Isolated invariant curves of a foliation

We bound the equisingularity type of the set of isolated separatrices of a holomorphic foliation of in terms of the Milnor number of . This result gives a bound for the degree of an algebraic invariant curve of a foliation of in terms of the degree of , provided that all the branches of are isolated separatrices.

     

Equivalence of domains arising from duality of orbits on flag manifolds II

S. Gindikin and the author defined a - invariant subset of for each -orbit on every flag manifold and conjectured that the connected component of the identity would be equal to the Akhiezer-Gindikin domain if is of nonholomorphic type. This conjecture was proved for closed in the works of J. A. Wolf, R. Zierau, G. Fels, A. Huckleberry and the author. It was also proved for open by the author. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for all the other orbits when is of non-Hermitian type.

     

Nikolskii-type inequalities for shift invariant function spaces

We establish a homeomorphism between the moduli space of ordered -tuples of 2-dimensional linear subspaces (mod ) and the quotient by simultaneous conjugation of a certain open subset . For , this leads to an explicit computation of the moduli space of central 2-arrangements in mod and its subspace of those classes that contain a complex hyperplane arrangement.

     

Algebraic structures determined by 3 by 3 matrix geometry

Using a ``3 by 3 matrix trick' we show that multiplication (an algebraic structure) in a *-algebra is determined by the geometry of the *-algebra of the 3 by 3 matrices with entries from , . This is an example of an algebra-geometry duality which, we claim, has applications.

     

On commutators of fractional integrals

Let be the infinitesimal generator of an analytic semigroup on with Gaussian kernel bounds, and let be the fractional integrals of for . For a BMO function on , we show boundedness of the commutators from to , where . Our result of this boundedness still holds when is replaced by a Lipschitz domain of with infinite measure. We give applications to large classes of differential operators such as the magnetic Schrödinger operators and second-order elliptic operators of divergence form.

     

A formula for -hyponormality of backstep extensions of subnormal weighted shifts

Let be a weight sequence of positive real numbers and let be a subnormal weighted shift with a weight sequence . Consider an extended weight sequence with and let 0: W_{\alpha (x)} \text{is} k \text{-hyponormal}\}$">for , where is the set of natural numbers. We obtain a formula to find the interval , which provides several examples to distinguish the classes of -hyponormal operators from one another.

     

Hyperbolic unit groups

In this paper we study the groups whose integral group rings have hyperbolic unit groups . We classify completely the torsion subgroups of and the polycyclic-by-finite subgroups of the group . Finally, we classify the groups for which the boundary of has dimension zero.

     

Estimates of Gromov's box distance

In 1999, M. Gromov introduced the box distance function on the space of all mm-spaces. In this paper, by using the method of T. H. Colding, we estimate and , where is the -dimensional unit sphere in and is the -dimensional complex projective space equipped with the Fubini-Study metric. In particular, we give the complete answer to an exercise of Gromov's green book. We also estimate from below, where is the special orthogonal group.

     

Almost everywhere convergence of inverse Fourier transforms

We show that if , then the inverse Fourier transform of converges almost everywhere. Here the partial integrals in the Fourier inversion formula come from dilates of a closed bounded neighbourhood of the origin which is star shaped with respect to 0. Our proof is based on a simple application of the Rademacher-Menshov Theorem. In the special case of spherical partial integrals, the theorem was proved by Carbery and Soria. We obtain some partial results when and . We also consider sequential convergence for general elements of .

     

Segal-Bargmann transforms of one-mode interacting Fock spaces associated with Gaussian and Poisson measures

Let and denote the Gaussian and Poisson measures on , respectively. We show that there exists a unique measure on such that under the Segal-Bargmann transform the space is isomorphic to the space of analytic -functions on with respect to . We also introduce the Segal-Bargmann transform for the Poisson measure and prove the corresponding result. As a consequence, when and have the same variance, and are isomorphic to the same space under the - and -transforms, respectively. However, we show that the multiplication operators by on and on act quite differently on .

     

Cofinality changes required for a large set of unapproachable ordinals below

In , assume that is a strong limit cardinal and . Let be the set of approachable ordinals less than . An open question of M. Foreman is whether can be non-stationary in some and preserving extension of . It is shown here that if is such an outer model, then is infinite, for each positive integer .

     

A note on Gabor orthonormal bases

The study of Gabor bases of the form for has interested many mathematicians in recent years. Alex Losevich and Steen Pedersen in 1998, Jeffery C. Lagarias, James A. Reeds and Yang Wang in 2000 independently proved that, for any fixed positive integer , is an orthonormal basis for if and only if is a tiling of . Palle E. T. Jorgensen and Steen Pedersen in 1999 gave an explicit characterization of such for , , . Inspired by their work, this paper addresses Gabor orthonormal bases of the form for and some other related problems, where is as above. For a fixed , the generating function of a Gabor orthonormal basis for corresponding to the above is characterized explicitly provided that , which is new even if ; a Shannon type sampling theorem about such is derived when , ; for an arbitrary positive integer , an explicit expression of the with being an orthonormal basis for is obtained under the condition that .

     

Analytic extension of differentiable functions defined in closed sets by means of continuous linear operators

In this paper we solve the following problem posed by Schmets and Valdivia: Under which conditions does there exist an extension operator from the space of the Whitney jets on a closed set to so that the extended functions are real analytic outside ?

     

A multiplicity theorem for the Neumann problem

Hilbert modules over a class of semicrossed products

Given the disk algebra and an automorphism , there is associated a non-self-adjoint operator algebra called the semicrossed product of with . Buske and Peters showed that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the contractive Hilbert modules over and pairs of contractions and on satisfying . In this paper, we show that the orthogonally projective and Shilov Hilbert modules over correspond to pairs of isometries on satisfying . The problem of commutant lifting for is left open, but some related results are presented.     

Quadratic initial ideals of root systems

Let be one of the root systems , , and and write for the set of positive roots of together with the origin of . Let denote the Laurent polynomial ring over a field and write for the affine semigroup ring which is generated by those monomials with , where if . Let denote the polynomial ring over and write for the toric ideal of . Thus is the kernel of the surjective homomorphism defined by setting for all . In their combinatorial study of hypergeometric functions associated with root systems, Gelfand, Graev and Postnikov discovered a quadratic initial ideal of the toric ideal of . The purpose of the present paper is to show the existence of a reverse lexicographic (squarefree) quadratic initial ideal of the toric ideal of each of , and . It then follows that the convex polytope of the convex hull of each of , and possesses a regular unimodular triangulation arising from a flag complex, and that each of the affine semigroup rings , and is Koszul.     

A note on invertibility preservers on Banach algebras

Let be be semisimple Banach algebras and let be a unital bijective linear operator that preserves invertibility. If the socle of is an essential ideal of , then is a Jordan isomorphism.

     

Poincaré duality algebras and rings of coinvariants

Let be a faithful representation of a finite group over the field . Via the group acts on and hence on the algebra of homogenous polynomial functions on the vector space . R. Kane (1994) formulated the following result based on the work of R. Steinberg (1964): If the field has characteristic 0, then is a Poincaré duality algebra if and only if is a pseudoreflection group. The purpose of this note is to extend this result to the case (i.e. the order of is relatively prime to the characteristic of ).

     

The depth of an ideal with a given Hilbert function
