A new characteristic-based method for the solution of the 2D laminar incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. For coupling the continuity and momentum equations, the artificial compressibility formulation is employed. The primitives variables (pressure and velocity components) are defined as functions of their values on the characteristics. The primitives variables on the characteristics are calculated by an upwind diffencing scheme based on the sign of the local eigenvalue of the Jacobian matrix of the convective fluxes. The upwind scheme uses interpolation formulae of third-order accuracy. The time discretization is obtained by the explicit Runge–Kutta method. Validation of the characteristic-based method is performed on two different cases: the flow in a simple cascade and the flow over a backwardfacing step.  相似文献

The streamfunction-vorticity equations for incompressible two-dimensional flows are uncoupled and solved in sequence by the finite element method. The vorticity at no-slip boundaries is evaluated in the framework of the streamfunction equation. The resulting scheme achieves convergence, even for very high values of the Reynolds number, without the traditional need for upwinding. The stability and accuracy of the approach are demonstrated by the solution of two well-known benchmark problems: flow in a lid-driven cavity at Re ? 10,000 and flow over a backward-facing step at Re = 800.  相似文献

The problem of establishing appropriate conditions for the vorticity transport equation is considered. It is shown that, in viscous incompressible flows, the boundary conditions on the velocity imply conditions of an integral type on the vorticity. These conditions determine a projection of the vorticity field on the linear manifold of the harmonic vector fields. Some computational consequences of the above result in two-dimensional calculations by means of the nonprimitive variables, stream function and vorticity, are examined. As an example of the application of the discrete analogue of the projection conditions, numerical solutions of the driven cavity problem are reported.  相似文献

A pseudo-spectral solver with multigrid acceleration for the numerical prediction of incompressible non-isothermal flows is presented. The spatial discretization is based on a Chebyshev collocation method on Gauss–Lobatto points and for the discretization in time the second-order backward differencing scheme (BDF2) is employed. The multigrid method is invoked at the level of algebraic system solving within a pressure-correction method. The approach combines the high accuracy of spectral methods with efficient solver properties of multigrid methods. The capabilities of the proposed scheme are illustrated by a buoyancy driven cavity flow as a standard benchmark case. To cite this article: K. Krastev, M. Schäfer, C. R. A time-accurate solution method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized moving coordinates is presented. A finite volume discretization method that satisfies the geometric conservation laws for time-varying computational cells is used. The discrete equations are solved by a fractional step solution procedure. The solution is second-order-accurate in space and first-order-accurate in time. The pressure and the volume fluxes are chosen as the unknowns to facilitate the formulation of a consistent Poisson equation and thus to obtain a robust Poisson solver with favourable convergence properties. The method is validated by comparing the solutions with other numerical and experimental results. Good agreement is obtained in all cases.  相似文献

This paper describes a three-step finite element method and its applications to unsteady incompressible fluid flows. Stability analysis of the one-dimensional pure convection equation shows that this method has third-order accuracy and an extended numerical stability domain in comparison with the Lax--Wendroff finite element method. The method is cost-effective for incompressible flows because it permits less frequent updates of the pressure field with good accuracy. In contrast with the Taylor-Galerkin method, the present method does not contain any new higher-order derivatives, which makes it suitable for solving non-linear multidimensional problems and flows with complicated boundary conditions. The three-step finite element method has been used to simulate unsteady incompressible flows. The numerical results obtained are in good agreement with those in the literature.  相似文献

The time-dependent Navier–Stokes equations and the energy balance equation for an incompressible, constant property fluid in the Boussinesq approximation are solved by a least-squares finite element method based on a velocity–pressure–vorticity–temperature–heat-flux ( u –P–ω–T– q ) formulation discretized by backward finite differencing in time. The discretization scheme leads to the minimization of the residual in the l2-norm for each time step. Isoparametric bilinear quadrilateral elements and reduced integration are employed. Three examples, thermally driven cavity flow at Rayleigh numbers up to 106, lid-driven cavity flow at Reynolds numbers up to 104 and flow over a square obstacle at Reynolds number 200, are presented to validate the method.  相似文献

New concepts for the study of incompressible plane or axisymmetric flows are analysed by the stream tube method. Flows without eddies and pure vortex flows are considered in a transformed domain where the mapped streamlines are rectilinear or circular. The transformation between the physical domain and the computational domain is an unknown of the problem. In order to solve the non-linear set of relevant equations, we present a new algorithm based on a trust region technique which is effective for non-convex optimization problems. Experimental results show that the new algorithm is more robust compared to the Newton-Raphson method.  相似文献

A global method of generalized differential quadrature is applied to solve the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the vorticity-stream-function formulation. Numerical results for the flow past a circular cylinder were obtained using just a few grid points. A good agreement is found with the experimental data.  相似文献

For optimal control problems related to fluid flow the choice of an adequate cost functional for suppression of vortices is of significant importance. In this research we propose a cost functional based on a local dynamical systems characterization of vortices. The resulting functional is a non‐convex function of the velocity gradient tensor. The resulting optimality system describing first order necessary optimality conditions is derived, a possible strategy for numerical realization of the optimal control problem is provided and a numerical feasibility study is conducted. Within multivariant elements, which have restricted degrees of freedom at some nodes, different velocity components have different variations. Shape functions for the multivariant elements Q Po and R Po are developed. With such shape functions the value of a velocity component within a multivariant element is shown to depend upon all the independent components of velocity at the nodes of the element. The use of the Q1 P0 element to simulate flows with discontinuous boundary conditions generated disturbance throughout the flow domain, giving erroneous pressure and velocity distributions. The Q Po element restricted the disturbance due to such discontinuities to a small region near the singular points, whereas the P Po element completely eliminated the fluctuations. Flows with discontinuous boundary conditions were simulated with reasonable accuracy by partially relaxing the no-slip condition on the Q1 Po elements near the singular points.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the unsteady motion of inhomogeneous incompressible viscous fluids. We present the results corresponding to Stokes' second problem and for the flow between two parallel plates where one is oscillating.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to present and to validate a new hybrid coupling (HC) algorithm for modeling of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) in incompressible, viscous flows. The HC algorithm is able to avoid numerical instability issues associated with artificial added mass effects, which are often encountered by standard loosely coupled (LC) and tightly coupled (TC) algorithms, when modeling the FSI response of flexible structures in incompressible flow. The artificial added mass effect is caused by the lag in exchange of interfacial displacements and forces between the fluid and solid solvers in partitioned algorithms. The artificial added mass effect is much more prominent for light/flexible structures moving in water, because the fluid forces are in the same order of magnitude as the solid forces, and because the speed at which numerical errors propagate in an incompressible fluid. The new HC algorithm avoids numerical instability issues associated with artificial added mass effects by embedding Theodorsen’s analytical approximation of the hydroelastic forces in the solution process to obtain better initial estimates of the displacements. Details of the new HC algorithm are presented. Numerical validation studies are shown for the forced pitching response of a steel and a plastic hydrofoil. The results show that the HC algorithm is able to converge faster, and is able to avoid numerical instability issues, compared to standard LC and TC algorithms, when modeling the transient FSI response of a plastic hydrofoil. Although the HC algorithm is only demonstrated for a NACA0009 hydrofoil subject to pure pitching motion, the method can be easily extended to model general 3-D FSI response and stability of complex, flexible structures in turbulent, incompressible, multiphase flows.  相似文献

This paper discusses the calculation of quasi-three-dimensional incompressible viscous flow by FEM. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved in curvilinear co-ordinates by the reduced integration and penalty method (RIP). Streamline upwind artificial viscosity (SUAV) and the Baldwin-Lomax algebraic model of turbulence are used. Time discretization is by the general implicit θ-method.  相似文献

Flows of fluids with single-integral memory functionals are considered. Evaluation of the stress at a material point involves the deformation history of that point, and a dominant computational cost in finite element approximation is the construction of streamlines. It is shown that the simple crossed-triangle macro-element is in many ways an ideal finite element for the difficult non-linear, non-self-adjoint problem. The question as to whether this element produces convergent velocity and pressure solutions is addressed in the light of its failure to satisfy the discrete LBB condition. The effect of the element's ill-disposed (‘spurious’) pressure modes is discussed, and a pressure smoothing scheme is given which gives good results in Newtonian and non-Newtonian flows at various Reynolds and Deborah numbers. As an example of the element's success in modelling such flows, the problem of pressure differences in flows over transverse slots is studied numerically. The results are compared with experimental observations of such flows. The effect of fluid memory on the relation between first normal-stress differences and pressure differences is investigated.  相似文献

We introduce a time stepping technique using the momentum as dependent variable to solve incompressible multiphase problems. The main advantage of this approach is that the mass matrix is time‐independent making this technique suitable for spectral methods. A level set method is applied to reconstruct the fluid properties such as density. We also introduce a stabilization method using an entropy‐viscosity technique and a compression technique to limit the flattening of the level set function. We extend our algorithm to immiscible conducting fluids by coupling the incompressible Navier‐Stokes and the Maxwell equations. We validate the proposed algorithm against analytical and manufactured solutions. Results on test cases such as Newton's bucket problem and a variation thereof are provided. Surface tension effects are tested on benchmark problems involving bubbles. A numerical simulation of a phenomenon related to the industrial production of aluminium is presented at the end of the paper.  相似文献

A grid-embedding technique for the solution of two-dimensional incompressible flows governed by the Navier-Stokes equations is presented. A finite volume method with collocated primitive variables is employed to ensure conservation at the interfaces of embedding grids as well as global conservation. The discretized equations are solved simultaneously for the whole domain, providing a strong coupling between regions of different refinement. The formulation presented herein is applicable to uniform or non-uniform Cartesian meshes. The method was applied to the solution of two scalar transport equations, to cavity flows driven by body and shear forces and to a sudden plane contraction flow. The numerical predictions are compared with the exact solutions when available and with experimental data. The results show that neither the convergence rate nor the stability of the method is affected by the presence of embedded grids. Embedded grids provide a better distribution of grid nodes over the computational domain and consequently the solution accuracy was improved. The grid-embedding technique proved also that significant savings in computing time could be achieved.  相似文献

The paper's focus is the calculation of unsteady incompressible 2D flows past airfoils. In the framework of the primitive variable Navier–Stokes equations, the initial and boundary conditions must be assigned so as to be compatible, to assure the correct prediction of the flow evolution. This requirement, typical of all incompressible flows, viscous or inviscid, is often violated when modelling the flow past immersed bodies impulsively started from rest. Its fulfillment can however be restored by means of a procedure enforcing compatibility, consisting in a pre‐processing of the initial velocity field, here described in detail. Numerical solutions for an impulsively started multiple airfoil have been obtained using a finite element incremental projection method. The spatial discretization chosen for the velocity and pressure are of different order to satisfy the inf–sup condition and obtain a smooth pressure field. Results are provided to illustrate the effect of employing or not the compatibility procedure, and are found in good agreement with those obtained with a non‐primitive variable solver. In addition, we introduce a post‐processing procedure to evaluate an alternative pressure field which is found to be more accurate than the one resulting from the projection method. This is achieved by considering an appropriate ‘unsplit’ version of the momentum equation, where the velocity solution of the projection method is substituted. Design for structural integrity requires an appreciation of where stress singularities can occur in structural configurations. While there is a rich literature devoted to the identification of such singular behavior in solid mechanics, to date there has been relatively little explicit identification of stress singularities caused by fluid flows. In this study, stress and pressure singularities induced by steady flows of viscous incompressible fluids are asymptotically identified. This is done by taking advantage of an earlier result that the Navier-Stokes equations are locally governed by Stokes flow in angular corners. Findings for power singularities are confirmed by developing and using an analogy with solid mechanics. This analogy also facilitates the identification of flow-induced log singularities. Both types of singularity are further confirmed for two global configurations by applying convergence-divergence checks to numerical results. Even though these flow-induced stress singularities are analogous to singularities in solid mechanics, they nonetheless render a number of structural configurations singular that were not previously appreciated as such from identifications within solid mechanics alone.  相似文献
