Herein, we report the preparation of structured multistimuli‐responsive surfaces able to change reversibly both their chemical composition depending on the environment and their surface behavior by varying either/both the pH or/and the temperature. For that purpose, we took advantage of the surface segregation in homopolymer/diblock copolymer blends, composed of either polystyrene‐block‐poly(N,N′‐dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate) (PS‐b‐PDMAEMA) or polystyrene‐block‐poly (N,N′‐diethylaminoethylmethacrylate) (PS‐b‐PDEAEMA) and high molecular weight polystyrene used as a matrix. The variations of the surface composition as a function of the environment of exposure (air or water vapor) was investigated were investigated by XPS and contact angle measurements. The water‐annealed surfaces contain PDMAEMA or PDEAEMA at the surface and are additionally able to respond both to pH and temperature as demonstrated by the Wilhelmy technique. Both PDMAEMA and PDEAEMA can switch from a hydrophilic state to a collapsed hydrophobic state increasing the temperature above the LCST. More interestingly, as a result of the microphase separation of the block copolymers at the interface, the surfaces of the blends exhibit structuration. Thus, either micellar structures or “donut‐like” morphologies were obtained by using THF or toluene, respectively, as solvent. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Monodisperse functional multiresponsive particles were prepared by encapsulation of an amphiphilic diblock copolymer during the precipitation polymerization of polystyrene and divinylbenzene in one single step. The amphiphilic diblock copolymer employed throughout this study, polystyrene‐b‐poly (dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PDMAEMA) has been synthesized by ATRP in two consecutive polymerization steps. After encapsulation of the block copolymer within the microsphere, the surface modification of the particle occurs spontaneously upon exposure to water by surface segregation of the hydrophilic PDMAEMA block, thus without any additional post‐polymerization and/or chemical modification steps. The response of the functionalized particles both to pH and temperature was analyzed by potential zeta and DSC measurements. Upon dispersion of the particles in acidic media, the PDMAEMA block in its charged state is soluble and does not exhibit any change by heating. At higher pH values and temperatures above 35 °C (Low Critical Solubility Temperature of the PDMAEMA block) the hydrophilic segment collapses as detected by differential scanning calorimetry. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe the preparation of surfaces with controlled surface chemistry and topology combining both surface segregation of block copolymers and “breath figures” formation. For that purpose, an amphiphilic ABC triblock copolymer, that is, poly(2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene)‐b‐polystyrene‐b‐poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] (PS5F21b‐PS31b‐PPEGMA38) was mixed with high molecular weight polystyrene and spin coated in a moist atmosphere. As demonstrated by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy analysis, the surfaces exhibit spherical holes with diameters between 100 and 300 nm. The holes, enriched in triblock copolymer, exhibit variable chemical composition and topography depending on the environmental conditions. The surface functionality could be reversibly modulated: whereas under humid conditions the PPEGMA hydrophilic block reorients towards the surface, annealing to dry air directs the PS5F fluorinated block to the interface. Equally, surfaces annealed to humid air changed their topography from holes to islands depending on the extent of swelling of the PPEGMA block. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A double hydrophilic block copolymer composed of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(4‐vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) was obtained through hydrolysis of diblock copolymer of poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA) and P4VP synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization. Water‐soluble micelles with PAA core and P4VP corona were observed at low (acidic) pH, while micelles with P4VP core and PAA corona were formed at high (basic) pH. Two metalloporphyrins, zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) and cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin (CoTPP), were used as model compounds to investigate the encapsulation of hydrophobic molecules by both types of micelles. UV–vis spectroscopic measurements indicate that micelles with P4VP core are able to entrap more ZnTPP and CoTPP as a result of the axial coordination between the transition metals and the pyridine groups. The study found that metalloporphyrins encapsulated by the micelles with PAA core could be released on pH increase, while those entrapped by the micelles with P4VP core could be released on pH decrease. This behavior originates from the two‐way pH change‐induced disruption of PAA‐b‐P4VP micelles. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1734–1744, 2006  相似文献

We performed a critical reinvestigation of microwave enhancement of nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP) of acrylamide (AM) in aqueous media in the dynamic (DYN) mode with a combination of a conventional hydrosoluble radical initiator and a β‐phosphonylated nitroxide (SG1). Based on the results of our previous work, a complementary series of polymerization reactions was carried out between 130 and 160 °C using only the DYN mode to ascertain the existence of a microwave effect. The polymer conversion (p), molar masses, polydispersity index, and viscosity of each sample were measured. The temperature was monitored inside and outside of the vessel using an optical fiber sensor and an IR sensor, respectively. Microwave enhancement of polymerization, temperature control and viscosity of the reaction media were closely related. We also furthered the field of hydrophilic AB diblock copolymer synthesis using a tertiary SG1‐based macroalkoxyamine and directly synthesized both poly(acrylamide‐b‐sodium 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonate), a neutral‐b‐anionic diblock copolymer, and poly(acrylamide‐b‐3‐dimethyl(methacrylamidopropyl)ammonium propanesulfonate), a neutral‐b‐zwitterionic diblock copolymer, in homogeneous aqueous media. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe the preparation, by precipitation copolymerization, of multifunctional divinylbenzene-co-pentafluorostyrene microspheres able to produce superhydrophobic surfaces or disperse in aqueous media upon annealing either in air or water, respectively. For that purpose, an amphiphilic block copolymer, polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid), was introduced in the initial feed composed of divinylbenzene and 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene. As a result, fluorinated particles were obtained in which the diblock copolymer was encapsulated during the polymerization step. Upon annealing in dry air, the particles are completely hydrophobic and form superhydrophobic surfaces. On the contrary, annealing in water induces the reorientation of the PAA groups toward the particle interface, thus the particles can be dispersed in aqueous media. In addition, the presence of carboxylic acid groups at the particle interface permits us to switch the surface charge between negative and neutral depending on the environmental pH.  相似文献

The diblock copolymers of polystyrene and poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PSt‐b‐PtBA) with various molecular weights and hydrophobic/hydrophilic (styrene/acrylic acid) chain length were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Selective hydrolysis of the diblock copolymers (PSt‐b‐PtBA) resulted in amphiphilic block copolymers of polystyrene and poly(acrylic acid) (PSt‐b‐PAA). The amphiphilic block copolymers of PSt‐b‐PAA with average molecular weight (Mn) <7500 were proved to be critical in dispersing the pigments of UV curable ink‐jet inks for manufacturing the color filter. Incorporating DB2 diblock copolymer dispersants with styrene/acrylic acid ratio at 1.5 allowed more UV curable compositions in the red and blue inks without deteriorating pigment dispersing stability and jetting properties of the ink‐jet inks. The ink drops can be precisely ejected into the tiny color area. Better properties of the cured red stripe such as nanoindentation hardness and chemical resistance were found. The competing absorption of UV light by the blue pigment hindered the through cure of monomers near the interface between glass substrate and the blue stripe. This leads to lower hardness and poor chemical resistance of the UV cured blue stripe. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 3337–3353, 2005  相似文献

AB block copolymers composed of hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and hydrophobic poly(amino acid) with a carboxyl group at the end of PEG were synthesized with α‐carboxylic sodium‐ω‐amino‐PEG as a macroinitiator for the ring‐opening polymerization of N‐carboxy anhydride. Characterizations by 1H NMR, IR, and gel permeation chromatography were carried out to confirm that the diblock copolymers were formed. In aqueous media this copolymer formed self‐associated polymer micelles that have a carboxyl group on the surface. The carboxyl groups located at the outer shell of the polymeric micelle were expected to combine with ligands to target specific cell populations. The diameter of the polymer micelles was in the range of 30–80 nm. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 3527–3536, 2004  相似文献

The addition of mixture of polystyrene‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PS‐b‐PNIPAM) and polystyrene homopolymer (h‐PS) in tetrahydrofuran dropwise into water leads to nanoparticles with a PS core and a thermally sensitive PNIPAM shell. The effects of the ratio of the homopolymer to copolymer and temperature on the formation and stabilization of the dispersion were investigated by using a combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering. PNIPAM shell continuously collapses as temperature increases in the range 20–40 °C. Such formed particles are stable even at temperatures much higher than lower critical solution temperature (LCST ~ 32 °C) of PNIPAM. Our results reveal that the area occupied per hydrophilic PNIPAM chain on the hydrophobic PS core remains nearly a constant regardless of the amount of h‐PS in the polymer mixture. This clearly indicates that the surface area occupied per hydrophilic group is a critical parameter for stabilizing particles dispersed in water. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe the surface segregation of polypeptide-based block copolymer micelles to produce stimuli-responsive nanostructures at the polymer blend/air interface. Such structures were obtained by simultaneous surface migration and self assembly at the surface of diblock copolymer/homopolymer blends. We employed blends composed of homopolymer (PS) and an amphiphilic block copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(l-glutamic acid) (PS-b-PGA). The surface was functionalized based on the preferential segregation to the polymer blend/air interface of the hydrophilic PGA block of the diblock copolymer upon annealing to water vapor. The surface migration of the diblock copolymer to the interface was demonstrated both by XPS and contact angle measurements. As a consequence, the PGA interfacial attraction leads to a large surface excess on diblock copolymer which in turn, through macrophase and microphase separation, produced separated domains at the surface with regions composed either of homo or block copolymer. Herein we demonstrate that the use of asymmetric diblock copolymers with a higher content in PS lead to spherical micellar assemblies randomly distributed at the surface. As observed by AFM imaging the blend composition, i.e. the amount of block copolymer within the blend influences the density of micelles at the surface. Finally, when exposed to water, the pH affects the surface morphology. The PGA segments are collapsed at low pH values and extended at pH values above 4.8, thus inducing variations on the topography of the films at the nanometer scale.  相似文献

Switchable binary polymer brushes grafted to Si-wafers were prepared from hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer components. When exposed to solvents, either the hydrophobic or the hydrophilic component extends in to the liquid phase, depending on the polarity of the solvent. The hydrophilic component was poly-2-vinylpyridine; the hydrophobic component was made photocrosslinkable in that a polystyrene copolymer containing a photodimerizing chromophore was used. In this system surfaces differing in water contact angle between 60° and 100° can be produced by variation of the solvent. The chromophore was phenylindene, which forms crosslinks upon direct UV-irradiation. Therefore, the polystyrene component can be fixed in the extended or collapsed state. It will be shown that by irradiation through an appropriate mask, surfaces can be structured and the structures fixed. In both the systems structural patterns differing in surface properties were produced and fixed photochemically.  相似文献

The diblock copolymer poly(methyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(sodium sulfonated glycidyl methacrylate) (PMMA‐b‐PSGMA) was end‐attached by its hydrophobic block (PMMA) onto mica hydrophobized by a stearic trimethylammonium iodide (STAI) layer, to form a polyelectrolyte brush immersed in water. With a surface force balance (SFB), we extended earlier measurements between two such brush layers for the case of normal and shear forces at different shear rates, surface separation, and compressions between one mica surface coated with STAI or a STAI‐diblock layer against a bare mica surface. After coating one of the surfaces with STAI, a long range attraction that results in a jump into an adhesive flat contact between the hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces was observed. A very different behavior was seen after forming the polyelectrolyte brush on the STAI‐coated surface. The long range attraction was replaced by repulsion, accompanied by very low friction during shear (ca. three orders of magnitude lower than with adsorbed polyelectrolytes). On further compression, a weak attraction to the adhesive contact was observed. From the final surface–surface contact separation, we deduce that most of the polyelectrolyte diblock brush layer was squeezed out from the gap, leaving the STAI layer and a small amount of the polymer attached to the surface. Stick‐sliding behavior was seen while applying shear, suggesting a dissipation mechanism caused by the trapped polyelectrolyte. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel amphiphilic fluorinated ABC‐type triblock copolymers composed of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) monomethyl ether (MeOPEO), hydrophobic polystyrene (PSt), and hydrophobic/lipophobic poly(perfluorohexylethyl acrylate) (PFHEA) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA)/CuBr as a catalyst system. The bromide‐terminated diblock copolymers poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene (MeOPEO‐b‐PSt‐Br) were prepared by the ATRP of styrene initiated with the macroinitiator MeOPEO‐Br, which was obtained by the esterification of poly(ethylene oxide) monomethyl ether (MeOPEO) with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. A fluorinated block of poly(perfluorohexylethyl acrylate) (PFHEA) was then introduced into the diblock copolymer by a second ATRP process to synthesize a novel ABC‐type triblock copolymer, poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐poly(perfluorohexylethyl acrylate) (MeOPEO‐b‐PSt‐b‐PFHEA). These block copolymers were characterized by means of proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Water contact angle measurements revealed that the polymeric coating of the triblock copolymer (MeOPEO‐b‐PSt‐b‐PFHEA) shows more hydrophobic than that of the corresponding diblock copolymer (MeOPEO‐b‐PSt). Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a model protein to evaluate the protein adsorption property and the triblock copolymer coating posseses excellent protein‐resistant character prior to the corresponding diblock copolymer and polydimethylsiloxane. These amphiphilic fluoropolymers can expect to have potential applications for antifouling coatings and antifouling membranes. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A hetero‐arm star polymer, poly(ethylene glycol)‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐poly(L‐lysine) (PEG‐PNIPAM‐PLys), was synthesized by “clicking” the azide group at the junction of PEG‐b‐PNIPAM diblock copolymer with the alkyne end‐group of poly(L‐lysine) (PLys) homopolymer via 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition. The resultant polymer was characterized by gel permeation chromatography, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopes. Surprisingly, the PNIPAM arm of this hetero‐arm star polymer nearly lose its thermal responsibility. It is found that stable polyelectrolyte complex micelles are formed when mixing the synthesized polymer with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) in water. The resultant polyelectrolyte complex micelles are core‐shell spheres with the ion‐bonded PLys/PAA chains as core and the PEG and PNIPAM chains as shell. The PNIPAM shell is, as expected, thermally responsive. However, its lower critical solution temperature is shifted to 37.5 °C, presumably because of the existence of hydrophilic components in the micelles. Such star‐like PEG‐PNIPAM‐PLys polymer with different functional arms as well as its complexation with anionic polymers provides an excellent and well‐defined model for the design of nonviral vectors to deliver DNA, RNA, and anionic molecular medicines. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanoparticles with a sensitive CO2‐responsive hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface that confers controlled dispersion and aggregation in water were prepared by emulsion polymerization at 50 °C under CO2 bubbling using amphiphilic diblock copolymers of 2‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and N‐isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAm) as an emulsifier. The amphiphilicity of the hydrophobic–hydrophilic diblock copolymer at 50 °C was triggered by CO2 bubbling in water and enabled the copolymer to serve as an emulsifier. The resulting PMMA nanoparticles were spherical, approximately 100 nm in diameter and exhibited sensitive CO2/N2‐responsive dispersion/aggregation in water. Using copolymers with a longer PNIPAAm block length as an emulsifier resulted in smaller particles. A higher concentration of copolymer emulsifier led to particles with a stickier surface. Given its simple preparation and reversible CO2‐triggered amphiphilic behavior, this newly developed block copolymer emulsifier offers a highly efficient route toward the fabrication of sensitive CO2‐stimuli responsive polymeric nanoparticle dispersions. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Amphiphilic diblock copolymers consisting of a hydrophilic block, poly(acrylic acid), and a hydrophobic block, polystyrene, were synthesized by direct nitroxide‐mediated polymerization using the PS block as a macro‐initiator for the first time. Several techniques were used to characterize the amphiphilic block copolymers (size exclusion chromatography, NMR spectroscopy). The proposed method can lead to samples with a broad range of composition and molar mass. Preliminary studies of their self‐assembly in aqueous medium using fluorescence spectroscopy and small‐angle neutron scattering are presented.

We describe herein the synthesis and self‐assembly characteristics of a doubly responsive AB diblock copolymer comprised of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and 4‐vinylbenzoic acid (VBZ). The AB diblock copolymer was prepared via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization in DMF employing a trithiocarbonate‐based RAFT agent. PolyNIPAM was employed as the macroRAFT agent. The NIPAM homopolymerization was shown to possess all the characteristics of a controlled process, and the blocking with VBZ was judged, by size exclusion chromatography, to be essentially quantitative. The NIPAM‐VBZ block copolymer was subsequently demonstrated to be able to form normal and inverse micelles in the same aqueous solution by taking advantage of the stimuli responsive characteristics of both building blocks. Specifically, and as judged by NMR spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering, raising the temperature to 40 °C (above the lower critical solution temperature of the NIPAM block), while at pH 12 results in supramolecular self‐assembly to yield nanosized species that are composed of a hydrophobic NIPAM core stabilized by a hydrophilic VBZ corona. Conversely, lowering the solution pH to 2.0 at ambient temperature results in the formation of aggregates in which the VBZ block is now hydrophobic and in the core, stabilized by the hydrophilic NIPAM block. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Various functional diblock copolymers have been used as surface modifiers for rutile pigment in an effort to condition the solid for eventual use in multicomponent polymer systems. Coated surfaces were analyzed by inverse gas chromatography at infinite and finite dilution of the vapor phase, and by XPS. At high coverages (about 10% by weight of the pigment), the diblocks were randomly oriented at the air interface, effectively masking the surface of the rutile. At low diblock concentrations acid/base interactions dominated the orientation of the adsorbed molecule at the rutile interface, thereby also affecting the orientational states at the air interface. In this condition, the performance of the pigment in specified host polymer systems may be expected to vary with the selection of the diblock copolymer modifier. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We report the self‐consistent field theory (SCFT) of the morphology of lamella‐forming diblock copolymer thin films confined in two horizontal symmetrical/asymmetrical surfaces. The morphological dependences of thin films on the polymer‐surface interactions and confinement, such as film thickness and confinement spatial structure, have been systematically investigated. Mechanisms of the morphological transitions can be understood mainly through the polymer‐surface interactions and confinement entropy, in which the plat confinement surface provides a surface‐induced effect. The confinement is expressed in the form of the ratio D/L0, here D is film thickness, and L0 is the period of bulk lamellar‐structure. Much richer morphologies and multiple surface‐induced morphological transitions for the lamella‐forming diblock copolymer thin films are observed, which have not been reported before. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A diblock copolymer consisting of tetrahydropyranyl acrylate (THPA) as a pH‐deprotectable block, and a permanently hydrophobic block, methyl acrylate, was synthesized by RAFT polymerization using a quaternary amine functionalized, hydrophilic, RAFT chain transfer agent. The polymer self‐assembled in water to form vesicles with Dh = 130 nm, as determined by DLS and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. Acid catalyzed deprotection of the THPA units to yield acrylic acid resulted in a vesicle to micelle morphology transition, as evidenced by the decrease in hydrodynamic diameter to Dh = 19 nm and the observation of micelles by dry state transmission electron microscopy. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
