We derive expressions for the intensity of the Brillouin polarized spectrum of a molecular liquid formed of axially symmetric molecules. These expressions take into account both the molecular dielectric anisotropy and the modulation of the local polarisability by density fluctuations. They also incorporate all the retardation effects which occur in such liquids. We show that the spectrum splits into a q-independent rotational contribution and q-dependent term, which reflects the propagation of longitudinal acoustic modes. In the latter, the two light scattering mechanisms enter on an equal footing and generate three scattering channels. We study the influence of the two new channels and show that they may substantially modify the Brillouin line-shape when the relaxation time of the supercooled liquid and the period of the acoustic excitation are of the same order of magnitude. We describe the pump-probe spectroscopy of atoms cooled in a 3D linlin optical lattice. Our pump-probe configuration consists of two laser fields detuned with respect to the lattice fields. This scheme allows to clearly identify in the probe transmission spectrum the Brillouin and Raman resonances, by studying their positions as functions of the angle between the pump and probe beams. We describe these resonances in detail, and compare the experimental results to the theoretical predictions. Our conclusions are supported by transport-spectroscopy measurements, which allow to distinguish between contributions to the light scattering from propagating and non-propagating atoms. We study by small-angle neutron scattering the vesicle-to-micelle transition induced by anchoring diblock copolymers on the surfactant membranes. Vesicles are made using the ternary system SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate)/octanol/PS-POE (polystyrene-polyoxyethylene), chosen as a model of more complex biological systems. The anchored polymer chains destabilize the membranes and lead to the formation of mixed polymer-surfactant micelles. We show that there is no influence of the polymer mass on the membranes destabilization. We compare this experimental result with recent theoretical predictions concerning the polymer-grafted membranes. We have a good agreement with predictions involving membrane curvature effects, and also with predictions focusing on more local deformations of membranes created by the grafted chains. We compare within an unifying formalism the dynamical properties of modulated and composite aperiodic (incommensurate) crystals. We discuss the concept of inner polarization and we define an inner polarization parameter β that distinguishes between different acoustic modes of aperiodic crystals. Although this concept has its limitations, we show that it can be used to extract valuable information from neutron coherent inelastic scattering experiments. Within certain conditions, the ratio between the dynamic and the static structure factors at various Bragg peaks depends only on β. We show how the knowledge of β for modes of an unknown structure can be used to decide whether the structure is composite or modulated. The same information can be used to predict scattered intensity within unexplored regions of the reciprocal space, being thus a guide for experiments. We present experimental evidence that the free-electron laser at the TESLA Test Facility has reached the maximum power gain of 107 in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region at wavelengths between 80 and 120 nm. At saturation the FEL emits short pulses with GW peak power and a high degree of transverse coherence. The radiation pulse length can be adjusted between 30 fs and 100 fs. Radiation spectra and fluctuation properties agree with the theory of high gain, single-pass free-electron lasers starting from shot noise. We calculate height-height correlation functions, near-surface density-density correlation functions and the corresponding frequency integrated spectra for a heat conducting viscous fluid. We calculate scattering cross-sections for the static and dynamic X-ray scattering experiments recently developed to investigate the nanometer-scale structure and fluctuations of liquid interfaces. We show that the density-density correlations make an important contribution to the scattering, even using evanescent waves, and that they are strongly affected by the surface. We also discuss the implications for X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and X-ray inelastic scattering. Received 12 October 2001 Published online 6 June 2002  相似文献

The influence of thermalized non-coherent carriers on the dielectric function of GaAs/AlAs quantum wells is investigated by reflection spectroscopy. Experiments are performed using the method of spectral interferometry, where both amplitude and phase of reflected pulses can be determined. For low excitation density the complex coefficient of reflection can be described using as dielectric function a broadened Elliot formula. With increasing carrier density pronounced nonlinearities appear in both amplitude and phase due to many-body effects between excited carriers. The nonlinear behavior fits very well to the results of a many-body theory based on the Semiconductor Bloch equations including memory effects in the scattering processes between carriers and the polarization induced by the probe pulse. Ultracold neutrons (UCN) are lost from traps if they are quasi-elastically scattered from the wall with an energy gain sufficient to exceed the Fermi potential for the wall. Possible mechanisms of a quasi-elastic energy transfer are, for instance, scattering from hydrogen diffusing in an impurity surface layer or on surface waves at a liquid wall. Using two different experimental methods at the UCN source of the Institut Laue-Langevin we have investigated both the energy-gain and the energy-loss side of quasi-elastic UCN scattering on Fomblin grease coated walls. For Fomblin oil and similar new types of oil we report up-scattering data as a function of temperature and energy transfer. These low-temperature oils may be used in an improved measurement of the neutron lifetime, which requires extremely low wall reflection losses. We have performed a first-principles study of structural, dynamical, and dielectric properties of the chalcopyrite semiconductor CuInS2. The calculations have been carried out within the local density functional approximation using norm-conserving pseudopotentials and a plane-wave basis. Born effective charge tensors, dielectric permitivity tensors, the phonon frequencies at the Brillouin zone center and mode oscillator strengths are calculated using density functional perturbation theory. The calculated properties agree with infrared and Raman measurements. The scattering matrix for multi-component systems is recalculated using the extended form of the Sherman-Morisson formula. The matrix elements are given explicitly in closed form. The Gibbs-Duhem relation separates the density and composition contributions. Received 5 April 2002  相似文献

We present a new parameterization of the trinucleon wave function. As a novel feature a separable parameterization for the complete wave function is given. In this way any calculation that considers two-body currents only is largely simplified. To demonstrate this we calculate the π3He scattering length in chiral-perturbation theory. We find reasonable agreement with experimental values inferred from data on level shifts in pionic 3He bound states. The relevance of the π-triton system for an alternative determination of the πN scattering lengths is discussed. We study the decoherence of atomic interferometers due to the scattering of stochastic gravitational waves. We evaluate the “direct” gravitational effect registered by the phase of the matter waves as well as the “indirect” effect registered by the light waves used as beam-splitters and mirrors for the matter waves. Considering as an example the space project HYPER, we show that both effects are negligible for the presently studied interferometers. The magnetic excitations in the antiferromagnetic phase of HoNi2B2C are studied by inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals for the first time. Spectra measured at constant T = 2 K along symmetry directions of the reciprocal space are well explained in terms of crystal electric field (CEF) magnetic excitons within the J = 8 ground state multiplet of Ho3+. Very modest bandwidth with planar energy dispersion describes the magnetic exciton dynamics. A perturbative model approach consisting of the CEF states in the effective exchange mean-field provides a simple but applicable characterization of the experimental observations. The microscopic determination of the relevant exchange parameters is discussed in connection with previous works on the subject. We detect in a tri-block co-polymer micellar system an ergodic-to-nonergodic-to-ergodic transition, as a function of temperature, in a range of concentrations, by photon correlation measurements. The shear viscosity is also shown to jump two order of magnitude at these transition temperatures. Surprisingly, the structure factor as measured by small angle neutron scattering shows a marked narrowing at the structural arrest state. Rationalization of these results with the existence of an attractive branch in the phase diagram of an attractive colloid system predicted by mode coupling theory is made. We present in detail a dispersion relation formalism for virtual Compton scattering (VCS) off the proton from threshold into the Δ(1232)-resonance region. Such a formalism can be used as a tool to extract the generalized polarizabilities of the proton from both unpolarized and polarized VCS observables over a larger energy range. We present calculations for existing and forthcoming VCS experiments and demonstrate that the VCS observables in the energy region between pion production threshold and the Δ(1232)-resonance show an enhanced sensitivity to the generalized polarizabilities. A number of normal state transport properties of cuprate superconductors are analyzed in detail using the Boltzmann equation. The momentum dependence of the electronic structure and the strong momentum anisotropy of the electronic scattering are included in a phenomenological way via a multi-patch model. The Brillouin zone and the Fermi surface are divided in regions where scattering between the electrons is strong and the Fermi velocity is low (hot patches) and in regions where the scattering is weak and the Fermi velocity is large (cold patches). We present several motivations for this phenomenology starting from various microscopic approaches. A solution of the Boltzmann equation in the case of N patches is obtained and an expression for the distribution function away from equilibrium is given. Within this framework, and limiting our analysis to the two patches case, the temperature dependence of resistivity, thermoelectric power, Hall angle, magnetoresistance and thermal Hall conductivity are studied in a systematic way analyzing the role of the patch geometry and the temperature dependence of the scattering rates. In the case of Bi-based cuprates, using ARPES data for the electronic structure, and assuming an inter-patch scattering between hot and cold states with a linear temperature dependence, a reasonable agreement with the available experiments is obtained. The time-dependent treatment of positron-hydrogen scattering for a zero total angular momentum has been presented. The initial wavefunction of the positron-hydrogen scattering system has been expanded in terms of three dimensional dynamical wave functions to include all higher angular momenta by solving a set of three coupled differential equations. This wavefunction is then time evolved using Taylor series expansion of the evolution operator. The excitation probabilities are monitored as the wavefunction propagates until there is no more change in the probabilities. The positron impact excitation cross-sections extracted from the final wavefunction are compared with the available results of converged close coupling approach. We present the first application of Genetic Algorithms to the analysis of data from an aperiodically ordered system, high resolution X-Ray diffraction spectra from multilayer heterostructures arranged according to a deterministic or random scheme. This method paves the way to the solution of the “inverse problem”, that is the retrieval of the generating disorder from the investigation of the spectra of an unknown sample having non crystallographic, non quasi-crystallographic order. The study of deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) has shown that electromagnetic gauge invariance requires, to leading order, not only twist-two but additional twist-three contributions. We apply this analysis and, using the Ellis-Furmanski-Petronzio factorization scheme, compute the single- (electron) spin asymmetry arising in the collision of longitudinally polarized electrons with hadrons up to twist-3 accuracy. In order to simplify the kinematics we restrict the actual calculation to pions in the chiral limit. The process is described in terms of the generalized parton distribution functions which we obtain within a bag model framework. Received: 7 November 2001 / Accepted: 25 February 2002  相似文献
