The lithium (Li)–air battery has an ultrahigh theoretical specific energy, however, even in pure oxygen (O2), the vulnerability of conventional organic electrolytes and carbon cathodes towards reaction intermediates, especially O2, and corrosive oxidation and crack/pulverization of Li metal anode lead to poor cycling stability of the Li-air battery. Even worse, the water and/or CO2 in air bring parasitic reactions and safety issues. Therefore, applying such systems in open-air environment is challenging. Herein, contrary to previous assertions, we have found that CO2 can improve the stability of both anode and electrolyte, and a high-performance rechargeable Li–O2/CO2 battery is developed. The CO2 not only facilitates the in situ formation of a passivated protective Li2CO3 film on the Li anode, but also restrains side reactions involving electrolyte and cathode by capturing O2. Moreover, the Pd/CNT catalyst in the cathode can extend the battery lifespan by effectively tuning the product morphology and catalyzing the decomposition of Li2CO3. The Li–O2/CO2 battery achieves a full discharge capacity of 6628 mAh g−1 and a long life of 715 cycles, which is even better than those of pure Li–O2 batteries.  相似文献

Metal-air batteries, especially Li-air batteries, have attracted significant research attention in the past decade. However, the electrochemical reactions between CO2 (0.04 % in ambient air) with Li anode may lead to the irreversible formation of insulating Li2CO3, making the battery less rechargeable. To make the Li-CO2 batteries usable under ambient conditions, it is critical to develop highly efficient catalysts for the CO2 reduction and evolution reactions and investigate the electrochemical behavior of Li-CO2 batteries. Here, we demonstrate a rechargeable Li-CO2 battery with a high reversibility by using B,N-codoped holey graphene as a highly efficient catalyst for CO2 reduction and evolution reactions. Benefiting from the unique porous holey nanostructure and high catalytic activity of the cathode, the as-prepared Li-CO2 batteries exhibit high reversibility, low polarization, excellent rate performance, and superior long-term cycling stability over 200 cycles at a high current density of 1.0 A g−1. Our results open up new possibilities for the development of long-term Li-air batteries reusable under ambient conditions, and the utilization and storage of CO2.  相似文献

The increasing demand for high-energy storage systems has propelled the development of Li-air batteries and Li-O2/CO2 batteries to elucidate the mechanism and extend battery life. However, the high charge voltage of Li2CO3 accelerates the decomposition of traditional sulfone and ether electrolytes, thus adopting high-voltage electrolytes in Li-O2/CO2 batteries is vital to achieve a stable battery system. Herein, we adopt a commercial carbonate electrolyte to prove its excellent suitability in Li-O2/CO2 batteries. The generated superoxide can be captured by CO2 to form less aggressive intermediates, stabilizing the carbonate electrolyte without reactive oxygen species induced decomposition. In addition, this electrolyte permits the Li metal plating/stripping with a significantly improved reversibility, enabling the possibility of using ultra-thin Li anode. Benefiting from the good rechargeability of Li2CO3, less cathode passivation, and stabilized Li anode in carbonate electrolyte, the Li-O2/CO2 battery demonstrates a long cycling lifetime of 167 cycles at 0.1 mA·cm–2 and 0.25 mAh·cm–2. This work paves a new avenue for optimizing carbonate-based electrolytes for Li-O2 and Li-O2/CO2 batteries.   相似文献

Li-O2 batteries with ultrahigh theoretical energy densities usually suffer from low practical discharge capacities and inferior cycling stability owing to the cathode passivation caused by insulating discharge products and by-products. Here, a trifunctional ether-based redox mediator, 2,5-di-tert-butyl-1,4-dimethoxybenzene (DBDMB), is introduced into the electrolyte to capture reactive O2 and alleviate the rigorous oxidative environment of Li-O2 batteries. Thanks to the strong solvation effect of DBDMB towards Li+ and O2, it not only reduces the formation of by-products (a high Li2O2 yield of 96.6 %), but also promotes the solution growth of large-sized Li2O2 particles, avoiding the passivation of cathode as well as enabling a large discharge capacity. Moreover, DBDMB makes the oxidization of Li2O2 and the decomposition of main by-products (Li2CO3 and LiOH) proceed in a highly effective manner, prolonging the stability of Li-O2 batteries (243 cycles at 1000 mAh g−1 and 1000 mA g−1).  相似文献

Halide solid electrolytes, known for their high ionic conductivity at room temperature and good oxidative stability, face notable challenges in all–solid–state Li–ion batteries (ASSBs), especially with unstable cathode/solid electrolyte (SE) interface and increasing interfacial resistance during cycling. In this work, we have developed an Al3+–doped, cation–disordered epitaxial nanolayer on the LiCoO2 surface by reacting it with an artificially constructed AlPO4 nanoshell; this lithium–deficient layer featuring a rock–salt–like phase effectively suppresses oxidative decomposition of Li3InCl6 electrolyte and stabilizes the cathode/SE interface at 4.5 V. The ASSBs with the halide electrolyte Li3InCl6 and a high–loading LiCoO2 cathode demonstrated high discharge capacity and long cycling life from 3 to 4.5 V. Our findings emphasize the importance of specialized cathode surface modification in preventing SE degradation and achieving stable cycling of halide–based ASSBs at high voltages.  相似文献

Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used for electrical energy storage in portable devices and are promising systems for large-scale energy storage. However, their application is still limited due to electrode degradation and stability issues. To enhance the fundamental understanding of electrode degradation, we report on the Raman spectroscopic characterization of LiCoO2 cathode materials of working Li-ion batteries. To facilitate the spectroscopic analysis of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI), we apply in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy under battery working conditions by using Au nanoparticles coated with a thin SiO2 layer (Au@SiO2). We observe a surface-enhanced Raman signal of Li2CO3 at 1090 cm−1 during electrochemical cycling as an intermediate. Its formation/decomposition highlights the role of Li2CO3 as a component of the SEI on LiCoO2 composite cathodes. Our results demonstrate the potential of Raman spectroscopy to monitor electrode/electrolyte interfaces of lithium-ion batteries under working conditions thus allowing relations between electrochemical performance and structural changes to be established.  相似文献

Herein, we present a Li–air battery supported by a polymer electrolyte containing 0.05 m LiI, in which the polymer electrolyte efficiently alleviates the Li passivation induced by attacking air. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that I/I2 conversion in polymer electrolyte acts as a redox mediator that facilitates electrochemical decomposition of the discharge products during recharge process. As a result, the Li–air battery can be stably cycled 400 times in ambient air (relative humidity of 15 %), which is much better than previous reports. Solid alkali metal carbonates are universal passivation layer components of intercalation battery materials and common side products in metal‐O2 batteries, and are believed to form and decompose reversibly in metal‐O2/CO2 cells. In these cathodes, Li2CO3 decomposes to CO2 when exposed to potentials above 3.8 V vs. Li/Li+. However, O2 evolution, as would be expected according to the decomposition reaction 2 Li2CO3→4 Li++4 e?+2 CO2+O2, is not detected. O atoms are thus unaccounted for, which was previously ascribed to unidentified parasitic reactions. Here, we show that highly reactive singlet oxygen (1O2) forms upon oxidizing Li2CO3 in an aprotic electrolyte and therefore does not evolve as O2. These results have substantial implications for the long‐term cyclability of batteries: they underpin the importance of avoiding 1O2 in metal‐O2 batteries, question the possibility of a reversible metal‐O2/CO2 battery based on a carbonate discharge product, and help explain the interfacial reactivity of transition‐metal cathodes with residual Li2CO3.  相似文献

The lithium–air battery (LAB) is envisaged as an ultimate energy storage device because of its highest theoretical specific energy among all known batteries. However, parasitic reactions bring about vexing issues on the efficiency and longevity of the LAB, among which the formation and decomposition of lithium carbonate Li2CO3 is of paramount importance. The discovery of Li2CO3 as the main discharge product in carbonate‐based electrolytes once brought researchers to “the end of the idyll“ in the early 2010s. In the past few years, tremendous efforts have been made to understand the formation and decomposition mechanisms of Li2CO3, as well as to conceive novel chemical/material strategies to suppress the Li2CO3 formation and to facilitate the Li2CO3 decomposition. Moreover, the study on Li2CO3 in LABs is opening up a new research field in energy technology. Considering the rapid development and innumerous emerging issues, it is timely to recapitulate the current understandings, define the ambiguities and the scientific gaps, and discuss topics of high priority for future research, which is the aim of this Minireview.  相似文献

Elaborately designed multifunctional electrocatalysts capable of promoting Li+ and CO2 transport are essential for upgrading the cycling stability and rate capability of Li-CO2 batteries. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) with open channels and easily functionalized surfaces hold great potential for applications in efficient cathodes of Li-CO2 batteries. Herein, a robust HOFS (HOF-FJU-1) is introduced for the first time as a co-catalyst in the cathode material of Li-CO2 batteries. HOF-FJU-1 with cyano groups located periodically in the pore can induce homogeneous deposition of discharge products and accommodate volumetric expansion of discharge products during cycling. Besides, HOF-FJU-1 enables effective interaction between Ru0 nanoparticles and cyano groups, thus forming efficient and uniform catalytic sites for CRR/CER. Moreover, HOF-FJU-1 with regularly arranged open channels are beneficial for CO2 and Li+ transport, enabling rapid redox kinetic conversion of CO2. Therefore, the HOF-based Li-CO2 batteries are capable of stable operation at 400 mA g−1 for 1800 h and maintain a low overpotential of 1.96 V even at high current densities up to 5 A g−1. This work provides valuable guidance for developing multifunctional HOF-based catalysts to upgrade the longevity and rate capability of Li-CO2 batteries.  相似文献

Thermodynamic instability of positive electrodes (cathodes) in Li-ion batteries in humid air and battery solutions results in capacity fading and batteries degradation, especially at elevated temperatures. In this work, we studied thermal interactions between cathode materials Li2MnO3, xLi2MnO3 .(1???x)Li(MnNiCo)O2,LiNi0.33Mn0.33Co0.33O2, LiNi0.4Mn0.4Co0.2O2, LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4, LiMn(or Fe)PO4, and battery solutions containing ethylene carbonate (EC) or propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC) or ethylmethyl carbonate (EMC) and LiPF6 salt in the temperature range of 40–400 °C. It was found that these materials are stable chemically and well performing in LiPF6-based solutions up to 60 °C. The thermal decomposition of the electrolyte solutions starts >180 °C. The macro-structural transformations of cathode materials upon exothermic reactions were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray difraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies have shown that the exothermic reactions in the temperature range of 60–140 °C lead to partial decomposition of both the cathode material and electrolyte solution. The systems thus formed consisted of partially decomposed solutions and partially chemically delithiated cathode materials covered by reactions products. Thermal reactions terminate and this system reaches equilibrium at about 120 °C. It remains stable up to the beginning of the solution decomposition at about 180 °C. The increased content of surface Li2CO3 is found to significantly affect the thermal processes at high temperature range due to extensive exothermic decomposition at low temperatures.  相似文献

The lithium–sulfur battery is an attractive option for next‐generation energy storage owing to its much higher theoretical energy density than state‐of‐the‐art lithium‐ion batteries. However, the massive volume changes of the sulfur cathode and the uncontrollable deposition of Li2S2/Li2S significantly deteriorate cycling life and increase voltage polarization. To address these challenges, we develop an ?‐caprolactam/acetamide based eutectic‐solvent electrolyte, which can dissolve all lithium polysulfides and lithium sulfide (Li2S8–Li2S). With this new electrolyte, high specific capacity (1360 mAh g?1) and reasonable cycling stability are achieved. Moreover, in contrast to conventional ether electrolyte with a low flash point (ca. 2 °C), such low‐cost eutectic‐solvent‐based electrolyte is difficult to ignite, and thus can dramatically enhance battery safety. This research provides a new approach to improving lithium–sulfur batteries in aspects of both safety and performance.  相似文献

A sulfide-based Li-argyrodite, Li6PS5X (X = Cl, Br, I), is a promising solid-state electrolyte candidate for next-generation all-solid-state batteries. The compound features high ionic conductivity, which is attributed to the high polarizability of sulfur and anion site disorder, providing advantageous crystallographic geometries for Li-ions to occupy and diffuse. However, the chemical instability of Li6PS5Cl during cycling limits its implementation in practical applications. This study employs graphene fluoride as a conductive agent for the cathode composite to alleviate the undesirable decomposition reactions at the electrolyte interface. The combined measurements of time-dependent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical analysis confirmed that graphene fluoride significantly enhances the chemical stability of the electrolyte interface, yielding a stable cycling performance.  相似文献

The two major issues confronting the commercialization of rechargeable lithium-sulfur (Li−S) batteries are the sluggish kinetics of the sulfur electrochemical reactions on the cathode and inadequate lithium deposition/stripping reversibility on the anode. They are commonly mitigated with additives designed specifically for the anode and the cathode individually. Here, we report the use of a single cathode modifier, In2Se3, which can effectively catalyse the polysulfide reactions on the cathode, and also improve the reversibility of Li deposition and removal on the anode through a LiInS2/LiInSe2 containing solid electrolyte interface formed in situ by the Se and In ions dissolved in the electrolyte. The amounts of dissolved Se and In are small relative to the amount of In2Se3 administered. The benefits of using this single modification approach were verified in Li-metal anode-free Li−S batteries with a Li2S loading of 4 mg cm−2 and a low electrolyte/Li2S ratio of 7.5 μL mg−1. The resulting battery showed 60 % capacity retention after 160 cycles at the 0.2 C rate and an average Coulombic efficiency of 98.27 %, comparing very well with recent studies using separate electrode modifiers.  相似文献

Nonaqueous Li–O2 batteries attract attention for their theoretical specific energy density. However, due to the difficulty of decomposition of Li2O2, Li–O2 batteries have high charge overpotential and poor cycling life. So all kinds of catalysts have been studied on the cathode. Compared to heterogeneous solid catalysts, soluble catalysts achieve faster and more effective transport of electrons by reversible redox pairs. Here, we first report ruthenocene (Ruc) as a mobile redox mediator in a Li–O2 battery. 0.01 mol/L Ruc in the electrolyte effectively reduces the charging voltage by 610 mV. Additionally, Ruc greatly increases the cycling life by four-fold (up to 83 cycles) with a simple ketjen black (KB) cathode. The results of SEM, XPS and XRD confirm that less discharge product residue accumulated after recharge. To verify the reaction mechanisms of the mediator, free energy profiles of the possible reaction pathways based on DFT are provided.  相似文献

Lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs) are well known for their high energy density. However, their reversibility and rate performance are challenged due to the sluggish oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) kinetics, serious side reactions and uncontrollable Li dendrite growth. The electrolyte plays a key role in transport of Li+ and reactive oxygen species in LOBs. Here, we tailored a dilute electrolyte by screening suitable crown ether additives to promote lithium salt dissociation and Li+ solvation through electrostatic interaction. The electrolyte containing 100 mM 18-crown-6 ether (100-18C6) exhibits enhanced electrochemical stability and triggers a solution-mediated Li2O2 growth pathway in LOBs, showing high discharge capacity of 10 828.8 mAh gcarbon−1. Moreover, optimized electrode/electrolyte interfaces promote ORR/OER kinetics on cathode and achieve dendrite-free Li anode, which enhances the cycle life. This work casts new lights on the design of low-cost dilute electrolytes for high performance LOBs.  相似文献
