We study the geometry of the 5-dimensional space of real homogeneous quartic forms in two variables, and the way it is foliated into GL2()-orbits under linear changes of variable. In a suitable 3-dimensional cross-section, orbits of degenerate quartic forms (with zero discriminant) are determined by a singular ruled surface equipped with whiskers, the Holy Grail. Non-degenerate forms are classified by their J-invariant and we describe how the constant-J surfaces are draped around the skeleton of the Holy Grail. The results are of interest in Singularity Theory.  相似文献

If is a binary cubic form with integer coefficients such that has at least two distinct complex roots, then the equation possesses at most ten solutions in integers and , nine if has a nontrivial automorphism group. If, further, is reducible over , then this equation has at most solutions, unless is equivalent under -action to either or . The proofs of these results rely upon the method of Thue-Siegel as refined by Evertse, together with lower bounds for linear forms in logarithms of algebraic numbers and techniques from computational Diophantine approximation. Along the way, we completely solve all Thue equations for cubic and irreducible of positive discriminant . As corollaries, we obtain bounds for the number of solutions to more general cubic Thue equations of the form and to Mordell's equation , where and are nonzero integers.

Algorithms for numerical computation of symmetric elliptic integrals of all three kinds are improved in several ways and extended to complex values of the variables (with some restrictions in the case of the integral of the third kind). Numerical check values, consistency checks, and relations to Legendre's integrals and Bulirsch's integrals are included.This work was supported by the Director of Energy Research, Office of Basic Energy Sciences. We obtain an integral formula for a solution to a general algebraic equation. In this formula the integrand is an elementary function and integration is carried out over an interval. The advantage of this formula over the well-known Mellin formula is that the integral has a broader convergence domain. Any product of real powers of Jacobian elliptic functions can be written in the form . If all three 's are even integers, the indefinite integral of this product with respect to is a constant times a multivariate hypergeometric function with half-odd-integral 's and , showing it to be an incomplete elliptic integral of the second kind unless all three 's are 0. Permutations of c, d, and n in the integrand produce the same permutations of the variables }, allowing as many as six integrals to take a unified form. Thirty -functions of the type specified, incorporating 136 integrals, are reduced to a new choice of standard elliptic integrals obtained by permuting , , and in , which is symmetric in its first two variables and has an efficient algorithm for numerical computation.

In a recent paper Dattoli and Srivastava [3], by resorting to umbral calculus, conjectured several generating functions involving harmonic numbers. In this sequel to their work our aim is to rigorously demonstrate the truth of the Dattoli-Srivastava conjectures by making use of simple analytical arguments. We find two-sided inequalities for the generalized hypergeometric function of the form q+1Fq(−x) with positive parameters restricted by certain additional conditions. Both lower and upper bounds agree with the value of q+1Fq(−x) at the endpoints of positive semi-axis and are asymptotically precise at one of the endpoints. The inequalities are derived from a theorem asserting the monotony of the quotient of two generalized hypergeometric functions with shifted parameters. The proofs hinge on a generalized Stieltjes representation of the generalized hypergeometric function. This representation also provides yet another method to deduce the second Thomae relation for 3F2(1) and leads to an integral representations of 4F3(x) in terms of the Appell function F3.
