Theoretical investigations of the lateral shifts of the reflected and transmitted beams were performed, using the stationary-phase approach, for the planar interface of a conventional medium and a lossy negative-phase-velocity medium. The lateral shifts exhibit different behaviors beyond and below a certain angle, for both incident p-polarized and incident s-polarized plane waves. Loss in the negative-phase-velocity medium affects lateral shifts greatly, and may cause changes from negative to positive values for p-polarized incidence.  相似文献

The transport properties of the La1-xCaxMnO3 ( 0.5 ? x < 1) system in magnetic fields up to 14 T were studied. We found that the relationship between the charge ordering temperature T CO and Mn4+ content n Mn4 + obeys the formula T CO / T max = 1 - a ( n Mn4 + - n 0 ) 2 , here n0 and a are constants and T max is the maximum of T CO . For x = 0.65, T CO arrives at the maximum value of 249.5 K in zero magnetic field, while the charge ordered (CO) state is most stable around x = 0.75. For x = 0.5 when H < 6 T the resistivity displays Mott's variable-range hopping (VRH) behavior, when 6 < H < 12 T it is suggested that two kinds of conduction mechanism, i.e., VRH and magnetic polarons, coexist in the material, and when H > 12 T the resistivity shows metallic-like behavior and the transport mechanism is attributed to coexistence of magnetic polarons and free carriers. For x = 0.95, the conduction mechanism accords with the coexistence of VRH and magnetic polarons. Received 4 January 2002 and Received in final form 28 January 2002  相似文献

We have calculated the real part of the nonlinear dielectric susceptibility of amorphous insulators in the kHz range, by using the two-level system model and a nonperturbative numerical quantum approach. At low temperature T, it is first shown that the standard two-level model should lead to a decrease of when the measuring field E is raised, since raising E increases the population of the upper level and induces Rabi oscillations cancelling the ones induced from the ground level. This predicted E-induced decrease of is at odds with experiments. However, a better, though still not perfect, agreement with low-frequency experimental nonlinear data is recovered if, in our fully quantum simulations, interactions between defects are taken into account by a new relaxation rate whose efficiency increases as , as was proposed recently by Burin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5616 (2001)]. In this approach, the behavior of at low T is mainly explained by the efficiency of this new relaxation channel. Since a quantitative understanding of glasses is still missing, we finally discuss experiments whose results should yield a refined understanding of this new relaxation mechanism: i) a completely new nonlinear behavior should be found for samples whose thickness is ≃ 10 nm; ii) a decrease of nonequilibrium effects should be found when E is increased. We consider a porous solid covered with a water film (or with a drop) in situations where the liquid is pumped in, either spontaneously (if the porous medium is hydrophilic) or mechanically (by an external pump). The dynamics of dewetting is then strongly modified. We analyse a few major examples, a) horizontal films, which break at a certain critical thickness, b) the “modified Landau-Levich problem” where a porous plate moves up from a bath and carries a film: aspiration towards the plate limits the height H reached by the film, c) certain situation where the hysteresis of contact angles is important. In this article, we propose a new method to compute the effective properties of non-linear disordered media. We use the fact that the effective constants can be defined through the minimum of an energy functional. We express this minimum in terms of a path integral allowing us to use many-body techniques. We obtain the perturbation expansion of the effective constants to second order in disorder, for any kind of non-linearity. We apply our method to the case of strong non-linearities (i.e. , where is fluctuating from point to point), and to the case of weak non-linearity (i.e. where and fluctuate from point to point). Our results are in agreement with previous ones, and could be easily extended to other types of non-linear problems in disordered systems. Received: 13 May 1998 / Accepted: 27 July 1998  相似文献

The onset of surface fluidization of granular material in a vertically vibrated container, z = A cosωt , is studied experimentally. Recently, for a column of spheres it has been theoretically found (see T. P?schel, T. Schwager, C. Salue na, Phys. Rev. E 62, 1361 (2000)) that the particles lose contact if a certain condition for the acceleration amplitude ≡Aω2/g = f (ω) holds. This result is in disagreement with other findings where the criterion = = const was found to be the criterion of fluidization. We show that for a column of spheres a critical acceleration is not a proper criterion for fluidization and compare the results with theory. The present paper develops a Statistical Mechanics approach to the inherent states of glassy systems and granular materials by following the original ideas proposed by Edwards for granular media. We consider three lattice models (a diluted spin glass, a system of hard spheres under gravity and a hard-spheres binary mixture under gravity) introduced to describe glassy and granular systems. They are evolved using a “tap dynamics” analogous to that of experiments on granular media. We show that the asymptotic states reached in such a dynamics are not dependent on the particular sample history and are characterized by a few thermodynamical parameters. We assume that under stationarity these systems are distributed in their inherent states satisfying the principle of maximum entropy. This leads to a generalized Gibbs distribution characterized by new “thermodynamical” parameters, called “configurational temperatures” (related to Edwards compactivity for granular materials). Finally, we show by Monte Carlo calculations that the average of macroscopic quantities over the tap dynamics and over such distribution indeed coincide. In particular, in the diluted spin glass and in the system of hard spheres under gravity, the asymptotic states reached by the system are found to be described by a single “configurational temperature”. Whereas in the hard-spheres binary mixture under gravity the asymptotic states reached by the system are found to be described by two thermodynamic parameters, coinciding with the two configurational temperatures which characterize the distribution among the inherent states when the principle of maximum entropy is satisfied under the constraint that the energies of the two species are independently fixed. The compaction of granular packings or soils is a collective process which for higher densities becomes increasingly slower reaching glassy behaviour. We present a study of this problem from various points of view, in particular we will represent the evolving force network that percolates through the system by an inverse fiber rupture model. Starting from the phenomenological model for sand ripple formation developed in [#!Bouchaud98!#], we proposed a new interpretation in the light of recent experiments. Furthermore, we derive, close to the threshold of ripple instability, a nonlinear equation for the spatio-temporal evolution of the sand bed profile, which to leading order has a quadratic nonlinearity. This equation is identical to that derived recently on the basis of geometry and conservation law [#!Csahok98!#]. Our derivation connects the coefficients of the nonlinear equation to the underlying physical mechanisms (reptation length...). This equation reveals ripple structures which then undergo a coarsening process, as observed in wind tunnel experiment. Small, fast moving ripples are absorbed by larger, slower forms resulting in a growth of the mean wavelength. Received 5 January 1999  相似文献

A model for ripple instabilities in granular media   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We extend the model of surface granular flow proposed in [#!bcre!#] to account for the effect of an external `wind', which acts as to dislodge particles from the static bed, such that a stationary state of flowing grains is reached. We discuss in detail how this mechanism can be described in a phenomenological way, and show that a flat bed is linearly unstable against ripple formation in a certain region of parameter space. We focus in particular on the (realistic) case where the migration velocity of the instability is much smaller than the grains' velocity. In this limit, the full dispersion relation can be established. We relate the critical wave vector to the mean hopping length and to the ratio of the flight time to the `stick' time. We provide an intuitive interpretation of the instability. Received: 30 January 1998 / Revised: 12 May 1998 / Accepted: 8 June 1998  相似文献

We describe a cryptographic protocol consisting of two entangled beams of squeezed light which makes use of statistical tests to deduce the secret key bit. The sender (Alice) encrypts a secret key by modulating the phase of the beam sent in public by the receiver (Bob) who keeps the other beam private. The knowledge of the degree of non classical correlation between the beam quadrature components measured in private and in public allows only Bob to decrypt the secret key. With a view towards absolute security, we formally prove that any external intervention from an eavesdropper (Eve) during the communication process introduces necessarily some modification susceptible to be detected. Statistical confidentiality tests are proposed to detect the presence of Eve. Received 12 July 2001 and Received in final form 11 November 2001  相似文献

A general theory based on the spectral representation method and effective medium approximation is adopted to investigate the optical bistable behavior in a nonlinear two-phase composite with symmetrical microstructure, in which the metal particles of the volume fraction p and the dielectric particles of the volume fraction 1−p are randomly dispersed but oriented with respect to one another. The relation between the spatial average of local field squared and the external applied field is established through the spectral density function m(x), obtained from the modified Bruggeman effective medium approximation. We find that the optical bistability (OB) is dependent on the depolarization factor L of the components and the volume fraction p. For a given p, we predict that OB can be observed only when L is larger than the critical value Lc, and bistable behavior is more pronounced at large L. Moreover, numerical results show that both the upper threshold field and the width of OB region increase monotonically as L increases. The field-dependent reflectance at normal incidence R in random composites is also investigated.  相似文献

Tracer dispersion in Newtonian and shear-thinning fluids (scleroglucan-water polymer solutions) flowing through single and double porosity grain packings has been studied experimentally using both classical transmission dispersion and echo dispersion (in the latter, the concentration variation front is pumped back through a detector at the inlet after penetrating for a chosen distance into the sample). Transmission dispersion increases markedly in both types of samples with the shear thinning index of the fluid at all Péclet numbers (except when molecular diffusion is dominant). Echo and transmission experiments give nearly identical dispersivity values for Newtonian fluids while echo dispersivity is lower than transmission for shear thinning ones. The normalized dispersivity difference has same order of magnitude for single and double porosity samples and increases with the shear thinning exponent α (by a factor of 2 between α = 0.35 and α = 0.60). This difference may be due to heterogeneities inducing permeability variations of small amplitude over distances of the order of the sample section : their influence on tracer dispersion is partly reversible with respect to a change of the flow direction and is only detectable if it is amplified by the shear-thinning properties of the fluid. A two-dimensional axisymmetric model of the propagation of intense femtosecond laser pulses through dispersion-free transparent media is described. The effects of diffraction, nonlinear Kerr effect (instantaneous and retarded) and multiphoton ionisation are included. Numerical results concerning air and other gases are discussed. In particular, time self-compression of femtosecond pulses is predicted. Stable self-guided pulses are simulated, in agreement with recent experimental observations. We report on analytical calculations for a 4f coherent imaging system in presence of a phase object at the entry of the set-up. We give the results of the optimized parameters to be used in this system so as to increase the sensitivity of the measurement of the nonlinear refraction coefficient. Analytical and previously reported simulated image profiles are compared here. Our study also gives the limits of the nonlinear imaging technique with a phase object for relatively high nonlinear phase shifts.  相似文献

The flow birefringence and the rheological properties of four viscoelastic solutions having nearly the same zero shear viscosity and subjected to shear flows are investigated in the linear and non-linear domains. The surfactant used for the samples is the cetyltrimethylammonium chloride in water at the concentration of 100 mmol/l with an organic salt, the sodium salicylate. The low shear viscosity curve versus the salt concentration is non-monotonic and has two maxima separated by a minimum forming four domains in which the salt concentration is chosen. For the two solutions belonging to the inner branch, i.e. between the two maxima, a simple Maxwellian behaviour is observed and shear banding occurs as confirmed by the flow birefringence pictures. Contrary to the results of P. Fisher (1996) where the unstable flow regime is restricted to the first decreasing part of the low shear viscosity curve of a cetylpyridinium chloride solution, we show that shear banding exits in a wider domain of the salt concentration. The field-induced carrier redistribution between the subbands of a semiconductor superlattice is treated using the density matrix approach. The unit cell of the superlattice consists of one quantum well with three occupied subbands. Carrier scattering on polar-optical phonons is described within the microscopic bulk phonon model. At the tunneling resonance, an intrinsic population inversion is observed. The temperature dependence of the population inversion is determined. The aim of the paper is to study the deviation of magnetic properties of the magnetic fluids prepared for this study, from ideal (Langevin) behaviour, i.e. to estimate particle interaction influence and dimensions and influence of particle aggregates, as well as to explain the related effects observed. We also determine the particle coupling parameter, the particle nonmagnetic layer thickness, and the particle distribution, which are fundamental for sample characterization. A comparison of the studied magnetic fluids with each other, with respect to microstructure formation and particle interaction strength is finally done. For these purposes, a concentration dependence study, following the proposed “dilution series approach”, is performed. Three series of dilutions of three types of magnetic fluids were prepared and analyzed. Received 27 August 2001  相似文献

We propose a new technique to perform measurements of nonlinearities in optical waveguides based on the variation of an optical pulse chirp. This technique is analogous to the z-scan technique in the time domain. We analyze the new experimental method analytically and numerically, obtaining an useful expression relating the nonlinearity with a peak-valley structure. Practical ways to implement the technique are discussed. Received 13 March 2001  相似文献
