A series of amphiphilic end‐linked conetworks was synthesized by the combination of two “quasiliving” polymerization techniques, quasiliving carbocationic (QLCCP) and group transfer polymerizations (GTP). The hydrophobic monomer was polyisobutylene methacrylate synthesized by the QLCCP of isobutylene and subsequent terminal modification reactions. The hydrophilic monomer was methacrylic acid (MAA) introduced via the polymerization of 2‐tetrahydropyranyl methacrylate followed by acid hydrolysis after (co)network formation. The conetwork syntheses were performed by sequential monomer/crosslinker additions under GTP conditions. All the precursors and the extractables from the conetworks were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR. The resulting polymer conetworks were investigated in terms of their degree of swelling (DS) in aqueous media and in tetrahydrofuran (THF) over the whole range of ionization of the MAA units and in n‐hexane for uncharged conetworks. The DSs in water increased with the degree of ionization (DI) of the MAA units and the hydrophilic content in the conetwork, whereas the DSs in THF increased with the reduction of the DI of the MAA units. The effective pK of the MAA units in the conetworks increased from 8.4 to 10.5 with decreasing MAA content. These findings can facilitate the design of similar unique conetworks with adjustable swelling behavior and composition‐dependent pK values. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined adaptative and amphiphilic polymer conetworks based on hydrophilic poly(N,N‐dimethylamino‐2‐ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) and hydrophobic poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) have been prepared by combination of ATRP, ROP, and “Click chemistry.” Telechelic α,ω‐alkyne terminated PCL crosslinker was obtained by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of CL in THF at 80 °C initiated by 1,4‐butanediol and catalyzed by tin(II) bis 2‐ethyl hexanoate (Sn(Oct)2), followed by the quantitative esterification of hydroxyl end‐groups by activated 4‐pentynoic acid. In parallel, an azido‐containing PDMAEMA‐based copolymer was obtained in a three‐step strategy involving primarily the copolymerization of DMAEMA with newly synthesized 2‐(2‐azidoethoxy)ethyl methacrylate (AEEMA) monomer. The latter was obtained by nucleophilic substitution of chloride atom from 2‐(2‐chloroethoxy)ethanol by an azide group followed by the esterification reaction of the hydroxyl group with methacrylic anhydride. The copolymerization was carried out in an equivolumic mixture of H2O and isopropanol at r.t. and initiated by a ω‐bromoisobutyryl oligo PEO macroinitiator in the presence of various ligated copper(I)‐based catalysts. In a last step, both polymer precursors were chemically linked by the Huisgen‐1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition in anhydrous THF at r.t. using CuBr complexed by 2,2′‐bipyridine ligand as catalyst. Final material was characterized by the means of DSC and SEM, both attesting of a homogeneous distribution of the PCL crosslinkers and a highly porous structure in this new amphiphilic model conetworks. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Seven amphiphilic conetworks of methacrylic acid (MAA) and a new hydrophobic monomer, 2-butyl-1-octyl-methacrylate (BOMA), were synthesized using group transfer polymerization. The MAA units were introduced via the polymerization of tetrahydropyranyl methacrylate (THPMA) followed by the removal of the protecting tetrahydropyranyl group by acid hydrolysis after network formation. Both THPMA and BOMA were in-house synthesized. Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) was used as the cross-linker. Six of the conetworks were model conetworks, containing copolymer chains between cross-links of precise molecular weight and composition. The prepared conetwork series covered a wide range of compositions and architectures. In particular, the MAA content was varied from 67 to 94 mol %, and three different conetwork architectures were constructed: ABA triblock copolymer-based, statistical copolymer-based, and randomly cross-linked. The linear conetwork precursors were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy in terms of their molecular weight and composition, both of which were found to be close to the theoretically calculated values. The degrees of swelling (DS) of all the amphiphilic conetworks were measured in water and in THF over the whole range of ionization of the MAA units. The DSs in water increased with the degree of ionization (DI) and the content of the hydrophilic MAA units in the conetwork, while the DSs in THF increased with the degree of polymerization of the chains between the cross-links and by reducing the DI of the MAA units. Finally, the nanophase behavior of the conetworks was probed using small-angle neutron scattering and atomic force microscopy.  相似文献

The rapid atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of benzyl methacrylate (BnMA) at ambient temperature was used to synthesize block copolymers with styrene as the second monomer. Various block copolymers such as AB diblock, BAB symmetric and asymmetric triblock, and ABABA pentablock copolymers were synthesized in which the polymerization of one of the blocks namely BnMA was performed at ambient temperature. It is demonstrated that the block copolymerization can be performed in a controlled manner, regardless of the sequence of monomer addition via halogen exchange technique. Using this reaction condition, the composition (ratio) of one block (here BnMA) can be varied from 1 to 100. It is further demonstrated that in the multiblock copolymer syntheses involving styrene and benzyl methacrylate, it is better to start from the PS macroinitiator compared with PBnMA macroinitiator. The polymers synthesized are relatively narrow dispersed (<1.5). It is identified that the ATRP of BnMA is limited to certain molecular weights of the PS macroinitiator. Additionally, a preliminary report about the synthesis of the block copolymer of BnMA‐methyl methacrylate (MMA), both at ambient temperature, is demonstrated. Subsequent deprotection of the benzyl group using Pd/C? H2 results in methacrylic acid (MAA)–methyl methacrylate (MAA–MMA) amphiphilic block copolymer. GPC, IR, and NMR are used to characterize the synthesized polymers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 2848–2861, 2006  相似文献

This article describes the synthesis and characterization of new amphiphilic polymer conetworks containing hydrophilic poly(2,3‐dihydroxypropyl methacrylate) or poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) and hydrophobic polyisobutylene chains. This conetworks were prepared by a two‐step polymer synthesis. In the first step, a cationic copolymer of isobutylene and 3‐isopropenyl‐α,α‐dimethylbenzyl isocyanate (IDI) was prepared. The isocyanate groups of the IB‐IDI random copolymer were subsequently transformed in situ to methacrylate (MA) groups in reaction with 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). In the second step, the resulting MA‐multifunctional PIB‐based crosslinker, PIB(MA)n, with an average functionality of approximately four per chain, was copolymerized with 2,3‐dihydroxypropyl methacrylate or poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate by radical mechanism in tetrahydrofuran giving rise to amphiphilic conetworks containing 11–60 mol % of DHPMA or 10–12 mol % of PEGMA. The synthesized conetworks were characterized with solid‐state 13C‐NMR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The amphiphilic nature of the conetworks was proved by swelling in both water and n‐heptane. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 4074–4081, 2007  相似文献

Methyl methacrylate (MMA)/tert‐butyl methacrylate (tBMA) gradient copolymers having linear and hyperbolic composition profiles were synthesized. These special copolymer products were achieved via a model‐based computer‐controlled semibatch atom transfer radical copolymerization (ATRcoP) process. A simple ATRcoP model was developed based on the terminal model. The equilibrium constants in the ATRP of MMA and tBMA were estimated by the data correlation. The model was verified by batch experiments and was found to give good correlation for the polymerization rate, molecular weight, and copolymer composition data. The model coupled with a reactor model was then applied to the semibatch ATRcoP and was used to calculate comonomer feeding rates for the targeted gradient composition profiles. It was found that the experimental monomer conversion, molecular weight, and cumulative copolymer composition were in good agreement with their targeted theoretical values. The gradient copolymers had low polydispersities close to 1.1. This work demonstrated the feasibility of the model‐based semibatch ATRcoP in fine‐tuning gradient copolymer composition profiles. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Various star‐shaped copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and n‐butyl methacrylate (nBMA) were synthesized in one pot with RuCl2(PPh3)3‐catalyzed living radical polymerization and subsequent polymer linking reactions with divinyl compounds. Sequential living radical polymerization of nBMA and MMA in that order and vice versa, followed by linking reactions of the living block copolymers with appropriate divinyl compounds, afforded star block copolymers consisting of AB‐ or BA‐type block copolymer arms with controlled lengths and comonomer compositions in high yields (≥90%). The lengths and compositions of each unit varied with the amount of each monomer feed. Star copolymers with random copolymer arms were prepared by the living radical random copolymerization of MMA and nBMA followed by linking reactions. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel, unique amphiphilic pentablock terpolymers consisting of the highly hydrophobic polyisobutylene (PIB) mid-segment attached to the hydrophilic combshaped poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (PPEGMA) polymacromonomer chains, which are coupled to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) outer segments were synthesized by the combination of quasiliving carbocationic polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, a bifunctional PIB macroinitiator was prepared by quasiliving carbocationic polymerization and subsequent quantitative chain end derivatizations. Quasiliving ATRP of PEGMAs with different molecular weights (Mn = 188, 300 and 475 g/mol) led to triblock copolymers which were further reacted with MMA under ATRP conditions to obtain PMMA-PPEGMA-PIB-PPEGMA-PMMA ABCBA-type pentablock copolymers. It was found that slow initiation takes place between the PIB macroinitiator and PEGMA macromonomers with higher molecular weights via ATRP. ATRP of MMA with the resulting block copolymers composed of PIB and PPEGMA chain segments led to the desired block copolymers with high initiating efficiency. Investigations of the resulting pentablock copolymers by DSC, SAXS and phase mode AFM revealed that nanophase separation occurs in these new macromolecular structures with average domain distances of 11-14 nm, and local lamellar self-assembly takes place in the pentablocks with PPEGMA polymacromonomer segments of PEGMAs with Mn of 118 g/mol and 300 g/mol, while disordered nanophases are observed in the block copolymer with PEGMA having molecular weight of 475 g/mol. These new amphiphilic block copolymers composed of biocompatible chain segments can find applications in a variety of advanced fields.  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanoparticles with a sensitive CO2‐responsive hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface that confers controlled dispersion and aggregation in water were prepared by emulsion polymerization at 50 °C under CO2 bubbling using amphiphilic diblock copolymers of 2‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and N‐isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAm) as an emulsifier. The amphiphilicity of the hydrophobic–hydrophilic diblock copolymer at 50 °C was triggered by CO2 bubbling in water and enabled the copolymer to serve as an emulsifier. The resulting PMMA nanoparticles were spherical, approximately 100 nm in diameter and exhibited sensitive CO2/N2‐responsive dispersion/aggregation in water. Using copolymers with a longer PNIPAAm block length as an emulsifier resulted in smaller particles. A higher concentration of copolymer emulsifier led to particles with a stickier surface. Given its simple preparation and reversible CO2‐triggered amphiphilic behavior, this newly developed block copolymer emulsifier offers a highly efficient route toward the fabrication of sensitive CO2‐stimuli responsive polymeric nanoparticle dispersions.

A new facile method for preparation of an amphiphilic block copolymer via a one‐pot sequential atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) on solid support was developed. As a model homopolymerization for the solid‐supported block copolymerization, ATRPs of MMA and HEMA in toluene and in 2‐butanone/1‐propanol solvent system were carried out, respectively. Crosslinked polystyrene beads bearing 2‐bromoisobutyrate moieties successfully initiated the polymerizations of MMA and HEMA in controlled manner. On the basis of the successful results, the one‐pot synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymer by changing the reaction medium was performed. After the ATRP of MMA in toluene at 90 °C for 1 h, the poly(MMA) formed on the beads were washed by continuous flow of 2‐butanone/1‐propanol under nitrogen with the aid of a glass filter in a U‐shaped glass vessel. Then, 2‐butanone/1‐propanol, copper chloride (I), 2,2′‐bipyridyl, and HEMA were added and heated at 50 °C for 48 h with shaking the vessel, followed by treatment with trifluoroacetic acid to isolate the well‐defined amphiphilic block copolymer, poly(MMA‐b‐HEMA). These demonstrated the feasibility of the present strategy for well‐defined synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers via a one‐pot procedure. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Gradient copolymers of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) having prescribed linear, parabolic, and hyperbolic composition profiles were synthesized with the guidance of a numerical model that determines the instantaneous comonomer feed rate. These materials exhibit low polydispersity indices (<1.1); the evolution of the overall DMAEMA content and the absolute molecular weight of the copolymers are all in good agreement with the quantities predicted by our model. Compared to random copolymers of HEMA and DMAEMA, the cloud points of dilute buffered aqueous solutions of gradient copolymers decrease with increasing gradient strength; where the gradient strength is defined as the largest difference in the instantaneous composition along the copolymer. The temperature range over which the solutions transition from transparent to turbid also broadens significantly with increasing gradient strength. Both observations suggest the onset of transition to be dictated by the least soluble ends of the polymer chains. These correlations point to the importance of monomer sequence distribution in determining the macroscopic physical properties of copolymers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)‐containing quasi‐model amphiphilic polymer conetworks (APCNs) were prepared by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using α,ω‐bis(2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate)‐PEG as a bifunctional RAFT macrochain transfer agent (macro‐CTA) and stepwise additions of a hydrophobic monomer and a crosslinker (crosslinker: macro‐CTA = 10:1, reaction time 24 h). Three different types of monomers, methyl methacrylate (MMA), n‐butyl acrylate and styrene, were employed as the hydrophobic monomers, whereas ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, ethylene glycol diacrylate and 1,4‐divinylbenzene served as the respective crosslinkers. PEG homopolymer hydrophilic quasi‐model networks were also prepared by RAFT‐polymerizing the three crosslinkers directly onto the two active ends of the PEG‐based macro‐CTA. From the three ABA triblock copolymers prepared, the MMA‐containing one was obtained at the highest polymerization yields. The crosslinking yields of the three ABA triblock copolymers with the corresponding crosslinkers were higher than those of the PEG‐based macro‐CTA with the same crosslinkers. The degrees of swelling (DSs) of all conetworks were measured in water and in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The DSs of the APCNs in THF were higher than those in water, whereas the reverse was true for the DSs of the hydrophilic homopolymer networks. Finally, the aqueous DSs of the APCNs were lower than those of the corresponding hydrophilic homopolymer networks. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of amphiphilic thermoresponsive copolymers was synthesized by group transfer polymerization. Seven copolymers were prepared based on the nonionic hydrophobic n‐butyl methacrylate (BuMA), the ionizable hydrophilic and thermoresponsive 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and the nonionic hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol)methyl methacrylate (PEGMA). In particular, one diblock copolymer and six tricomponent copolymers of different architectures and compositions, one random and five triblock copolymers, were synthesized. The polymers and their precursors were characterized in terms of their molecular weight and composition using gel permeation chromatography and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, respectively. Aqueous solutions of the polymers were studied by turbidimetry, hydrogen ion titration, and light scattering to determine their cloud points, pKas, and hydrodynamic diameters and investigate the effect of the polymers' composition and architecture. The thermoresponsive behavior of the copolymers was also studied. By increasing the temperature, all polymer solutions became more viscous, but only one polymer, the one with the highest content of the hydrophobic BuMA, formed a stable physical gel. Interestingly, the thermoresponsive behavior of these triblock copolymers was affected not only by the terpolymers' composition but also by the terpolymers' architecture. These findings can facilitate the design and engineering of injectable copolymers for tissue engineering that could enable the in situ formation of physical gels at body temperature. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel graft copolymers consisting of perfluorocyclobutyl aryl ether‐based backbone and poly(methyl methacrylate) side chains were synthesized by the combination of thermal [2π + 2π] step‐growth cycloaddition polymerization of aryl bistrifluorovinyl ether monomer and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate. A new aryl bistrifluorovinyl ether monomer, 2‐methyl‐1,4‐bistrifluorovinyloxybenzene, was first synthesized in two steps from commercially available reagents, and this monomer was homopolymerized in diphenyl ether to provide the corresponding perfluorocyclobutyl aryl ether‐based homopolymer with methoxyl end groups. The fluoropolymer was then converted to ATRP macroinitiator by the monobromination of the pendant methyls with N‐bromosuccinimide and benzoyl peroxide. The grafting‐from strategy was finally used to obtain the novel poly(2‐methyl‐1,4‐bistrifluorovinyloxybenzene)‐g‐poly(methyl methacrylate) graft copolymers with relatively narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.46) via ATRP of methyl methacrylate at 50 °C in anisole initiated by the Br‐containing macroinitiator using CuBr/dHbpy as catalytic system. These fluorine‐containing graft copolymers can dissolve in most organic solvents. This is the first example of the graft copolymer possessing perfluorocyclobutyl aryl ether‐based backbone. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

Functionalizing biosourced materials is a major topic in the field of materials science. In particular, grafting polymerization techniques have been employed to change the surface properties of various substrates. Here, we report on the grafting of amphiphilic block copolymers in lignocellulosic materials using surface‐initiated activators generated by electron transfer atomic transfer radical polymerization (SI‐AGET‐ATRP). With this modification, it is possible to combine the interesting properties (anisotropy and high mechanical stability) of lightweight lignocellulosic materials, such as wood, with the special properties of the grafted block copolymers. Hydroxyl groups on wood cell wall biopolymers were used for the chemical bonding of an alkyl bromide as the initiator for AGET‐SI‐ATRP of a highly hydrophilic monomer ([2‐(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride) and a highly hydrophobic fluorinated monomer (2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5‐octafluoropentyl methacrylate). The successful grafting of homopolymers and block copolymers onto the wood structure was confirmed through Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The functionalization with the two homopolymers yielded lignocellulosic materials with opposite wettabilities, whereas by the adjustment of the ratio between the two copolymer blocks, it was possible to tune the wettability between these two extremes. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABA block copolymers of methyl methacrylate and methylphenylsilane were synthesized with a methodology based on atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The reaction of samples of α,ω‐dihalopoly(methylphenylsilane) with 2‐hydroxyethyl‐2‐methyl‐2‐bromoproprionate gave suitable macroinitiators for the ATRP of methyl methacrylate. The latter procedure was carried out at 95 °C in a xylene solution with CuBr and 2,2‐bipyridine as the initiating system. The rate of the polymerization was first‐order with respect to monomer conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry was used to obtain preliminary evidence of phase separation in the copolymer products. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tandem atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) were used to synthesize a polystyrene‐co‐poly(acrylic acid) (poly(St‐co‐AA)) network, in which the two components were interconnected by covalent bond. First, a specific cross‐linker, 1,4‐bis(1′‐(4″‐acryloyloxy‐2″,2″,6″,6″‐tetramethylpiperidinyloxy)ethyl)benzene (di‐AET), a bifunctional alkoxyamine possessing two acrylate groups, was copolymerized with tert‐butyl acrylate through ATRP to prepare a precursor gel. The gel was then used to initiate the NMRP of styrene to prepare poly(St‐co‐(t‐BA)) conetwork, in which the cross‐linkages are composed of polystyrene segments. Finally, the poly(St‐co‐(t‐BA)) conetwork was hydrolyzed to produce amphiphilic poly(St‐co‐AA) conetwork. The resulting gels show swelling ability in both organic solvent and water, which is characteristic of amphiphilic conetworks. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene‐g‐styrene) and poly(ethylene‐g‐methyl methacrylate) graft copolymers were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Commercially available poly(ethylene‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) was converted into ATRP macroinitiators by reaction with chloroacetic acid and 2‐bromoisobutyric acid, respectively, and the pendant‐functionalized polyolefins were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene and methyl methacrylate. In both cases, incorporation of the vinyl monomer into the graft copolymer increased with extent of the reaction. The controlled growth of the side chains was proved in the case of poly(ethylene‐g‐styrene) by the linear increase of molecular weight with conversion and low polydispersity (Mw /Mn < 1.4) of the cleaved polystyrene grafts. Both macroinitiators and graft copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 2440–2448, 2000  相似文献

The synthesis of a fluorinated macroinitiator for copper-catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is reported, as well as its use for the controlled living polymerization of poly(propylene glycol) methacrylate (PPGM) in MEK at 80 °C. The ATRP system used was efficient for polymerization of the functionalized monomer and the molecular weight of the polymer estimated by NMR spectroscopy was in close agreement with the theoretical molecular weight, as expected for controlled processes. The statistical copolymerization of PPGM or methyl ether poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (MPEGMA) with a perfluoroalkyl ethyl methacrylate by copper-mediated ATRP was also investigated and led to copolymers with essentially random incorporation of monomers. The syntheses and characterization of star-like homopolymers of MPEGMA or the fluorinated monomer via ATRP are also reported, as well as an amphiphilic star-like block copolymer containing ethyleneglycol units as the core and fluorinated moieties in the shell. The micellar behavior of this copolymer was investigated as a function of the external environment.  相似文献
