A number of new local and parallel discretization and adaptive finite element algorithms are proposed and analyzed in this paper for elliptic boundary value problems. These algorithms are motivated by the observation that, for a solution to some elliptic problems, low frequency components can be approximated well by a relatively coarse grid and high frequency components can be computed on a fine grid by some local and parallel procedure. The theoretical tools for analyzing these methods are some local a priori and a posteriori estimates that are also obtained in this paper for finite element solutions on general shape-regular grids. Some numerical experiments are also presented to support the theory.

Abstract Some new local and parallel finite element algorithms are proposed and analyzed in this paper foreigenvalue problems. With these algorithms, the solution of an eigenvalue problem on a fine grid is reduced tothe solution of an eigenvalue problem on a relatively coarse grid together with solutions of some linear algebraicsystems on fine grid by using some local and parallel procedure.A theoretical tool for analyzing these algorithmsis some local error estimate that is also obtained in this paper for finite element approximations of eigenvectorson general shape-regular grids.

In this paper, some local and parallel discretizations and adaptive finite element algorithms are proposed and analyzed for nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems in both two and three dimensions. The main technique is to use a standard finite element discretization on a coarse grid to approximate low frequencies and then to apply some linearized discretization on a fine grid to correct the resulted residual (which contains mostly high frequencies) by some local/parallel procedures. The theoretical tools for analyzing these methods are some local a priori and a posteriori error estimates for finite element solutions on general shape-regular grids that are also obtained in this paper.

Based on two-grid discretizations, some local and parallel finite element algorithms for the d-dimensional (d = 2,3) transient Stokes equations are proposed and analyzed. Both semi- and fully discrete schemes are considered. With backward Euler scheme for the temporal discretization, the basic idea of the fully discrete finite element algorithms is to approximate the generalized Stokes equations using a coarse grid on the entire domain, then correct the resulted residue using a finer grid on overlapped subdomains by some local and parallel procedures at each time step. By the technical tool of local a priori estimate for the fully discrete finite element solution, errors of the corresponding solutions from these algorithms are estimated. Some numerical results are also given which show that the algorithms are highly efficient.

In this paper, based on a two-grid method and a recent local and parallel finite element method, a parallel two-grid linearized method for the coupled Navier-Stokes-Darcy problem is proposed and analyzed. This method ensures that all the local subproblems on the fine grid can be solved in parallel. Optimal error bounds of the approximate solution are obtained. Finally, numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper presents and studies three two-grid stabilized quadratic equal-order finite element algorithms based on two local Gauss integrations for the steady Navier–Stokes equations with damping. In these algorithms, we first solve a stabilized nonlinear problem on a coarse grid, and then pass the coarse grid solution to a fine grid and solve a stabilized linear problem. Using some nonlinear analysis techniques, we analyze stability of the algorithms and derive optimal order error estimates of the approximate solutions. Theoretical and numerical results show that, when the algorithmic parameters are chosen appropriately, the accuracy of the approximate solutions computed by our two-grid stabilized algorithms is comparable to that of solving a fully stabilized nonlinear problem on the same fine grid; however, our two-grid algorithms save a large amount of CPU time than the one-grid stabilized algorithm.

This article presents a local and parallel finite element method for the stationary incompressible magnetohydrodynamics problem. The key idea of this algorithm comes from the two‐grid discretization technique. Specifically, we solve the nonlinear system on a global coarse mesh, and then solve a series of linear problems on several subdomains in parallel. Furthermore, local a priori estimates are obtained on a general shape regular grid. The efficiency of the algorithm is also illustrated by some numerical experiments.© 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary We describe sequential and parallel algorithms based on the Schwarz alternating method for the solution of mixed finite element discretizations of elliptic problems using the Raviart-Thomas finite element spaces. These lead to symmetric indefinite linear systems and the algorithms have some similarities with the traditional block Gauss-Seidel or block Jacobi methods with overlapping blocks. The indefiniteness requires special treatment. The sub-blocks used in the algorithm correspond to problems on a coarse grid and some overlapping subdomains and is based on a similar partition used in an algorithm of Dryja and Widlund for standard elliptic problems. If there is sufficient overlap between the subdomains, the algorithm converges with a rate independent of the mesh size, the number of subdomains and discontinuities of the coefficients. Extensions of the above algorithms to the case of local grid refinement is also described. Convergence theory for these algorithms will be presented in a subsequent paper. This work was supported in part by the National Science Foundation under Grant NSF-CCR-8903003, while the author was a graduate student at New York University, and in part by the Army Research Office under Grant DAAL 03-91-G-0150, while the author was a Visiting Assistant Researcher at UCLA

In this paper, we employ local Fourier analysis (LFA) to analyze the convergence properties of multigrid methods for higher‐order finite‐element approximations to the Laplacian problem. We find that the classical LFA smoothing factor, where the coarse‐grid correction is assumed to be an ideal operator that annihilates the low‐frequency error components and leaves the high‐frequency components unchanged, fails to accurately predict the observed multigrid performance and, consequently, cannot be a reliable analysis tool to give good performance estimates of the two‐grid convergence factor. While two‐grid LFA still offers a reliable prediction, it leads to more complex symbols that are cumbersome to use to optimize parameters of the relaxation scheme, as is often needed for complex problems. For the purposes of this analytical optimization as well as to have simple predictive analysis, we propose a modification that is “between” two‐grid LFA and smoothing analysis, which yields reasonable predictions to help choose correct damping parameters for relaxation. This exploration may help us better understand multigrid performance for higher‐order finite element discretizations, including for Q2Q1 (Taylor‐Hood) elements for the Stokes equations. Finally, we present two‐grid and multigrid experiments, where the corrected parameter choice is shown to yield significant improvements in the resulting two‐grid and multigrid convergence factors.

In this paper, we establish a new local and parallel finite element discrete scheme based on the shifted‐inverse power method for solving the biharmonic eigenvalue problem of plate vibration. We prove the local error estimation of finite element solution for the biharmonic equation/eigenvalue problem and prove the error estimation of approximate solution obtained by the local and parallel scheme. When the diameters of three grids satisfy H4 = ?(w2) = ?(h), the approximate solutions obtained by our schemes can achieve the asymptotically optimal accuracy. The numerical experiments show that the computational schemes proposed in this paper are effective to solve the biharmonic eigenvalue problem of plate vibration.

In this paper, we focus on a local superconvergence analysis of the finite element method for the Stokes equations by local projections. The local and global superconvergence results of finite element solutions are provided for the Stokes problem under some corresponding regularity assumptions. Conclusion can be drawn that the local superconvergence has advantages over the global superconvergence in two important aspects. On the one hand, it offsets theoretical limitation in practical applications. On the other hand, interior estimates are derived on the base of local properties of the domain without global smoothness for the exact solution and prior regularity of the problem globally over the whole domain.

Codes for the numerical solution of two-point boundary value problems can now handle quite general problems in a fairly routine and reliable manner. When faced with particularly challenging equations, such as singular perturbation problems, the most efficient codes use a highly non-uniform grid in order to resolve the non-smooth parts of the solution trajectory. This grid is usually constructed using either a pointwise local error estimate defined at the grid points or else by using a local residual control. Similar error estimates are used to decide whether or not to accept a solution. Such an approach is very effective in general providing that the problem to be solved is well conditioned. However, if the problem is ill conditioned then such grid refinement algorithms may be inefficient because many iterations may be required to reach a suitable mesh on which to compute the solution. Even worse, for ill conditioned problems an inaccurate solution may be accepted even though the local error estimates may be perfectly satisfactory in that they are less than a prescribed tolerance. The primary reason for this is, of course, that for ill conditioned problems a small local error at each grid point may not produce a correspondingly small global error in the solution. In view of this it could be argued that, when solving a two-point boundary value problem in cases where we have no idea of its conditioning, we should provide an estimate of the condition number of the problem as well as the numerical solution. In this paper we consider some algorithms for estimating the condition number of boundary value problems and show how this estimate can be used in the grid refinement algorithm.

In this paper, we are concerned with the development of parallel algorithms for solving some classes of nonconvex optimization problems. We present an introductory survey of parallel algorithms that have been used to solve structured problems (partially separable, and large-scale block structured problems), and algorithms based on parallel local searches for solving general nonconvex problems. Indefinite quadratic programming posynomial optimization, and the general global concave minimization problem can be solved using these approaches. In addition, for the minimum concave cost network flow problem, we are going to present new parallel search algorithms for large-scale problems. Computational results of an efficient implementation on a multi-transputer system will be presented.

In this article, on the basis of two-level discretizations and multiscale finite element method, two kinds of finite element algorithms for steady Navier-Stokes problem are presented and discussed. The main technique is first to use a standard finite element discretization on a coarse mesh to approximate low frequencies, then to apply the simple and Newton scheme to linearize discretizations on a fine grid. At this process, multiscale finite element method as a stabilized method deals with the lowest equal-order finite element pairs not satisfying the inf-sup condition. Under the uniqueness condition, error analyses for both algorithms are given. Numerical results are reported to demonstrate the effectiveness of the simple and Newton scheme.
