Lifetime and relaxation processes in solid polymers

The relationship between relaxation processes and the fracture of solid polymers is examined with reference to the example of repeat loading with recovery. An investigation of polymethyl methacrylate, KAST-V glass laminate, and a Finnish polyester glass-reinforced plastic has shown that this lifetime may be considerably (several orders) shorter than that at the same level of constant stress. This is attributed to the time dependence of the structure-sensitive coefficient in the lifetime equation and is illustrated by means of a model that includes a Regel' fracture element.Moscow Lenin State Pedagogical Institute, Problem Laboratory of Polymer Physics. Lifetime maximization in wireless directional sensor network

This paper addresses two versions of a lifetime maximization problem for target coverage with wireless directional sensor networks. The sensors used in these networks have a maximum sensing range and a limited sensing angle. In the first problem version, predefined sensing directions are assumed to be given, whereas sensing directions can be freely devised in the second problem version. In that case, a polynomial-time algorithm is provided for building sensing directions that allow to maximize the network lifetime. A column generation algorithm is proposed for both problem versions, the subproblem being addressed with a hybrid approach based on a genetic algorithm, and an integer linear programming formulation. Numerical results show that addressing the second problem version allows for significant improvements in terms of network lifetime while the computational effort is comparable for both problem versions.

Subplanes of projective planes of order 121

We determine orbit representatives of all proper subplanes generated by quadrangles of a Veblen-Wedderburn (VW) plane Π of order 11² and the Hughes plane Σ of order 11² under their full collineation groups. In Π, there are 13 orbits of Baer subplanes all of which are desarguesian and approximately 3000 orbits of Fano subplanes. In Σ, there are 8 orbits of Baer subplanes all of which are desarguesian, 2 orbits of subplanes of order 3 and at most 408,075 distinct Fano subplanes. This work was motivated by the well-known question: “Does there exist a non-desarguesian projective plane of prime order?” The question remains unsettled.

On the Lifetime of Quasi-Stationary States in Non-Relativistic QED

We consider resonances in the Pauli–Fierz model of non-relativistic QED. We use and slightly modify the analysis developed by Bach, Fr?hlich, and Sigal [3, 4] to obtain an upper and lower bound on the lifetime of quasistationary states. Submitted: September 30, 2007. Accepted: March 28, 2008.     

Household Lifetime Strategies under a Self-Contagious Market

In this paper, we consider the optimal strategies in asset allocation, consumption, and life insurance for a household with an exogenous stochastic income under a self-contagious market which is modeled by bivariate self-exciting Hawkes jump processes. By using the Hawkes process, jump intensities of the risky asset depend on the history path of that asset. In addition to the financial risk, the household is also subject to an uncertain lifetime and a fixed retirement date. A lump-sum payment will be paid as a heritage, if the wage earner dies before the retirement date. Under the dynamic programming principle, explicit solutions of the optimal controls are obtained when asset prices follow special jump distributions. For more general cases, we apply the Feynman–Kac formula and develop an iterative numerical scheme to derive the optimal strategies. We also prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the fixed point equation and the convergence of an iterative numerical algorithm. Numerical examples are presented to show the effect of jump intensities on the optimal controls.     

泥质盐岩单轴蠕变寿命研究

岩石流变力学的研究中，蠕变寿命是一个重要问题.由于长期蠕变试验资料的缺乏，难以估计蠕变破坏时间.该文进行了泥质盐岩单轴全应力 应变压缩试验，并采用陈氏加载法进行了单轴蠕变试验.对蠕变曲线进行了处理，获得了不同应力水平下的蠕变曲线簇，进而得到了等时应力-应变曲线簇.通过拟合分析，建立了等时应力-应变曲线割线模量随时间变化关系模型和等时应力 应变曲线的数学模型.对等时应力 应变曲线与全应力-应变曲线之间的关系进行了分析，获得了蠕变破坏强度和破坏应变分别与蠕变寿命之间的数学表达式.该文研究成果可以估计泥质盐岩的蠕变寿命、长期强度、长期模量、蠕变破坏线和蠕变终止线，对相关岩石流变寿命的估计具有借鉴意义.     

Lifetime of amorphous polymers under intermittent loading

The lifetimes of two types of amorphous polymers (polyvinyl chloride and plasticized epoxy resin) under intermittent loading have been investigated. It is established that the lifetime, determined without allowance for recovery time, is less than that under constant load. Under periodic loading at constant stress the lifetime varies with the loading regime. For each of the investigated polymers a lifetime minimum is observed at a certain duration of the loading and recovery periods.Higher Chemical Technology Institute, Sofia.
