In view ofHammond's warning6 about the Conspiracy of errors, found in the case of low values of equilibrium constants of charge-transfer complexes a case is made out for redetermining the values for the system hexamethylbenzene—2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone. Uncertainties in the parameters were estimated using theLiptay 8 matrix procedure. The solvent used was dichloromethane. The following data were obtained at 25°C: vC T = 22,220 cm–1;E A=0.99 eV;K =2599±57 l2·cm–1·mol–2. max= 1020 ± 148 cm–1··1;K=2.55±0.37 l·mol–1; –H=2.7±0.3 kcal·mol–1.With 1 Figure

The crystal structure of (Me4N)3[WO(CN)4(NCS)]·NaNCS was determined from three-dimensional x-ray diffraction data. The dark blue crystals are monoclinic, space group C2/m, with cell dimensions a=13.105(4), b=12.688(2), c=18.871(3) Å, =100.4(8)°, z=4 and D=1.46 g cm–3. Anisotropic refinement of 1333 observed reflections converged to R=0.068. The [WO(CN)4(NCS)]3– ion is a distorted octahedron with the tungsten atom displaced by 0.35 Å out of the plane formed by the four cyano ligands, towards the oxo ligand. The coordinated thiocyanate ligand is bonded to the tungsten atomvia the nitrogen atomtrans to the oxo ligand. Bond distances found: W–CNav=2.14(3), W–O=1.61(2) and W–NCS=2.23(2) Å. The compound crystallizes as an adduct with an additional thiocyanate anion, ionically bonded to a severely disordered sodium cation. The results correlate with available data from similar complexes.

Spectral studies of morin in aqueous ethanol and other alcohols have been carried out as a function of its concentration and that of ethanol, and the pH of aqueous buffer. The effect of gamma radiations on morin solution in ethanol was also studied as a function of dose in the range of 0.15–2.28 kGy and of morin concentration (10–5–10–4 mole·dm–3). Morin concentration in ethanol solution showed a linear response for G values to a dose of 1.83 kGy. Molar absorption coefficients () for morin in ethanol have been estimated to be 260nm=2.28·104 dm3·mol–1·cm–1 and 291nm=8.22·103 dm3·mol–1·cm–1 for unirradiated and 291 nm=1.75·104 dm3·mol–1·cm–1 for irradiated solutions to a dose of 1.83 kGy.

Complete structural characterization of dibenzo-18-crown-6·2 CH3NO2 and dibenzo-18-crown-6·2 CH3CN have been carried out, including location and refinement of the methyl hydrogen atoms. Dibenzo-18-crown-6·2 CH3NO2 is monoclinic,P21/c, with (at –150°C)a=9.573(2),b=14.636(2),c=33.471(7) Å, =93.77(2)°, andD calc=1.37 g cm–3 forZ=8. Interactions between the solvent methyl groups and the crown ethers and other solvent nitro groups associate the 1 : 2 complexes into polymeric chains alongb. The acetonitrile adduct exists as discreet 1 : 2 complexes in the solid state with C–H...O interactions exlusively to the ether. This complex is triclinic,P 1, with (at –150°C)a=9.458(6),b=9.570(5),c=14.404(5) Å, =73.18(4), =79.85(5), =66.82(6)°, andD calc=1.28 g cm–3 forZ=2. A new coordination compound [Co(Pht)(2-MeIm)2] (I), where Pht2–is the deprotonated radical of o-phthalic acid (H2Pht) and 2-MeIm is 2-methylimidazole, was synthesized. Its structure was established using X-ray diffraction analysis. The crystal is orthorhombic: space group Pca21, a= 15.350(3), b= 7.957(2), c= 13.997(3) Å, (calcd.) = 1.505 g/cm3, and Z= 4. The tetrahedral coordination of the Co(II) atom includes two N atoms of two 2-methylimidazole molecules and two oxygen atoms of two carboxyl groups from different acid radicals. The Co–N distances are equal to 2.022(2) and 2.031(2) Å, while the Co–O distances are 1.972(2) and 2.000(2) Å. The carboxyl groups of the Pht2–radical and the aromatic nucleus form angles of 47.2° and 35.9°, whereas the angle formed by the carboxyl groups themselves is 50.3°. Compound Iis a polymer, which is confirmed by the 1,6-bridging function of the o-phthalic acid radical. The Co···Co distance in a chain is equal to 7.367 Å. Separate chains are united in the crystal into a framework via N–H···O hydrogen bonds.

A new selective, sensitive, and simple kinetic method is developed for the determination of trace amounts of chromium (VI). The method is based on the catalytic effect of Cr(VI) on the reaction of sodium pyrogallol-5-sulphonate (PS) with hydrogen peroxide. The reaction is followed spectrophotometrically by tracing the oxidation product at 437nm within 1min after addition of H2O2. The optimum reaction conditions are PS (1.32·10–3mol·dm–3), H2O2 (0.32mol·dm–3), HClO4 (2.6·10–3mol·dm–3) at 25°C. Following this procedure, chromium (VI) can be determined with a linear calibration graph up to 0.25ng·cm–3 and a detection limit of 0.024ng·cm–3, based on the 3 criterion. The interference effect of several species was also investigated and it was found that the most common cations and anions do not interfere with the determination. The developed procedure was successfully applied to the determination of Cr(VI) and total Cr in river waters and total Cr in herbal samples.

PVC samples were irradiated for 1 hour with a thermal neutron flux of th =4.71·1011n·cm–2·s–1 and the chlorine lost during irradiation was measured by -ray spectrometry. About 15% of loss of chlorine has been observed for untreated samples while samples heated to temperatures of 60 and 80°C for one minute before irradiation have been found to loose about 8% and 3%, respectively. The results indicate an influence of the polymer structure on the release of chlorine.

Summary A Rapid Method for Spectrophotometric Determination of Molybdenum in Alloy Steels Molybdenum (VI) forms an orange-red coloured mixed-ligand complex with perazine dimalonate and thiocyanate at room temperature (27°) in hydrochloric acid. The complex is soluble in ethanol. It exhibits absorption maximum at 460 nm. Beer's law is valid over the molybdenum concentration range 0.1–14.0,g/ml. Sandell's sensitivity of the reaction is 0.9·10–3 g Mo/cm2 and the molar extinction coefficient is 1.06·104 1·mol–1·cm–1 at 460 nm. The stoichiometry of the complex is (Perazine·H) [MoO(SCN)4] as shown by Job's method, equilibrium shift method and elemental analyses of the isolated complex. The proposed method has been used for the determination of molybdenum in ores, alloy steels and in synthetic mixtures containing chromium, tungsten, iron, cobalt, nickel and copper.Presented at the 36th Pittsburgh Conference and Exposition on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, New Orleans, February 25-March 1, 1985.

Kinetics of the esterification of aceticanhydride (I) with methanol (II) without any solvent were investigated by means of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Increasing of the methoxyproton-signal intensity of the ester was evaluated by electronic integration and thus the kinetic run was determined. The law: rate=k·[I]·[II] is satisfied by the experimental data from the concentration range [I][II]=11 up to 16,7;k=7,17·10–5 (20°C), and 15,30·10–5 (30°C) mol–1·l·min–1; S *=–42Cl. From these results we concluded that first I and II react, forming protonized methyl acetate and acetate-anion, and that this protonized ester rapidly delivers the proton.

The simultaneous determination of U(VI), Pu(VI), Pu(V) in 0.5–4.0 M NaOH has been elaborated by means of classical and differential pulse voltamperometry. U(VI) is determined with a dropping mercury electrode (DME) at the half-wave potential of E1/2=–0.89 V vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode due to reduction to U(V). The limiting current or peak heights are proportional to uranium(VI) concentration in the range of 1.3.10–7–3·10–4 M U(VI). Deviation from proportionality is observed for higher concentrations due to polymerization of uranates. Pu(VI) and Pu(V) are determined with a platinum rotating electrode at E1/2=–0.02 V due to the reaction Pu(VI)+e»Pu(V) and with DME at E1/2=–1.1 V due to the reduction to Pu(III). The limiting currents of both Pu(VI) and Pu(V) are proportional to their concentrations in the range of 4·10–6–1.2·10–3 M Pu. The determination of U(VI), Pu(VI), Pu(V) is not interfered by the presence of the following salts: 2M NaNO3, 2M NaNO2, 1.5M NaAlO2, 0.5M NaF and ions of Mo(VI), W(VI), V(V), Cu(II). The presence of CrO 4 2– and FeO 2 ions disturbs the determination of U(VI) in 1–4M NaOH, however, contribution of the reaction Fe(III)+e»Fe(II) to uranium reduction peak can be calculated from the height of the second peak Fe(II)+2 e»Fe(0).

In an investigation of electronic and ESR spectra, it has been established that titanium(III) with the thiocyanate ion (in ethanol) forms distorted tetrahedral and octahedral complexes. The tetrahedral compounds, which are hydroxo complexes of titanium(III) that contain one hydroxyl group and three thiocyanate ions in the coordination sphere, give signals in the ESR spectra with go=1.960, Ao=15.0·10–4 cm–1 g=1.958, A Ti =26.4·10–4cm–1, g= 1.691, ATi=9.0·10–4 cm–1. In the ESR spectra of liquid solutions, additional splitting on the nitrogen atoms is manifested(A o N =2.2·10–4 cm–1), which indicates bonding of thiocyanate ions through the nitrogen atom. The pseudo-octahedral complexes of titanium(III), containing from two to six thiocyanate ions in the coordination sphere, are characterized by d-d absorption bands in the 520–590 nm region; and at 77°K, they give anisotropic ESR signals. On the basis of the temperature dependences of the equilibrium constants for the reaction of conversion of the tetrahedral complexes to the octahedral complexes, and also the lifetimes of the tetrahedral complexes, values have been estimated for the heat of reaction (H=26.8 kJ/mole) and the entropy change (S=–1.66 kJ/mole·°K) of the equilibrium process, and also the activation energy for the reaction of titanium(III) thiocyanate formation (E=37 kJ/mole).Translated from Teoreticheskaya i Éksperimental'naya Khimiya, Vol. 21, No. 5, pp. 560–567, September–October, 1985.

Summary A polarographic method has been developed for the determination of 2,2-dicinchonic acid in 15% ammonium acetate solution as fundamental electrolyte. The two-stage reduction is shown by two polarographic stages, whose half-stage potentials as referred to the saturated calomel electrode amount toE 1/2=–0.74 V andE 1/2=–1.28 V.The two characteristic maxima were removed by 0.05% gelatin solution and the oxygen was eliminated by means of hydrogen produced electrolytically. The linear dependence of the diffusion current for both current stages of the acid were established in two concentration ranges —from 1·10–4 to 3·10–4 M and from 0.5·10–3 to 3·10–3 M.

The polymerization of di-2[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethyl itaconate (1) with dimethyl 2,2-azobisisobutyrate (2) was studied, in benzene, kinetically and spectroscopically with the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) method. The polymerization rate (R p) at 50°C is given by the equation:R p=k[2]0.48 [1]2.4. The overall activation energy of polymerization was calculated to be 34 kJ·mol–1. From an EPR study, the polymerization system was found to involve EPR-observable propagating polymer radicals of 1 under the actual polymerization conditions. Using the polymer radical concentration, the rate constants of propagation (k p) and termination (k t) were determined. With increasing monomer concentration,k p(1.54.3 L·mol–1·s–1 at 50°C) increases andk t (1.0·1044.2·104 L·mol–1·s–1 at 50°C) decreases, which seems responsible for the high dependence ofR p on the monomer concentration. The activation energies of propagation and termination were calculated to be 11 kJ·mol–1 and 84 kJ·mol–1, respectively. For the copolymerization of 1(M 1) and styrene (M 2) at 50°C in benzene the following copolymerization parameters were found:r 1=0.2,r 2=0.53, Q1=0.57, ande 1=+0.7.

In cluster II, Pd atoms form a planar six-membered cycle with Pd···Pd distances of 3.083–3.127 Å. The neighboring palladium atoms are bound by two mercaptide bridges. The formation of analogous clusters in solution was confirmed by IR spectroscopy.
