By means of first‐principles calculations we predict the stability of silicene as buckled honeycomb lattice on passivated substrates of group‐IV(111)1 × 1 surfaces. The weak van‐der‐Waals interaction between silicene and substrates does not destroy its linear bands forming Dirac cones at the Brillouin zone corners. Only very small fundamental gaps are opened around the Fermi level.

We have demonstrated high color rendering index (CRI) and chromatic stability of top‐emitting white organic light‐emitting diodes (TEWOLEDs) by capping a supplementary green color conversion layer (CCL) on the cathode of single blue emitter based TEWOLEDs. By employing CCLs, blue photon energy is absorbed and converted to green emission efficiently, resulting in an improvement of CRI from 72 to 86. We attribute the increased high CRI to the broadening of the out‐coupled spectrum and an appropriate intensity match among the three primary colors. Meanwhile, the TEWOLEDs show extremely high chromatic stability. The results indicate that this method provides a new avenue to improve the CRI of TEWOLEDs.

Polymer nanocomposites containing different concentrations of Au nanoparticles have been investigated by small angle X‐ray scattering and electronic absorption spectroscopy. The variation in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band of Au nanoparticles with concentration is described by a scaling law. The variation in the plasmon band of ReO3 nanoparticles embedded in polymers also follows a similar scaling law.

The growth, structural and optical characterisation of dilute nitride alloys of InSb grown by plasma‐assisted molecular beam epitaxy is presented. The layers were characterised by high‐resolution X‐ray diffraction indicating high crystalline quality and nitrogen incorporations up to 0.68%. Fourier‐transform infrared absorption measurements reveal the position of the absorption edge to be a result of the competing effects of bandgap reduction (due to nitrogen incorporation and bandgap renormalisation) and Moss–Burstein band filling.

The possibility of multiferroicity arising from charge ordering in LuFe2O4 and structurally related rare earth ferrites is reviewed. Recent experimental work on macroscopic indications of ferroelectricity and microscopic determination of coupled spin and charge order indicates that this scenario does not hold. Understanding the origin of the experimentally observed charge and spin order will require further theoretical work. Other aspects of recent research in these materials, such as geometrical frustration effects, possible electric‐field‐induced transitions, or orbital order are also briefly treated.

A new method for fabricating carbon nanotube‐conducting polymer (CNT‐CP) composite single nanowires is reported. The method developed is highly efficient, reliable, and economical because it obviates the time consuming process of template fabrication and the post‐synthesis task of positioning nanowires. Single nanowires with diameters of 50‐500 nm are fabricated between electrodes, self‐templated by dielectrophoresis and electropolymerization. Fabrication of an individually addressed nanowire array with cantilever electrodes on a microchip is demonstrated.

We have shown that nitrophenyl groups may be added to the surface of few‐layer epitaxial graphene (EG) by the formation of covalent carbon–carbon bonds thereby changing the electronic structure and transport properties of EG from near‐metallic to semiconducting. In the present Letter we discuss the opportunities afforded by such chemical processes to engineer device functionality in graphene by modification of the electronic properties without physical patterning.

We report on solution‐processible polymer solar cells (PSCs) fabricated on a papery substrate using carton. Highly conductive PEDOT:PSS was used as a bottom anode and planarization layer, and a semi‐transparent top cathode was applied. This research could be an important approach to the development of all‐solution‐processible papery PSCs as well as paper electronics.

We study the spin ordering of a quantum dot defined via magnetic barriers in an interacting quantum spin Hall edge. The spin‐resolved density–density correlation functions are computed. We show that strong electron interactions induce a ground state with a highly correlated spin pattern. The crossover from the liquid‐type correlations at weak interactions to the ground state spin texture found at strong interactions parallels the formation of a one‐dimensional Wigner molecule in an ordinary strongly interacting quantum dot.

We report enhanced anomalous photovoltaic effects and switchable photovoltage generation in pure and Pr–Cr co‐doped BiFeO3 (BFO) nanotubes (NTs). Influence of metal doping on short circuit current, open circuit voltage, power conversion efficiency and fill factor are investigated. The power conversion efficiency of pure BFO NTs (~0.207%) is found to be enhanced by several orders of magnitude in comparison with the reported bulk effect. Pr‐doped NTs provide highest values of power conversion efficiency (~0.5%).

Interaction between negatively charged Nafion® and a positively charged polybenzimidazole‐decorated carbon nanotube leads to the formation of an ionic complex with high charge density for proton conduction, which can lead to an improvement in transport properties. Here we investigate the high‐temperature and low‐humidity proton conductivity of this nanocomposite membrane as a potential membrane for fuel cell applications.

We report the maskless fabrication of ultrathin suspended GaN membranes designed by focused ion beam treatment of the GaN epilayer surface with subsequent photoelectrochemical etching. This technological approach allows the fabrication of ultrathin membranes, as well as supporting micro/nanocolumns in a controlled fashion. The analysis of the spatial and spectral distribution of microcathodoluminescence demonstrates that the membranes exhibit mainly yellow luminescence. These results pave the way for the fabrication of ultrathin suspended GaN membranes for MEMS/NEMS applications.

We report on the photoconductance in two‐dimensional arrays of gold nanorods. The arrays are formed by a combination of droplet deposition and stamping methods. We find that the plasmon induced photoconductance is sensitive to the linear polarization of the exciting photons consistent with the excitation of the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance of the nanorods.

Write‐once–read‐many‐times memory (WORM) devices were fabricated using Ti/Au and Au as top contacts on ZnO thin films on Si. Electrical characterization shows that both types of WORM devices have large resistance OFF/ON ratio (R ratio), small resistance distribution range, long retention and good endurance. WORM devices with Au top contact have better performance of higher R ratio because of a larger work function of Au compared to Ti.

Twinning in a CuInS2 layer in a completed thin‐film solar cell was analyzed by means of electron backscatter diffraction. This technique revealed the microstructure of the CuInS2 thin films and local orientation relationships between the grains. At various locations within the layer it was possible to retrace how twinning occurred comparing the local orientations with the theoretically possible changes in orientation by twinning. Epitaxial TiC/SiC multilayers were grown by magnetron sputtering at a substrate temperature of 550 °C, where SiC is normally amorphous. The epitaxial TiC template induced growth of cubic SiC up to a thickness of ~2 nm. Thicker SiC layers result in a direct transition to growth of the metastable amorphous SiC followed by renucleation of nanocrystalline TiC layers.

Alkali‐free Cu(In,Ga)Se2(CIGS) absorbers grown on Mo‐coated alumina (Al2O3) substrates were doped with potassium (K) after CIGS growth by a potassium fluoride (KF) post‐deposition treatment (PDT). The addition of K to the absorber leads to a strong increase in cell efficiency from 10.0% for the K‐free cell to 14.2% for the K‐doped cell, mainly driven by an increase in the open‐circuit voltage Voc and the fill factor FF, and to an increase in the net charge carrier density. Hence K doping by KF‐PDT is comparable to doping with Na.

Graphene, the two‐dimensional form of carbon presents outstanding electronic and transport properties. This gives hope for the development of applications in nanoelectronics. However, for industrial purpose, graphene has to be supported by a substrate. We focus here on the graphene‐on‐SiC system to discuss how the SiC substrate interacts with the graphene layer and to show the effect of the interface on graphene atomic and electronic structures.

As electronic operating frequencies increase toward the terahertz regime, new electrooptic modulators capable of low‐voltage high‐frequency operation must be developed to provide the necessary optical interconnects. This Letter presents a new concept that exploits modulation instability to compensate for the intrinsically weak electrooptic effect, χ(2). Simulations demonstrate more than 50 times enhancement of electrooptic effect at millimeter wave frequencies leading to a substantial reduction in the required modulation voltage.

ZnO thin films with a rippled surface structure were used as electron‐collecting layers of inverted organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Using additional ultrathin layers of ZnO and TiO2 fabricated using atomic layer deposition (ALD), not only the power‐conversion efficiency of the OPVs could be increased (up to 3.5%), but also the photovoltaic performance became nearly constant within 100 days without any additional encapsulations of the solar cells under ambient conditions.
