Recent studies have shown that the reactivity of the 4-dehydropyridinium cation significantly differs from the reactivities of its isomers toward tetrahydrofuran. While only hydrogen atom abstraction was observed for the 2- and 3-dehydropyridinium cations, nonradical reactions were observed for the 4-isomer. In order to learn more about these reactions, the gas-phase reactivities of the 4-dehydropyridinium cation and several of its derivatives toward tetrahydrofuran were investigated in a Fourier transform ion electron resonance mass spectrometer. Both radical and nonradical reactions were observed for most of these positively charged radicals. The major parameter determining whether nonradical reactions occur was found to be the electron affinity of the radicals--only those with relatively high electron affinities underwent nonradical reactions. The reactivities of the monoradicals are also affected by hydrogen bonding and steric effects.  相似文献

Polar effects are demonstrated to play an important role in controlling the reactivity of polyaromatic sigma-radicals that are structurally related to the active intermediates of the enediyne anticancer type antibiotics. This was accomplished by measuring the rate constants of hydrogen atom abstraction for novel, charged dehydroquinolines, dehydroisoquinolines, dehydrobenzenes, and dehydronaphthalenes in the gas phase by using Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. The reactivity trends observed for these radicals upon hydrogen atom abstraction from tetrahydrofuran and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, simple models of deoxyribose, do not reflect differences in reaction exothermicities, radical sizes, exact location of the radical site in the ring system, or heteroatom-radical site distances. However, the reactivity trends match the trend in the calculated electron affinities of the radicals. The radicals' different electrophilicities result in variations in the reaction barrier due to different extents of polarization of the transition state. Generally, the reaction efficiencies are the greatest when the formally charged heteroatom is contained within the same ring system as the radical site. In this case, polar effects have the greatest influence on radical reactivity. Hence, insertion of a basic heteroatom (which gets protonated in biological systems) into specific locations in the polyaromatic ring system of the sigma-biradicals, which ultimately cause cleavage of DNA exposed to the enediyne antitumor drugs, should allow tuning of the reactivity of these radicals.  相似文献

DFT calculations have been performed with the B3LYP and MPW1K functional on the hydrogen atom abstraction reactions of ethenoxyl with ethenol and of phenoxyl with both phenol and alpha-naphthol. Comparison with the results of G3 calculations shows that B3LYP seriously underestimates the barrier heights for the reaction of ethenoxyl with ethenol by both proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanisms. The MPW1K functional also underestimates the barrier heights, but by much less than B3LYP. Similarly, comparison with the results of experiments on the reaction of phenoxyl radical with alpha-naphthol indicates that the barrier height for the preferred PCET mechanism is calculated more accurately by MPW1K than by B3LYP. These findings indicate that the MPW1K functional is much better suited than B3LYP for calculations on hydrogen abstraction reactions by both HAT and PCET mechanisms.  相似文献

The hydrogen abstraction reactions of 1,1‐ and 1,2‐difluoroethane with the OH radical have been investigated by the ab initio molecular orbital theory. The geometries of the reactants, products, and transition states have been optimized at the (U)MP2=full level of theory in conjunction with 6‐311G(d,p) basis functions. Single‐point (U)MP2=full with larger basis set, such as 6‐311G(3d,2p), and QCISD(T)=full/6‐311G(d,p) calculations have also been carried out to observe the effects of basis sets utilized and higher order electron correlation. Three and four reaction channels have been identified for 1,1‐ and 1,2‐difluoroethane, respectively. In the case of 1,1‐difluoroethane, hydrogen abstraction from the α‐carbon has been found to be easier than that from the β‐carbon. The barriers of the four reaction channels for 1,2‐difluoroethane are close to each other. Weak hydrogen bonding interactions have been observed between hydroxyl hydrogen and a fluorine atom in the transition states. Rate constants for the reactions of 1,1‐ and 1,2‐difluoroethane with the OH radical have been calculated using the standard transition state theory and found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The reactivity of 10 charged phenyl radicals toward several amino acids was examined in the gas phase in a dual-cell Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer. All radicals abstract a hydrogen atom from the amino acids, as expected. The most electrophilic radicals (with the greatest calculated vertical electron affinities (EA) at the radical site) also react with these amino acids via NH(2) abstraction (a nonradical nucleophilic addition-elimination reaction). Both the radical (hydrogen atom abstraction) and nonradical (NH(2) abstraction) reaction efficiencies were found to increase with the electrophilicity (EA) of the radical. However, NH(2) abstraction is more strongly influenced by EA. In contrast to an earlier report, the ionization energies of the amino acids do not appear to play a general reactivity-controlling role. Studies using several partially deuterium-labeled amino acids revealed that abstraction of a hydrogen atom from the α-carbon is only preferred for glycine; for the other amino acids, a hydrogen atom is preferentially abstracted from the side chain. The electrophilicity of the radicals does not appear to have a major influence on the site from which the hydrogen atom is abstracted. Hence, the regioselectivity of hydrogen atom abstraction appears to be independent of the structure of the radical but dependent on the structure of the amino acid. Surprisingly, abstraction of two hydrogen atoms was observed for the N-(3-nitro-5-dehydrophenyl)pyridinium radical, indicating that substituents on the radical not only influence the EA of the radical but also can be involved in the reaction. In disagreement with an earlier report, proline was found to display several unprecedented reaction pathways that likely do not proceed via a radical mechanism but rather by a nucleophilic addition-elimination mechanism. Both NH(2) and (15)NH(2) groups were abstracted from lysine labeled with (15)N on the side chain, indicating that NH(2) abstraction occurs both from the amino terminus and from the side chain. Quantum chemical calculations were employed to obtain insights into some of the reaction mechanisms.  相似文献

The vertical electron affinity is demonstrated to be a key factor in controlling the selectivity of charged phenyl radicals in hydrogen atom abstraction from isopropanol in the gas phase. The measurement of the total reaction efficiencies (hydrogen and/or deuterium atom abstraction) for unlabeled and partially deuterium-labeled isopropanol, and the branching ratios of hydrogen and deuterium atom abstraction, by using a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometer, allowed the determination of the selectivity for each site in the unlabeled isopropanol. Examination of hydrogen atom abstraction from isopropanol by eight structurally different radicals revealed that the preferred site is the CH group. The selectivity of the charged phenyl radicals correlates with the radical's vertical electron affinity and the reaction efficiency. The smaller the vertical electron affinity of a radical, the lower its reactivity, and the greater the preference for the thermodynamically favored CH group over the CH3 group or the OH group. As the vertical electron affinity increases from 4.87 to 6.28 eV, the primary kinetic isotope effects decrease from 2.9 to 1.3 for the CD group, and the mixture of primary and alpha-secondary kinetic isotopes decreases from 6.0 to 2.4 for the CD3 group.  相似文献

The gas-phase reactions of sugars with aromatic, carbon-centered sigma,sigma-biradicals with varying polarities [as reflected by their calculated electron affinities (EA)] and extent of spin-spin coupling [as reflected by their calculated singlet-triplet (S-T) gaps] have been studied. The biradicals are positively charged, which allows them to be manipulated and their reactions to be studied in a Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer. Hydrogen atom abstraction from sugars was found to be the dominant reaction for the biradicals with large EA values, while the biradicals with large S-T gaps tend to form addition/elimination products instead. Hence, not all sigma, sigma-biradicals may be able to damage DNA by hydrogen atom abstraction. The overall reaction efficiencies of the biradicals towards a given substrate were found to be directly related to the magnitude of their EA values, and inversely related to their S-T gaps. The EA of a biradical appears to be a very important rate-controlling factor, and it may even counterbalance the reduced radical reactivity characteristic of singlet biradicals that have large S-T gaps.  相似文献

Vertical electron affinities (EA) are predicted for the lowest energy singlet states of the 21 didehydroquinolinium cation isomers and the 21 didehydroisoquinolinium cation isomers, as well as the doublet states of the seven dehydroquinolinium cation isomers, the seven dehydroisoquinolinium cation isomers, the seven N-methyldehydroquinolinium cations, and the seven N-methyldehydroisoquinolinium cations, by using density functional theory. For the monoradicals, the calculated EA of the radical site depends only on the distance from the (formally charged) nitrogen atom, and is reduced by 0.14-0.24 eV when the NH+ group is replaced with an NCH3+ group. Nearly all of the calculated EAs for the ortho biradicals are lower (by 0.04-0.72 eV) than those for either of the corresponding monoradicals. For the meta biradicals, the calculated EAs lie either between the EAs of the corresponding monoradicals or higher (by 0.07-0.58 eV), and they are extremely sensitive to the separation (distance) between the two dehydrocarbon atoms. For the biradicals that do not have either an ortho or meta relationship the calculated EAs are all higher (by 0.02-1.93 eV) than those for either of the corresponding monoradicals. The EAs are examined to gain insight into the nature of inductive/field and resonance effects that influence the electrophilicity of the radical site(s), which is a major factor controlling the reactivity of these types of (bi)radicals.  相似文献

Reactions of differently substituted phenyl radicals with components of nucleic acids have been investigated in the gas phase. A positively charged group located meta with respect to the radical site was employed to allow manipulation of the radicals in a Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer. All of these electrophilic radicals react with sugars via exclusive hydrogen atom abstraction, with adenine and uracil almost exclusively via addition (likely at the C8 and C5 carbons, respectively), and with the nucleoside thymidine by hydrogen atom abstraction and addition at C5 in the base moiety (followed by elimination of (*)CH(3)). These findings parallel the reactivity of the phenyl radical with components of nucleic acids in solution, except that the selectivity for addition is different. Like HO(*), the electrophilic charged phenyl radicals appear to favor addition to the C5-end of the C5-C6 double bond of thymine and thymidine, whereas the phenyl radical preferentially adds to C6. The charged phenyl radicals do not predominantly add to thymine, as the neutral phenyl radical and HO(*), but mainly react by hydrogen atom abstraction from the methyl group (some addition to C5 in the base followed by loss of (*)CH(3) also occurs). Adenine appears to be the preferred target among the nucleobases, while uracil is the least favored. A systematic increase in the electrophilicity of the radicals by modification of the radicals' structures was found to facilitate all reactions, but the addition even more than hydrogen atom abstraction. Therefore, the least reactive radicals are most selective toward hydrogen atom abstraction, while the most reactive radicals also efficiently add to the base. Traditional enthalpy arguments do not rationalize the rate variations. Instead, the rates reflect the radicals' electron affinities used as a measure for their ability to polarize the transition state of each reaction.  相似文献

Ab initio and density functional theory calculations have been carried out to investigate the reaction of hydroxyl radical (OH) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (CH3CCl3). The potential energy surface has been given according to the relative energies calculated at the MP2/cc-pVTZ level after the spin projection (PMP2). Five reaction channels were identified and the intramolecular hydrogen bonding was observed in some transition state structures. The barrier heights and reaction enthalpies calculated for all possible channels show that the hydrogen abstraction channel is predominant kinetically and thermodynamically. The contribution from other channels was predicted to be minor.  相似文献

Ab initio calculations at the Hartree-Fock, MP2 and MP4 levels were performed to find structures of the equilibrium and transition states and the reaction energies and energies of activation of several competing reaction pathways of O (3P)+CH3SH. A 6-31G* basis set was used in all calculations. The mechanism of hydrogen atom abstraction from the S-H group methanethiol was found to be very competitive with the oxygen atom addition to the sulfur atom.  相似文献

Unexpectedly, the 5-dehydroquinoline radical cation was formed in the gas phase from the 5-iodo-8-nitroquinolinium cation upon ion-trap collision-activated dissociation. This reaction involves the cleavage of a nitro group to generate an intermediate monoradical, namely, the 8-dehydro-5-iodoquinolinium cation, followed by rearrangement through abstraction of a hydrogen atom from the protonated nitrogen atom by the radical site. Dissociation of the rearranged radical cation through elimination of an iodine atom generates the 5-dehydroquinoline radical cation. The mechanism was probed by studying isomeric biradicals and performing quantum chemical calculations. The 5-dehydroquinoline radical cation showed greater gas-phase reactivity toward dimethyl disulfide, cyclohexane, and allyl iodide than the isomeric 5,8-didehydroquinolinium cation, which is more reactive than the isomeric 5,8-didehydroisoquinolinium cation studied previously. All three isomers have a 1,4-biradical topology. The order of reactivity is rationalized by the vertical electron affinities of the radical sites of these biradicals instead of their widely differing singlet–triplet splittings.  相似文献

The barrier heights involved in the abstraction of a hydrogen atom from n‐butanol by the hydroperoxyl radical have been computed with both compound (CBS‐QB3, CBS‐APNO, G3) and coupled cluster methods. In particular, the benchmark computations CCSD(T)/cc‐pVTZ//MP2/6‐311G(d,p) were used to determine that the barrier heights increase in the order α <γ < β < δ < OH. Two prereaction hydrogen‐bonded complexes are formed, one of which connects the TGt conformer of n‐butanol to the α and β transition states and the other connects to the γ and OH channels from the TGg conformer. Four postreaction complexes were also found which link the transition states to the products, hydrogen peroxide + C4H9O radical. Abstraction from the terminal δ carbon atom does not involve either a pre or postreaction complex. A number of DFT functionals—B3LYP, BMK, MPWB1K, BB1K, MPW1K, and M05‐2X—were tested to see whether the correct ranking could be obtained with computationally less expensive methods. Only the later functional predicts the correct order but requires a basis set of 6‐311++G(df,pd) to achieve this. However, the absolute values obtained do not agree that well with the benchmarks; the composite G3 method predicts the correct order and comes closest (≤ 2 kJ, mol ?1) in absolute numerical terms for H‐abstraction from carbon. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Gas-phase reactivity of five differently substituted positively charged phenyl radicals was examined toward six amino acids by using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR). The reactivity of the radicals studied was determined by the electrophilicity of the radical, which can be characterized by the radical's electron affinity (EA). The larger the electron affinity of the radical, the higher the overall reaction rate. In addition to the expected H-atom abstraction, several unprecedented reaction pathways were observed, including NH2 abstraction, SH abstraction, and SCH3 abstraction. These reaction pathways dominate for the most electrophilic radicals, and they may not follow radical but rather nucleophilic addition-elimination mechanisms. Hydrogen abstraction from glycine was also investigated theoretically. The results indicate that hydrogen abstraction from alphaC of glycine is both kinetically and thermodynamically favored over the NH2 group. The ordering of transition state energies for hydrogen abstraction from the alphaC and NH2 groups was found to reflect the radicals' EA ordering.  相似文献

The transition states of competing reactions of abstraction of the H atom from hydrocarbon molecules by tert-butoxyl radical and its -elimination were studied by the semiempirical quantum-chemical AM1 method. The calculated activation enthalpy and entropy of these reactions correlate with the experimental values. A correlation between the reactivity in homolytic hydrogen abstraction and the parameters of the chemical structure of the reactants was found.  相似文献

High-level ab initio electronic structure calculations have been carried out with respect to the intermolecular hydrogen-transfer reaction HCOOH+.OH-->HCOO.+H(2)O and the intramolecular hydrogen-transfer reaction .OOCH2OH-->HOOCH(2)O.. In both cases we found that the hydrogen atom transfer can take place via two different transition structures. The lowest energy transition structure involves a proton transfer coupled to an electron transfer from the ROH species to the radical, whereas the higher energy transition structure corresponds to the conventional radical hydrogen atom abstraction. An analysis of the atomic spin population, computed within the framework of the topological theory of atoms in molecules, suggests that the triplet repulsion between the unpaired electrons located on the oxygen atoms that undergo hydrogen exchange must be much higher in the transition structure for the radical hydrogen abstraction than that for the proton-coupled electron-transfer mechanism. It is suggested that, in the gas phase, hydrogen atom transfer from the OH group to oxygen-centered radicals occurs by the proton-coupled electron-transfer mechanism when this pathway is accessible.  相似文献

The reaction of nitrosodimethylamine, nitrosoazetidine, nitrosopyrrolidine, and nitrosopiperidine with the hydroxyl radical has been studied using electronic structure calculations in gas and aqueous phases. The rate constant was calculated using variational transition state theory. The reactions are initiated by H‐atom abstraction from the αC─H group of nitrosamines and leads to the formation of alkyl radical intermediate. In the subsequent reactions, the initially formed alkyl radical intermediate reacts with O2 forming a peroxy radical. The reaction of peroxy radical with other atmospheric oxidants, such as HO2 and NO radicals, is studied. The structures of the reactive species were optimized by using the density functional theory methods, such as M06‐2X, MPW1K, and BHandHLYP, and hybrid methods G3B3. The single‐point energy calculations were also performed at CCSD(T)/6‐311+G(d,p)// M062X/6‐311+G(d,p) level. The calculated thermodynamical parameters show that the reactions corresponding to the formation of intermediates and products are highly exothermic. We have calculated the rate constant for the initial H‐atom abstraction and subsequent favorable secondary reactions using canonical variational transition state theory over the temperature range of 150–400 K. The calculated rate constant for initial H‐atom abstraction reaction is ∼3 × 10−12 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 and is in agreement with the previous experimental results. The calculated thermochemical data and rate constants show that the reaction profile and kinetics of the reactions are less dependent on the number of methyl groups present in the nitrosoamines. Furthermore, it has been found that the atmospheric lifetime of nitrosamines is around 5 days in the normal atmospheric OH concentration.  相似文献

Polar effects are demonstrated to be a key factor in controlling the reactivities of related charged phenyl radicals in different exothermic atom and group abstraction reactions in the gas phase. The effects of various meta substituents on the phenyl radicals' reactivity were probed via the measurement of bimolecular reaction rate constants by using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. This approach requires an additional, charged substituent to be present in the phenyl radical to allow mass spectrometric manipulation. The m-pyridinium group was chosen for this purpose. The substrates studied were allyl iodide, dimethyl disulfide, and tert-butyl isocyanide. Two of the reactions of interest, *I and *SCH(3) transfer, are thought to occur by concerted bimolecular homolytic substitution (S(H)2), and the third one, *CN transfer, by an addition/elimination mechanism. For all three substrates, the reaction rate was found to increase in the following order for the differently substituted phenyl radicals: CH(3) approximately H < Br approximately Cl approximately COOH < NO(2) approximately CN. This trend does not arise from differences in reaction exothermicities or bond dissociation energies but via lowering the reaction barrier by electronic effects. The stabilization of the transition state is attributed to its increased polar character. A semiquantitative measure of the barrier lowering effect for each substituent is obtained from its influence on the electron affinity of the charged radical, as the calculated (B3LYP/6-31+G(d)) adiabatic electron affinities of the radical model systems (ammonium instead of pyridinium charge site) follow the same trend as the reactivities.  相似文献
