region. We anticipate this method would offer a convenient and scalable way for inexpensive and high-efficiency high power laser field designs.

Microstructures of micrometer sizes are produced on the surface of polyethylene terephthalate using nanosecond Nd:YAG-laser irradiation at 266 nm wavelength. The stable and well-defined structures were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. A theoretical model is suggested for the nonlinear behavior of etch depth versus incident laser fluence. In this model, two-photon stepwise absorption of chromophores is the dominant mechanism. Received: 3 August 2000 / Accepted: 9 January 2001 / Published online: 25 July 2001  相似文献

Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) were formed on Si and SiC surfaces by irradiations with femtosecond laser pulses in air. Different kinds of self-organized structures appeared on Si and SiC at laser fluences slightly higher than the damage threshold, which was measured by confocal laser scanning microscope. The characteristic spatial periodicity of every observed structure was estimated reading the peak values of the 2D Fourier transform power spectra obtained from SEM images. The evolution of the spatial periodicity was finally studied with respect to both the laser fluence and the number of laser pulses. As already observed for metals, the behavior of the spatial periodicity on laser fluence can be related to the parametric decay of laser light into surface plasma waves. Our results suggest a wide applicability of the parametric decay model on different materials, making the model a useful tool in view of different applications of LIPSS.

Periodic surface nanostructures are observed on Ti3+:Al2O3 single crystals that have been irradiated by a single focused beam from a femtosecond pulsed laser (wavelength: 800 nm; pulse duration: 130 and 152 fs). Atomic force microscopy images of single-ablated zones and modified structures created by fixing and translating samples through the focal region of a linearly polarized laser beam reveal self-organized periodic surface nanostructures (ripples) with a subwavelength spacing, which are oriented perpendicular to the electric-field vector of the laser beam. The period of the subwavelength ripples obtained by linearly polarized laser irradiation varies from ∼λ/5 to 2λ/5 (λ: incident laser wavelength) depending on the laser pulse energy. This phenomenon can be explained by assuming that the incident light field interferes with the electric field of electron plasma waves propagating inside the material; this interference periodically modulates the electron plasma density and modifies the surface ablation. In addition, for the first time, we observe screw-shaped nanostructures in the focal spot of circularly polarized beam irradiation. The morphology of these nanostructures appears to reflect the circular polarization of the laser light.

TiO2 film of around 850 nm in thickness was deposited on a soda-lime glass by PVD sputtering and irradiated using one pulse of krypton-fluorine (KrF) excimer laser (wavelength of 248 nm and pulse duration of 25 ns) with varying fluence. The color of the irradiated area became darker with increasing laser fluence. Irradiated surfaces were characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Surface undergoes thermal annealing at low laser fluence of 400 and 590 mJ/cm2. Microcracks at medium laser fluence of 1000 mJ/cm2 are attributed to surface melting and solidification. Hydrodynamic ablation is proposed to explain the formation of micropores and networks at higher laser fluence of 1100 and 1200 mJ/cm2. The darkening effect is explained in terms of trapping of light in the surface defects formed rather than anatase to rutile phase transformation as reported by others. Controlled darkening of TiO2 film might be used for adjustable filters.

Laser material processing of dielectrics with temporally asymmetric femtosecond laser pulses of identical fluence, spectrum, and statistical pulse duration is investigated experimentally. To that end single shot structures at the surface of fused silica as a function of fluence and pulse shape are analyzed with the help of scanning electron microscopy. Structures for the bandwidth limited pulses show the known expansion in structure size with increasing laser fluence approaching the diffraction limit, which is 1.4 μm for the 0.5NA microscope objective used. In contrast, structures from the asymmetric pulses are remarkably stable with respect to variations in laser fluence and stay below 300 nm despite doubling the fluence. Different thresholds for surface material modification with respect to an asymmetric pulse and its time reversed counterpart are attributed to control of different ionization processes.

Surface texturing of the metals, including steels, gained a new dimension with the appearance of femtosecond lasers. These laser systems enable highly precise modifications, which are very important for numerous applications of metals. The effects of a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser with the pulse duration of 160 fs, operating at 775 nm wavelength and in two operational regimes - single pulse (SP) and scanning regime, on a high quality AISI 1045 carbon steel were studied. The estimated surface damage threshold was 0.22 J/cm2 (SP). Surface modification was studied for the laser fluences of 0.66, 1.48 and 2.37 J/cm2. The fluence of 0.66 J/cm2, in both working regimes, induced texturing of the material, i.e. formation of periodic surface structures (PSS). Their periodicity was in accordance with the used laser wavelength. Finally, changes in the surface oxygen content caused by ultrashort laser pulses were recorded.

CaxCo4Sb12 skutterudite thin films have been prepared by pulsed laser deposition using a Nd:YAG laser working at 532 or 266 nm of wavelength. Characterization has been carried out by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Emphasis has been put on the difficulty to obtain the skutterudite phase. Influence of the deposition temperature, the way of sticking the substrate, the laser fluence, the base pressure prior to deposition and the laser wavelength has been studied. All parameters revealed to have a drastic effect, and the skutterudite could only be achieved in a very narrow range of temperature and laser fluence, for a given wavelength, showing the importance on how these parameters are measured to ensure reproducible results.

We report observation of nanostructures formed on thin TiN and DLC films that were irradiated by 800- and 267-nm, femtosecond (fs) Ti:sapphire laser pulses at an energy fluence slightly above the ablation threshold. On the ablated thin-film surfaces, the linearly polarized fs pulses produce arrays of fine periodic structures that are almost oriented to the direction perpendicular to the laser polarization, while the circularly polarized light forms fine-dot structures. The size of these surface structures is 1/10–1/5 of the laser wavelength and decreases with a decrease in the laser wavelength. We theoretically investigated different thermal relaxation participating in the ultrafast thermionic emission processes on gold film surface with a femtosecond pulse excitation. The thermionic emission regimes under the two temperature relaxation and the thermal diffusion relaxation were demonstrated. The simulations showed that the thermionic emission properties can be defined in the regime under two temperature relaxation by reducing the laser fluence, or widening the pulse duration or increasing the laser wavelength. It was also found that there exists a transition between the two distinct thermionic emission regimes under peculiar laser parameters of laser fluence, pulse duration and laser wavelength. The results were explained as significant intervene of laser irradiation parameters into gold film thermal relaxation processes.

The effect of fluence and pulse duration on the growth of nanostructures on chromium (Cr) surfaces has been investigated upon irradiation of femtosecond (fs) laser pulses in a liquid confined environment of ethanol. In order to explore the effect of fluence, targets were exposed to 1000 pulses at various peak fluences ranging from 4.7 to 11.8?J?cm–2 for pulse duration of ~25?fs. In order to explore the effect of pulse duration, targets were exposed to fs laser pulses of various pulse durations ranging from 25 to 100?fs, for a constant fluence of 11.8?J?cm–2. Surface morphology and structural transformations have been analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. After laser irradiation, disordered sputtered surface with intense melting and cracking is obtained at the central ablated areas, which are augmented with increasing laser fluence due to enhanced thermal effects. At the peripheral ablated areas, where local fluence is approximately in the range of 1.4–4?mJ?cm–2, very well-defined laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) with periodicity ranging from 270 to 370?nm along with dot-like structures are formed. As far as the pulse duration is concerned, a significant effect on the surface modification of Cr has been revealed. In the central ablated areas, for the shortest pulse duration (25?fs), only melting has been observed. However, LIPSS with dot-like structures and droplets have been grown for longer pulse durations. The periodicity of LIPSS increases and density of dot-like structures decreases with increasing pulse duration. The chemical and structural modifications of irradiated Cr have been revealed by Raman spectroscopy. It confirms the formation of new bands of chromium oxides and enol complexes or Cr-carbonyl compounds. The peak intensities of identified bands are dependent upon laser fluence and pulse duration.

The excimer laser nitriding process reported is developed to enhance the mechanical and chemical properties of aluminum alloys. An excimer laser beam is focused onto the alloy surface in a cell containing 1-bar nitrogen gas. A vapor plasma expands from the surface and a shock wave dissociates and ionizes nitrogen. It is assumed that nitrogen from plasma in contact with the surface penetrates to some depth. Thus it is necessary to work with a sufficient laser fluence to create the plasma, but this fluence must be limited to prevent laser-induced surface roughness. The nitrogen-concentration profiles are determined from Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Crystalline quality is evidenced by an X-ray diffraction technique. Transmission electron microscopy gives the in-depth microstructure. Fretting coefficient measurements exhibit a lowering for some experimental conditions. The polycrystalline nitride layer obtained is several micrometers thick and composed of a pure AlN (columnar microstructure) top layer (200–500 nm thick) standing on an AlN (grains) in alloy diffusion layer. From the heat conduction equation calculation it is shown that a 308-nm laser wavelength would be better to increase the nitride thickness, as it corresponds to a weaker reflectance R value for aluminum. Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS, ripples) were generated on stainless steel (100Cr6) and titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) surfaces upon irradiation with multiple femtosecond laser pulses (pulse duration 30 fs, central wavelength 790 nm). The experimental conditions (laser fluence, spatial spot overlap) were optimized in a sample-scanning geometry for the processing of large surface areas (5 × 5 mm2) covered homogeneously by the nanostructures. The irradiated surface regions were subjected to white light interference microscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealing spatial periods around 600 nm. The tribological performance of the nanostructured surface was characterized by reciprocal sliding against a ball of hardened steel in paraffin oil and in commercial engine oil as lubricants, followed by subsequent inspection of the wear tracks. For specific conditions, on the titanium alloy a significant reduction of the friction coefficient by a factor of more than two was observed on the laser-irradiated (LIPSS-covered) surface when compared to the non-irradiated one, indicating the potential benefit of laser surface structuring for tribological applications.

This work reports on the structural changes that take place in wafer grade silicon when it is micro-machined with ultra-short laser pulses of 150 fs duration. A Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) Ti:Sapphire laser was used, with an operating wavelength centered on 775 nm and a maximum repetition rate of 1 KHz. The laser induced damage was characterized over the fluence range 0.43–14 Jcm-2, and for each fluence a progressively increasing number of pulses was used. The analytical tools used to characterize the samples were all based upon electron microscopy. A 30 KeV scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) imaging technique was developed to observe defects in the crystal lattice and the thermal-mechanical damage in the area surrounding the laser machined region. Mechanical cross sectioning (in conjunction with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) surface imaging) was also used to reveal the internal structure, composition, and dimensions of the laser machined structures. Based on this analysis, it will be shown that laser machining of silicon with femtosecond pulses can produce features with minimal thermal damage, although lattice damage created by mechanical stresses and the deposition of ablated material both limit the extent to which this can be achieved, particularly with high aspect ratios. A key feature of the work presented here is the high-resolution STEM images of the laser-machined structures. PACS  42.65.Re; 42.62.Cf; 61.80.Ba; 61.82.Fk; 68.37.Hk; 68.37.Lp  相似文献

The structure of thin films deposited by pulsed laser ablation (PLD) is strongly dependent on experimental conditions, like laser wavelength and fluence, substrate temperature and pressure. Depending on these parameters we obtained various kinds of carbon materials varying from dense, mainly tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), to less compact vertically oriented graphene nano-particles. Thin carbon films were grown by PLD on n-Si 〈100〉 substrates, at temperatures ranging from RT to 800°C, from a rotating graphite target operating in vacuum. The laser ablation of the graphite target was performed by a UV pulsed ArF excimer laser (λ=193 nm) and a pulsed Nd:YAG laser, operating in the near IR (λ=1064 nm). The film structure and texturing, characterised by X-ray diffraction analysis, performed at grazing incidence (GI-XRD), and the film density, evaluated by X-ray reflectivity measurements, are strongly affected both by laser wavelength and fluence and by substrate temperature. Micro-Raman and GI-XRD analysis established the progressive formation of aromatic clusters and cluster condensation into vertically oriented nano-sized graphene structures as a direct function of increasing laser wavelength and deposition temperature. The film density, negatively affected by substrate temperature and laser wavelength and fluence, in turn, results in a porous bulk configuration and a high macroscopic surface roughness as shown by SEM characterisation. These structural property modifications induce a relevant variation also on the emission properties of carbon nano-structures, as evidenced by field emission measurements. This work is dedicated to our friend Giorgio who passed away 20th August.
